This game has sat on my shelf for years. My wife and I played it a handful of times. Since we got our new addition we’ve played it 6 times in three days. This edition is a game changer figuratively and literally.
Same here. It was difficult to teach with the tiny tiles and fiddly to set up. This is so much better, with the writing on the back of the tiles, the bags to mix them and the bigger tiles with the plastic grid. We played the old one just once or twice but have played this 3 times in 2 days. It also looks beautiful.
It looks amazing, and I love the acryllic tiles and so many of the improvements. I ended up not going for it because it was hard to justify spending so much on a game I already owned (and acquired secondhand for $20), and I do like how compact the first edition box is. Maybe I can go for it if I do a major cull down the road because I don't ever see CoB leaving my collection.
This is a very valid point, but I would say the cheapest version of the special edition is far better in value and production than the original with all expansions. Tracking down every prior expansion with the first edition base game I found was $220 before shipping and a task in itself to track down old prints of the expansions. Whereas the cheapest special edition without acrylic and minis was $85 and came with every expansion and the new expansions as well as the upgraded player boards. I think that makes the base special edition is well worth it in that case.

I went with option 4... The Royal Pledge (142 euros), comes with acrylic tiles, sundropped miniatures, playmat, but does not come with the 3D tiles, and I think I will be happy with it. The 3D tiles do seem like they will get in the way too much and will not be worth the extra money when the acrylic tiles are so nice to begin with. I have not played CofB yet, but from watching playthroughs I think it is a game I will enjoy very much.
Hopefully, you also got the acrylic tokens add-on. Many people didn't realize that the acrylic tiles that come with the Royal Pledge don't include the acrylic tokens that were later offered during the pledge manager.

Love this one! I passed on the minis (except the castles), which I’m ok with. I would have loved to have them too but they would have increased shelf and table space while making the gameplay a bit more cumbersome. I may try to track them down at a later date but for now I’m just so excited to get this to the table!
The box insert should have been built completely around the acrylics, then the cardboard only pledges could have had some foam or something to bulk out the extra space. Definitely the plastic overlay not matching the inserts is crappy quality control, out of all the playtesters no one noticed that problem??? Pretty crappy.
Where can I buy the premium edition that has the miniatures for the mines/bank/ships/buildings etc and the more premium/acrylic tiles? I can only find the special edition that has the castle miniatures but no the miniatures for the other buildings.
I'm THAT GUY who NEVER has played CoB before but still backed COB: Special Edition with acrylic tiles and Sundrop. (No mini pack or player mat) - so yeah pretty expensive for not knowing if the game is for me. LMAO The way I see it is, it's sitting at #17 on the BGG Top 100 games for a reason. I guess this game is pretty epic and I believe I will like it a lot. It's a classic and I want to explore this game from top to bottom. This premium version will be gorgeous on the table and I have a feeling I will love it.
Close to same boat. I backed all in never playing before and just this week started playing on BGA and now I can’t stop. I am very excited for my copy to arrive but potentially will sell some of the add ons the more unboxings I see. Takes up so much room and with the miniatures adding some time that just might make it too long playing with them
Im glad i didnt get those acrylic tiles...so much better havinng the tile descriptions on the back of the regular tiles. We found it so useful in games. Instead of going back and forth to the reference sheet.
Does the Acrylic tiles include tiles like the geese expansion? and all other expansions? or do we need to MIX acrylic with cardboard when we want to play with the expansions? Thanks
I've noticed something from Awaken Realms games: They are horrible at the small details. Game trays that don't fit in the box, mis-alignments, white pips on yellow dice, coloring issues. I remember previous games having many issues too. They just always seem to miss the overall package. They aim so high, but always seem to miss. I think this is what makes Awaken Realms an A-tier publisher and not an S-tier publisher. They just miss the overall target, get close, but miss.
One of the Nemesis expansions has a card count misprint in the rulebook. Led to me wasting hours digging through boxes trying to figure out where the two missing crafted gear cards were, only to google that it’s a misprint 🤦♂️
Correct. the same also applies to the Dutch version of War of the Rings (first edition). The Dutch manual states that there must be 7 dice of 1 color, while in the English version there must be 6. I bought the game second hand and the seller couldn't find the seventh one, so I got a discount. but I was able to find a set of 2 dice on the internet and ordered them. Only afterwards did I discover that the 7 was a printing error!
Good summary Alex. I didn't back the Special Edition as I don't play my old copy of Castle of Burgundy enough and when I do play it, I enjoy it (without the bells and whistles). I hear ya on your pet peeve of the tile overlay - I have the same pet peeve with my Azul overlay. Other reasons I didn't back include the cost (especially once converted to New Zealand dollars) and just not having the space these days for big box games. I think the acrylic tiles look great but overall, I can't justify the cost, and that includes on most Kickstarters now. Sadly cost of living increases (and a weak NZ$).
What are your feelings concerning the playmat? I got it as part of the pledgelevel I chose, but am thinking of selling the playmat in order to "part finance" the rest of the pledge. Or is it a keeper?

