Growing up poor I never even thought about Amex. But I’m so glad I watched your videos for credit card tips. Now I have plat and gold and from those alone my life has had a massive upgrade in normal life.
⛲ I'm glad Amex is a lot less sensitive to recently opened accounts and hard inquiries than other lenders. It's nice to not have to really worry about that with at least one of my favorite lenders haha. Also, although I feel like I know these rules by heart, I always learn something new from these videos... so thanks Sebby!
I was declined for platinum and then 6 months after i applied again for gold and got aprroved. A week later, applied for platinum and was approved. Im thankful for amex :D
Regarding rule 1. I'm a non resident with an ITIN and I got 3 AMEX cards. They barely verified anything when I applied, just called me to confirm if I was applying, and that was it. AMEX cards are pretty good. I had a bit over a year of credit history on my ITIN with BofA. So I'm guessing that helped out.
Funny enough, that's the "stack" I think most people do (BofA secured => BofA unsecured => everything else afterwards) As much as people hate BofA, they are a pretty good entry point with their $500/$1,000 secured cards.
@Ask Sebby Yeah, I've helped a couple of people start that way, although I was lucky enough to be given an unsecured card by BofA. They started me on $700 back in 2021. I have a friend that was also given unsecured credit and he was here on a tourist visa. Then another one, for unknown reasons was only offered secured cards. The only difference there was the bank branch, so I'm guessing it was up to the person opening the accounts to decide what to offer.
There are no rules for me lol. I make over 200k a year, credit score above 830 and have very low credit utilization. I applied for the cobalt card and got approved in 6 secs lol. Can’t wait to get it. I’m in Canada.
This is a great video. You should compare the best Amex available in the English speaking markets for just knowledge. Like how do their cards, offers, bonuses and benefits stand against each other. Like for example the Amex Cobalt in Canada is awesome and I believe it is not available yet in the US. Not sure what they have in Australia, UK and New Zealand but it would be cool to see a comparison of some cards specific for some markets.
I considered it as a video but I think the general interest is low (outside of super enthusiasts). Will keep it in mind though - would be especially interesting for cards like the Platinum.
Hey Sebby, So I've got an AMEX Gold, but I'm not the primary user. I want to apply for the Gold as the primary user. What's the best way to go about this? Thanks Mario
I’ve been in pop up jail for months and I’m unsure why, even after listening to the possible reasons stated in this video. How did you navigate around it?
@@illhill what tom said below is good advice! I actually just went on an ipad that I've never used and google searched "amex platinum". The second link on the search showed me the 125k points intro offer and I was able to use that without any pop up.
How you do that? I was trying to get the Delta Reserve a few days ago before the high bonus expired but got the dumb pop up : / Wanted to apply because have some spendings coming up but I’m thinking I might just lay low and just use my current cards now
-I logged in and saw a platinum offer for $150k, but I was hesitant because of my score. Then I was pre-approved for the 90k gold card, so I jumped on that (no inquiry). Now I’m not seeing any offers for platinum anymore. And when I try a pre-approval application it says I’m not eligible for the sign up bonus. Guess I’ll wait it out.
⛲️ Got the 150k offer on the platinum because of Sebby. Thinking of adding the gold but curious if there are elevated offers beyond the standard 60k intro. Great content, Sebby!
I got a targeted offer of 90k on the Gold card. So they’re out there. But now I’m finding it hard to track down the 150k for the Plat. Best I can find is 125k, which is still really good
1) You don't have to have an ITIN / SSN in order to apply for an AMEX US card. Passport, US address, US phone number and certain US credit history (or via Global Transfer) will do the trick. 2) AMEX AU explicitly requires "Australian Citizen / Permanent Resident" as a pre-requisite for applying for an AMEX AU card. In that sense, they are much more stringent than AMEX US. 3) Amex US is probably the easiest region where you are get a card (with decent credit limit) with least "hard" requirements.
Agreed on decent credit limit part. I can't find the Australia page but NZ doesn't have the Citizen/PR: www.americanexpress.com/nz/global-card-transfer.html IIRC AU was similar when I was looking in the past. Or did you mean cards directly instead of global transfer?
I have a family member that's an illegal immigrant and is in the process to become a legal resident. I suggested him to get a Credit card to get cash back. He applied to Chase and Amex. Chase asked for more information and never approved him. Amex approved him after he called to confirm his address an ITIN number. He's been using to get cashback on groceries an gas which he loves.
Dude, I had the savor one for a while. As soon as I closed it. All my Amex cards and loan started popping up on my credit history through the capital one app.
