      Call me cynical but I don't think it's a weird choice. I think it's a very intentional choice.
      They throw in the coins to make the base package seem deluxe but then charge a premium for the actual useful upgrade. Subtle salesmanship at its finest.

      Actually I'm glad they did for one big reason. The monastery tiles that come with the base have the description on the back. The acrylics do NOT. That alone was a deal-breaker for me with the acrylics, since I very frequently am teaching games to new players, and it is *exhausting* constantly having to go over what those yellow tiles do.

  • @MaryJoSminkey
    @MaryJoSminkey 2 месяца назад +1

    Was fun coming across this after having already backed the 2nd printing, but ALSO just getting to play with a friend's copy of the Special Edition.
    1. Point Salad - I'm baffled a bit at this being a negative, as it just has never seemed to be for people I play with. Most love that you are constantly moving around the board and some players don't even care by how much, they just have their own goals and are happy wherever they land.
    2. AP - true, it can be particularly for newer board games. But it drops off fairly quickly with a few game plays and isn't any worse that a lot of other top board games.
    3. My friend had the acrylic tiles and I was *really* glad I didn't decide to get them for one big reason - they don't have the hints on the back of the tiles about what they do! After repeating for about the 20th time what some yellow tile on a player's board does, I was 100% satisfied with my choice and knowing that my copy is going to have the hints. Yes, I know there are player aids, it still takes FOREVER to find a specific yellow tile on those particularly if you are new.
    4. Yes, I do play on BGA all the time. But like a lot of people, many of my friends will not ever play a game online, and they are even less likely to do so if it's not something they can play quickly in real time. And when I love a game like this one, I love introducing it to new players. And let's face it, that cheap original game is simply not as inviting as this version. The larger, easier to read tiles alone make this worth it to me.
    5. They did indeed fix the number not being in a circle. I do somewhat agree with the castle minis not being particularly useful, but having played with them, they don't really block my view of the board enough to bother me, and with the game name including "Castles" it feels pretty thematic to me. They are now offering a terrain upgrade that includes all the other buildings which I think is just totally bonkers and would definitely make the game much harder to play, let alone the annoyance of constantly having to swap your tiles for the terrain ones as you place them.

      This format is mostly about people who REALLY NEED A REASON TO NOT BACK. So some points are very nitpicky, like the game mechanic things. So some points aren't that serious, others are though.

    I was one of the ppl pushing for a no minis version and I'm extremely disappointed that it doesn't come with a smaller box and shopping cost. That and the fact that for 90 euros plus shipping in getting cardboard tiles and would have to pay 33 euros extra for acrylic tiles made this tier completely ridiculous.
    Not very happy, but what can you do

  • @ScytheNoire
    @ScytheNoire 2 года назад +10

    WTF? He talked to me specifically?! :) Ya, I'm keeping my pledge.
    You are completely right about a few of these. Not only did they mess up the board numbers not being in a circle, but the game mat graphic just shows all 6s. Very sloppy.
    In BoardGameCo's interview with AR, they said their first priority is graphics and being eye catching, and then AFTER THAT they worry about gameplay and rules. That is probably the companies biggest problem, putting eye candy over the main purpose of games: gameplay.

    I'm so glad i found this video, last night with 8 hours to go before campaign ended. I really liked all your points. They were very valid with reflection of benefit breakdown and why one would appreciate or not aspects of this deluxe version. In the end I got the top edition with all the minis and everything, but your video helped me get there by analyzing why one would or would not want a set like this when a players set is cheaper and maybe more efficient for play. So this was perfect video for me to stop before committing and asking what my expectations and options are, and pledge knowing I wanted a pretty center piece game to play with family and friend. So video did it's job getting me to make a pledge decision with a good amount of reflection on what I wanted, and what was available. So thanks!!!!!

  • @Terabiel
    @Terabiel 2 года назад +3

    I'm backing it because a) I want all the expansions in one collective look alike box... but also because of the larger boards and pieces as well as the recessed played boards. That's pretty much it. I have just the base game in its original format and one of the promo expansions right now.
    I don't like playing boardgames online particularly, so point 2.5 isn't really important.
    I don't have any fomo for this. I just think it would be nice to have. I don't have a problem with point salad games. I have plenty of other games where points are hard to come by with deep weighty crunchy thinking. I also don't worry about AP. For me, the longest I ever really spend on a turn is about 2 minutes, and most of the time my turns are less than 1 minute long. And if it takes my friends a bit longer to think of what to do, I can remind them "It's a point salad. There's probably no wrong answer. This isn't chess."
    As for the acryllic? That's a biiig upgrade. Yes, it's nice to get the tiles in acryllic, but that massively bumps weight and production. It should be optional. So should the coins.