I think you missed pointing out the huge amount of mini expansions (team mode etc.) included in this version + 2 exclusive major expansions (vineyard and solo mode) which come with the box and are worth a ton of money on their own. It´s not only the better game components in the special edition.

I've noticed the disalignment between tiles and acrylic grid right from the beginning, it's a little thing but it is reaaaally annoying. Also, we are talking about a premium product and that is something that would have been easily fixable
No. Alea/Ravens sold us our by printing a nice edition in 2019 and then instead of offering new content with acrylic tiles, they handed the rights over to Awaken Realms, a mini-driven company which has no business producing this style of game. It was an easy cash grab on wildly overproducing one of the longest celebrated euros. Sucks. I bought it, but it was a very frustrating purchase. I was very happy with theb2019 edition. TONS of content for $35-40. No one is going to be using them after a handful of games.

I got the base level (with the sundrop for the castles) pledge. I only got into boardgames within the last 4 years or so, and I've never owned a copy of this. But I fell in love with this game on BGA. So, for me, it felt worth getting this base edition. I'm not someone who feels like minis are critically important, so that's why I didn't go for the all-in.
There was a comment about being new to this game and still backing with the acrylic add-ons. I did that along with the playmat. My family loves European History and I believe this aesthetic and theme will draw them into it. Was it an excessive purchase? Probably. That being said, I believe that I’ll have a great time with this game. Tactile feel and artistic experience are huge factors in my enjoyment of the hobby so I really believe this will ultimately feel worth it to me personally.
Wow, I bought this game with acrylics, haven't played previously and found I love this game, I was worried about acrylic tiles not having printing on the back (I was prepared to download stickers they provide to put on back) but discovered dont need to the game is not hard to pick up and the reference sheet is amazing as tiles have a number you can cross reference. great game, no regrets!!! 😀😀😀
To be fair, if you got the acrylic tiles and the neoprene mat, you basically have two copies of the game in one package. Add an extra set of dice and player/progress markers and you'd have two playable versions of the base game (minimally). Also, if some ingenious person(s) creates a set of 2-sided neoprene player boards, you'd have a version to bring camping or play in the hot tub.