I was in popup jail for Hilton Aspire, but not Marriott Amex Business. So Marriot got my 10k/year hotel spend. Their system allows to cobrands seems like a bad idea. Although better than chase applying 5/24 to cobrands.
I have Amex platinum for business but it is no good for me. There are many place don't accept Amex. I pay property tax for my commercial and private property about 50k a year in Denver, CO. County doesn't accept it. I use Paypal master card and get 2% cash back. The cash back straight forward not like Amex point.
⛲️ . Great video sebby. Always get good content from you. I have 8 cards with Amex now with 3 being the hybrid method you spoke of Plat, Gold and Plum. I know of ppl with more but me personally I should be good …for now 😅
Regarding Amex jail (no bonus). On 6/24/23 I applied for Amex Platinum and was approved; however, I was denied intro bonus due to once having an Amex Plat from 2001 - 2011. Closed it in 2011. My credit score at recently application was 728 and upon approval they gave me a 28% APR. My utilization at time of application was 11% but has been up to 30% in past. 1) How can I fight for intro bonus and 2) how should I plead for a decrease in APR? Thanks
Question: if you have been an AU for a platinum card would it prevent you from qualifying for the sign up bonus on a new platinum if you have never been the primary account holder for a platinum?
I was declined for the Gold card 2 months ago. At the time I only had one credit card the Capital One Platinum card. My score was 740. I called the reconsideration line, and was told my credit history doesn’t rise to the level of an American Express card holder. I’ve since added the Discover it card. The US Bank Altitude Go card. And I am an authorized user on a Citi card now. How long should I wait to apply again??? I want to apply again for the Gold card and the BCP card.
Currently in popup jail for Hilton cards (tried applying for no AF and Surpass). Does Amex want to see spend on each individual card or across all cards combined? I have the Gold and Plat, and have spent $1-3k per month over the past 7 months (since last November) across both combined (except for March when it went down to just $130), and already spent $1k this month too. However, looking at only the Gold, there was a 5 month span between November and March where I spent a total of just over $200 because I shifted majority spend to Plat for a retention offer. April, May, and June spend on the Gold alone has bounced back up to ~$500/mo. Could that be the reason, even though I spent a good amount across both, not spending on one hurt me? Or more so the one aberrant month where I didn't spend on either? Frustrating either way as Amex cards have been my daily drivers for the past 3 years and being able to pick up the Hiltons with their welcome offer FNCs throws a major wrench into my Bora Bora plans for next year.
i put all my spend on my Gold Card, Hilton Honors and BBP. I was denied of the SUB on the Surpass. Shocked as these are my only Amex cards and i put good spend across them all. Last Amex card was in December and it was my BBP. Not sure why i was ineligible.
I’m in pop up jail. Have a gold card where I put a good amount of spend. I do have an old Everyday card that I never use. I’m wondering if I close that if that would help?.?
I never had an Amex card. I have 5 credit cards from Chase Citi and capital one. Can i apply for the Amex gold and get aprroved? Have 710 score with 65k income can i get it ?
⛲I have Amex Platinum. I am adding my Mom with a gold card so she can get tsa precheck. If I cancel her authorized user card down after 3 months will that cause any problems?
Should I be closing AMEX cards I hardly use before Applying for new ones? I have a blue sky which I opened years ago and haven't used it for years but has a CC limit of $5400 and also an Amex business card that got converted as such from my Costco amex business card that has a limit of $18000 that I hard ever use.... Question is that do you think it's a good idea to cancel these cards before considering applying for news ones such as Amex business platinum and Blue Business Plus card for which I got targeted offers.
Thanks - does Amex care about cc limits such as bofa - for instance could I be technically rejected simply because I was issued too much credit already - my Amex biz with 18K - I hardly use it at all - almost negligible.
Great video Sebby I just applied for the Delta plat for the sign up bonus and that pop up you r not eligible for the bonus and you can still apply, I didn't apply and figured I would call and see why since I have never applied for this card (I do have the gold and plat) and the rep keep saying that since you r new you may want to wait but now since I watched your video I see why. I guess I will stop applying for any other cards for a while, thanks for the great content always keep it coming
⛲️ I’m not sure if the cobrand cards follow a different rule for pop up jail, but I’ve been locked out of Hilton welcome offers but was able to get delta and Amex welcome offers.
If they want to see $1000-$2000 a month in spend to avoid pop up jail, I’m probably going to end up in pop up jail, lol. I was sent an offer for the Gold card with a 90K signup bonus, but I only plan on spending around $500 a month on the card on average long term. It’s just kind of weird to me that Amex cares so much about high spend with such high annual fees. I’ll try out the Gold card for a year but if I don’t love it I’ll just stick with Chase and Citi.
