What is the best UPS for the price that I can get and use a Car battery in it ? I would like to get about 1 hour of work time till the battery goes low.
The traditional lead-acid car batteries like the one shown here emit toxic gasses as they charge and should not be kept inside. These gasses can also start a fire / explode if in contact with a spark or flame. If you really need this, buy a car battery that doesn't off-gas, like an AGM battery. Also, a deep cycle AGM marine battery would be best suited for this application.
Giving it high amperage will make it off-gas, the 700mA (0.7A) is like having a trickle charger on the battery, plus float charging is required to prevent sulphating. When drained deeply, I use my 8A DuraLast charger then let the APC finish it.
@@katkatthecat Be it as it may, he used the wrong type of battery. Anything kept indoors requires a SEALED battery, like an AGM type. This is why every UPS has a sealed battery inside of it right from the factory. Mistakes and defects happen and they can sometimes be fatal, so why take a chance just to save $30?
But you don't need that thick of wires to connect to the battery. This inverter is not going to pull a lot of Amps. One cable is enough no matter what big a battery you are going to hook up to this. Believe me.
You have taken out two 12 V batteries which were in series making it 24 V, the car battery you have added is also of 24 V? or no matter you can provide 12 V or 24 V ?
I have a UPS that gives DC 12V, 1.2A to it's UPS battery. How do I make it DC 12V 3A,so that I can charge my 35Ah car-battery with it? Is there any circuit that I can add to the "wires that were going into the UPS battery", and achieve my objective(12V, 3A)? I don't want to separate the transformer from UPS circuit, since doing that will spoil the UPS. After charging the car-battery, I plan to remove this additional circuit and put the UPS back to it's original use (12V, 1.2A).
Ok, big battery is added and it will work. But how long that 7AH circute board/ of UPS will take to Recharge car battery like 80AH, 100AH, 150AH ? 10 days or 15 ?
I guess..... now one more idea can be implemented I have 2 useless UPS sets of 600VA I guess we can use both of them for charging of single set of battery but only one for consumption. So it will reduce charging time. So while charging we need to put on both of them for parallel charging.
Buy a UPS which has an "Anderson" connector at rear for external battery. I have 1000watt APC external run unit with two 12 volt 120amp hour deep discharge batteries connected in series for 24 volt input. runs everything!
Why bother with UPS with internal battery when there were UPSs with external connection in 2016? I bought a Luxeon 12v UPS with sinus and connected a car battery. All went good till 2019 when my 60Ah Energizer battery lost 50-70% of it's capacity... So car battery is not a good option. Now I'm looking for other battery types, which is able to work with such UPS and remain their capacity longer. LiOn is not an option since it has wrong high charge level (4.2*3 is much lower then UPS will try to charge SLA battery - 13.6v).
Hey, I'm not going to judge a proper video. THANK YOU FOR THE CONTENT! I don't understand the dislikes. Quick Good & Fast are rare combinations. This a 3/3 Engineering Standards met. Please forgive me for asking, How healthy are the Capacitors? and the Internals. My NORMAL UPS battery dies every 4.5 to 5.8 months.. I wonder is it the batteries? OR is it the internals of my UPS... Do I need additional filters on my main. It's like I can hear the A/C unit trying to kill my UPS. Bad house wiring I know... But how long do the internals of the UPS last. BTW Be careful those Capacitors hold VERY powerful charges. Be nice to place those capacitors with quick charge/discharge like Lithium Ion but that is Another battery cost... Video One English. What is your opinion?
Here in India, most UPS have poor quality batteries, so they won't last long and will give poor back up. Batteries in UPS, deteriorate at a high speed, once they start Being used. This is a trade secret. Same is true for mobile phone batteries.
I think this arrangement is good. Well done, except perhaps that you didn't solder too there in the beginning. I would have done that. But still, thumbs up from me 👍
I used to set this one for a year. Works great but not for long time and dont forget to close ups when you go out. If you have a blackout it will burn your house.