What do you think of the new Vineyard expansion, Alex? That was the thing I was most interested in. Ultimately, I passed on pledging because I couldn't justify to myself making that pledge just for the one expansion, (though if there was a decent secondhand copy later...) As it is, we don't play with all the expansions right now, just the Trade Routes (always) and the White Castle (most of the time).
We are new owning CoB, but always believed it was "our type of game" and backed the basic pledge. It is more than well worth the difference between the cost of the basic older game and this mega one. Bigger tiles, tile rules printed on the tiles, loads of duchy variations, many expansions, quality components and a great look and feel. Once we had read the basic rules we never had to refer to the rule book again; everything is either on the board, on the tiles or included on the well-designed help cards.
David Turczi's solo mode and the Stefan Felds vinyard expanion make it a no brainer for me. And with all the negativity around pricing, compared to other games this is a serious bargain. Acrylic tiles for 33€ I have no idea how were able to make that possible at that price point. They have to be subsidizing the costs, I can't imagine they are making any money on these. Others would price these at 50€ and that would have been fair. 20€ for acrylic everything else, thats insane?! Others would price this at least at 30€. This is all including taxes. Other companies would add that on top and again that would be fair. 85€ for a great base game with all expansions in existance with two exclusive expansions that are HUGE. How is this only 85€?! And minis for 10€ more?! Madness! Those coins would be atleast a 15€ upgrade in other campaigns. Wood and bags atleast 15€ aswell. So the Gameplay All In gameplay costs 55€... absolute madness. I doubt any money is being made here..
The overlay not fitting will drive me nuts! It's either lazy testing and not fully caring about the customer experience, both things are bad. After watching this video, I'm so happy that I went with the base version.
Great work, though I almost need to slow your video down by a third to half to keep up with you, he he. You mentioned three different options of purchasing on the end. For me (and I like Castles of Burgundy a lot), the number one reason I would buy the new version is for the writing on the back of the tiles. So I would probable save the money because I do not need the upgraded acrylic tiles. I have another game that has a similar feature, and boy that is nice. It beats player aids hands down. The one thing I saw that I really do not care for is the change of color of the castles. I wish they could have kept the old color.
Love this edition. Got it twice. Once for me and once for my parents who played this game over 1000 times. My acrylic hex tiles arrived, neither arrived with the acrylic score tiles or workers; which is a shame. Our only negative is the Knowledge tiles for four points per building, the icon of which building it scores for is so small it’s almost impossible to see. Definitely for an 80 year old, and the reference sheet just says “four points for each of the listed building type” so it’s useless. We have to get out a phone or magnifier to actually see what the tile is. Everything else is amazing and we play this game 2-3 times a week.
So... the player aid is about 1000% better than what was included in the version I have... playing with the bakelite tiles? Refer to the amazingly useful player aid!!!!
You know when you see a burger join advertise their tripple patty, double bacon cheese burger with a fried egg on top? And you say...well no wonder everyone is over weight/health issues these days. dk this gives me those vibes. Keeping my 10th anniversary. But hey, no harm in liking this version for all the fans out there.
There have been a few pledges similar to this one that I've backed that i wonder if i shouldve just bought retail. Im glad I'm getting this one with all the premium components. But without calling out the others by name, i wish i didnt back a few and just bought them for cheaper at retail (current preorder sale prices) since the extras from KS isnt anything special or needed. I wont miss the extras and feel jipped. Uts made me no longer back certain companies on crowd funding.
I have never played Castles of Burgundy but I've watched enough RUclips videos of playthroughs that I knew I would love the game... so I forked over about $150 USD for the special edition. I feel it was worth it. I'm glad I didn't pay extra for the acrylic tiles since I am new to the game and rely on the print on the back of the hexes. I am very happy with my purchase.
I’ve also heard the complaints regarding the acrylic tiles not having text. For me, this seems like an odd issue since there are player aids. I’d much rather look at the player aids a few games than have tiles upside down and not see the art. To each their own. I’m not judging others. I simply feel like it’s a complaint that doesn’t resonate with me very much.
Awaken Realms still can't make inserts right. They just need to hire it out, because they have consistently failed on this. Too many publishers, especially crowd funding ones, just don't realize how hard it is to make a good insert and do it right. I'd say that three-quarters of the inserts in games I get, many crowd funded, are just complete trash and I end up having to 3D print a proper one. I wish they'd just get professionals to do it, or don't waste the time and money on doing a half-assed job.
I have the older Alea version and had no idea that the 2019 version had rules on the tiles, so for me, this is really a non-issue. I didn't expect Awaken to create an insert for the acrylic stuff because it was an optional add-on. As far as the building minis, it has literally been known since they announced them in the campaign how they work, so anyone having issues with that should pay attention more.
I would have told you it was absolutely worth it, until I found out the acrylic tiles do not have the text descriptions on them. Because just having the description on the tiles would have been fantastic. At some point I'll need to make some stickers for the backs of the acrylics. It's also a pain that they didn't make the box just accommodate the acrylics. I don't think the buildings were worth it because that just would have been a pain in the ass to use. Not the castles mind you, but the additional buildings What I mean by pain in the butt is that pulling the tiles from the bags, switching them out for buildings mid play, is just a lot. So I guess I land on no, I should not have bought this. Actually the new boards, and a copy of the same board for everyone, thats nice. So I'll recant back to a middle position that without the buildings its worth it if you love the game.
Isn't the player aid anyway better/faster way to check the tile description than turning the tiles around? I mean, it would have been nice to have the description on the acrylis tiles as well, but I don't think I would use them much
@@Deadomen123I was initially upset about this and then the more I thought about it, I think the player aid is easier. It could be disruptive keeping pulling up every single tile looking at them. But I’ll definitely get stickers when they are available.
100% imo that the player aids are WAY easier than having to pick up already placed tiles to check the abilities, or ask other players to do so for you.
Yeah your two reasons (insert not being designed for them and no descriptions on back) is why I did not back the acrylic tiles... and the tiles were never happening for me due to the space and cost. I stuck to the base pledge and figured that was a good balance of cost vs premium and am very much looking forward to it.
Good overview. I'm hoping someone will replicate the tile text for clear vinyl printing aftermarket. For the price of all in, there is no excuse for not providing an improved insert and alligned tile sheets!
It's so funny that people refer to all the expansions in this edition as one of the main selling points, the other being the component quality. Personally I prefer the humble components of the original version and haven't been induced by any visual upgrades so far. But as far as the expansions go, it's hilarious. When I bought a copy of Notre Dame it came with an expansion for Burgundy and I still keep it in the Notre Dame box. That's how interested I am in them. Gosh sometimes I'm so thankful for consumerism. If more people were like me the industry would die and what good would that do me?
I'm a little confused... this was a campaign I backed a while ago, and I'm waiting for it to arrive soon. But I didn't get everything, and am regretting that a bit. But you're talking about this like it's something people can just go get right now? Is it still available for people to get? Can I pick up the tokens?
