I moved from a Scarlett Solo to a Rodecaster Pro 2 and csn confirm there's a noticeable delay on the monitoring, but it's still very small -- maybe 30ms or so. It's enough to create a small echo effect but not so long as to make it harder to talk (for anyone not aware, try talking while listening to yourself at a 1 second delay and you'll see what I mean). I'm pretty sure it's like this because it runs the processing before you hear it, whereas the zero delay ones just feed the raw mic signal back into your ears. I'd say it's well worth the tradeoff, in my case specifically it lets me know right away if I've fallen out of the noise gate. And if you're doing more advanced processing, it lets you much more quickly adjust how it turns out.
Interesting. You're not the first person I've heard say this. I haven't noticed anything but I'm really starting to think that I'm just less sensitive to it for whatever reason, because so many others have mentioned it.
great vid, one thing i would like to pass along for potential people wondering, while the jack in the front bottom is a trrs and can be used for headphones etc it is actually a trrs input meaning when people try to use it as an output you may experience diminished quality of sound if you are trying to plug a mic or potentially use the line to make phone calls. not saying that you can't make it work as an output but just be aware it's not natively an out so it may behave differently
Your studio and color theme is maybe the most beautiful I have ever seen on YT. Really pleasing to the eye just to watch.. as well as for the ear to listen of course.. Well done!
Exactly what i thought. The multicolor rode cable and accents are really helping a lot as well… Also it’s really unique and unlike any other set I’ve seen so far on RUclips. Well done sir!
Not sure if you're aware, but TRS means tip-ring-sleeve. Consequently, TRRS means tip-ring-ring-sleeve. So instead of saying 2 R's means 3 black lines, it's just 2R means 2 rings.
Hi, I have just bought this, after putting it in the cart a few times. I already have the Nt1a and the SM7B. This video has been perfect information. Thank you so much.
I dunno what's better, the content or the puns.. Either way, always an enjoyable and educational watch! I've recently gotten a RCP 2 and I am really enjoying it. I searched for many videos and articles about the device and the Duo, and between the vast amount of videos I watched I ended up watching Tom's the most. Very fun and educational content that's easy to digest. I apprectiate your hard work!
Thanks! They're both awesome, and I'm really happy there are not actual performance differences between them. They're identical where it counts the most 👍
This is one of our future options for podcasting. We want something easy to use. We can also put a MicroSD, so we don't need a computer or a tablet for recording.
Honestly I'm so glad that I've held out on the Rodecasters! This is a better fit for me and the content I do. I've been wanting to upgrade from the Focusrite 8i6 for some time and this seems perfect! Slight bummer about recording music however it's a small sacrifice but I don't mind doing the mixing via software and besides I don't do much music these days. Appreciate the review Tom, you are one of the few I trust when it comes to audio gear.
2:53 I use the RP2 for music production, and I use three inputs for myself -vox, internally mic’d acoustic guitar, and mic’d foot percussion[I wish it had 6 XLR ins when I’m not solo]. I love it!
I have both the RCP2 and the Duo. For me, as a Solo Content Creator, i feel like getting the Duo is the best way to go for solo or duo content creators. The RCP2 was purchased because Rode said it was made with musicians in mind, and i agree with you there. Unfortunately, they haven't done anything at all for the musicians and if Rode says that you can use it with a DAW on a PC well, you can also use a FocusRight Scarlett interface and plug that into a DAW and a lower price. Ill admit that i am waiting for Rode to unlock Sequence recording, they already told me since it runs on Linux it can definitely do Sequence recording. But again for solo creators just needing some solid premium sounding audio, i would stick to the duo.
I'm kind of baffled by the lack of musician updates. I know Rode doesn't have the library of virtual modeling that Boss/Roland does, but I feel like they could add in something basic, or at least some nifty recording options or a simple chromatic tuner. 🤷🏻♂️ I've noticed that they haven't been promoting the music functionality as much lately, so maybe they quietly decided to drop it?
Yep! My Duo now lives on my "work" desk and the Pro 2 is saved for videos/projects/etc. It's very nice to have the extra space without losing any of the power.
My biggest issue with both Duo and RCP2 is the lack of stereo line-in. RCP2 allows to chain to channels to get one stereo but it does not have front headphones output, and you have to sacrifice two mic channels to get line-in. On Duo it's even worse as there are only two channels so if you want stereo line-in the only option for a mic is Bluetooth or a headset (so only mono input channel). I would love to upgrade but it seems that ironically the Rodecaster Pro 1 offers the best versatility in terms of inputs. Not everything is a phone or computer to use USB there are amplifiers, dj controllers, and lots of equipment that still use analog as a way to pass sound. In most cases, you don't need two USB ports. It was said that this is for gamers but good look connecting your retro gaming console via USB. Unless they offer some kind of dongle to switch one USB to analog or at least Toslink (then you can adapt to analog via converters) both Duo and Pro 2 are no go for me and pretty much anyone who needs more than two mics and line-in.
