Nice review. It's hard for a reviewer to know everything, but he did miss a few things: 1) The higher trim levels, starting with the ST-Line Select I believe, do have LED Fog Lights. 2) The 2023 Escape comes standard with an 8 inch infotainment screen and physical buttons/knobs for the HVAC controls. For those of us who prefer smaller screens, physical buttons/knobs, and lower cost, simply don't get the $3,000+ Technology Package which adds a lot of electronic features that many of us don't want, such as a larger 13.2 inch infotainment screen, which replaces the physical HVAC buttons/knobs with onscreen controls. 3) The rear seats CAN be moved forwards and backwards, just like the front seats. Other videos have shown this feature, which isn't common. 4) The 2.0L engine is upgraded for 2023 with a new Modular Power Cylinder (MPC) design. Port injection was added to the existing Direct injection to keep the valves cleaner and significantly reduce carbon buildup. The engine tuning with the 8-speed AT was improved for quieter operation and smoother shifts. Overall, if optioned properly, the Escape can please many buyers.
@@wayneheien9246 I don't think it was them being quiet. They made it clear on the new Mustang 2.3 having both port and DI. I have a 2.0 and 8 speed and the engine is pretty smooth and the 8 speed shifting is fine. I don't short trip much and I run Lucas and AMSOIL upper cylinder lube that I'm hoping will help keep the intake valve clean.
I have this exact same model and I can personally say, for a low end vehicle, you get a very good bang for your dollars. The seats are very comfortable. The full-size rim and tires gives it a better ride and handling. Tires also give it a far better appearance. The drive assist just about drives the car by itself. The screen is large enough to make it easy to work with while driving but does take time to learn how to maneuver through it. The daily in and out of traffic is very good. You have enough power to pull out into traffic without having to floor it. Road noise is very minimal and engine noise at highway speeds is very minimal. The adaptive cruise control is spot on. It will even come to a full stop with it on. Opening and closing the doors sound and feels like between a high luxury vehicle and the cheapest vehicle. In my opinion I would say very pleasant and solid. The stereo system sounds very clear and crisp. The inside appearance is very up to date looking and appealing to the eyes. Things I think would be nice to have had or improved on would be. Needs a option to disable the auto start/stop permanently. Needs auto start on the key fob. Needs seat memory controls. Passenger seat needs the same option as the driver seat. Heated and cool seats would have been a huge plus. Better stereo sound would have been really nice. Something with a 8" sub and quality speakers would have been spot on. With everything I said, I would say it's a really nice vehicle and I don't have any problems with heavy traffic in the city or long hour trips.
Can someone explain to me why industry is moving towards 3cyl? I’ve had state officials drive base Escapes/Hybrids and they’ve all had problems with the engine/transmission. Thanks!
The government is pushing for better fuel economy on the car makers, forcing them to basically go to 3 cylinder engines. Before it's all over most vehicles will all have 3 cylinder engines. The thing that gets me is these 3 cylinder engines really aren't getting that much better fuel economy than a 4 cylinder and you are sacrificing so much horespower. When will the government realize that the majority of buyers would much rather have a bigger engine and more horsepower rather than better fuel economy.
Those extended roof spoilers do indeed have a function. The wind comes off the back of the vehicle in a "blow back" circle. It can make the rear window very dirty. The spoiler extends the length of the roof moving that wind current further back and thus missing the back window.
I test drive one today, to replace my 2014 Esacpe. I love the styling on this- it is so much sleeker and more sophisticated than any of the previous versions.
I had a 2016 Focus ST. The 2.0 escape is pretty much the same engine. The AWD and 8-speed makes the Escape quite a bit faster as well. It's way faster than all it's direct competitors. Ford made fat hot hatch and no one noticed. Like the Focus ST if you run premium and summer tires it's dramatically improved.
That's the way I look at it and have one. Basically a lifted Focus ST with an 8 speed and AWD. Traction when the boost kicks in even in 5th gear is noticeable.
Car and Driver got a 5.7 sec 0-60 mph with the Escape 2.0 AWD. The Maverick 2.0 ecoboost AWD will do 0-60 in 6.4 secs or 5.9 secs with 4k tow package. 126 mph top speed limiter on the Escape and 110 mph limiter on the Maverick.
Yeah. Toyota has essentially mastered their craft of hybrid cars, and at a low price too being only a couple grand more than their regular ICE engines. It's just more practical over Ford's approach imo.