I also missed the tokens. I have got the acrylic hexes but not the tokens. At the time of backing I was not clear about the situation. So I will leave the acrylic hex in the box right away. I will not even open the box one. They will be seald until i got the tokens at retail or sale of leftovers. If i cant geht my hand on the acrylic tokens, I will only play with all cardboard. I dont like the Idea of having half acrylic und half cardboard. Specially the workers!
I think he means the original games before this version from Awaken Realms, they are still available. Of course you'd trade the looks and bling for a way lower pricepoint.
@M. Haas this was my exact situation. I got gameplay all-in, saw the description included acrylic hexes, and didn't realize there was a different acrylic tokens set.
I may simply add some accent colors to the buildings. This is, painting the base to match the main hex color and like paint the bank tower roofs silver.
I love the game. I love the way this version looks. I can't wait to have it in hand. I cannot rationally justify the cost. But not all justification is rational. I will enjoy this immensely.
I opted out of the minis because of the extra overhead and table space. I didn't even think about the presentation. Looking straight down at the board is really lack luster with the minis.
The overlay not lining up, and some of other things will drive my ocd crazy. I get tunnel vision on the smallest things and obsess for months. And I'm someone who has never played the game before or seen it before this campaign, and I backed the royal sundrop and added on the mat and tokens lol. But this is the case with everything I've backed on Gamefound or Kickstarter over the past few years. Every game has been brand new to me, and I've enjoyed each one so far.
Wish you have shown the retail version insted of rubbing in our faces that you got all the extra content, because we all want, if we could afford it, the acrylic tiles and such, this is one of my favorite games of all time, I'm just a litte tired that everybody show all that you miss if you don't pay the all inn campaign.
I decided to wait and see if there will be a retail version of this game with the new art. I felt annoyed that the components I'd expect from a deluxified version were thrown as costly addons, some of which were told not to fit in the core box, and the rest of the deluxifications felt lacking (disappointed in the dice especially even after changes to readability).
Then the basic pledges would of all have been 30€ higher? I get the insert issue but come on. The add ons if you compare it to other deluxified add ons for other games are dirt cheap
@@stormburns What is cheap or expensive is subjective, and I'm glad for everyone for whom this version was perfect both in price and content. As someone who's only played the game once all I was looking for was better art and maybe blinged up quality components. And I'll get the better art from when it hits retail.
I liked Castles when I first played it, but found it annoying looking at the player aid all the time to remember what all the monasteries did and couldn't stay interested. Then I discovered it on BGA and the tooltips resulted in me playing the game a dozen times a week. So it was a no-brainer to get the Special Edition (no miniatures) because of the text being printed on the tiles. After playing it enough on BGA, I've mostly memorized the tiles, so I also got the acrylic tiles for when I play with others that know the game well. That's all I felt I needed though. The miniatures (like the miniatures for Catan or Terraforming Mars) were a bit too much for me.
huh. 19:30 The inserts were built around basic tiles...I could have sworn during the campaign it was promised that the inserts would easily fit the acrylic tiles You bring up some really good points. The production of the game at a high level is amazing but it's the small misses, e.g. the hex and overlay or the tile inserts, that will really disappoint for a premium/deluxe/collector's edition of a game. These oversights are surprising considering it's AR that produced it
It is amazing game and the default special edition is major improvement over the original and very worth it the acyclic tiles is almost a must but the cardbords are just fine. The minis are amazing but dont add that much for the price plus a bit of work while playing. So love the completeversion but the base special is already amazing value
Also you are kinda saying that this is not the definitive version of the game because they didn't listen to the backers. Lots of people were very very vocal about getting all the acrylics to fit in the box, that i think was the biggest mistake of this project, i know the text on the back of the acrylics was bought up a lot but that is pretty much solved with the player aids. Also i hope Awaken Realms look at how they ran this project and improve on the next projects, mainly the lack of seeing the finished project before the pledge manager closed, that put a lot of people off.
While I am not a fan of most of the overproduced plastic toy fests that is modern crowdfunded projects, I am a fan of big bog heirloom editions (I'm giving you a free marketing term here boardgame industry please feel free to use it), of time-tested games. Games like Ticket to Ride 10th Anniversary Edition, Catan 10th Anniversary, and now Castles of Burgundy, and judging by how well it did so does much of the board game community. I only wish some companies would take note and do for games like Agricola, Terra Mystica, and Terraforming Mars what Awakened Realms did for CotB. (That Agricola 15th anniversary edition is just shameful.)
But the pawn to count points it's absolutely not ergonomic. It happens a lot to be even in the points track. It is very uncomfortable to set them in the same space, in particular when you play in 4 players.
I personally think descriptions on the back of the tiles were more of a player nuisance, I personally would be annoyed playing a 4 player game with 3 people reaching and grabbing tiles on my turn constantly picking up and down the tiles I am trying to work and plan with. I have seen a play review where someone acknowledges this and it validated my concerns. I think keeping the acrylic tiles language-independent was a smart move for production. Especially when player aides literally have all the info right there for you and allow you to look at more tiles descriptions faster picking up one player aide as opposed to someone grabbing a tile flipping it over setting it down and repeating every turn on and off their turn.
I’d love to see a gameplay video with these components. You play it enough that it could be easy content. Could also use a “how to play” video from an expert such as yourself.
Was getting the version with the acrylic hexes during the campaign, but when i found out that there wasnt going to be text on the back, i dropped down to the 95$ version.. but now Im sitting back with a sour taste i my mouth before the game have arrived 😕
I was going to back this but then I watched room and board five reasons not to and got the special edition for I think 45 shipped. Incredibly happy with my decision. Yeah the minis look nice and all but the game is pretty much the same.
The most annoying thing for me is that the insert is not ment for your premium stuff. yes I got the acrylic tokens and tiles and yes I knew it wasnt ment to fit, cause they mentioned it alot. But still, I cant have a deluxe edition while I still have cardboard arround, and I still think they should have made it fit. probably it was all designed with the retail edition in the back of their minds.
Personally I think it is worth it no matter what tiles you get. Get what you like. This is an investment. The price is good. This coming from someone who has thousands of dollars invested in 40k. The first thing any player/gamer should think before buying anything. How much time am I going to dedicate to this game? How many times will I play this game in a week, month, year? Happy gaming everyone, may your days be filled with new players and your games be ever improving.
The game is great, hands down. But is this edition worth it? I think it's not. I got the Anniversary Edition and I'm more than fine with it. Is the game playable with the original or enhanced retail edition? Surely it is. I'd rather spend the money of this mega box onto other games I don't have. Just my 2 cents.
Argh the overlay and the board sheet not lining up. That would make my skin itch haha. I could see it not bothering most people and should bother us but my self-diagnosed OCD would never let me look away from that.
I ummed and aahed on all the add-ons on this for a while but in the end just went with the basic Special Edition. The deluxe add-ons looked nice...but the price for them did not.