I know it is a very unnecessary luxury purchase, but sometimes that’s okay. (if you have the budget for it) I’m still undecided. Gonna finish watching this video and see how strong your powers of persuasion are.
    Well, the biggest reason for me is still the price considering I already own the anniversary edition. I know I could buy 2-3 other games with that money and have totally unique experiences versus 1 really deluxe one that I already have.

    5 - Point salad is a reason to get it...i love the balancing act of where to give and get points. (and Point Salad is a very fun filler)
    4 - AP...not a factor. This just means the game takes some thought and is a plus.
    3 - Acrylic. Personally, i am fine with the cardboard, so happy i dont have to buy them. The metal coin point is valid, though unlike acrylic, i do like the metal coins, and i typically dont get them due to cost. I have poker chips for money in games if needed.
    2 - 2019 version. Yes, cheaper. Its a viable option. I have the original with most expansions, but considering getting the new version (classic) since this is a top 5 game for both my wife and I.
    2.5 - Online...bleh. I like the art for the first version over the second version.
    1 - Over-produced Most likely. and yes, the 4 and 6 need to be swapped on the main board. I cannot imagine this wont be changed in the future. For all I know is the 4 and 6 (or the 1 and 3) were swapped accidentally in the art production. yep...no need for minis, but having larger tiles (old eyes) and the vineyards expansion (hope to see rules soon) are very much a draw for me.
    BONUS : who knows. just evaluate the cost / benefit analysis and make a decision.
    There are 18 days or so to go, with 9 more reveals, so i have lots of time to make a final description.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 года назад

      Yeah I'm very interested in the reveals and the rules to Vineyards. I expect the remainder will be upgraded first player token, an unnecessary ship mini add-on, maybe find a way to upgrade some of the other tokens. I'm having a hard time guessing what they will be, since I assume you can't improve the thickness of tiles because you want people to go for that acrylic option.

    The acrylic tiles makes sense because the acrylic tiles have downsides. They are printing what the yellow tiles do on the back but they won’t do that on acrylic tiles. Also coins are hard to get in the game so metal coins aren’t abundant so it’s easy to include that whereas acrylic tiles is a tonnnn of tiles.
    Also tbey did fox that board in terms of numbering etc.

I really like castles and definitely like what I've seen from the campaign so far (a no mini pledge is awesome!), it still doesn't make sense to back if the game won't see much play.
    I also agree about the tiles, I'd rather have those than the coins which is probably why they did it.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 года назад +3

      I think that's exactly why they did it (and likely because the tiles do cost a bit more than the coins included, and they wanted to keep the cost below 100euros when people looked at it iniitially). But when companies do that it puts me off. I dislike the upsell. Board gamers are very good at upselling themselves haha.

    I wanted to buy Castles of Burgundy for a long time and when I saw the campaign, I immediatly followed. But once it launched, I lost my interest. Sure the game is great, but more than double the price is too much. Sure making different artworks and let people decide which shall be used, costs money. Sure the 3D castles have to be designed. Sure there was a new desine and a double layer board. Sure there is a new expansion. Sure there are metal coins. But I am not interested in most of the stuff. For me the old artwork was not perfekt, but seemed fine. Double layer boards can be useful, but not for this game. The only thing I think is cool, are the bags and the acrylics (which cost as much as a used copy of the game)...
    It is a great game and I am sure people will enjoy it. But this version is simply not for me. Maybe there will be a normal prices retail version without the metal coins

    The big difference between the minis/coins and acrylic tiles is that all the former look identical. It's a single mold for the minis and design for the coins, whereas it's 100 or so unique acrylic tiles - both with different printing and different colour acrylic. Flip side is they could have dropped the cardboard tiles from the box then.