⛲️ Currently in pop up jail. I applied for the Hilton Surpass card about 7 months ago, hit the spend and let it sit for a bit. The strategy was to get the FNC this year and the Platnium within the first half of 2023. Now I'll have to wait and see if this soending will help me get out.
⛲️ Great video as always. When I’m ready, I’ll at least know what to be on the lookout for. But I came out of the garden early for my first Annual Fee card and swung hard for the fences.
I got the gold card bonus twice now. I got the 60k fours ago, closed it out two years ago. Then 2 months ago I got a off of 90k for the gold card, got It and received the 90k points after 4k spend.
⛲️ I’ve had no issue being approved for Amex cards. I do wish there was more clarity on the once in a lifetime rule. There are a lot of people who say “lifetime is is only X amount of years.”
Wait I live in Houston and I was looking at the Platinum Amex Delta card Is there any point for me to get this card since all of the hubs are in Utah, ATL, MN, DFW Wouldn’t I have to fly into a hub then to my final destination?
Mostly for the intro bonus. Maybe if you fly out of Austin? (doubtful though) Otherwise I would consider the (non-Delta) Platinum for Centurion Lounge (out of IAH).
I'd probably finish Chase which you can still get them (5/24) but YMMV. United Quest, WoH, CSR/CSP, Aeroplan are all solid picks. Otherwise Venture X / CIti Premier / etc. If you're sticking with Amex, probably Bonvoy Brilliant.
I got the pop up no bonus message when trying to apply for a Hilton personal card. Meanwhile I have a Hilton business card and at the same time, got approved for a personal Platinum card. Maybe they want to see more spend on the Hilton card? Annoying.
Definitely not ideally and interesting to see how popup is segmented. My theory is that Hilton cards have generally been unprofitable given how they're structured = Hilton concerned / angry
Was on the fence for applying for Platinum. Now there is an 80,000 bonus for the Schwab, and 100,000 for the plain regular Platinum. I even saw 150,000. Go for Schwab with lower bonus? Or go for regular with higher bonus? Thoughts?
I got Amex platinum invitation for 150K welcome bonus points last week I couldn’t resist lol . Now I have to pay $695 annual fee . Those perks are useless to me but 150k for 6 months is just too attractive
Congrats on the pull :) No one to share the perks with? i.e., Player 2 or friend would like the Sak's credit for skincare, perfume, makeup, etc.? Prices are pretty consistent for those items across companies :)
@@AskSebby ya thanks for the advice. I’m trying to give those perks to my friends for free. Fortunately 150k is still worth of trying , at least for the first year. I think my spending habits are more suitable for Amex gold, which l also learned from your video!
I jsut got approved for a CIC, how much personal spend spend can I put on it, I have some businesses expenses (2K) but still need another 4K to put on it for the SUB
Usually fine afterwards unless default is with Amex. In that case, they might ask you to pay them back for their loss. Depending on amount, might make sense to either pay or just move on / stick with other issuers.
Hm, in wasn't aware of the spend requirements. I've had a SPG card turned baseline Marriott Bonvoy Amex for a few years now and reliably put a few hundred dollars on it each month. Been out of the game for a while. So because I don't spend a ton I'd be unable to get signup bonuses in any other amex? ⛲
⛲️ Got the AmEx BCE with 6 months credit history, I spend ~2k a month and im still not in popup jail (I hope I never get into pop up jail.) Im thinking of getting the BBP after I get my intro bonus for BCE. Do you know how long it takes for me to get the bonus?
⛲️ I am in pop up jail but only for Hilton cards. Which makes sense as I don’t use those cards. I just used them for the sub. But I do want to get approved for them because I need to rack up more Hilton points. So I guess I’ll have to suck it up and do some spend on them for a few months
@@AskSebby I have the no annual fee one. And then the business one. Unfortunately I don’t think spend on the business card will help. As I was in pop up jail for the personal cards. But was eligible for the SUB on the business card. So I’ll just have to bite the bullet. Maybe in between other SUBs.
Yea, I'm stuck in the 2/90 rule. In Jan I applied and got sign up bonus for the Hilton Aspire and the gold.. Tried applying for the platinum and I get the pop up about not being eligible for the bonus. Hopefully in May I'll qualify for it..
Any way to get out of pop up jail? I'm not sure what got me here. Have only had 2 Amex cards in total. It's fairly frustrating. Does anyone know if you can contact customer support to inquire?