Those grey cables are thicker than the one you took off from the ups battery. Should i use the same gauge cable or its ok to connect them on thicker ones?

great tutorial, i followed it today, but i hit a big wall unfortunately because i found that my UPS has its two batteries connected in series not in parallel like in ur UPS so the car battery i bought today(12v) didnt power my UPS which needs 24v, im thinking about getting a dc-dc boost converter which can increase the voltage from 12 to 24v, what do u think about that? do u have any other solution idea ? thank you
have fun with all that hydrogen gas ... one spark, and BOOOM goes your computer room ... 4% is the magic ignition number... have fun, stay safe. Oh, and yeah, SOLDER yo shit !
my ups shuts itself off after 30 minutes no matter how big my battery capacity is. guess its better to get a ups that has factory external battery support
Rather than fucking up the unit (At that point may as well cut off the plastic housing for the battery), I just got a couple pieces of mains wiring, black and brown, stripped twisted and tinned 1 cm on one end, which goes into one side of the spade plugs, holding on by friction, and the other end striped a bit more and wrapped in a ring around the battery terminals, tinned also at the point the ring closes to avoid it unwrapping.
As long as you use sturdy molybdenum-steel coat-hangers and some chewing gum, it should work. Don't be alarmed if the coat-hangers start to glow red. This is always normal for neophytes. It is just part of the learning curve.
Hey - Why don't you run your motorcycle on the UPS? All you need is a very long extension cord! Just make sure it doesn't accidentally wrap around your neck - or you will end up like Isadora Duncan.
Artiphilia it is working fine in my house and in my office... Be sure that the UPS has a good cooling system and try to test if it is becoming hot or not... My UPS doesn't go hot. And I put it outside the house not inside. It is working fine with me for about three years now.

Your battery is dead or at the brink of dying. so it cant hold a charge as it used to when it was new. even after being fully charge the charge capacity has dropped due to its age. Normally your UPS would show "replace battery" light if it has one
Больше 10 лет так делаю, если надо увеличить время работы UPS, для более быстрого заряда батареи можно подключить зарядное устройство через диод к батарее.
This video very bad 1- Ups are used for short time of work and not for long time of work 2 - Charger Ups is weak and can not be used as large batteries and you must change cooling system in Ups 3 - Ups output is not pure sine wave 4 - Use the inverter better than the Ups
1,2- It depends on your UPS's internals. The biggest risk factor is heat building up over extended use (as you mentioned in your 2nd point). If your UPS doesn't have an internal active cooling system, just hook up a 12v fan to one of the batteries and stick it inside. 3- Again, depends on the UPS, but yes, most UPS-s have a simulated sine wave output. But, most modern electronics (especially a computer's PSU) can easily account for that and adapt at a moment's notice without interruption. 4- A bigger, external stand-alone inverter IS better than a UPS, but does not immediately switch over to the battery when mains' power is lost (the reason most people get a UPS). You could hook it up WITH a UPS together, but at that point, you're still buying a UPS lol
This video was in my RUclips recommended page... Many times, and you can see this on the UPS app, for your computer; the highest power draw in the UPS, is the dc-to-ac convertor in the UPS. Us a car charger against a lithium car battery, and use the battery to power only 12-volt devices, for emergency power needs. Losses are now near zero, and the Lithium car battery will not sag voltage during its discharge cycle. This is a secret, don’t tell anybody...

