One thing to consider is your podcast doesn't have to go on forever. A 20 episode, 10 episode, 4 episode show is perfectly fine. Consider it like an audio book you're writing with your voice and if it only works for 13 episodes, congrats! You just recorded your first audio book in podcast form.
My son and I just launched our podcast on Spreaker, and had 30 downloads our first week. It's nice to know we're on our way! It's soooooo much fun and very gratifying to produce content you care about. Great video, Tom. Thanks for what you do.
The best way to learn is to start teaching others. Audio quality is more important than video quality. Edit before publishing. Prepare the environment, tools, editing and publishing so that producing an episode is easy, then you can focus on the content. The title and cover image are important. Be consistent. Trust yourself.

I enjoy podcasting more than making youtube videos my podcast is where I can fully be myself and talk about my life what interest me and my health. All you need is a mic, USB adapter and a phone to start I use Anchor and I enjoy it. Now that I have a laptop I'm learning how to record audio from it
I love the accessibility of podcasting! And when someone becomes an active listener of your show, they're in it for the long haul, which means you do have that freedom to let things breathe and explore more personal topics.
I learned that gear is important for quality but shouldn't delay starting - focus on upgrading over time. Free tools like GarageBand can still produce decent audio quality. I loved the practical advice on microphone positioning and techniques for better sound quality. The recommendation to start with any platform and adjust later was liberating. Your suggestion to focus on starting the podcast and gradually upgrading gear is solid advice; it's about progress over perfection. Choosing topics that genuinely excite me is key - passion keeps the momentum going.
You da man! To echo Catias Frezza below, "When you teach, you learn twice." Oh yeah and be consistent. I have done Zen meditation every day without fail for 30 years. Think about it. I may not be the best, but I'm relentless.

Hello Tom! I am a Brand New Podcaster and I recently took your advice and bought the RODE PODMIC And I have fallen in love with it. I’ve actually purchased 4. My question for you is this: I have the PODMIC And I really love the RODECASTER. but the problem is that it’s extremly pricey is their a way I can get a discount on it or are their any alternatives temporarily? I really love the RODE-CASTER. RODE-CASTER is definitely suiting the needs of the Production I will be doing. How Sturdy is the RODE-CASTER? Is it built well? Or is it made of cheap plastic? I heard the quality is very well which I must take sure of before I fund any savings. What’s your opinion of the build quality Tom?

Hey @Tom I recently discovered your channel and because of you I started thinking around creating my own podcast. But, beside your videos about podcast are great I never saw anything about podcast monetization, and it is hard to find something for beginners. Could you, please, create a video about that or let me know if any of your courses talk about that, if yes than I'm in.
That's a good question! I don't touch on it too much because for the most part, it's pretty slim pickins' Some platforms let you embed ads kind of like RUclips, but the payoff is very very small. You can of course do things like brand sponsorships or Patreon, where you have a bit more control over the revenue. You know, on second thought, it might make sense to just make a video about this 😁
Such a seamless direction of your dog assistant… Great tips, as usual! But, people get tired of me talking about…anything… they say I'm too intense.. This needs an ironic smiley I guess..
Oooh, that's a tough one. They're very different with the PodMic being a dynamic and the NT1 being a condenser, so they'll pick up different environmental sounds. But if I had to make a choice, speaking very generally, I'd say the NT1 is better. It's an incredibly natural sounding mic, and since it's a condenser it has plenty of gain via Phantom Power so you won't need to worry about signal boosters.
A great set of tips as usual, Tom. Love the co-star. What would you suggest for a setup (in terms of set, process etc.) for lecturers and professors who aren't in the media field and, therefore, might not be able to justify the awesome bells and whistles you've got going on? I've been watching a lot of your video but, as your wife would say, I'm currently in the 'paralysis by analysis' phase- it's all incredibly overwhelming.
Great question Lauren! There are a lot of simple recorders out there, like the Zoom P4 which have some of the Rodecaster's features at a lower price. But of course, you can also get started with just a phone or a simple USB mic connected to your computer. GarageBand is a great free editing app for the Mac and Audacity is a great free choice for Windows. Then upload your file to a hosting platform and you're all set!
Is there any software for iPad, Windows, or MAC OS that you can suggest to use instead of a rodecaster pro? to be able to do a live podcast with sound effects and that
I’m sure there are tools you can daisy chain together to achieve similar results, but the truth is, if you want the functionality of a Rodecaster you;lol need to get a Rodecaster. It’ll save a lot of frustration in the long run.
@@tombuck yes I can see that, for your videos I see that isnthe perfect tool but I want to start right now have the idea but do not have loney for the zoom or rode =(
The main "consistency" key is about "the dip" Seth Godin talks about. The average number of podcast episodes is 7 - most people give up after 7 episodes. If you go past that you're already above average.
How can I get in touch with you ? I need some advice on equipment, I have my own RUclips channel and I don't want to keep spending money in stuff I don't need. Thanks !!!
Just want to say thank you, you avtually help me get somewhere for once lol i have to now think of how i want to avtually start it and what the titles should ect.... ps: i didnt get my $20 gift card xD
That's a tough one, but an important question. Personally, I think giving the show context is important. Let them know a bit about the show and WHY they would be a good fit for the audience. Also be clear about the time commitment/process. Do they need a camera? Is it audio-only? All of those things can help.
@@tombuck Thanks Tom, I appreciate your insight. I just discovered your channel recently and I absolutely love the content! As a podcaster and content creator myself, your updates on all the latest recording equipment has been huge for me. Also, congratulations on 100k subscribers, you deserve it!

