Just changed over from centurion (Japan) to Plat. Wasn’t worth it anymore since I am not using the card that often and the fees went through the roof. Overall I thought it was more for bragging rights than an actual benefit and with the new fees and my age I thought I don’t need the bragging anymore. Happy with the plat.
I would be curious to see if Amex introduces a card in between the Plat and Centurion. I know there was some talk precovid about maybe a $1500 AF card, if this hypothetical card was invite only and maybe offered Delta Silver, Hilton Diamond, Marriott Platinum along with credits like $300 Airline, $300 FHR, TSA, CLEAR. Sure it's a coupon book but I think there could be a market for HENRYs (high earners, not rich yet) in non target cities like the midwest with remote work taking off. 🐎
@@billwright2176 They need to offer points for dining. It makes no sense that a travel card does not have that. I am sure they know people like to dine when they travel.
🐎 I think the interesting point to remember is - do you need it? Even if you did get the tap on the shoulder for the invite and paid to get it, now what? Does the benefits actually translate to useful personal benefits. I have a mix of personal and business AMEX card spending probably just shy of the requirements but it’s mostly business operations related - I’m not spending $20k/night to stay in an international resort. Cool to know more details about it, but the Platinum and Gold card mix will suit me just fine for the foreseeable future. Interesting video!

This was the Best informational vid I seen on the AMCC since I started to watch vids on them. This video has poke on ideas I had about getting the card. I think my income and credit score and history play a big role I also always believed they want people who shop and travel and certain places. Like the silent wealth people. People who go to High to Ultra high wealth places that are not widely know and shop at Upper end Ultra luxury shops which your retailer pyramid seems to be right on the money. I do think Goyard goes in the top part. Where you live was not something I thought about but makes since. Brand ambassador also makes sense. Again wonderful vid from a person who does not own the card.
Yes, had the business Centurion for a long time...didn't think I was getting the value from it so went back to the Platinum, then was invited for the personal Centurion which I accepted and really like many of the perks.....my favorite is no lines and always a guaranteed seat in the Centurion Lounge at airports, can't tell you how many times I have been at the airport and a flight is delayed for some reason and the terminal is extremely busy with no where to sit, let alone eat and drink and be productive. This perk is a must for me and great value. Excellent video. Thanks!
@@GetToThePoint-Creditcards There are quite a few.......Saks credit, FHR benefits, Delta status, Mileage bonus, Travel points charge back, Global Entry credit, Uber Credit.....I know I am missing some but these are off the top of my head.
Just saw this video on my feed. Loved the insights. In 2018 I moved to DC area and was invited to apply for Platinum with no initiation fee and an introductory offer to offset the annual fee. I found it strange because I was relatively low net worth and had recently graduated college making about an average salary for my age. I wonder what that push for pre-approved platinum meant for dilution of the centurion requirements even further.
NYC address (but Queens). ~500k spend, ~100k on watches (Richemont mostly since the big hype began) and ~100k on typical apparel that leans luxury but also lots of more regular stuff (Proper Cloth etc.) Rest almost entirely travel including fancy restaurants, flights (I actually buy mostly main cabin domestically), and hotels (mostly Ws/equivalents with some Ritz/Regis thrown in). Most (80+%) is work driven that I expensed but AMEX probably doesn't know/care.
🐎 I’ve had it for 20 yrs. Turned it down the first time I was invited. I needed something concierge (ish) and called them one day about a month after. Had the card in hand two days later The service when you call is the reason it’s worth the spend. No holding, no bs, just amazing service. Worth it in the long haul.
The Centurion card is clearly the Birkin Bag of cards. It seems like Amex likely cares more about the total numbers of cards in circulation than anything else. So, yes, it seems likely that they adjust for inflation and probably slightly for economic downturns too.
🐎 Question, I’m new to AMEX, got a gold last year, half way spent 75k, this year is almost triple. I then got an upgrade notice for Plat. I instead decided to not upgrade but instead flat out get the Plat so I have gold and Plat. I heavily use dinning (got 100k points so far this year in dining) and travel this year increased to 70k on gold. I figured I would get more bang for my buck by going Plat and keeping Gold for restaurants and super markets. I also use the credits as well. I think this is the right move and I used your calculators which seem to be the case. Mainly curious if others are doing this method or I should just go full platinum? I’m also getting the welcome bonus on the plat here soon as well. Thanks for all your help!