Same here! But after sifting through some of these comments, it looks like one cause could be not having enough spend on the cards you currently have open. I have a Gold and Delta Platinum but only really spend on the Gold because the earning cats on Delta Plat just aren't good. I'm guessing this must be why, because every other data point of mine should make me fully eligible to earn it. Only have 2 Amex, Gold in 2018 and Delta Plat in 2021...
I wouldn't ever really upgrade as you don't get welcome bonuses. There are links out there for a 90K point welcome bonus on a gold, you may have to hunt for it and also use an incognito window to get it but a large influx in points from a bonus is well worth it...
⛲️ I closed an Amex card 20 years ago at the advice of an agency that helps “fix” your credit. Since then, Amex blacklisted me (for more than 7years). Maybe enough time has passed now that I should try again, but I’m concentrating on other cards, just because.
⛲️ Two weeks ago I applied for the Blue Cash everyday, and was denied. I thinking it's because my income might not be that high. The letter sent indicated that. My score at the time was about 809. Even after a call to the reconsideration line they stood by their decision but told me to try another time. Oh well.

Maybe go for the $15k FNC and that gets you out?
@@AskSebby that's what I'm hoping for!
I was told with a pop up that I don't qualify for the Schwab Platinum
What does your spend look like?
@@AskSebby low because I live overseas temporarily and Visa/MasterCard is king out here. I mainly use my Chase cards.
⛲️ Great video as always. When I’m ready, I’ll at least know what to be on the lookout for. But I came out of the garden early for my first Annual Fee card and swung hard for the fences.
do inquiries count/ like does AMEX care if you have a lot
Generally, no. They're the least sensitive.
I got the gold card bonus twice now. I got the 60k fours ago, closed it out two years ago. Then 2 months ago I got a off of 90k for the gold card, got
It and received the 90k points after 4k spend.
⛲️ have you done amex platinum vs brilliant comparison video
Will put it on the list :)
American Express: a ⛲️ of value for the savvy cardholder. And AmEx cards still carry a certain cachet.
I am a raging AMEX fanboy. I have not left home without it for a long time! ⛲
I recently got the Business Platinum but maybe the personal would have been a wiser choice for the statement credits.
At least the Business Platinum is a write-off! :)
Got approved for gold card today. 688 score at 18 yrs old
Congrats!
⛲️ Excellent video. Thank you
**Insert fountain emoji** Im watching from my laptop lol. I've had nothing but success with AMEX cards. I love the NLL offers.
Wells Fargo 2% active cash for the win!! Set it and forget it 😂 and a nice welcome bonus too
⛲️ Great video Sebby! Super informative!
Thanks for watching Jeff :D
Does 4/5/6 rule apply to amex cards only? So I can't hold more than 5 amex cards? Or total amount of cards regardless of issuer?
4/5/6 is an Amex rule. Amex doesn't care about other issuers (as of filming).
⛲️ I’ve had no issue being approved for Amex cards. I do wish there was more clarity on the once in a lifetime rule. There are a lot of people who say “lifetime is is only X amount of years.”
Is it possible to have multiple Gold personal cards? ⛲️ if so how do you go about applying for a second Gold card?
Main draw would be $25,000 add'l for U.S. supermarkets. Either apply directly or apply for a Green/Platinum and upgrade/downgrade after 12 months.
@@AskSebby thank you, keep up the great videos!
Wait I live in Houston and I was looking at the Platinum Amex Delta card
Is there any point for me to get this card since all of the hubs are in Utah, ATL, MN, DFW
Wouldn’t I have to fly into a hub then to my final destination?
Mostly for the intro bonus. Maybe if you fly out of Austin? (doubtful though)
Otherwise I would consider the (non-Delta) Platinum for Centurion Lounge (out of IAH).
@@AskSebby Dang it that card looked so nice I wanted it
I just want a metal airline credit card
Sebby, I’m currently 19 and my card setup consists of:
Amex platinum, Hilton aspire, and the chase freedom.
What card should I look into next?
I'd probably finish Chase which you can still get them (5/24) but YMMV.
United Quest, WoH, CSR/CSP, Aeroplan are all solid picks.
Otherwise Venture X / CIti Premier / etc.
If you're sticking with Amex, probably Bonvoy Brilliant.
Jeez! Amex platinum at age 19! That’s crazy man! Congratulations
⛲️Thank you once again for great information Sebby!⛲️
Will AE give a no annual fee gold card for the first yr if you're already approved. Can I negotiate with them before I activate?
I've never heard of anyone doing this, outside of MLA.
Thoughts?