My all-in arrived this week. Thanks for the video. 19:46 Noticed the tape on one edge of the box. I was thinking how unfortunate that is for you when i started to put everything back in the box and an edge also ripped on mine 😢 i decided to tape it on the inside tho to hide the sheen.
Love this one! I passed on the minis (except the castles), which I’m ok with. I would have loved to have them too but they would have increased shelf and table space while making the gameplay a bit more cumbersome. I may try to track them down at a later date but for now I’m just so excited to get this to the table!

The box insert should have been built completely around the acrylics, then the cardboard only pledges could have had some foam or something to bulk out the extra space.
Definitely the plastic overlay not matching the inserts is crappy quality control, out of all the playtesters no one noticed that problem??? Pretty crappy.
Where can I buy the premium edition that has the miniatures for the mines/bank/ships/buildings etc and the more premium/acrylic tiles? I can only find the special edition that has the castle miniatures but no the miniatures for the other buildings.
I'm THAT GUY who NEVER has played CoB before but still backed COB: Special Edition with acrylic tiles and Sundrop. (No mini pack or player mat) - so yeah pretty expensive for not knowing if the game is for me. LMAO The way I see it is, it's sitting at #17 on the BGG Top 100 games for a reason. I guess this game is pretty epic and I believe I will like it a lot. It's a classic and I want to explore this game from top to bottom. This premium version will be gorgeous on the table and I have a feeling I will love it.
Close to same boat. I backed all in never playing before and just this week started playing on BGA and now I can’t stop. I am very excited for my copy to arrive but potentially will sell some of the add ons the more unboxings I see. Takes up so much room and with the miniatures adding some time that just might make it too long playing with them
Im glad i didnt get those acrylic tiles...so much better havinng the tile descriptions on the back of the regular tiles. We found it so useful in games. Instead of going back and forth to the reference sheet.

Yes on expansions , but there are two different Acrylic sets if you wanted everything.

I've noticed something from Awaken Realms games: They are horrible at the small details.
Game trays that don't fit in the box, mis-alignments, white pips on yellow dice, coloring issues.
I remember previous games having many issues too. They just always seem to miss the overall package. They aim so high, but always seem to miss.
I think this is what makes Awaken Realms an A-tier publisher and not an S-tier publisher. They just miss the overall target, get close, but miss.
One of the Nemesis expansions has a card count misprint in the rulebook. Led to me wasting hours digging through boxes trying to figure out where the two missing crafted gear cards were, only to google that it’s a misprint 🤦♂️
Correct. the same also applies to the Dutch version of War of the Rings (first edition). The Dutch manual states that there must be 7 dice of 1 color, while in the English version there must be 6. I bought the game second hand and the seller couldn't find the seventh one, so I got a discount. but I was able to find a set of 2 dice on the internet and ordered them. Only afterwards did I discover that the 7 was a printing error!
Good summary Alex. I didn't back the Special Edition as I don't play my old copy of Castle of Burgundy enough and when I do play it, I enjoy it (without the bells and whistles). I hear ya on your pet peeve of the tile overlay - I have the same pet peeve with my Azul overlay. Other reasons I didn't back include the cost (especially once converted to New Zealand dollars) and just not having the space these days for big box games. I think the acrylic tiles look great but overall, I can't justify the cost, and that includes on most Kickstarters now. Sadly cost of living increases (and a weak NZ$).

What are your feelings concerning the playmat? I got it as part of the pledgelevel I chose, but am thinking of selling the playmat in order to "part finance" the rest of the pledge. Or is it a keeper?
I actually really like the play mat, and while it doesn't fit in the box, it does fit nicely next to it on the shelf
for $200-300 u can buy 4-5 games. so i just bought burgundy and skipped the other 4 games. easy. 😊

I think you missed pointing out the huge amount of mini expansions (team mode etc.) included in this version + 2 exclusive major expansions (vineyard and solo mode) which come with the box and are worth a ton of money on their own. It´s not only the better game components in the special edition.
The most recent edition before this, had nearly all of the expansions included. This one definitely has the vineyards expansion though.

I've noticed the disalignment between tiles and acrylic grid right from the beginning, it's a little thing but it is reaaaally annoying. Also, we are talking about a premium product and that is something that would have been easily fixable
No. Alea/Ravens sold us our by printing a nice edition in 2019 and then instead of offering new content with acrylic tiles, they handed the rights over to Awaken Realms, a mini-driven company which has no business producing this style of game. It was an easy cash grab on wildly overproducing one of the longest celebrated euros. Sucks. I bought it, but it was a very frustrating purchase. I was very happy with theb2019 edition. TONS of content for $35-40. No one is going to be using them after a handful of games.