I think they can definitely get more aggressive with spend requirements, similar to how Ambassador status at Marriott went from $20k to $23k requirement, and how it's harder to find table games with lower minimum bets. House rules and if they need to 're-fine' their clientele, they can definitely adjust when they seem fit 🐎🐎🐎
🏇 Man, Cesar needs to get the new card design... embossed numbers on the Black Card feels like a sin 🤣 Although this is likely not a card I'll ever get, it's still really interesting to learn more about. I'll never pass up on a video about it, but out of all that I've seen, this one is one of the most informational, so great work Sebby!
Had a call with my representative in Germany. They said we need more luxary and travel. And business cards they don’t care that much more the personal spending
🐎 Also I’m curious, how do you actually get a car dealership to accept full payment for the car on an Amex (or any card for that matter)? A few years ago I was looking at a new Mercedes C 63 coupe and asked the sales guy what the max was I could put on a card. He looked at me and said, “We can do up to $3000.” So much for reaching your minimum spend! The Service Department at Mercedes, however, has no limit.
That's because the sales guy knows that the finance guy needs him to convince you to get a loan from MBFS. If you offer to pay for the CC fees, you can probably convince them to let you put it all on the CC though.
@@AskSebby That's crazy. God forbid you dont drink champagne, Jimmie walker and eat caviar, lobster or kobe beef burgers daily. Honestly a great video- I’ve been putting less and less per annum on the Amex. I get too much value off of my other cards, and being in miami I think giving Amex this much loyalty doesn’t give me the value that I want. If they offer it to me I will take it, but I’m not chasing- just making the best decision for my points. I get much more value stacking the CSR and the Hyatt for globalist as well as the venture x for other travel partners. Still spending quite a bit with the Amex but there’s no way I use them internationally for restaurants or hotels when csr gives me 3x per dollar
I have reserve is it better to get Amex platinum or gold or reserve is fine ? What is credit line on gold and platinum cards thx excellent information!!! Do you have one on these cards or recommend something else

Sebby, what do the spending multipliers look like on the Centurion? What specific benefits of this card justify the opportunity cost of funneling spending through Amex rather than competing cards with more lucrative bonus categories? Thank you.
🐎 I don’t see me ever getting an invite, and I’m fine with that. Even if my wife and I combined our spending I doubt we would ever get one. But she prefers the CSR.
Great video. Q: If my spend is on knockoffs can I get a knockoff Amex? I drive a BNW, my watch is a Robex, and my suits are either Hugo Ross or Jojo Arnami. That should be enough to get me a Senturion Amex?
🐎 excellent vid Sebbe. I have been CSR holder for many years. I was thinking of getting the AMEX platinum. I travel for personal vacations. Do you think that’s worth it?
I have a slightly different viewpoint from reading the FT threads and other DP gathered. I don't think the annual spend for the personal Centurion is that high. Its more like $300-500k annually depending on other factors. Those other factors are type of spend (doesn't have to be luxury spend), how long you have been a card member, consistency of spend, and overall credit. Note workarounds are a Private Wealth relationship with Goldmans and probably Morgan Stanley, where your assets can offset spend requirements. Amex is walking a fine line with type of spend. Say someone spends $500K plus annually but not on luxury items, hence not extending an invite. You could alienate that card member.
Basically, you need to be a jet-setter who always sits at the front of the plane, or has the plane all to yourself, and stays in top hotels. Makes sense. You’re not going to take full advantage of the concierge and other credits if you’re just buying printers.
When I got my invite I had only had my Platinum for two years all of which was in the UK. I’ve now had my Centurion for 3 years and can say that I really don’t see as much benefit in it compared to my JPM card 🐎
This is a wonderful video about Amex. Its really a great company and a legacy brand. Oh yea they are going ot be super exclusive about who has that card going forward!!🐎🐎🐎
🐎 Hey Sebby! You should do a video on the Amex Platinum (and Centurion) Concierge requests, what are some of the outlandish requests and how much these requests cost. One I remember reading about was a customer wanted some sand from the Dead Sea for his son’s school project and the time stipulation required the Amex employee to hop on a private jet to get to the Dead Sea and fly it back to I think Europe where the customer was based.
Never been a fan of taking Amex at my store, got the platinum card and was deny entrance into the centurion LAS, because of a seat issue. Trying figure how to dump my platinum card before I have to renew at $795.
