    You're right. I really don't like eating sand. Thanks for watching. It's always fun getting comments.

    This was really excellent information. I went clamming for the first time this season yesterday here on Cape Cod, and came here looking for the answer to whether iodized salt was okay. As you used a salt shaker, I'm guessing yes! One tip you might like to try; I use my salad spinner and basket for rinsing the clams. It makes things easier as I can lift the basket up out of the sand, dump the water, rinse the outer bowl and repeat. The spinner is also great for storing the clams overnight in the fridge with a wet paper towel on top because the basket lets them get more oxygen. Thanks for a great how to.

    I scrub them with a brush. Then soak in salted water for ten minutes. Then eat or refrigerate.

    If you put a mesh strainer (little smaller than
    than the bowl) it works great to just lift them
    out of the bowl...then carry on...

    In our place we wash it thoroughly and then we boil it with water adding salt and turmeric.
    It opens while boiling and then we strain it and cook

    I always read that having them in tap water for too long would kill them. Every time we have made clams after a thorough cleaning they had sand in them. I have never used the salt trick or did it 3 times. Thanks for this video

    Great video, I personally do not mind going through the trouble especially when friends say they enjoyed the meal and were surprised that they were not filled with sand. thanks again for the video

      Be careful with freshwater clams. Most are endangered species. Most edible clams are ocean clams

    TRY BLACK PEPPER! !!!! It WORKS! Its best to Prepare a day ahead. Rinse it well. Fill the bowl with water and pour black pepper into the water. The clams will spit out all the sand.

      @katttham 8 лет назад +1

      +godfammusic i rinse the clams first. 3 times then soak it in water with black pepper for at least 1 -2 hrs. well that's how long I leave it in for. I like my clams sand free. the clams cleans itself out. try it out. :)

    John Davino of the old Grotta Azzurra on Mulberry Street in Manhattan employed a guy to do nothing all day but clean clams. They took their seafood god damn seriously. On the flip side, several years ago my mom had to send back a plate of steamers at Rooney's Crab House in Long Branch because they were covered with sand. I mean utterly covered; I tried one. Could be the freshest seafood in the world but it's inedible if you don't clean it.

    You need to soak them in salt water to the ocean level to get the clams to filter themself. Tape water will kill them.

    please invest in a clam knife!! your asking for a tripto the ER for stiches using a regular knife like that. Better yet put clamsinto the freezer for 20 minutes they are very easy to shuck after that

    no salt or cornmeal?

    • @tonyventimiglia6776
      @tonyventimiglia6776 Год назад

      no, they're from salt water so I don't think it's neccesary. And I never heard of using cornmeal. When we cook snails, we feed them corn meal for a day before they get boiled. It cleans out their insides. Is that what the cornmeal does to the clams?

  • @KidIndigo1
    @KidIndigo1 10 лет назад +1

    Wow. Seems to me a bit over the top. I scrub 'em, then let them breathe/filter for 20 minutes in a seawater level brine (tap water plus salt), and then I cook 'em. 1 tsp of salt in water sufficient to submerge the clams seems to be OK, at least for me. Yummy.

    Where is this guy from Oklahoma? Washie, rinsie put on the rubber gloves let them purge. Open the shell, loosen the meat squeeze on some lemon juice watch if they squirm (then their alive, shoot it into your mouth, chew and swallow. That, Chef Needlenose is how it's done where eating clams was invented..

    Why would you let them sit for 20 minutes in water for? They are steamers that have the tongues that come out. All they are is baby quahogs! You don't have to let them sit in water. You don't even have to rinse them. You can just shuck them like that! I would have has them shucked and ready to eat in 15 minutes!

    Keeping the clams in fresh water for any length of time will kill them. You are way, way over cleaning them. Perhaps you might want to try an autoclave?
    I’m pretty sure you haven’t got a clue how to actually handle, clean and prepare clams!