Thanks! I know there are a lot of really knowledgeable folks out there, but I was hoping to try and contextualize it a bit since it can be tough to decide which to buy.
The difference in camera fed audio quality you may be perceiving could be due to consumer cameras typically record audio at 16-bit and the Rodecaster at 24-bit. The camera (Canon R5 for example) will always downsample any incoming audio source to its native 16-bit recording, regardless, even if feeding it a 32-bit signal.
Happy to see you’re loving this. I was heartbroken by recent Rode purchases. I had given RCP2 a shot but returned it because the front plate wasn’t glued down properly and Amazon charged me a restocking fee - unreal! Then, I picked up the Duo and absolutely adored it … except I continued to get random clicks and pops in the recording despite multiple channels, cords, mics tried. I thought it was an issue with the electric in my home so I bought a power conditioner and the problem persisted. I eventually returned the Duo as well because of those pops and clicks in both USB and SD card recording. And those issues aren’t present in my Mixcast. Ended up losing quite a bit of money trying both out 🙃 I hope those were just issues I experienced and not some bigger problem. Btw hope that 2-week break of yours really recharged the batteries for you!
Buyer beware…Rodecaster products made in Australia look the deal..lots of nice lit up pads. A bit like certain Chinese or Indian motor vehicles …that look good , full of enticing gear …but regularly break.? I bought a gigcaster 5 . And for a guitar player , vocalist ..it is brilliant. Hopefully the quality control issues of rodecaster products will improve But what I have read and heard …there are quite a few lemons amongst the oranges.
I enjoy my original Rodecaster a lot. I have no urgency to upgrade so I will probably do it next summer as I've already gotten three years out of the original one. I just wanted to make a comment on Amazon. Rode specifically said on their website when I bought the original not to get their product from Amazon. They had several recommended sites to order from and I chose one. I've never had any issues with my device and it's been the single best piece of tech I have ever purchased in my life! I was driving an hour to record my podcast in a radio studio and now I do it all at home (thanks in part to the pandemic) and I'm thankful for that small silver lining. It appeared to me last time I was on the road website that you can order directly from them now instead of an American retailer so I'm not sure which would be better but I just wanted to counter what appears to be a belief that because it came from Australia it was a problem. Everything I know of Rode seems to indicate that they have a high commitment to quality. I know that Tom himself was a little worried about possible lapses in quality because of the sheer amount of new devices that Rode announced at once, but he seems to be fairly convinced that the quality remains high. I'm sorry for this novel Tom but I'm thankful for the work you do in the entertaining videos that we get to watch! :) By the way, if the duo has the same specs technically I will probably get that.
In my WFH setup I've been using a Yeti X that I run thru a USB switcher to change it between my work laptop and personal gaming machine. Laptop audio going from the line out on the docking station into a pair of ins on my Scarlett 8i6 to pump that thru my monitors. I've wanted to upgrade to an XLR mic for some time but nothing has been able to handle the audio routing challenge until I saw the Rodecaster Pro II and now this. When I saw he The footprint on this seems WAY more reasonable and worth the price given the functionality. Appreciate these reviews.
I guess the question is, for the price difference would you go for the pro 2 to alleviate that worry of outgrowing the duo ? You’re literally my buying guide for audio products so thank you Tom 😂
It's a good question! If you have the budget, it is usually nice to "have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it," but being realistic is good too. The size difference is pretty massive, so if you're only going to need more than 2 mics a few times a year, it might not be worth having the full size RCP taking up so much space.
Oh my gosh, I love it so much. It's "Miami Blue" which is probably the toughest color to show accurately in photos, but it looks awesome in person and plays great. I got it last year and it's the first American Fender I've played, and honestly, I can't believe how nice it is.
Love the music and humor! Well done Tom! Arg, I have the Pro2 for like 4 months and love it, but would love the smaller one more. Not sure worth to change. It's just me.
I use an IEMatch+ to get rid of the hiss when using the Duo with IEMs. Works well enough for me on the high setting (-12dB gain reduction), but if your headphones have low sensitivity you might not reach desired listening levels.
Nice! It's such a great mixer. What a video can't communicate is how nice the form factor/design feels in person and how fun it is to use. Hopefully you enjoy it a lot!
Great review as always! I feel like they don’t spread out the pricing well enough. This is so close to the 2, it’s almost better to play it safe and get 4 ports. Goes the other direction too, with the X.