I don't think you understand the Pandora's box you just opened... In our family we have 2 B&W Border collies, a business of ferrets, 1 single polish crown hen, along a Siamese kitten. How am I supposed to allocate a camera for all that? (mic'n the chick'n is a great idea tho')
As the guy that's watching this video just to see what kind of advice is going out there now, I can say pretty confidently that this is some of the best advice people will find.
No bc my podcast is about everything it's a chat show because I can none stop talk about something one week and then the next complete forgot about that thing and be hyper focused on another 😹

I don't remember the exact seller, but I found it on Etsy. There are a few people making audio waveforms from the song or file of your choice 👍
The main "consistency" key is about "the dip" Seth Godin talks about. The average number of podcast episodes is 7 - most people give up after 7 episodes. If you go past that you're already above average.
Yep! “The Dip” makes a lot of sense after the excitement of something new wears off.
I love the b-roll with the doggies! 😍
Thanks for a great tips video!
Cheers!
He steals the show for sure.
What mic are you using in this episode?
70k subs coming any second now.
Unreal! What a ridiculous number 😱
How can I get in touch with you ? I need some advice on equipment, I have my own RUclips channel and I don't want to keep spending money in stuff I don't need. Thanks !!!
You can always send and email from himynameistom.com/contact
If I get 28 downloads within the first 7 days, my podcast will be in the 50 percentile?!!! Whoa! My wig just blew off!
Crazy right? No need to put a ton of pressure on yourself 👍
what camera do you use?
My main camera is the Sony a7SIII and the secondary cameras are Canon EOS R's.
Tom!! Haha did your Dog just licked the microphone? 😁😁😁
He's masterful in his craft.
@@tombuck haha you’re funny bro
Great tips Tom , thanks 😊👍
You’re welcome Qippy!
What kind of camera do you use? would share that with me?
My main camera is the Sony FX3 👍
28. Now that's a number that sounds achievable.
Exactly! Much more down-to-Earth 👍
How do i ask a direct question? This is soul crushingly overly difficult. With?
Just want to say thank you, you avtually help me get somewhere for once lol
i have to now think of how i want to avtually start it and what the titles should ect.... ps: i didnt get my $20 gift card xD
Happy it was helpful! I don’t know anything about gift cards though?
What is the best strategy for pitching a podcast to potential guests?
That's a tough one, but an important question.
Personally, I think giving the show context is important. Let them know a bit about the show and WHY they would be a good fit for the audience.
Also be clear about the time commitment/process. Do they need a camera? Is it audio-only? All of those things can help.
@@tombuck Thanks Tom, I appreciate your insight.
I just discovered your channel recently and I absolutely love the content!
As a podcaster and content creator myself, your updates on all the latest recording equipment has been huge for me.
Also, congratulations on 100k subscribers, you deserve it!
You need the rodecaster anyway so get it first
GREAT information! This made me feel good about my podcast analytics! Your videos are truly inspiring every week. Thanks for all of the hard work.
Thanks Preston! It’s best to stay away from analytics sometimes (says the guy who’s currently looking at analytics).
How can I get a consult?
Thanks for asking! My consultations are currently closed, but might open up again later in the fall. My summer schedule has quite a few projects happening, so I need to focus on those for now😬
@@tombuck #sadface I’ll wait until then. Thank you for all your videos. Love them
I don't think you understand the Pandora's box you just opened... In our family we have 2 B&W Border collies, a business of ferrets, 1 single polish crown hen, along a Siamese kitten. How am I supposed to allocate a camera for all that? (mic'n the chick'n is a great idea tho')
I just kept waiting for the partridge in a pear tree 😁
"Whatever you are watching this video on can be what you start with to produce your podcast" Me watching on Playstation 4.... Challenge accepted
Hey you can connect a mic to a PS4 🤷🏻♂️
@@tombuck I'm actually going to try and fully produce a podcast on a PS4. I'll let you know how it goes haha
@@jonahkrylo5780 Lol. Keep us updated.👌🏼
Gooood morning VietTOM
Nice.
As the guy that's watching this video just to see what kind of advice is going out there now, I can say pretty confidently that this is some of the best advice people will find.
Thanks Justin! I’m really glad to hear that 👍
and he is back with another great one(I dont even have to watch the video to know its amazing!)
Haha, thank you!
Which microphone do yo use in this video?
The is the Rode NT1- I did a review on it a few weeks ago 👍
@@tombuck thanks!!
This guy's the real MVP.
Ahh shucks 😬
First
No bc my podcast is about everything it's a chat show because I can none stop talk about something one week and then the next complete forgot about that thing and be hyper focused on another 😹
As long as everyone is having fun, it's all good!
I WOULD PAY GOOD MONEY TO LISTEN TO THE PAW-DCAST
You gotta support his Pawtreon 😬
@@tombuck a couple "bucks" worth of treats... fine by me!
I don't get the 'podcast' joke?!?!
I knew it! You ARE intelligent. No, podcasts are great, I keep returning, but for proof? Intelligent people have intelligent dogs - like short-haired Border Collies, right? Keep up the good work, have BC give its opinion? No... oh.
Oh he has lots of opinions! He's actually a corgi, but mostly black and white so he doesn't immediately look like a corgi. Super smart though and very opinionated.
My boy looks like Toby Flenderson trying to be funny in some other universe. 🤣
You sound has a very "played with" vibe, like you've got way too many filters going on.
Which is funny because there’s no processing 🤷🏻♂️