I got the base level (with the sundrop for the castles) pledge. I only got into boardgames within the last 4 years or so, and I've never owned a copy of this. But I fell in love with this game on BGA. So, for me, it felt worth getting this base edition. I'm not someone who feels like minis are critically important, so that's why I didn't go for the all-in.
One of the few KS’s I’ve went All In. Time will tell if I regret doing so.
There was a comment about being new to this game and still backing with the acrylic add-ons. I did that along with the playmat. My family loves European History and I believe this aesthetic and theme will draw them into it.
Was it an excessive purchase? Probably. That being said, I believe that I’ll have a great time with this game. Tactile feel and artistic experience are huge factors in my enjoyment of the hobby so I really believe this will ultimately feel worth it to me personally.
I 100% agree. One would think that they would have a gap between the map hexes to allow for the overlay grid.

Wow, I bought this game with acrylics, haven't played previously and found I love this game, I was worried about acrylic tiles not having printing on the back (I was prepared to download stickers they provide to put on back) but discovered dont need to the game is not hard to pick up and the reference sheet is amazing as tiles have a number you can cross reference. great game, no regrets!!! 😀😀😀
I'm so glad I backed the normal pledge. The acrylic tiles do nothing for me and love the idea of the reverse printing
To be fair, if you got the acrylic tiles and the neoprene mat, you basically have two copies of the game in one package. Add an extra set of dice and player/progress markers and you'd have two playable versions of the base game (minimally). Also, if some ingenious person(s) creates a set of 2-sided neoprene player boards, you'd have a version to bring camping or play in the hot tub.

What do you think of the new Vineyard expansion, Alex? That was the thing I was most interested in. Ultimately, I passed on pledging because I couldn't justify to myself making that pledge just for the one expansion, (though if there was a decent secondhand copy later...) As it is, we don't play with all the expansions right now, just the Trade Routes (always) and the White Castle (most of the time).

The pet peeves are not pet peeves at all. For the price we paid for this version, those are unfortunate oversights.
Nothing will ever be perfect for everyone. It's always tricky knowing what's a reasoable complaint vs my own personal peeves.

We are new owning CoB, but always believed it was "our type of game" and backed the basic pledge. It is more than well worth the difference between the cost of the basic older game and this mega one. Bigger tiles, tile rules printed on the tiles, loads of duchy variations, many expansions, quality components and a great look and feel. Once we had read the basic rules we never had to refer to the rule book again; everything is either on the board, on the tiles or included on the well-designed help cards.
I just got the acrylic hex tiles and stickers. I'm a happy gamer.
David Turczi's solo mode and the Stefan Felds vinyard expanion make it a no brainer for me.
And with all the negativity around pricing, compared to other games this is a serious bargain.
Acrylic tiles for 33€ I have no idea how were able to make that possible at that price point. They have to be subsidizing the costs, I can't imagine they are making any money on these. Others would price these at 50€ and that would have been fair. 20€ for acrylic everything else, thats insane?! Others would price this at least at 30€.
This is all including taxes. Other companies would add that on top and again that would be fair.
85€ for a great base game with all expansions in existance with two exclusive expansions that are HUGE. How is this only 85€?! And minis for 10€ more?! Madness!
Those coins would be atleast a 15€ upgrade in other campaigns. Wood and bags atleast 15€ aswell. So the Gameplay All In gameplay costs 55€... absolute madness. I doubt any money is being made here..
The overlay not fitting will drive me nuts! It's either lazy testing and not fully caring about the customer experience, both things are bad. After watching this video, I'm so happy that I went with the base version.

For me (and I like Castles of Burgundy a lot), the number one reason I would buy the new version is for the writing on the back of the tiles. So I would probable save the money because I do not need the upgraded acrylic tiles. I have another game that has a similar feature, and boy that is nice. It beats player aids hands down. The one thing I saw that I really do not care for is the change of color of the castles. I wish they could have kept the old color.
Love this edition. Got it twice. Once for me and once for my parents who played this game over 1000 times.
My acrylic hex tiles arrived, neither arrived with the acrylic score tiles or workers; which is a shame.
Our only negative is the Knowledge tiles for four points per building, the icon of which building it scores for is so small it’s almost impossible to see. Definitely for an 80 year old, and the reference sheet just says “four points for each of the listed building type” so it’s useless.
We have to get out a phone or magnifier to actually see what the tile is.
Everything else is amazing and we play this game 2-3 times a week.
So... the player aid is about 1000% better than what was included in the version I have... playing with the bakelite tiles? Refer to the amazingly useful player aid!!!!