I love the Duo, I wish it came out duo years ago because I had a few duo podcasters that I recommended the RCP2 or RCP1 to. The duo is really all most people need! Even the Streamer X in most rare cases! Super duper solid video my man, I throughly enjoyed it!
As much as I like the Duo, I think my favorite thing is to finally have a super easy recommendation for most people. The other Rodecasters are awesome, but I know they're overkill in a lot of situations.
Awesome piece of hardware! And great review, love your tone 😊 I’d have loved 32 bit recording instead of 24, but that’s the only thing I feel is missing.
Yeah, the internals on the Boss really kick butt! I just wish the build quality and user interface were a bit better (especially the interface- maybe it's just me but a lot of stuff seems super confusing haha).
Hey Tom, great video as always, i love Rode equipment but ill have to wait to buy this its a bit high still for me as a casual 😢 if Rode offered it at €300 id more than likely buy one. ❤
Maybe one day! I'm just starting out, so I have a SM58 and a Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen. The audio is way better than with my old USB headset mic, but it is still lacking. Unfortunately, this Rodcaster Duo is $499 and I got my Scarlett used on eBay for $65, so....yeah. Out of my budget, but I still appreciate the review, and it gives me something to aim for in the future.
The Scarlett is great! The 3rd gen doesn’t have as much gain, so you likely just need a booster and you’ll be good to go. The Klark Teknik CT1 is the most affordable one I know of and works quite well. It’ll add a lot more gain to the 58 and make things much easier to work with.
So wildly helpful, thank you Tom! Ordering a Duo. Could use some help selecting a Lav mic and understanding the different input options to the Roadcasters. Rode wireless go vs the Snnheiser kit, 3.5 vs 3pin.. Sound quality on lav mics. Professional boom operators in the film world seem to have their favorite standard mics and great tips for placement. Maybe you already have a video on this?
So lav mics are something I've been trying to learn more about this year, since they've been a weak point for me in the past. I've definitely learned that the mic's quality makes a huge difference. I've been using the Sennheiser MKE Essential microphone lately and I love how it sounds (you can hear it on my recent rolling camera stand and camera bag videos). It's the first lav mic I've found that doesn't sound like a lav mic. But I've also been running it through their EW-DP wireless system, which is phenomenal. I haven't yet tried to use it with the RCP, but it's probably worth the experiment. I'll definitely be using the XLR connector when I do.
Hi Tom, As always your videos are very interesting and inspiring. Can you please consider doing a video with the Rhodecaster Pro 2 and the Yolobox Ultra. Being able to use the 2 items together will be really helpful. You are very lucky to be married to a wonderful lady who not only is supportive and understanding but is also a content creator.
I have the rcp og, and I’m about to get the rcp 2. I’ll be using it for my podcast and videos as well as my music. However, I’m playing a digital piano so the clean recording is perfect.
A great review among many great reviews on this channel! I'll always reference your product reviews going forward for audio equipment. One quick note, please please watch your intonation when your playing chords on the guitar. The first few you played without any distortion or other effects had some issues, thanks!
I might have purchased the RCP2 instead had it kept to the shorter depth (distance front to back) of the Duo, but I glad I eventually settled on the Duo.
Thanks Tom. Great video as always. Will you be doing a detailed review of the Mackie DLZ Creator both from both the perspectives Live Stream/Podcasting and Music/Audio Production? Your take on the Mackie DLZ Creator will be most appreciated.
I'm honestly kind of stuck with the DLZ. I really like it overall, and it has some absolutely AMAZING features, but it's also super complicated and kind of a pain to use. It's thrown some kind of wrench into the works anytime I've tried using it as a standalone recorder/mixer. I think there's just a way bigger learning curve with it.
Thanks a ton Tom. It does seem like a solid product, especially thinking that it’s Mackie’s first real go in the area. I wonder what firmware updates may bring in terms of usability etc. I trust you will figure it all out at a point. And l do hope you will manage to put together a video about it. Am also curious to see if it may influence your opinion on Rodecaster 🤪🙂🙂. Thanks a ton!
Thanks, Tom, for this amazing video! Today my RodeCaster Pro Duo arrived, and I also bought the Sennheiser MKH 50. I hope to find the right settings so the sound will be better than my RodeCaster Pro with SM7B mic setup 🎉. I just want to have my mic out of the frame when recording a video. Goodluck with everything you do! 🙌🏻
I love your content! You have really helped me to pic equipment to start a podcast. Thanks! You may have answered this before, but where did you get the colored ear pads and the top pad for your rode headphones? Thanks!
Really happy the channel has been helpful! Congrats on your podcast! Rode sent the colored pads last summer, and I'm hoping they'll be for sale separately at some point, but I haven't seen them yet.