I'm a Ford man but i don't think i'd choose this over a Rav4. And the only thing ST means to me on this model is more money. Rav4 has a 203 horse power 2.5 at a great price in my eyes and the interior lay out is outstanding. I'm in the market for a new SUV here in the next few months and i will be purchasing or ordering a new Rav4. I still love my Fords Joe! I have two Mustangs i adore but i have a 2005 Rav4 that has been a true gem for me.
You go to that Toyota dealer, and you will soon find out that the 'great price' is NOWHERE NEAR what the dealership will be asking. The RAV4 is more cramped in the interior, especially in the rear seat, though it has more cargo room. BUT--you can slide the rear seats in the Escape fore/aft, and match that cargo area size of the RAV4, if you need to. I don't think the RAV4 layout is anything to write home about, but it doesn't have as many recalls as the Escape has had in the past, so that's the only thing I can feel it has going for it.
Jut got a brand new 2023 escape ST Line same exact specs as the one in this video. Got it 5,000 dollars under MSRP and 1.9 percent interest. Coming from a 2016 escape se. This has everything I ever wanted/needed in an SUV. Great price for the money. However, I wouldn't of paid MSRP for it as there are other vehicles that seem to be built a little better for the price. All in all it has been about 3 weeks and I love it.
I really enjoyed this video. I had a 2020 Escape and am driving a 2022. I am ready to lease a 2023 and this video was incredibly helpful with me making a decision.
Believe me or not the last two models that I liked of Ford Escape were the 2011 and a 2018. After those years I feel like Ford has neglected the Escape and if you compare it with other SUVs, it is kind of overpriced. Nice video. Thank you. 👍

I've had an Escape ST Line since July. Mine is Atlas Blue. So far, I'm really liking it inside and out. Looks sporty, feels sporty and comfy at the same time. Love the interior with the red stitching. Had that on a 2019 F-150 and it looked so good. Agree about the climate controls on the screen. Needs to be simplified, plus it wouldn't hurt if you could have manual and electronic controls for it. At 76 yrs of age, I find it a bit more hard to look at what I'm doing while watching the road. Slower reflexes, I guess. Also wish it came with the fog lamps. And that chrome strip across the top of the grille, on higher level Escapes that is a light strip. This is the 4th Escape I've had and the previous three had the 2.0 inline 4 cyl and 250hp and loads of power. But, I was quite surprised at how much power the 1.5 has. Don't mind it at all and it has a nice little rumble under the hood on acceleration. So far, I'm quite satisfied with my '23 Escape. Wouldn't mind another after this one, but I've heard rumblings that Ford is dropping the Escape after the '24 model, along with the Edge. At least the gas engine ones in favor of all electric ones. I hope not. P.S., and I'm averaging 26.1mpg with mine and that's primarily city driving.
In my opinion the last Escape looked a bit better and was less screen dependent, which is good. Even though the RAV4 is getting old now, that reliability is amazing and it will hold it's value quite a bit better than this...
@@zackcorza No, you are blinded by the Toyota badge. There is a fuel system issue and I'll have to look up the others cause I don't remember off top of my head.
Car reviewers keep saying there's only 3 trims of the new Escape. Active, ST-Line, Platinum. But they somehow are missing that there's 3 trims of the ST-Line. The regular ST-Line Elite is significantly more equipped than say just the standard ST-Line or even the ST-Line Select. The regular ST-Line is basically the Active trim with the gray wheels and the red-stitched seats (assuming you don't factor in the options). Once you add those options or step up to the Select or Elite, or Platinum, is when those higher trims really start to take shape.
This my first ON THROTTLE turned into "on throttle" (lowercase)😊 but hey, there are segments of the market who require these vehicles especially for the cost & fuel economy which we can appreciate. Thanks for covering it all on Raiti's Rides 😊👍
Can it tow a small trailer? (1500 lbs?) I'm looking for a very fuel efficient commuter car for the most part, but I do have a little 5x10 trailer and I like to take my 4-wheeler to the off-road park on occasion.
Nice review. A suggestion if I can, that I don’t see most reviewers mention. Yes this one didn’t have a sunroof or power passenger seat, but Ford, Nissan and many others have packages you can add (and a lot of times they are sold on the lot as such) where you can get those amenities or upgrades, without having to go up to the next trim level.
I feel like it's been awhile but seeing the escape again and looking at how far it has come is kinda cool but I don't know about the front design though.