And if it can be charged with that ups curcit then can I connect that 70 ah battery with the ups while using my PC Or should I recharge the 70 ah battery previously? Waiting for your valuable reply. Thanks a lot for the creative video.
When discharged, the battery will require lotsa power to bring itself back up to snuff. Your UPS will not be able to do this. *Ever heard of plug and NO play?* When the house power is finally restored, you had better QUICKLY disconnect the car battery from the UPS and recharge it with a standard car battery recharger. OH! Of course, make sure your computer and router stuff is disconnected also! Otherwise your UPS will soon fail. It is not meant to recharge big car batteries. MAKE SURE all your connections are connected/disconnected properly or... HEY- why don't you just buy the recommended battery for the UPS?
Experience the joy of battery fumes in your home TODAY! As an added bonus, you'll have the peace of mind in knowing you also have 18lbs of lead and a gallon of sulfuric acid close by. DO NOT DO THIS! Aside from shoddy work, this thing is a hazard for a myriad of reasons to include the fumes as mentioned. While rare, any fault that may develop in the battery compounded by unusual charging and load can produce hydrogen sulfide, which is lethal in even small doses in brief exposures and has killed people
Phooey! No problem! When bad stuff starts to happen, just dump 300 lb of Baking Soda on the whole mess! That's what I always do! It's recommended by Martha Stewart AND Bob Vila!
Hi I'm using my car battery with computer UPS and every one minute ups turns off. Could you please help me know why it is happening like this. Any any suggestions
no because thees cheap and even expensive ups arent made to handle the load for more than what the orginal battery size can allow so it will just overheat youd have to changde the transistors and maybe even the trafo...
@@navibean1635 Nope those are 12v batteries each, 2 of them will make it 24v and yes they are connected in series since 1000 VA UPS requires 24v batteries whereas 600 VA UPS requires a single 12v battery.
You are connecting copper to aluminum, aren't you forgetting the gel to prevent oxidation? without that is a fire hazard.... Also, with that setup you left the original ends on there, you could reinsert the original battery and run in parallel. every little bit helps. :)
No. Not Every little bit helps. the problem with that is an imbalance between the batteries not pushing power at the same rate. Every battery that works in battery Bank has to work at near the same rate and capacity. Hence why batteries in a bank are all replaced at the same time.
An UPS battery is designed to be drained empty and recharged. A car battery is not and should not be used for more than 20% of its capacity. So, using a car battery for an UPS is far from ideal and may quickly age the battery.
Actually, most UPS systems use wet cell lead acid batteries, which are the same as what car batteries are. The UPS batteries are not designed to actually run for extended periods of time. They're designed to get you through short power outages or to give you a few minutes to get your computer system shut down properly. It's just as bad to let standard UPS batteries completely drain as it is for a car battery. There are some very high-end UPS systems that are used in mission-critical applications that have deep-cycle batteries that won't suffer damage if completely drained. The UPS in this video (and any UPS you get from a consumer electronics store) will be standard lead-acid wet-cell batteries.
That's not true. The SLA batteries in UPSes are NOT deep cycle batteries at all. They are just as vulnerable as car batteries. That's why the circuitry in UPSes will SHUT OFF and drop the load when the battery voltage falls to 10V. The real problem is that these low end UPSes don't have fans and depend on the low power of their batteries to limit runtime. Use a huge external battery and the electronics will get hot, possibly starting a fire. Your house costs far more than a decent UPS with external battery connectors.
it will work 100% ryt? I hope there won't be any issues? please do reply me if its not safe or safe .Thank you .I'm gonna try this for sure .great idea :-)
I'm going to look inside my CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD and see if this battery upgrade/hack can be done with it. It already has a fan on the inverter so there's that...
I did this recently with a 650VAh UPS I was using for almost a year (warrenty expired) and a new 65Ah battery. It had a 7Ah which discharges under small load very fast. Now I can run two LED lamps + Box fan in addition to a PC while chargina a phone for like 1 hour. Only problem is the box fan makes a weird noise under square wave. But make sure to check DC and AC voltages battery and out. My new battery goes to like 14V DC - but the UPS output is steady 230V AC This battery has an analog status signal. They have put a chemical that turns Green when charged, White when discharged and Red when dry (needs water).
I have ever do it exactly like that,,, I haven't known yet if it can charge the battery but All I know it has very big powere when it is charging I got elctrocuted by big current.

this will not last.SMF ( small internal battery systems) battery system inverters are designed for 5 to 10 minute backups, hence small heatsinks and no fans.If you increase the battery capasity from say 7Ah to 100ah, ups will theoretically run for 100Minutes+ but what about the heat produced? The transformer, mosfets surely will run out of thermal specs. And what about the charger which was designed for 7ah battery? 0.7amp charger for 100 ah car battery? It wil take about 30 days to charge the battery.
Hydrogen gas is only going to vent out of a lead-acid battery if it's being overcharged. Most, if not all, UPS charging systems will cut off once the battery reaches a certain voltage and will continue "float charging" it to maintain it.
To save cost, some low cost UPS are using autotransformer configuration for charging/ stepping up voltage. In such UPS there is a risk of shock hazard if we touch battery terminal as the isolation is not done. They make inverter body out of plastic and prevents accidental touch of battery terminal. Idea is good, charging solution can even be using a solar charger. I agree that automotive battery is not designed for UPS/ inverter usage
@@dacianchronolog4104 Defining comment Dacian... well done! It's a very simple 'hack' not an electrical engineers report up for pseudo-expert dissection.
Car batteries are terrible at storing energy, only really good for high currents, AGM are far far superior. I'd also not remove the original, instead add the car battery [or AGM] to the original.
Thing is, I already have the car battery (my father replaced the one on his car because it would not start, I took the old one and connected it to a desulfator and charger for a couple weeks). Meanwhile the paltry "5A" one in my UPS is several years old and probably isn't able to deliver even 1A. Meanwhile the car battery is rated "235A", and even if at 1/5 that capacity, that is an order of magnitude greater than what it shipped with.
These devices are designed to run for short amount of time. . Extending the run time will generate heat not anticipated by the designers. You have just created a possible fire hazard.
This is where a hammer comes in habdy. Smash the timer with the hammer! And then, using sturdy molybdenum steel coat hangers, wire everything properly. And the computer will be OK, even when those coat hangers are glowing red hot! And forget about "soldering irons". Those are for wimps!
it charges a car battery in 3 to 5 days... usually it can charge a 5ah battery in 4-5 hours. If you use a 50ah battery the charging time will be 10x times more. 40-50 hours. If you use a 100ah car battery it takes min. 3.5 days or more.
It is dangerous. If it didn't burn for the video maker, it could burn for you. So be very careful if you don't have any knowledge about electricity. Except you wanna take the risk setting fire to your house.