Having youtube play random videos on audio reviews while working and I got thrown off by that Reel Big Fish riff at 3:36. Lol. Anyways, that's besides the point. Always appreciate the high quality audio reviews from you!
When the world of podcasts and all the casts did not exist, I arrived accompanying a band (for example) to a radio station, and if there was going to be a musical participation as such, I produced on a compact console designed for audio and the outputs, were connected to the radio (or TV, etc.) console. I think that currently the same thing continues to happen, specifically, a musical production on the console designed for it (think behringer xr18, mackie dl1608, etc.) that will then be connected to the AV production in general (call it cast, radio, tv, streaming, etc.) Because there is still no console that can solve a multitude of AV presentations and/or needs.
True. Part of me thinks it's almost trickier in today's world because so many people are jacks of all trades and need to do a bit of everything, so they want a device that does the same (while also not being absurdly expensive). It seems like "the industry" is more accepting of single or specific purpose tools.
Thanks a lot for your very nice description of the Duo. I have a question, were get you the nice colored headphones from? I have seen them for the first time in your video. Greeting from Hannover (Germany). Yours Thomas.
Thanks for the kind words! Rode sent the colored pads out last year, but unfortunately they don't sell them. I keep trying to tell them that they should definitely sell them, but they haven't listened yet 😬
Here is to hoping that the third generation will show music creators some love, as well as folks who need accessibility. Example, screen reader users. I know that Rode has worked with some blind folks. Fingers crossed it only gets better and accessibility becomes more robust.
Could you add a section in future reviews for all audio recorders to ask "DOES IT HAVE 32bit FLOAT?" - If you ask about 32bit float in every audio recorder video, then manufacturers will see it as a way to differentiate from competitors.
I would instantly buy a Rode Caster solo. The duo has all the features I want but the only downside is it being expensive with and the fact that i would never need the 2nd XLR port for my streaming 2 pc set up
That's kinda sorta-ish the Streamer X (without a physical fader), but all of the processing is there via the Rode Central app, and you do have 4 Smart Pads. The only downside at the moment is it's really only compatible with 30fps, but if that's what you use then it's perfect.
Thanks, Tom. Was looking forward to your review of the Duo. Can't wait to get it. I love your lighting and color-coordinated cables.... where did you get the custom ear pads and band for the NTH-100s?!
Rode sent the pads over with the Duo and I'm really hoping it's a hint that they'll start selling them soon! Especially in different colors. 😎 I'm excited for you to get your Duo, I'm sure you'll really love it!
I purchased the Duo after watching all your Duo Reviews and Tutorials. And i will be setting it up this weekend. My question to you sir is. Where did you get the cable for your headphones? I wanna see if i can get a red cable for my Audio Technica’s
Been waiting for this! Have been following the Duo news and reviews since I heard about it, but I know how much you loved your rodecaster pro 2 so wanted to hear your thoughts on it.
Yeah, they're both great! I'm lucky to own both, but if I were to only buy one and I was being honest with what I actually need, the Duo would be the way to go.
Thank you for the informative video, Tom! Question for you. I currently have the Scarlett 2i2 and Cloudlifter CL-1 combo for my podcast/streaming setup. Would you recommend an upgrade to the Duo? Thanks again!
Hey Jeff! It really depends on how/if your current setup isn't meeting some of your needs. The 2i2 with a booster will be just about as clean as the Duo's signal, but the Duo will add physical faders, more inputs, onboard EQ, onboard recording, and sound pads. If you'll use those features then it'll be a huge upgrade, but if you just need a simple interface then there honestly won't be much of a difference.
Thank you so much, @@tombuck ! I actually goofed and called it the 2i2 instead of the 4i4 (what it really is). Reading your commentary, I'm sure the same applies. I do love the internal mix-minus functions (I'm an OG iMic x Skype podcaster before I upgraded🤣) and I'm thinking of eventually incorporating Discord/Twitter spaces into my setup. When it's time I'll circle back and reevaluate. Maybe the Duo 2 will be out by then! Thanks again my man!
I truly appreciate this review. I am an adventure videographer that would like to up my voiceover/podcast game by using a portable setup instead of my Rode Wireless Go 2. It would be super interesting to get your opinion on a portable podcast setup I could take and use anywhere off a battery pack and what specific gear you’d recommend. Cheers!
For people who do video streaming in remote locations, someone (RODE or Blackmagic Design) needs to release a design that combines the best of both worlds audio and video. 4 video inputs and two xlr inputs. Rodecaster meets ATEM Mini or something. There has to be an idea in there somewhere. Tricaster would rather you pay 10's of thousands of course .... anyway ...... you get it.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have the Rodecaster Pro 2, and I don’t think I can add an additional mic if I have 4 mic’s already connected to it. A wireless Rode mic will always replace 1 of the physical mic’s.