I bought a 2011 escape brand new and only had trouble with it twice , which was a battery that needed to be replaced, i still have it with tons of miles on it and that thing still runs really nice without hardly any issues. Take that Toyota, im in the market for a new suv and defiantly looking at another escape why im watching this video
looks good, but the 3 cyl force fed engine ? my sister inlaws Ford with the turbo had a headgasket failure at 22 thousand miles ,Ford replaced the engine engine under warranty
I would have never thought a car company would put an inline-3 into a compact crossover, but I can see the reasoning behind Ford's choice. Curious to see how this will affect the evolution of engines in the future.
well the Engine has won a heap of awards…I’m a little apprehensive about the reliability along with a Turbocharger..it does not give me enough confidence to purchase one, I would just go with the 2.0T
Hey Joe, some new developments I discovered. Apparently Ford engineers were caught testing a camouflaged sedan in Michigan. Do you think with the declining truck sales will Ford consider re-entering the sedan market, possibly coming out with a Fusion replacement? Do you have any insight to this 🤔
Great review Joe. I think the problem with this car is it doesn’t even know what it is. Is it a Ford Focus successor? Yeah, kinda. Is it also a RAV4 competitor? We’ll, yes -even though is smaller-. It tries to be too many things and not good at any of them. To exacerbate it, the built quality is subpar.
Ford says about 40% of 2023 sales are Selects. And I believe the 1.5 L fwd gets 27 city and 33 highway and 30mpg combined. My 2020 Escape Hybrid is averaging 47.6mpg over its life so far. Probably why it's hard to find a hybrid on the lot.
Love my Ford Escape. Suspension Horsepower Torque 4WD never gets old. I have the 2.0T 2017. 6 speed will always beat the competition once 3rd gear hits. I'm telling you I can roast many cars with the Escape
I had the start stop system on a BMW I rented in 2016 (free upgrade) and it failed 3-4 times at intersections in a couple of days. I’ve had a 2022 Genesis GV70 for 2 years as of September and it hasn’t failed once. I know your audience usually hates change but I like start/stop.
I think the refresh is definitely much more appealing. The pre face lift was a bit too bubbly and feminine. I just think this will have more appeal all around if you consider how buyers are. But its a Ford. Its name alone makes people play it safe and go to Honda or Toyota. The RAV4 sold over a million units across the globe last year. You gotta offer a lot to compete with that.
Raiti, thank you again for the review. I just wrecked my 2012 escape(I was hit) and I've been looking for another small SUV. This new model makes the 3rd generation look even uglier than before. LOL!!! This is sharp looking. If they have a hybrid version of the ST, I'm in.
Well, if Ford is putting the quality back into its product line, the Escape should be a breadwinner for the Dearborn automaker. The first car in my custody was a 1978 6 cylinder Fairmont Futura as a high school junior in 1981. My favorite vehicle I had was a 97 Ranger 2.3 5 speed, which I wish I kept. My partial zonk might be the 3 cylinder. I'm just not sure. I like the color, which reminds me of Milton's red Swingline stapler. I think I'll name this one "Tripod". Now, I'm going to queue up everyone's favorite romantic tune "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)", and chill.
For all you Rav4 lovers, my father in law has a Rav4 hybrid, the CVT is noisy and not smooth at all when driving and it feels very heavy Its almost like I feel a grinding noise under the floor boards. I prefer driving my gas powered Equinox.
neither does it "melt my frontal lobe" with excitement ... hey I'm all for three-cylinder engines ... the ones I enjoyed were two-stroke triples in 500/750cc MCs made by Kawasaki back in the the day ... those had more excitement than most kids could handle ... oops got off track ... Thanks Joe ... the 3 cylinder is a little odd[sic]
Got to give this video a zonk for the lack of research you didn't do before reviewing it. Everything you complained about, could have been rectified by getting the other two trims of the escape st line. You reviewed the base model, there is two other trims. Select and elite I believe. Zonk to you my friend. Lol
@@Det_MCDC But Ford already has a Fourth generation ST that has a new revised 2.3L engine. It makes no sense to still use the Ecoboost variant assuming that's the original from 2017 and not the S650 variant. NVM, I looked into this further and not much has changed other than the codenames.

Owned a Focus ST. One of the best hot hatches ever made imo, liftoff oversteer, decent interior, features, great cargo room. The Fiesta ST is considered a modern classic. That was only a few years ago. And now, we get this MONSTROSITY. 🤮
Yes, Europe has been using those 3cyl engines for a while, but that is not the American market nor distances. Same reason for not getting many of the different models they make there. Can't compare Europe market or needs with US.