Mistakes and defects happen and they can sometimes be fatal, so why take a chance just to save $30?
how much Amp that battery have what kinda battery are you using
But you don't need that thick of wires to connect to the battery. This inverter is not going to pull a lot of Amps.
One cable is enough no matter what big a battery you are going to hook up to this. Believe me.

In how many hours will the battery charge from UPS? If you have a separate battery charger?
Can i make single (phase) wire connections from UPS just like inverter making ground common for UPS input and output?
Please reply.
Abhimanyu Altekar three days
Abhimanyu Altekar three days for 80 ah
I guess..... now one more idea can be implemented
I have 2 useless UPS sets of 600VA
I guess we can use both of them for charging of single set of battery but only one for consumption. So it will reduce charging time.
So while charging we need to put on both of them for parallel charging.
Can I charge my 12v 3ah battery with 12v 6ah ups?
Buy a UPS which has an "Anderson" connector at rear for external battery. I have 1000watt APC external run unit with two 12 volt 120amp hour deep discharge batteries connected in series for 24 volt input. runs everything!
Which UPS model(s) would you recommend?
Why bother with UPS with internal battery when there were UPSs with external connection in 2016? I bought a Luxeon 12v UPS with sinus and connected a car battery. All went good till 2019 when my 60Ah Energizer battery lost 50-70% of it's capacity... So car battery is not a good option. Now I'm looking for other battery types, which is able to work with such UPS and remain their capacity longer. LiOn is not an option since it has wrong high charge level (4.2*3 is much lower then UPS will try to charge SLA battery - 13.6v).

Here in India, most UPS have poor quality batteries, so they won't last long and will give poor back up.
Batteries in UPS, deteriorate at a high speed, once they start

This is a trade secret.
Same is true for mobile phone batteries.

Solder is for wimps! I generally use chewing gum and a bit of Scotch tape.
my ups shuts itself off after 30 minutes no matter how big my battery capacity is. guess its better to get a ups that has factory external battery support
really good idea but the ups was not deigned to support long times of drain, it doesnt have a big heatsink, just a little piece of aluminum.
Rather than fucking up the unit (At that point may as well cut off the plastic housing for the battery), I just got a couple pieces of mains wiring, black and brown, stripped twisted and tinned 1 cm on one end, which goes into one side of the spade plugs, holding on by friction, and the other end striped a bit more and wrapped in a ring around the battery terminals, tinned also at the point the ring closes to avoid it unwrapping.
standard AC light gauge cable being used for high amperage DC good job on making a heating element
As long as you use sturdy molybdenum-steel coat-hangers and some chewing gum, it should work.
Don't be alarmed if the coat-hangers start to glow red. This is always normal for neophytes. It is just part of the learning curve.

Your battery is dead or at the brink of dying. so it cant hold a charge as it used to when it was new. even after being fully charge the charge capacity has dropped due to its age.
Normally your UPS would show "replace battery" light if it has one

Yes, but you should only use it under half the rated load of the UPS. For "600W" UPS, that should be under 250W.
Больше 10 лет так делаю, если надо увеличить время работы UPS, для более быстрого заряда батареи можно подключить зарядное устройство через диод к батарее.