A wireless mic will take one of the 4 main channels (whether they're assigned to a physical fader or a virtual one), but you can use the new firmware to use a Rode USB mic as an additional source.
For additional Mics on input 3 and 4 you can use mics like sE V7 which is a fantastic Supercardiod that doesn’t require phantom power and will have plenty of gain and vocals sound great for $109
Hey Tom, any chance you're planning a Mackie/RunningMan DLZ Creator review any time soon? It's majoring got me debating whether to get the Rode of the Mackie!
I really want to, but I honestly don't know how to approach it. The DLZ is really nice, but it's also a pretty different beast. If you've got pro audio experience you'll likely feel right at home, but if you're a "normal" person then there's quite a learning curve and a bit of a convoluted workflow. Although to give credit, Mackie's instruction manual is literally the best I've ever read and the device itself has a pretty nifty tutorial/help guide.
I mean, you're right the instruments definitely sound better through the Gigcaster... but your choice of song selection was on point so it was good anyway. :D
Hey , wow if you don't have the best rode product podcasts I don't know who does. :) Thank you for all you do. I have a question no one has touched on I can find. How do you backup all your settings on the duo to sd card or other devices?
Thanks so much, excellent overview. I just purchased this and have some newbie questions if you have time: 1. Did you do some processing in post, such as boosting the gain a bit? Even at 60db, I still find my end result a bit quiet 😔 2. (Super newb question). I have my headphones plugged into the monitor at the back and can hear myself fine, but when I playback my recordings, I have to either switch the headphone line to my mac, use bluetooth headphones, or listen through the crappy speakers in my Studio. What do the pros do, if you want to playback as well as monitor through your headphones? Thanks!
Glad the video was helpful! 1. I've noticed that sometimes my recorded file seems a bit quieter than expected, in which case I will boost it about 6dB while editing. Not sure why or how this happens, to be honest. 2. When you say your headphones are plugged into the monitor, is it the actual monitor output or the headphone output? I've always used the dedicated headphone outputs and everything is fine. When using the monitor output, you might need to go into the Output settings in the menu and experiment with pre vs post fader to see if that solves the issue 👍
@@tombuck Thanks a mil for your response, Tom! Yes, slowly getting up to speed with this bit of hardware now, and I have sorted out my headphone monitoring! :)
Hey Tom, great video as usual. With the duo, if you're using two mics, can you also take a phone call for an interview? Or does the phone call count as a second mic so-to-speak?
I got the rode caster pro II for the music side (hoping to use as an all in 1 unit with the other features). Rode oversold it at the start being for musicians. So disappointed to see they've underdelivered and doesn't seem like they're going to improve any features for musicians either. Now I have to look into the gig caster as an alternative.
Yeah, it's a bummer in that regard. I've been using the Rodecaster ro pretty much everything, but now the Gigcaster also lives on my desk for playing/practicing. I actually prefer using it over a real amp most of the time, which is crazy. But the interface is rough, and there are a lot of strange workflow quirks is you actually want to use it as a standalone device like the Rodecaster. Nothing is quite as simple and polished as the RC in that regard.
I've got the pro 2 and i still want it. 😅 I bet it fits in my audio bag much better Edit: for the USB mic, the only way i was able to get it to work was by assigning my usb mic as a virtual device from the computer interface; so its plugged in via my PC and not directly into the rodecaster. Honestly, it worked fine but if you have the xlr mic, might as well use it.
Thank you! I actually just made a font from my handwriting. It's not too tough to do, and I have a video about it here: ruclips.net/video/iPRXm_zjZdU/видео.htmlsi=ezCpjkpTldN2GlL8
Hello. Can you recommend an audio interface for live broadcast and dubbing? If possible, you can also give microphone advice. My total budget for the audio interface and microphone is $1,000. I don't want to spend more than I need. I'm very undecided and I can't decide whether I should buy a Rodecaster Duo style product or whether the ID14 will do the job as well. I would be happy if you help
I don't have any experience with the ID14 myself, but I do like the Duo and similar mixers with more physical controls, onboard processing, and channel routing. It really comes in handy. If you only plan to use one or two mics, then the Duo is a great choice, and if you need more, then then Rodecaster Pro II is a good option 👍 As for mics, they're pretty personal since so much depends on your voice, environment, and preferences. I have a video that compares the Rode Podmic to 25+ other mics if you want to see if anything catches your ear: ruclips.net/video/QkxgSxBv6gQ/видео.html A few solid. recommendations though are the Lewitt LCT240 or 440, Shure SM7B, Rode NT1, or Blue Sona.