There have been a few pledges similar to this one that I've backed that i wonder if i shouldve just bought retail. Im glad I'm getting this one with all the premium components. But without calling out the others by name, i wish i didnt back a few and just bought them for cheaper at retail (current preorder sale prices) since the extras from KS isnt anything special or needed. I wont miss the extras and feel jipped. Uts made me no longer back certain companies on crowd funding.
I have never played Castles of Burgundy but I've watched enough RUclips videos of playthroughs that I knew I would love the game... so I forked over about $150 USD for the special edition. I feel it was worth it. I'm glad I didn't pay extra for the acrylic tiles since I am new to the game and rely on the print on the back of the hexes. I am very happy with my purchase.
I’ve also heard the complaints regarding the acrylic tiles not having text. For me, this seems like an odd issue since there are player aids. I’d much rather look at the player aids a few games than have tiles upside down and not see the art.
To each their own. I’m not judging others. I simply feel like it’s a complaint that doesn’t resonate with me very much.
Awaken Realms still can't make inserts right. They just need to hire it out, because they have consistently failed on this.
Too many publishers, especially crowd funding ones, just don't realize how hard it is to make a good insert and do it right. I'd say that three-quarters of the inserts in games I get, many crowd funded, are just complete trash and I end up having to 3D print a proper one.
I wish they'd just get professionals to do it, or don't waste the time and money on doing a half-assed job.
I have the older Alea version and had no idea that the 2019 version had rules on the tiles, so for me, this is really a non-issue. I didn't expect Awaken to create an insert for the acrylic stuff because it was an optional add-on. As far as the building minis, it has literally been known since they announced them in the campaign how they work, so anyone having issues with that should pay attention more.
I went all-in with this game and am eagerly waiting for my copy.
I would have told you it was absolutely worth it, until I found out the acrylic tiles do not have the text descriptions on them. Because just having the description on the tiles would have been fantastic. At some point I'll need to make some stickers for the backs of the acrylics.
It's also a pain that they didn't make the box just accommodate the acrylics.
I don't think the buildings were worth it because that just would have been a pain in the ass to use. Not the castles mind you, but the additional buildings What I mean by pain in the butt is that pulling the tiles from the bags, switching them out for buildings mid play, is just a lot.
So I guess I land on no, I should not have bought this. Actually the new boards, and a copy of the same board for everyone, thats nice. So I'll recant back to a middle position that without the buildings its worth it if you love the game.
Isn't the player aid anyway better/faster way to check the tile description than turning the tiles around? I mean, it would have been nice to have the description on the acrylis tiles as well, but I don't think I would use them much
@@Deadomen123I was initially upset about this and then the more I thought about it, I think the player aid is easier. It could be disruptive keeping pulling up every single tile looking at them. But I’ll definitely get stickers when they are available.
100% imo that the player aids are WAY easier than having to pick up already placed tiles to check the abilities, or ask other players to do so for you.
Yeah your two reasons (insert not being designed for them and no descriptions on back) is why I did not back the acrylic tiles... and the tiles were never happening for me due to the space and cost. I stuck to the base pledge and figured that was a good balance of cost vs premium and am very much looking forward to it.
Good overview. I'm hoping someone will replicate the tile text for clear vinyl printing aftermarket. For the price of all in, there is no excuse for not providing an improved insert and alligned tile sheets!

It's so funny that people refer to all the expansions in this edition as one of the main selling points, the other being the component quality. Personally I prefer the humble components of the original version and haven't been induced by any visual upgrades so far. But as far as the expansions go, it's hilarious. When I bought a copy of Notre Dame it came with an expansion for Burgundy and I still keep it in the Notre Dame box. That's how interested I am in them. Gosh sometimes I'm so thankful for consumerism. If more people were like me the industry would die and what good would that do me?
I'm a little confused... this was a campaign I backed a while ago, and I'm waiting for it to arrive soon. But I didn't get everything, and am regretting that a bit. But you're talking about this like it's something people can just go get right now? Is it still available for people to get? Can I pick up the tokens?
I also missed the tokens. I have got the acrylic hexes but not the tokens. At the time of backing I was not clear about the situation. So I will leave the acrylic hex in the box right away. I will not even open the box one. They will be seald until i got the tokens at retail or sale of leftovers. If i cant geht my hand on the acrylic tokens, I will only play with all cardboard. I dont like the Idea of having half acrylic und half cardboard. Specially the workers!
I think he means the original games before this version from Awaken Realms, they are still available. Of course you'd trade the looks and bling for a way lower pricepoint.

You skipped the best pledge level IMHO: Just add the acrylic tiles and tokens. I love the tiles.
I may simply add some accent colors to the buildings. This is, painting the base to match the main hex color and like paint the bank tower roofs silver.
I love the game. I love the way this version looks. I can't wait to have it in hand. I cannot rationally justify the cost. But not all justification is rational. I will enjoy this immensely.

I opted out of the minis because of the extra overhead and table space. I didn't even think about the presentation. Looking straight down at the board is really lack luster with the minis.
The overlay not lining up, and some of other things will drive my ocd crazy. I get tunnel vision on the smallest things and obsess for months.
And I'm someone who has never played the game before or seen it before this campaign, and I backed the royal sundrop and added on the mat and tokens lol. But this is the case with everything I've backed on Gamefound or Kickstarter over the past few years. Every game has been brand new to me, and I've enjoyed each one so far.
Wish you have shown the retail version insted of rubbing in our faces that you got all the extra content, because we all want, if we could afford it, the acrylic tiles and such, this is one of my favorite games of all time, I'm just a litte tired that everybody show all that you miss if you don't pay the all inn campaign.