Hi
Good
I can use 100ah battery the UPS can change it
This video very bad
1- Ups are used for short time of work and not for long time of work
2 - Charger Ups is weak and can not be used as large batteries and you must change cooling system in Ups
3 - Ups output is not pure sine wave
4 - Use the inverter better than the Ups
This is a secret, don’t tell anybody...
if car batery conect to the ups as AC power suplier how about it.i tring to conect car battery to ups but car batery not charged after finished the power

Waiting for your valuable reply.
Thanks a lot for the creative video.
When discharged, the battery will require lotsa power to bring itself back up to snuff. Your UPS will not be able to do this.
*Ever heard of plug and NO play?*
When the house power is finally restored, you had better QUICKLY disconnect the car battery from the UPS and recharge it with a standard car battery recharger.
Hi
I'm using my car battery with computer UPS and every one minute ups turns off. Could you please help me know why it is happening like this. Any any suggestions
May be your UPS requires 24 volts (2 batteries) instead of 12 volts.
no because thees cheap and even expensive ups arent made to handle the load for more than what the orginal battery size can allow so it will just overheat youd have to changde the transistors and maybe even the trafo...
Hello .
Let me ask you something please !
Your UPS have 2 batterys but after you change it you put only 1 car battery !
No need again 2 ?
Thank you !
The two batteries in a UPS are usually two 6-volt batteries, wired in series - so the charger sees them as one 12-volt battery.
@@navibean1635 Nope those are 12v batteries each, 2 of them will make it 24v and yes they are connected in series since 1000 VA UPS requires 24v batteries whereas 600 VA UPS requires a single 12v battery.
Copy that. I used to replace the batteries on some APC 1400. They are two 12v batteries connected in series, with a fuse between two batteries.
Hence why batteries in a bank are all replaced at the same time.
what is the flow of ampere from computer ups while charging the battery.

@@rcxb1 or you could hook up a cheap 12v fan and stick it inside, if your UPS does not have its own active cooling system.

the car battery you use is 24volts or 12volts? can i use 24volts?
NO,unless it came with a 24 V. battery.
Sure! But 120 volts is faster! Try 240 volts! Really fast.
Would you like AC? Or DC? Actually AC/DC is best. Lots of heavy metal!
My new battery goes to like 14V DC - but the UPS output is steady 230V AC
This battery has an analog status signal. They have put a chemical that turns Green when charged, White when discharged and Red when dry (needs water).

Exactly what RUclips was 'made' for!
?? Y not just set a Car Batt. and sine-wave inverter and Batt. maintainer close by. Mount all 3 things on a small dolly. Try that!
this will not last.SMF ( small internal battery systems) battery system inverters are designed for 5 to 10 minute backups, hence small heatsinks and no fans.If you increase the battery capasity from say 7Ah to 100ah, ups will theoretically run for 100Minutes+ but what about the heat produced? The transformer, mosfets surely will run out of thermal specs. And what about the charger which was designed for 7ah battery? 0.7amp charger for 100 ah car battery? It wil take about 30 days to charge the battery.
Have you thought about the hydrogen gas that comes from the car battery
Did you even notice that it was outside?
Hydrogen gas is only going to vent out of a lead-acid battery if it's being overcharged. Most, if not all, UPS charging systems will cut off once the battery reaches a certain voltage and will continue "float charging" it to maintain it.
To save cost, some low cost UPS are using autotransformer configuration for charging/ stepping up voltage. In such UPS there is a risk of shock hazard if we touch battery terminal as the isolation is not done. They make inverter body out of plastic and prevents accidental touch of battery terminal. Idea is good, charging solution can even be using a solar charger. I agree that automotive battery is not designed for UPS/ inverter usage
can i use that ups battery as power backup?

Car batteries are terrible at storing energy, only really good for high currents, AGM are far far superior. I'd also not remove the original, instead add the car battery [or AGM] to the original.
"Absorbed Glass Mat" batteries? Interesting!
Problem is my UPS has a built in timer . . and cuts off in 15-mins NO MATTER WHAT !
I tried before but the problem is that the car battery will not recharge by the UPS. just one way only.
it charges a car battery in 3 to 5 days... usually it can charge a 5ah battery in 4-5 hours. If you use a 50ah battery the charging time will be 10x times more. 40-50 hours. If you use a 100ah car battery it takes min. 3.5 days or more.
