NOTE: In both the original Castles of Burgundy (and also the anniversary edition shown here), the English rules translated the original German rules wrong when it comes to tie-breaker rules. The tiebreaker rule should be that if there is a tie, the tied player with the *most* unused hex spaces in their duchy wins the game.

So very true! My girlfriend at the time had this game in her shelf of shame cause couldn't get through the rulebook. So I took it home and couldn't get through it either. Then once I watched this I was able to play and teach people this amazing game!
This is such a nice game. My local boardgames shop recommended it as his favorite 1v1 game and I must agree, it is now my most played game with my S.O.

Such a beloved classic! Oddly, I prefer the more earthy, pastel tones of the original version but this new one is super bright and colorful, it really cheers you up.

I'm glad more people will learn and play the game, it's my second favorite game of all time, but I'm sticking to my original copy. I'm extremely fond of my humble alea versions. I have all of Feld's games in that series, except maybe one.

Just played the special edition from Awaken Realms with my wife. Such a beautiful, elegant game. Rodney, as always is my pinch hitter for rules teaching. This video really has withstood the test of time and is still relevant. Thanks again for making these games accessible.

As an aside, not only does the player reference help with reminding you which building does what, but also the tiles themselves have colors and symbols that correspond with its bonus action.
The market has green/blue buildings for the livestock and ship colors. The carpenter’s workshop has a beige roof for the beige building colors. The church has green, yellow, and silver colored sides. The warehouse has a red roof. The boarding house has four gables. The bank has two silver domes. The town hall is omnicolored. The watch tower doesn’t need explanation lol.

This is SO timely. I got this recently on a song when there was a sale, but it's still sitting on my shelf of shame/opportunity. A rules video means I'm so much more likely to actually get it to the table!

@@WatchItPlayed I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. The decision space is great, and that overcomes the boring (to me) theme and rather dry mechanics. Also, I prefer tactics over strategy (which is why I have trouble with a lot of euros) and this one was highly tactical. I'm glad I added it to my collection!

Awesome! I asked about a tutorial for Castles back during the Q & A a few weeks back so I’m glad they did it. My first time seeing the game played was when Rodney played it on Game Night. I found the video about two months ago and after watching, I immediately looked for a copy for myself. This game is amazing especially when you line up a super “Spicey” combo! Love it when monasteries help you practically break the game! 😁 Great video as always!
Yeah, the combos here can be really fun, chaining off a castle placement, or other elements.

The main differences are the art, and that this edition includes several of the expansions. The rules, as I understand it are the same. Greetings back from Canada!

My wife saw this video and she put it on the Christmas list. So I guess we may be getting it today. I had been meaning to watch the video, and now I am duly impressed!! What a great game, really cool mechanics, and it looks really fun! I have heard it was a must have, and now I see why! Great job on the video. I think it will re help, as there’s a lot going on in the game. But it definitely looks manageable.

One of my favs too!
The colors were indeed better in the old version, but the layout of the new boards are actually great in this one. I just wish the city in the background was faded. One thing I love though, is that the look of the each building gives you a hint about its ability. The expansions are also good and easy to add (except shields maybe).
Yeah, certainly different opinions on the presentation of the new edition to be sure.
This game, Stone Age, Wingspan and Everdell are on a regular rotation in our game nights

i've been fighting the reskin so hard, because after the blandness of the original, it just looks so garish... like a clown threw up in a kaleidoscope, right in the middle of astronaut training. But i've been playing the BGA version this week (with artwork based on this update) and... i don't hate it? i may just update my copy after all. Thanks for the video, Rodney!

Hello, a question about an expansion tile: the "white castle" says to immediately perform an action with the value of the white die. Will this action be possible only when the “white castle” tile is placed or every time the white die is rolled? Thank you

I have a question: At the end of the video, how many times/takes did you have to twirl the top of the box before you were able to do it smoothly and place it right side up on the bottom half?

Thank you for your awesome and clear explanations. I'm very new to this hobby and just purchased this game at a local toy store. I realize my version must be an older version because this version only contains the board where you show it is for 4 players (where you flip it to the other side. Mine does not have another side for 2 players). Will this version of the board still be good for 2 players? Thank you.
It’s hard to say, as I’m not sure what version you have. I’m pretty sure all versions of this game has boards for 2 players. You might need to check your versions rule book to see if it has any special notes about that.

Just to clarify, at 21:46 there was a building token in the 6 depot still on the board when you refilled it with tokens. Was that meant to be cleared, but mistakenly left on?

I have a question about the bridge. I noticed that the bridge only has 7 spots on it. If a player were to advance on the bridge, but was already on the 7th spot, what happens? Also, if 2 or more players were on the last spot of the bridge, and one of them has to advance (like the player whose piece is on the bottom of the stack), what happens, and who would be the new first player?
In fact, could any player in general go past the 7th spot, since I did notice that the board themselves only have 6 ship spots, and the ships are the ones that let you move your piece on that track?
You only advance on the bridge when you place a ship piece. The maps have spaces for 6 possible ship pieces.
The game(play) is so amazing I couldn't help but watch this from start to finish. Another thing I can't help myself doing is go on a short rant about the Anniversary edition. Yes, it's more colorful overall than the original version that has gotten a lot of heat for being so bland looking, but somehow the new version ended up way too saturated and busy, imo. And there's a blurriness to many of the tiles that is just mindboggling. The bonus tiles for example - were they printed at like 30 dpi??? I don't get it. Such a headscratcher.
Anyways, amazing game that regardless of how it looks collects a little bit of all of the classic Euro mechanics in one of the most fun packages out there.
The art on this game has always been a point of some discussion!
Having owned and played both versions, I’d have to say that neither edition is definitively better. There are certain things that the new version does much better than the old version, and vice versa. I thought I would hate the brightness of the new edition, but it’s actually quite nice in person. I do miss the chickens, though.
I think in "beginning a new phase" 21:47 you forgot to clean up the building in depot 6.

Nope, wasn't aware this was coming to BGA. I've actually had this one in the works for about a year, but was having trouble finding an opening.

I would say there's indirect player interaction (considering how what you take affects other players, or might limit their options). But no direct interaction (stealing another player's pieces, etc).
wait, a dutchie? is that new for this new edition? brings a whole new meaning to "Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side" :) I'm glad i have the older, more subdued art version though. The colors are a bit aggressive on the new version. CoB is one of my all time favorite games. It has that magic of making you feel really clever when you can pull off a big combo turn, which always feels good!