My friend has it but I have no idea what the requirements were for him to get it, he owns a massive beer and liquor distribution company so they spend a lot in general.
You know what I want? The ability to combine my Gold and Platinum Cards onto my Platinum Card. Combine the annual fees, and give me all the perks of both on the Platinum, so I don't have to carry two bloody metal cards around. The most convenient thing AmEx could do would be that. 🐴
There really needs to be a card between the platinum and the centurion. The average spend on the platinum is in the tens of thousands. There is a demographic that spends in the hundreds of thousands, but not enough for the centurion. A card in between catering to higher spenders and offering a bit more exclusivity than the platinum but less than the centurion would be a great product.
Sebby, when you travel abroad, do you find anywhere that accepts amex? Not counting hotel or rental cars. When I go to European countries I haven't found hardly any places that accept amex.
It was a mixed bag. In Japan, 50/50. Better to have a Visa w/tap to pay as a back up. In Europe, the card usually has to have a chip. Learned that the hard way trying to buy train tickets.
I spoke to amex in 2017 directly and they said that over 150-200 if you dont get it thats because you were over using the benefits. Honestly its not worth it.
🐴 Great post. Very helpful background and history. I can see that i'm spending in mostly the right places but probably not at a level that stands out, particularly in light of NYC location. To your point, it's not clear that there is a positive cost/benefit for me vs Platinum.
Interesting analysis. By the way, not everyone who has a Centurion, is graceful with money. I work for an antique store in NY. One lady purchased a little dish for $500. She bargained endlessly to pay $50 less. I couldn't quite believe it when she paid with an AmEx Centurion.
🐎Sebby, great video man! I’m super happy with our Gold Amex, but would be curious if there’s another option that’s competitive with their 4x points on domestic grocery & restaurants…do you have a video on your channel that might discuss this topic? If not, what do you think is a good competitor to the Gold Amex? Chase Saphire?
The fact that you do this depth of research is the reason why I follow this channel! Haven’t finished it yet, but can tell this’ll be a good one. Edit: Not exactly surprised about the spend amounts. Found it interesting that they’re breaking spend down by brands, along with region to see whether or not you “qualify”
For the benefits given -- I don't think the Centurion Card is worth the price. Even if I could spend that amount of money -- I'd much rather spend it on maximizing as many points and miles on welcome bonuses, accelerated offers, etc than on one black card with benefits that don't suit me. It's the wow factor that has so many people chasing it - I get it. But for me, it's not worth the chase.
What American Express should do is put up a list of global perks and allow the individual cardholder to select what they want from what's available. Not everyone lives in California, New York, London, or the like. Hence, forcing things like Equinox, Saks, Harrods, etc. will be useless to a lot of members. The ability to tailor the service to cater to the needs of the individual would go down better with a lot of people. You don't have/need Equinox, then you are not getting to take full advantage of the service. Having the ability to swap that for foreign airline status, free hotel nights, Amazon credit or whatever offsets & equalize things by allowing every single holder to maximise the benefits for their own particular need.
People that are doing the points game are certainly not being invited for this card .. the spending needs to be very high and the plat gives no points .
I saw this mystical card out in the wild just the other day. Some rich lady from Monterrey, MX was using it to buy fast food, and in my pavo mind, I was like "how dare you." I was so close to wealth and she was using hers to buy cheap and super unhealthy food. 😭
actually there might be a "sorta" workaround on getting the Centurion card. if u actually have a relationship with Goldman Sachs and have a GS Platinum and have adequate spend you might be able to tell ur GS advisor to request an invite on the Centurion card
Thanks so much for making this video! It’s a huge help in my understand what the REAL requirements are for this card. I have 4 of AMEX’s most expensive credit cards (in terms of annual fees) and I’m aiming to replace them all with the Centurion Card.
🐎Hey Sebby, would love your advice! Business owner here - I've just started making the move into the Chase umbrella. Previously, my BofA AA card was the daily personal driver, and Barclays Hawaiian Airlines Business card was the daily business driver. I've made the decision to move everything to Chase. I've had the Sapphire Preferred card for almost 5 years now, but it has sat in my night stand to act as an emergency card. So I'll start using that as my everyday personal, and then I applied for and got the Ink Unlimited for the everyday business card. My goals are related to value of redemption. I like the idea of being able to apply points/miles to more than one thing, travel being at the top of that list, compared to only either AA or HA. My question for you is, which should I get next? Ink Cash? Or Ink Preferred? I am the type of guy who would go to Staples and buy a bunch of Visa Gift cards (at 5x for the first $25k annually) and just make regular purchases with that, just to take advantage of the 5x multiplier. Any advice would be great! Cheers!