    • @RvLeshrac
      @RvLeshrac 2 года назад

      Remember that they aren't "100 or so unique tiles with different printing and different colour acrylic," it is tens of thousands of tiles in each colour which are then run through a printer.
      There's some sort of weird mysticism around manufacturing. It isn't magic. All this stuff is, in fact, really cheap to do at scale.

    For me, the big one is your Point 2: this game is already out and available everywhere. Deluxifications are all well and good, but a heavy Euro like this, to me, doesn't benefit from them nearly as much as more thematic games do.
    Basically, if you've never felt compelled to buy this game before now, there's no reason to suddenly jump all in. And if you already own it: congratulations on having one of the most beloved board games of all time! Why do you need a second copy?

Ravensburger Australia does not even list the game anymore on their website! It sucks they're so expensive, but I would consider it. For my Orleans experience it may have been because I tend to rest my hand inside the bag and swirl them around while waiting for other people's turns, but after 10 or so plays I've started to notice some wear on that specific colour. But the other thing about the acrylics is that someone posted in the comments that they aren't going to have the double sided yellow tiles which was one of my favourite parts. So I don't know if I would pay that price to have an upgrade that I prefer less

    I'm late to this Kickstarter. It's in pre-order now, but it is one of my favourite games to play, but it's just too expensive. If you don't have this game and you can afford it, then yes, buy the game, but I have the anniversary version and am content. I've made bags for the tiles and I could sticker the backs if I wanted to, but the game is fine. Although, I did see someone make clay workers to replace the tiles, and that may be enough to bling my copy. I agree with everything you say, but although it's a pretty sweet looking new version, I just can't justify the cost. Oh, and I just subscribed so yeah me for that.

    For a game that I've been interested in for a while, but don't have, this looks like a lovely edition for the most part, but it's SO expensive (shipping alone looks like it would cost me around $40-$50 AUD). Add to that some odd choices they're currently showing such as this deluxe special edition not being entirely deluxe (some components are still cardboard), the weird board design as mentioned here, non-stackable victory point tokens, and more, it all feels a little too uncertain of a prospect to me for the price it would cost me. I'm also not a fan of their "unlocked stretch goals" which, from what I can tell, are just timed announcements that were always going to be included and not an actual stretch goal based on anything like money raised or number of backers.
    Think I'll be sitting this one out and I'll wait and see what becomes of it over the next year or so.

    I'm backing it because I like CoB, but don't have my own copy yet and was going to but one anyway. Yesterday, as per your prediction they announced minis for every tile and at the moment I am very much on the fence about them. I might get them to sell later on, however it all depends on how will they affect shipping (it's over 150 minis so I imagine the box for them will be quite big and heavy...)

    • @grey729
      @grey729 2 года назад +1

      I have had a bit of an internal conflict over the mini's too as the collector side of me wants to have it all and the mini's look nice but realistically its adding another $140 dollars to the price with added shipping and game play wise I can only imagine what its going to be like digging through trays of 150 minis to swap them out onto the board. On top of that I am running low on storage space and have both a zombicide full pledge and Lords of Ragnarok to fill my shelves. I want the mini's but I can't really invest more money nor bend time and space to store them.

    • @sekkachigaming
      @sekkachigaming 2 года назад

      @@grey729 I totally agree - the minis don't seem like the most practical solution gameplaywise and for that money you can buy a few other board games in retail or back another project.

    I'm disappointed that the box size for the no minis pledge is the same as the minis pledge. I really just want a smaller box with the acrylic tiles upgrade. Still I'm going to back at the Sundrop pledge, because COB is a game I already know I like a lot. Plus, I don't play a lot of new games at all, so it makes sense for me to enhance a game I already like than to be buying new games that'll never get played.

    Personally I feel like CoB is a testament to game mechanics. It’s a wildly successful game despite it’s infamously bad artwork and component quality. This new version kind of feels like a slap in the face. And considering the climate crisis/rise of shipping cost, it feels like a step in the wrong direction - clearly it’s a lateral move for a publisher like Awaken Realms, but Eagle-Griffon and Bezier have been on the deluxification of successful oop euro games for a minute. I’ll grant that Bezier at least provides a standard option but the general trend legitimately makes me angry. Like am I legit going to be expected to drop $400 on “Harry Potter Zombie-Teutonica” if I want to replace my copy of Hansa in 10 years?