I decided to wait and see if there will be a retail version of this game with the new art. I felt annoyed that the components I'd expect from a deluxified version were thrown as costly addons, some of which were told not to fit in the core box, and the rest of the deluxifications felt lacking (disappointed in the dice especially even after changes to readability).
Then the basic pledges would of all have been 30€ higher? I get the insert issue but come on. The add ons if you compare it to other deluxified add ons for other games are dirt cheap
@@stormburns What is cheap or expensive is subjective, and I'm glad for everyone for whom this version was perfect both in price and content. As someone who's only played the game once all I was looking for was better art and maybe blinged up quality components. And I'll get the better art from when it hits retail.
Someone who knows how to paint minis will turn this game into a masterpiece.
I liked Castles when I first played it, but found it annoying looking at the player aid all the time to remember what all the monasteries did and couldn't stay interested. Then I discovered it on BGA and the tooltips resulted in me playing the game a dozen times a week. So it was a no-brainer to get the Special Edition (no miniatures) because of the text being printed on the tiles. After playing it enough on BGA, I've mostly memorized the tiles, so I also got the acrylic tiles for when I play with others that know the game well. That's all I felt I needed though. The miniatures (like the miniatures for Catan or Terraforming Mars) were a bit too much for me.

You bring up some really good points. The production of the game at a high level is amazing but it's the small misses, e.g. the hex and overlay or the tile inserts, that will really disappoint for a premium/deluxe/collector's edition of a game. These oversights are surprising considering it's AR that produced it

It is amazing game and the default special edition is major improvement over the original and very worth it the acyclic tiles is almost a must but the cardbords are just fine. The minis are amazing but dont add that much for the price plus a bit of work while playing. So love the completeversion but the base special is already amazing value
Also you are kinda saying that this is not the definitive version of the game because they didn't listen to the backers.
Lots of people were very very vocal about getting all the acrylics to fit in the box, that i think was the biggest mistake of this project, i know the text on the back of the acrylics was bought up a lot but that is pretty much solved with the player aids.
Also i hope Awaken Realms look at how they ran this project and improve on the next projects, mainly the lack of seeing the finished project before the pledge manager closed, that put a lot of people off.

While I am not a fan of most of the overproduced plastic toy fests that is modern crowdfunded projects, I am a fan of big bog heirloom editions (I'm giving you a free marketing term here boardgame industry please feel free to use it), of time-tested games. Games like Ticket to Ride 10th Anniversary Edition, Catan 10th Anniversary, and now Castles of Burgundy, and judging by how well it did so does much of the board game community. I only wish some companies would take note and do for games like Agricola, Terra Mystica, and Terraforming Mars what Awakened Realms did for CotB. (That Agricola 15th anniversary edition is just shameful.)

But the pawn to count points it's absolutely not ergonomic. It happens a lot to be even in the points track. It is very uncomfortable to set them in the same space, in particular when you play in 4 players.
I personally think descriptions on the back of the tiles were more of a player nuisance, I personally would be annoyed playing a 4 player game with 3 people reaching and grabbing tiles on my turn constantly picking up and down the tiles I am trying to work and plan with. I have seen a play review where someone acknowledges this and it validated my concerns. I think keeping the acrylic tiles language-independent was a smart move for production. Especially when player aides literally have all the info right there for you and allow you to look at more tiles descriptions faster picking up one player aide as opposed to someone grabbing a tile flipping it over setting it down and repeating every turn on and off their turn.

I was going to back this but then I watched room and board five reasons not to and got the special edition for I think 45 shipped. Incredibly happy with my decision. Yeah the minis look nice and all but the game is pretty much the same.
The most annoying thing for me is that the insert is not ment for your premium stuff. yes I got the acrylic tokens and tiles and yes I knew it wasnt ment to fit, cause they mentioned it alot. But still, I cant have a deluxe edition while I still have cardboard arround, and I still think they should have made it fit. probably it was all designed with the retail edition in the back of their minds.

Personally I think it is worth it no matter what tiles you get. Get what you like. This is an investment. The price is good. This coming from someone who has thousands of dollars invested in 40k.
The first thing any player/gamer should think before buying anything. How much time am I going to dedicate to this game? How many times will I play this game in a week, month, year?

The game is great, hands down. But is this edition worth it? I think it's not. I got the Anniversary Edition and I'm more than fine with it. Is the game playable with the original or enhanced retail edition? Surely it is. I'd rather spend the money of this mega box onto other games I don't have. Just my 2 cents.
I think the same. I love the 2019 edition. The box is small, it is very portable and it doesn't take too much space in my shelf.

I ummed and aahed on all the add-ons on this for a while but in the end just went with the basic Special Edition. The deluxe add-ons looked nice...but the price for them did not.
I’ll see what the retail version and expansion cost when it goes to retail. If it’s expensive I’ll get the 2nd edition. I don’t need it “beeger”😊
