    I'd say the #1 way to be successful in podcasting is find someone to do it with who is equally passionate and ask them to join in. An accountibilibuddy who is going through the same thing is an amazing resource whenever taking on anything.
    My first reaction when reading your video title was "Because it ends up feeling like work..." and you explained that well. Sharing all that work with someone can reduce the drag and increase the motivation and inspiration.

    Hi @Tom Buck, I’ve just opened a podcast studio space after producing podcasts for various clients on location. It’s been a dream of mine which is now materialising into reality. Watching your videos and listening to your podcast on apple has really helped me - especially with confirmation bias on certain things which I was sometimes unsure about. Thanks Tom. Keep it up.

    @Tom Buck, you are a gem. I keep coming back to your channel because you consistently strike a great balance between entertainment and really valuable insights, reviews and practical information. I admire your ability to make videos that seem like you were just "suddenly inspired" to call up a friend to tell them something you're excited about but that are also professional, polished, and possessed of a golden ratio of useful tips and insights delivered per minute spent watching. I just had to comment and say "thank for being you and doing what you do!" - James Gilchrist (Awen Music, Share the Light Productions, Lighthouse L&D Consulting)

    I started a podcast with my friends in November and we did miss two weeks cause I was sick but we got back on track. I find myself finding the podcast a bit of a chore as I'm the ONLY editor at the moment while also working as an editor for an agency. But the second I step back into the podcast room I love it again epically after an episode that we're all proud of. We have this idea from moving out of the cramp podcast room we're in to full on studio for a "season two" 😉

    SEASONS!!!! Wow! Excellent idea!!! I took a break a year ago around 10 episodes, to take a step back and assess my workflow with my family, a pastor, and my start-up RUclips channel. That break was needed, but knowing the personal investment of my time to manage the workflow makes it hard to start it back up with an “open-ended” schedule. Thanks Tom! For the first time in months, my wheels in my brain are spinning regarding my podcast. Whether those wheels my brain are “fit for service” is an entirely different matter all-together! 😂🤣

    One of my friends and I started our industry's first podcast in 2005. We approached it more like a Morning Drive Radio Show so the conversation was very free-flowing, and it made it easier to produce because we didn't have to edit (much). It went well and we ran for 78 episodes through 2008.
    I didn't start listening to The Enthusiasm Project until last season and when that ended, I was thinking "it's gonna be a long time before next season" - but it went by quickly. Thanks for not spacing your seasons like BBC with Doctor Who!

    Great Advice! I really wish I could think of a way to take a break. It’s not because I’m overflowing with ideas by any means, it’s more something inside me saying the week isn’t complete if an episode isn’t out by Tuesday!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад +1

      I definitely get that. I started by only taking a one week break, and then eventually two, and now I can "comfortably" do 4-6 weeks without worrying too much.
      The idea of taking a break from RUclips though? Anxiety-inducing!

  • @RadioCamp

    I've been involved in some podcast productions and everything you say here is true! It also holds for radio -- we just finished a 17+ year run of 6.4K shows, totaling 26K hours of programming, serving 200+ public radio stations, all out of a home studio. The key is to pace yourself, develop a small team to help keep things moving forward, and most importantly, schedule-in downtime in the form of good reruns or, as Tom suggested, season breaks. Good luck everyone, and have fun!

    I noticed that you found a way to mount the Lewitt LCT 240 on your Rode boom arm after your last video. It sounds great.
    I like your pointers for a sustainable podcast. I’ve been working on ideas for mine. After watching this I’ll see if I have enough ideas for a first season of 10 - 12 episodes so that I can break through the barrier of seven.
    I want you to know that out of the many on RUclips that cover similar topics in my opinion you stand out among the crowd. You’re a great teacher, something I truly appreciate because I spent over 36 years in the elementary classroom and a university computer lab teaching teachers. More importantly you know your “stuff” and are very honest in your presentation. I greatly appreciate your commitment to helping others. Thank you.
    B&H has the white microphone with the white shock mount, foam wind screen and the magnetic pop filter, exactly the setup you have, available on a special order for $169 including free shipping. I thought I’d add this here in case anyone’s interested.

    Super helpful. I find that 12 has become my limit to my seasons. Trying to get 5 or 6 ahead of the season launch helps me as the solo producer. I also create all of the music for my show so... that's time-consuming. Coming up with impactful episodes is my biggest challenge. Perfectionism... Thinking that each episode needs to be War and Peace. LOL.

      I'm honestly not the most knowledgable person when it comes to hubs/docks, but the Satechi MacBook docks are pretty good. Hi Tom,
    Great content as always :) And these reasons are sooo true!
    What do you hold the RCPII on?
    And where can you get such colored cables? :D (preferably in Europe)
    I might have an idea for a topic that is relatively rarely explored. "How to talk nicely into the microphone" - and here I'm thinking mainly about how to breathe, or if the microphone is so good (SM7B for example) that it can be heard even at a distance, how to get rid of it quickly in post-production. Do you have any tricks for that?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад

      I've got my RCP on a long VESA arm that I found on Amazon (any VESA mount should work just fine). The colored cables are also usually from Amazon, either from a brand called Dremake or Grindhouse. The quality is ok overall, but they're super affordable.

    I do enjoy a good "Internet Broadcast"! It was first supposed to be a NetCast but Apple got their hooks in it first and changed Net to Pod, because you know the iPod thing was cool! Another fun fact about Podcasts is the original idea came from 2004 with Adam Curry from MTV and Dave Winer. Side note, Adam Curry still put's out 2 podcasts a week and uses the value for value model. Which is the best way to get paid as you don't have to worry what you say on the podcast.

    The stat comes from Todd Cochran from Blubrry. He said it at a Podcamp Ohio back when there was a Bush in the White House (i.e. a long time ago). Every now and then I'll ask if that stat has changed, and it's been pretty consistent.

    This Monday I will be uploading my 21st episode of The Real Demons of Pop Culture and I feel like the show is just getting its legs. I have so much more to say. I do an episode every 2 weeks. I have been thinking about ending the season on 21 but here are my concerns and wondering what you think. If I take a month or so off I am afraid I may lose traction and listeners. Another question I have is do you record the next season while on the break so you have the season recorded before starting up the new season? Does taking a break differ for you since you are always on RUclips and you don't worry about taking a break on your podcast? Since I post every two weeks I wonder if having seasons is even necessary. Off topic, did you change the room around? I love the lighting on the wall where the guitars are.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад

      Congrats on 21!
      Truthfully, there's a chance you could lose some traction by taking a break, but I don't think it'll be too hard to get it back. What I've seen some people do is re-upload some of their favorite episodes as "best of" during breaks.
      I usually record one or two episodes during my breaks, but as much as possible I try and actually take the time off. It's all about what works for you!
      And yes! I did rearrange a bit to add some more organization 👍

    Most people who podcast suck at it to be honest. They have a tendency to over talk and if they have friends as an extra presenter they often just talk over each other and get lost on tangents instead of getting back to the subject quicker. Some of the big podcasts do that as well and it is often incredibly annoying. Another thing is people don't know how to interview guests very well and seldom are able to keep a conversation or questions going, I sometimes listen to a podcast on selling by a guy who sold a business and he has intriguing guests on but he often lets his ego get in the way and will make everything about him and his sale of his business. It is also a ton of work and when you are starting you are literally talking to the void as it can take years to get traction and a lot of people don't want to put in that effort.