They're making a lot of money from aspirational people paying large fees for benefits they won't use. They'll never filter it as they do with the Centurion

I wish they kept the old platinum card weight. Its now cut down with a plastic finish for the tap feature. Feels cheap now
How do you get to charge an entire vehicle on a CC? Most dealers limit you to say $5k due to fees.
🏇Is the concierge service alone worth $500/month? Can you treat it like a personal assistant?
Great video. I'll never own a Centurion, but I'm happy you convinced me to get a Platty. I love my Platty.
No one will ever own a Centurion. Cards are the property of the issuing bank. And of course you don't own an account.
Never been a fan of taking Amex at my store, got the platinum card and was deny entrance into the centurion LAS, because of a seat issue. Trying figure how to dump my platinum card before I have to renew at $795.
You can downgrade your Platinum card for a different card like the Gold card or the Green card, in order to avoid the Platinum’s annual fee.
🐎 This was a really great video. Thank you for researching this for us!
Thanks for info good Sir!!! 🐎
🐎 Great summary video. Any chance they will make a card between the Platinum and the Centurion?
THANKS FOR THE INFO WHO GETS WHAT AND HOW IS JUST A MATTER OF CHANCE I SUPPOSE 😅
I spoke to amex in 2017 directly and they said that over 150-200 if you dont get it thats because you were over using the benefits. Honestly its not worth it.
Can I convert some of my spirit airfare miles from expedia to this card thoufgh?
Thumbs up and subbed bc data is awesome and big props for all the research
🐎 I got mine last summer after being a platinum member for a few months... and it's worth every cent.
Heh, I noticed that some people see shopping as a game and always strive to get a discount, regardless of how much money they have.
I would say she is very graceful with money. She got 50 bucks off!
Reminds me of the commercial, "I don't spend a fortune on anything, that's why I have a fortune.."
Does AMEX know you have vertical blinds though?
I would not want to spend $200-300K a year. I don’t even want to imagine how I would even try to do that.
Thank you
🏇Very nice breakdown and analysis! Appreciate knowing how far away I am from living in that world, something to strive for one day lol.
🐎 thanks for the breakdown Sebby
Thanks for watching :)
Do you think that the JO Morgan reserve is a better option?
I'm quoted in the FT post at 12:43!🐎
I wonder how many people have turned down an invitation.
wondering how would someone spend $100k per annum on restaurants....
Very interesting and informative video, Sebby! 🐴🐎
Thanks :)
Great video! Learned a lot
I like the extensive research you did on the data points. 🐴🐎
I mean this card with Minsheng bank in China is like save 1M USD cash with them, they will give it to your for 1 year free.
the delta Platinum status alone makes the 5k annual fee worth it
I love Amex. I have two cards with them. Might get a third in the near future. Looking to get the gold.
Great vlog on this interesting topic 🐎
It’s not surprising, but good to know 🐎 mmm I feel like because of inflation, they’ll possibly get stricter on invites & add spending requirements.
GOOD INFO! Which private banks offer the Centurion Card with a Deposit??
Sebbbbbbby does it again 🎉
People that are doing the points game are certainly not being invited for this card .. the spending needs to be very high and the plat gives no points .
I saw this mystical card out in the wild just the other day. Some rich lady from Monterrey, MX was using it to buy fast food, and in my pavo mind, I was like "how dare you." I was so close to wealth and she was using hers to buy cheap and super unhealthy food. 😭
actually there might be a "sorta" workaround on getting the Centurion card. if u actually have a relationship with Goldman Sachs and have a GS Platinum and have adequate spend you might be able to tell ur GS advisor to request an invite on the Centurion card
watching this as a centurion member myself, they are for sure not looking for the amount of spend but the type of spend.
Cheers!
Love this video Sebby! 🐎
Thanks :)
YES Amex needs to filter the Platinum too same way it did with the Centurion black. Exclusivity itself is a product!
They're making a lot of money from aspirational people paying large fees for benefits they won't use. They'll never filter it as they do with the Centurion