You can add third microphone to Duo via cable using front 3.5mm jack input together with third pair of headphones :) Checked this working for me with JBL Everest 700 BT headphones connected by cable :)
Hi Tom, I'd love to hear your comments about pre-processing compression and noise gate with something like the RCP Duo versus post-processing with Final Cut Pro or other software.
at 14:06 in the video.. you used the knob to turn up the volume im assuming on the faders.. and it created a blue line.. what is that blue line when adjusting that knob?
I'm happy that RODE has decided to keep this a podcaster only device. I feel when products try to be all things to all people you just end up with mediocre product overall. Also given that RODE was, for the most part, the first to market, they also have the most mature product as well an ecosystem that allows you to use other RODE products seamlessly. I guess this is growing up so I think I'll just have myself a beer 😉🙃😁
Hey, Tom. I just added the Wireless GO IIs and was surprised that the wireless receiver takes over one of the XLR inputs. So, if you already have two XLR mics plugged in, adding a third via the wireless isn’t an option. Or….am I missing something in the setup?
The more I hear the Shure sm7b, as it has become the default 'fancy' mic for streamers, youtubers, etc., the more I don't like it's sound profile. For most voices, it sounds muddy, or boomy. It LOOKS great, though.
This is how I've felt lately too. I've really been trying to dial in an EQ setting that I like, but can't quite get it. It does look great though and the built in shock rejection is phenomenal, which really does make it easier to use.

thanks for the great video, was just thinking of getting one for guitar plugins, but Boss is a better option then. And loved that your guitar was slightly out of tune when playing Blink :D
I have an iRig Pre 2, that allows me to connect an XLR mic to a phone (via TRRS) while direct monitoring. I wonder if using this with the TRRS port will allow for a 3rd XLR mic with direct monitoring.
feels like I have been looking for this exact product for several years. How could I have only found this now... my audio setup is quite convoluted right now and I am really unhappy with it. I set aside 1500 to upgrade headphones, microphone, interface and cables a few years ago and only found new headphones since. A friend suggested to Rodecaster Pro2 a few weeks ago and I just saw the smaller variant today - I will still look at the two alternatives you mentioned - but will have a chance this weekend to buy at a local audio professional. Still need to find the correct headwork microphone now - but I am optimisitc.
Hello sir. After watching tons of your videos and got myself the Rodecaster Duo paired with SM7b and can't be happier ❤❤ Thanks a million
I am thinking of buying the same pair. What arm/stand did you buy?
Man, the more I learn about video making the more I can see and respect the immense effort that goes into these videos. Great information!!
Thank you! There’s a lot that goes into it, but it’s a fun process and each person can make it their own.
The music demo was night and day! The fact that this man can nerd out AND shred some Blink 182 is INSANE 😳
Haha, thanks buddy!
So true. Most demos are hard to determine the difference but this was not even close.
This was the review I was waiting from the moment the duo was announced. Excellent work as always Tom.
great vid, one thing i would like to pass along for potential people wondering, while the jack in the front bottom is a trrs and can be used for headphones etc it is actually a trrs input meaning when people try to use it as an output you may experience diminished quality of sound if you are trying to plug a mic or potentially use the line to make phone calls. not saying that you can't make it work as an output but just be aware it's not natively an out so it may behave differently
Thanks for adding this bit of info!
Your studio and color theme is maybe the most beautiful I have ever seen on YT. Really pleasing to the eye just to watch.. as well as for the ear to listen of course.. Well done!
Thank you so much! This was the first comment I saw this morning and it totally made my day! 🙏
Hope you enjoy it! It's a VERY fun mixer to use.
Hi there Tom..Can you tell me wich vesa mounth and suport do you use to get the rodecaster of your desk? Thanks in advance..
Any VESA arm will work, but this is the one I use because it's super long: geni.us/bOkzyk1
Glad it was helpful! I think the Duo really does fit in to so many people's workflows really well.
I've noticed that they haven't been promoting the music functionality as much lately, so maybe they quietly decided to drop it?
@@tombuck they probably did. 😬
I have decided to buy Rodecaster Duo after your video even if I have Rodecaster Pro 2. Duo gives me more spaces on my everyday desk. 🎉
Yep! My Duo now lives on my "work" desk and the Pro 2 is saved for videos/projects/etc. It's very nice to have the extra space without losing any of the power.
If I didn't already have the Pro II, this would absolutely be my mixer of choice.
I wish there was an easy way to do it!
Same.
Yes. This seem like a great update to my device from long ago.... the Line 6 UX2
Tom, I think you are the one first reviewing the RCDuo in such detail. 👍
Thanks! I know there are a lot of really knowledgeable folks out there, but I was hoping to try and contextualize it a bit since it can be tough to decide which to buy.
I was literally searching your channel for this exact video a few days ago 😅
Ask and ye shall receive!