Fish for 150k: www.asksebby.com/guides/cardmatch
You can do Schwab in the future; not mutually exclusive.
@@AskSebby Let's go fishing. Thanks!
Per terms, "technically" zero. In practice, no one seems to care (whether Chase, Amex, etc.)
For the most part, they have bigger concerns (:
Fabulous
Can you find out the rule on chapter 7 bankruptcy and getting a Amex hybrid card?
Usually fine afterwards unless default is with Amex. In that case, they might ask you to pay them back for their loss. Depending on amount, might make sense to either pay or just move on / stick with other issuers.
Hm, in wasn't aware of the spend requirements. I've had a SPG card turned baseline Marriott Bonvoy Amex for a few years now and reliably put a few hundred dollars on it each month. Been out of the game for a while. So because I don't spend a ton I'd be unable to get signup bonuses in any other amex? ⛲
You might be fine. You can't really tell until you apply.
I think if you put $0 spend, you would be more at risk.
⛲️
Got the AmEx BCE with 6 months credit history, I spend ~2k a month and im still not in popup jail (I hope I never get into pop up jail.) Im thinking of getting the BBP after I get my intro bonus for BCE. Do you know how long it takes for me to get the bonus?
Usually next statement after hitting the bonus.
⛲️ I am in pop up jail but only for Hilton cards. Which makes sense as I don’t use those cards. I just used them for the sub. But I do want to get approved for them because I need to rack up more Hilton points. So I guess I’ll have to suck it up and do some spend on them for a few months
If you have a Surpass - depending on your spend - that might be a good target (especially if you have estimated tax payments or other large expenses).
Maybe swap it in as your main card for a bit. Definitely not ideal though :(
⛲️ Better than the disclosure
Yea, I'm stuck in the 2/90 rule. In Jan I applied and got sign up bonus for the Hilton Aspire and the gold.. Tried applying for the platinum and I get the pop up about not being eligible for the bonus. Hopefully in May I'll qualify for it..
Sounds like popup jail :( Hopefully it doesn't show up in May.
⛲️ Really kind of curious as to how Amex plays with bankruptcies in cardholders pasts and how it affects approval rates.
Do any of these rules apply in Canada? Anyone aware?
AFAIK Canada has different rules.
⛲️ another great video
I love my Amex when I got it I was at 673 and got more balance then ppl that I know that have way better credit. I got lucky I guess
⛲️ dope video bro
Am i able to upgrade my blue preferred to gold?
Nope
@@vanceastro13 thank you
I wouldn't ever really upgrade as you don't get welcome bonuses. There are links out there for a 90K point welcome bonus on a gold, you may have to hunt for it and also use an incognito window to get it but a large influx in points from a bonus is well worth it...
BCP can only be product changed to BCE (Blue Cash Everyday)
How do I get out of pop up jail
General belief is to put spend on the cards ($1,000 to $2,000): ruclips.net/video/bagiUDw6Jvg/видео.html&ab_channel=AskSebby
⛲️ I closed an Amex card 20 years ago at the advice of an agency that helps “fix” your credit. Since then, Amex blacklisted me (for more than 7years). Maybe enough time has passed now that I should try again, but I’m concentrating on other cards, just because.
Other cards first usually makes sense / is the optimal strategy so I think you're playing it right :)
⛲️
Two weeks ago I applied for the Blue Cash everyday, and was denied. I thinking it's because my income might not be that high. The letter sent indicated that. My score at the time was about 809. Even after a call to the reconsideration line they stood by their decision but told me to try another time. Oh well.
@Shawn Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try later as you suggested.
@ Juan meowmix what was your income @ the time?
If I have a Navy Fed Amex card and apply for a Amex charge card, will I still receive a hard pull on my credit? ⛲
AFAIK, yes. Not as versed in the Navy Fed side so might be a good question for Naam: ruclips.net/user/NaamWynn
❤❤❤❤❤❤
⛲️ i have just got approved for the bonvoy business card and then i got pop up jail when i tried to apply for the personal gold card…
Probably put some spend and circle back to the Gold :)
I just need Costco to accept Amex.
⛲️ USAA also has Amex even a secured version but benefits art the greatest
⛲️ Watching this video from the AMEX pop-up jail. 🏰
⛲️ i recommend the gold card is the best card , to hold on with all the multiplayers. This card conquers the platinum..
Gold is an earner. Platinum is a subsidized perks (Centurion Lounge, hotel status, etc.) card :)
⛲️ I need you on my podcast sebby we’re in houston texas
I have more then 5 Amex credit cards.
Which ones? :)