Why do new auto makers have the info screen sticking up like that? It looks stupid, and should be inside the dash somehow. Also that electronic gear shift sucks!
I have a 2014 Escape with the 1.6L Ecoboost and I think there are times when this engine shines, but accelerating from a stop and on first start up in extremely cold winters are not it. Feels underpowered. Drives great though and is totally competent when driving in the Rockies. I would not go for a 1.5L 3 cylinder.
Why don't you ever answer your own question? I can't stand that when someone makes a video "is it better than ____" and then never gives their opinion to answer that question
I’ve had 2 escapes that I bought new and drove until they weren’t worth repairing (transmission or engine failure) That was 8yrs and 109K miles on the first one and 9yrs 121K miles on the second. They are NOT built to last.
Funny story: My wife said her friend picking up my daughter from kindergarten on her "Ford Escape" and we planned to meet in a parking lot. I'm looking on the parking lot where the hell was the car. Turns out it was HONDA HRV XD
This appears to be a base or near-base model ST-line. The "Select" (next step above base) comes with colored mirrors. 2.0 Turbo, and fog lights. The ST-Line "Elite" also has those features.
Sorry but this offering is a joke for the price. Not sure how this could touch a Rav4 or Mazda Cx-5/50. Ford seems to be skimping on every thing that is not a Mustang or a truck.

Thanks for sharing that ownership experience!
Is it reliable though? Don't know if Fords have ever been worth the purchase, outside of their pickup truck line and the mustang.
Proper maintenance they will last, but can’t make any promises about their transmissions 😂😭
A friend of mine has a 2017 with 90,000 miles and has had no problems.
Laughing out loud at the 'escape room' joke 😁
looks good, but the 3 cyl force fed engine ? my sister inlaws Ford with the turbo had a headgasket failure at 22 thousand miles ,Ford replaced the engine engine under warranty
Cx-5 PF trim or Escape ST line?
Joe correct me if i’m wrong but i think the st-line has a 13.2 inch infotainment system
they should make a full ST model with the 375hp focus rs moltor.
I would have never thought a car company would put an inline-3 into a compact crossover, but I can see the reasoning behind Ford's choice. Curious to see how this will affect the evolution of engines in the future.
Welcome to Bidens America……..
Hopefully it won't shake itself apart.
well the Engine has won a heap of awards…I’m a little apprehensive about the reliability along with a Turbocharger..it does not give me enough confidence to purchase one, I would just go with the 2.0T
Hey Joe, some new developments I discovered. Apparently Ford engineers were caught testing a camouflaged sedan in Michigan. Do you think with the declining truck sales will Ford consider re-entering the sedan market, possibly coming out with a Fusion replacement? Do you have any insight to this 🤔
Yeah the taurus is coming back. It's already available in some countries
@Chris-db5gy Including the US market at any point Chris? I think they were making some version of the Evos which is in China.
It makes sense for a Fusion comeback. Overseas the Mondeo is being produced which is the Euro version of the Fusion
a falcon version for the States.
@99-Zulu Yep I almost forgot about the Mondeo
Joe, played no games with that front fake vent!😂
Great review Joe. I think the problem with this car is it doesn’t even know what it is. Is it a Ford Focus successor? Yeah, kinda. Is it also a RAV4 competitor? We’ll, yes -even though is smaller-.
It tries to be too many things and not good at any of them. To exacerbate it, the built quality is subpar.
The 2023 Escape is on my list of vehicles to drive before I buy
So the Ford Escape name has bounced from a mini SUV to a crossover to a renamed Escort/Focus. Anyone else confused ?
I bought the Honda hybrid touring sport. Miss the Accord 6 speed but like the safety tech, quiet ride and mpg.
Great review Joe. The car is interesting but the price…crazy.
Love my Ford Escape. Suspension Horsepower Torque 4WD never gets old. I have the 2.0T 2017. 6 speed will always beat the competition once 3rd gear hits. I'm telling you I can roast many cars with the Escape
Thanks for sharing that great ownership experience input.
MSRP 32k? every time I go to a lot the base model be 33K
That is fascinating. What engine are you putting in it!
I have this engine in my Ford Focus here in the U.K. and it’s great…..
That is so wonderful to hear
Bought a 2022 Escape with the same 3 cyl engine and i can definitely say after 35k miles the car does not hold up. Will not be getting another Ford.