Ugh, that's no fun at all. I'm sorry all that happened 😕
Had the same situ with the RCP2. Sometimes it works smoothly and sometimes it doesn't
Hopefully the quality control issues of rodecaster products will improve
But what I have read and heard …there are quite a few lemons amongst the oranges.
By the way, if the duo has the same specs technically I will probably get that.
They're really improved all of the routing options so much, it's awesome.
When recording on board, does the duo or pro 2 record dry signal, or it records processed signal?
Great bass playing! Love the baby blue finish on it. It’s one of the coolest P basses I’ve seen.
Oh my gosh, I love it so much. It's "Miami Blue" which is probably the toughest color to show accurately in photos, but it looks awesome in person and plays great. I got it last year and it's the first American Fender I've played, and honestly, I can't believe how nice it is.
@@tombuck that's awesome, congrats! It's a beautiful bass!
Love the music and humor! Well done Tom! Arg, I have the Pro2 for like 4 months and love it, but would love the smaller one more. Not sure worth to change. It's just me.
Can confirm it’s still noisy as heck for low impedance headphones 😢 have a review on my second channel
I use an IEMatch+ to get rid of the hiss when using the Duo with IEMs. Works well enough for me on the high setting (-12dB gain reduction), but if your headphones have low sensitivity you might not reach desired listening levels.
Thanks for sharing, I really had no idea myself.
Great review. I was on the fence about the DUO. About 60% through I submitted my order to buy a duo.
$450 would be a sweet spot I think. Cheaper is always nice, but I don't think it could go as low as $400 unfortunately (but I'd love to be wrong! 😁 )
I'd suggest a behringer UMC204HD over the scarlett. It has inserts, so you can put whatever whacky analog effects you want on it.
Awesome piece of hardware! And great review, love your tone 😊
I’d have loved 32 bit recording instead of 24, but that’s the only thing I feel is missing.
Boss gigcaster 8 rules! Thanks for the vid.Tried Mackie DLZ, RCP 2 and Boss..The voice effects on the boss are so GOOD!
Yeah, the internals on the Boss really kick butt! I just wish the build quality and user interface were a bit better (especially the interface- maybe it's just me but a lot of stuff seems super confusing haha).
@@tombuck youre absolutely wright.. 🎉 U got used to it someday.. Regards..
Hey Tom, great video as always, i love Rode equipment but ill have to wait to buy this its a bit high still for me as a casual 😢 if Rode offered it at €300 id more than likely buy one. ❤
Super cool video. Your lighting and studio design is outstanding and, honestly, quite inspiring. 😎 👏
Thank you! It really means a lot to hear something so kind.
However, I’m playing a digital piano so the clean recording is perfect.
awesome comparison for instrument users. Just another level of comparison. +100
The Gigcaster really is awesome for anything music-related. Nowhere near as polished as the RCP in terms of user interface, but worth it.
A great review among many great reviews on this channel! I'll always reference your product reviews going forward for audio equipment.
One quick note, please please watch your intonation when your playing chords on the guitar. The first few you played without any distortion or other effects had some issues, thanks!
ur channel is so amazing, pure art
What arm are you using to mount your Rodecaster Pro on?
I might have purchased the RCP2 instead had it kept to the shorter depth (distance front to back) of the Duo, but I glad I eventually settled on the Duo.
Thanks for this video!! Also, LOVE that Coachella shirt! Go, Kraken!
Let's GO you actually dropped it 🔥
Thanks, Tom, for this amazing video! 🙌🏻
That's such an awesome combo! I hope you really enjoy it!
Thx tom for the answer . I like the thumbnail ❤
Great video! Very helpful and the production of it was great. Thanks for all you do. Keep it going!
I really appreciate that! Also- I'll be picking up your letter from our mailbox ASAP!
I’m flattered you could recognize it 😁
When the world of podcasts and all the casts did not exist, I arrived accompanying a band (for example) to a radio station, and if there was going to be a musical participation as such, I produced on a compact console designed for audio and the outputs, were connected to the radio (or TV, etc.) console.
All of this would be absolutely fantastic!
Could you add a section in future reviews for all audio recorders to ask "DOES IT HAVE 32bit FLOAT?"
- If you ask about 32bit float in every audio recorder video, then manufacturers will see it as a way to differentiate from competitors.
i want something like that, GoXLR Mini type of thing. just without the button pads and all in a more smaller compact size.
@@tombuck this would be the perfect alternative to the elgato eco system if the pads were displays instead of soft RGB pads.
I'm excited for you to get your Duo, I'm sure you'll really love it!
Cheers!