What happened?
No specifics I'm not listening.
I LOVE MY 2024 ST Elite!!!
4:40 i love it😅
I think the refresh is definitely much more appealing.
Love the color and I will try this SUV one day.
Milton would approve. And Lumbergh couldn't swipe it.
The interior looks way better than the homely exterior.
It make noise cuz it CVT hybrid. The gas model don't do that.
The gas powered version is very noisy
neither does it "melt my frontal lobe" with excitement ... hey I'm all for three-cylinder engines ... the ones I enjoyed were two-stroke triples in 500/750cc MCs made by Kawasaki back in the the day ... those had more excitement than most kids could handle ... oops got off track ... Thanks Joe ... the 3 cylinder is a little odd[sic]
3 banger!!! I would only drive it if it was free.
Got to give this video a zonk for the lack of research you didn't do before reviewing it. Everything you complained about, could have been rectified by getting the other two trims of the escape st line. You reviewed the base model, there is two other trims. Select and elite I believe. Zonk to you my friend. Lol
I know you could! I am comparing it on it's own for the price.
It probably wouldn’t fit and it’s not cost effective for Ford, but a true ST with the 2.7L V6 would be fun, or the 2.0L putting out 300HP+.
It should since this is bigger than the focus.
Would be the 2.3L if they did it
@@Det_MCDC Yeah the new 2.3 from the Fourth Gen Focus. Not the 2.3 from the Third Gen RS.
@@xoulmannn yeah it would likely be the 2.3 from the mustang as it's part of the new MPC engine family as are the 1.5 and 2.0 in the 2023 escape.
It’s a 13’2 Inch Screen Great Job FORD 13’2 is Beating a lot of SUVs almost Double the Price along with all 12’3 All digital Dash Love the fully loaded LED Everywhere not Just Lights Blinkers Brake light LED reverse backup light LED beating out the 2023 Explore and Audi and others incandescent is a thing of the past
I mean yeah it’s basically a motorbike with a suv chassis but I have personally towed a trailer through the blue ridge mountains with one of these and averaged 28mpg!!
I always thought ST stood for still tryin'. Nice job on the review though.
the messed up this gen until this refresh.. i’m not sure why any car review didn’t mention how ugly it was until now..
This has Hertz and Enterprise all over it… you pay 32k and next week it has depreciated to 25k
They all depreciate buddy. What is your point? Buy a loaner if you are concerned about depreciation.
You can definitely tell the designers dipped into the good old ford parts bin. Looks good
He said bust cream. Heheh
Is it me or do those 18's look really small on that.
My choice, how about above ST???
I would go with the atlas blue with black wheels and black accents.
Love how they canned the Fiesta and Focus ST. At least we have this ;__;
Owned a Focus ST. One of the best hot hatches ever made imo, liftoff oversteer, decent interior, features, great cargo room. The Fiesta ST is considered a modern classic. That was only a few years ago.
And now, we get this MONSTROSITY. 🤮
And labeled ST with a 3cyl engine. C’Mon Ford!
I would like you to review lexus LM,please
Looks nice .
Is this a good car for college kids ?
Wow was thinking they would last longer than that. Was looking at new cars none are near as good as old ones . Honda sure went downhill sad.
Funny I like it more than the dodge hornet 😀...I would get the 2.0 turbo tho...lol...ford escape looks good...
I can't believe Noone has commented on the "Mark the gooch" shoutout at the end of video 😂
Funny story: My wife said her friend picking up my daughter from kindergarten on her "Ford Escape" and we planned to meet in a parking lot. I'm looking on the parking lot where the hell was the car.
Turns out it was HONDA HRV XD
I was actually born in the back seat of a 47 Plymouth. I guess I couldn't wait to get out. Just the opposite now. 😂😅
In europe there is less plastic i think like the mirror caps and on the rear bumper
Also a led bar where the chrome strip is in the front.
And we do have foglights where those ugly plastics are
This appears to be a base or near-base model ST-line.
The "Select" (next step above base) comes with colored mirrors. 2.0 Turbo, and fog lights.
The ST-Line "Elite" also has those features.
I think the edge has more to offer
Edge is gone in 2025.
Sorry but this offering is a joke for the price. Not sure how this could touch a Rav4 or Mazda Cx-5/50. Ford seems to be skimping on every thing that is not a Mustang or a truck.
Bruh thats a huge European Fiesta ST it also has a 3 cylinder 1.5 engine