I can't believe how different the music sounds on the different devices
For people who do video streaming in remote locations, someone (RODE or Blackmagic Design) needs to release a design that combines the best of both worlds audio and video. 4 video inputs and two xlr inputs. Rodecaster meets ATEM Mini or something. There has to be an idea in there somewhere. Tricaster would rather you pay 10's of thousands of course .... anyway ...... you get it.
YES! I would buy this in a heartbeat.
@@tombuck It seems to me to be a natural technical evolution that has to come soon.
I like the light blue padding theme you got goin. Suits you bro.
In canada, this ones too expensive for just two mics, but if it's in your budget, then this is the one for you if you ONLY need two.
For additional Mics on input 3 and 4 you can use mics like sE V7 which is a fantastic Supercardiod that doesn’t require phantom power and will have plenty of gain and vocals sound great for $109
Thanks for another great video.
The line into the Duo, can it take a stereo input? Or is it purely mono?
As far as I know a single cable is mono, but if you have dual cables, you can link two channels to create a stereo pair.
22:08 The Rodecaster Pro 2 is just way, way too complex for what I need to do. I'm *very* glad I picked up the original when I did.
I mean, you're right the instruments definitely sound better through the Gigcaster... but your choice of song selection was on point so it was good anyway. :D
Haha, thanks!
With the duo would i be able to use 250+ ohm headphones without using separate hardware like the dt990x or the sennheiser 660s2, great video 😊
Hey , wow if you don't have the best rode product podcasts I don't know who does. :) Thank you for all you do. I have a question no one has touched on I can find. How do you backup all your settings on the duo to sd card or other devices?
Thank you for the kind words! You can save "shows" and profiles, but there's no genuinely good way to save/restore specific presets unfortunately.
Can you make a video on how to get usb two to input to obs using the sliders not the obs sliders for input volume ?
And do you do phone support lol for a small fee 😎
Thanks so much, excellent overview. I just purchased this and have some newbie questions if you have time:
1. Did you do some processing in post, such as boosting the gain a bit? Even at 60db, I still find my end result a bit quiet 😔
I love your cables. The colours are sick!
This is a great video! Thank you for such a detailed review.
@@tombuck definitely a bummer, it’s a big missed opportunity for Rode to monopolise so many segments.
The one unit to “rule them all”.
I wonder about using an effects pedal board like a Line6 HD500 XLR into the Duo. Then youd have all the effects, amps and sounds before the duo 🤔
4:02 freshman talent show throwback for me ;)
I'm glad you didn't blink and miss it. 😬
I've got the pro 2 and i still want it. 😅
I bet it fits in my audio bag much better
Edit: for the USB mic, the only way i was able to get it to work was by assigning my usb mic as a virtual device from the computer interface; so its plugged in via my PC and not directly into the rodecaster. Honestly, it worked fine but if you have the xlr mic, might as well use it.
Nice workaround! I'm really hoping they add simpler "native" support at some point soon.
@@tombuck I agree. I have some nice xlr mics but sometimes I still just want the blue yeti
Tom God Blessed you I love you content I have a questions where did you get you lower thirds the. Look bold love it
If you only plan to use one or two mics, then the Duo is a great choice, and if you need more, then then Rodecaster Pro II is a good option 👍
As for mics, they're pretty personal since so much depends on your voice, environment, and preferences. I have a video that compares the Rode Podmic to 25+ other mics if you want to see if anything catches your ear: ruclips.net/video/QkxgSxBv6gQ/видео.html
A few solid. recommendations though are the Lewitt LCT240 or 440, Shure SM7B, Rode NT1, or Blue Sona.
I swear the only reason I don’t like the bar on fenders, it just won’t keep tune on the low E and the G
Thanks Tom! Great job as usual!
at 14:06 in the video.. you used the knob to turn up the volume im assuming on the faders.. and it created a blue line.. what is that blue line when adjusting that knob?
It indicated that channels level within the headphone mix (doesn't affect the actual output level).
Gotta admit, I tune in to Tom as much for the puns as I do for the content. And that's the straight truth, no DUOvers.
Side note, the PSA 1+ look so clean without the logo. Would bought it instantly if it came without the logo.
Yep. I just saw one in the background of a TV show episode and could not stop staring at the logos. Totally missed the scene 😁
I have an iRig Pre 2, that allows me to connect an XLR mic to a phone (via TRRS) while direct monitoring. I wonder if using this with the TRRS port will allow for a 3rd XLR mic with direct monitoring.
Can you share the type of arm mount you are using for the Rodecast II Pro, please? I like that! Thanks and great video!
Any VESA arm will work, but I've been using this one which I like because it's super long: geni.us/bOkzyk1
I am not able to figure it out how you mount it. Can you make a video with the mount? I like it.
feels like I have been looking for this exact product for several years.
