    Funny hearing what a hard time he had getting the filter off. Ive always done my own maintenance, but i moved to Florida last summer, and all my tools were in storage, so i took my bike to crystal harley (don't mind calling them out) and got all three holes done. Decided to change my oil again before bike week. Couldn't even remove the filter with channel locks, had to go by a filter wrench, and it took 4 full turns, before i could remove it by hand. Lesson learned!

      The first time I changed the oil on my Softail after I got it, I couldn't get the filter off. I got a metal oil filter cup style wrench and it stripped out the end of the filter. So I stabbed it with a screwdriver and ended up putting the screwdriver all the way through the filter. The filter came apart, the metal shredded as I tried to wrench it off. I did eventually get the filter off, but I just couldn't believe it.

    Last week, doing an oil change, I was thinking how useless the special drain funnel for the oil filter removal is. Dripping oil all over the casing, even though I pressed it tight against the filter mount. And I was thinking: what a stupid spot to place an oil filter.
    Fast forward a week and I find this! DK Customs never fail to amaze me with their innovative solutions and I'm a long-time happy user of the EBS and air cleaner kits. This is one I will definitely add to my collection, soon.
    But I do have one question, guys: does the system not impede oil flow in any way? After all, Harley OEM oil pumps do not have the best reputation in regard to circulating power and you're adding about a foot of hose and some 90° angles to the circuit.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 месяца назад +2

      They do not. Some of the passageways in the engine are much more restrictive than the passageways in the oil cooler & oil filter relocation.
      The one factor in the oil loop that can put a load on the oil pump is a paper (OEM & most aftermarket) oil filters.
      That is why we use permanent performance oil filters, because with them there is much less strain on the oil pump.
      You can see a video where we dyno tested performance oil filter compared with OEM oil filters. You can see that at this link- ruclips.net/video/__WbuX1IT1c/видео.html

      We do offer braided hose as an option, but the braided hose is not very malleable and the rubber hose is very malleable. All the other hose on the bike stock is rubber, but if rubber is not what you want you can always upgrade to the braided hose.

    I used this setup on my 2020 Freewheeler trike... four issues. 1. installing the filter adapter to the down tube over the factory decal will destroy it making the information unreadable. 2. the adapter could only be installed in a manner that would allow the cylinder side bolts to be mounted. due to the close proximity to the head, the top inner bolt was a nightmare to tighten. 3. it is nearly impossible to properly tighten the clamps on the the engine adapter hoses. one must be very careful. 4. I had to make a tool to remove the engine adapter because my hands are too big, which prevented me from applying enough torque to remove it. you guys should consider making and selling this tool. I sent you a picture a few years back. otherwise, it works great : - )

      Good to hear that you have enjoyed the benefits of the Oil Filter Relo, and that it is working great for you.
      We probably could have done a better job of showing a few more hints on making the install go easier.
      Regarding the decal...I have taken them off and never noticed how damaged the decal was...I guess because the only thing on the decal that I have ever been interested in is the build date.
      Not understanding the difference you experienced in mounting it on the downtube...as you saw in this video, we did not have any difficulty with it.
      The hint on making it easy to tighten the hose clamps on the engine adapter hoses is to point the clamp toward the front tire and at about the 10 am position...that way it is easy to use a screw driver or a socket (with an extension) thru the downtubes as you see Nathan doing at the 9:38 mark in this video.
      Regarding removing the engine adapter...I have found that using a screwdriver, or the handle of a wrench, and putting it between the two hose barbs will give me the leverage to break it loose, and then it is easy to spin off. Only time I have had to do that is when I have traded in a bike and wanted to remove the kit for installation on the next bike.
      Thank you for your comments, they are appreciated, and will help us to make better videos in the future. KP

      @@DKCustomProducts the decal is there for a reason... it has information that benefits the owner. on my 2020 Freewheeler trike, there was a steel tube line that was mounted VERY close to the down tube, which prevented certain positions for the filter adapter. in turn, this caused the top left bolt on the engine side to be in a position that prevented the use of regular tools. I had to modify (shorten) an Allen wrench and hand tighten the bolt. yes, aiming the clamps and using the tightening tool through the down tubes is the best way. however, your ability to determine if it is tightened properly is difficult, which will most likely lead to over tightening. I installed the hoses on the adapter first and then screwed the adapter onto the engine. it was not easy, but much easier than blindly tightening the clamps afterwards. using a screwdriver to remove the adapter can only happen if the fittings are positioned that will allow a screwdriver room to move. you guys could easily make a tool to remove the adapter. I made one and it worked great. I also used a dab of grease to hold the adapter spacers in place instead of using tape. thanks : - )

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  4 месяца назад

      It sounds like the oil filter relo that is located under the left side passenger foot rest would have been a better match for you.
      I am sorry the install did not go as smoothly or easily for you as we would have liked. Very glad you persevered and are not enjoying the benefits. 👍
      I know yours is done, and not trying to change your mind...but for other reading I think the following may be useful.
      -If the info on the decal is important to you, take a photo or video of it before covering it up. Using the plastic shims should not damage the decal at all/or much.
      -Yes, a shorter Allen wrench can be useful...also, spacing the tube out from the frame with a small spacer or some washers, along with a longer bolt, will give you more available placement options.
      -It is pretty easy to see (use a flashlight if necessary) how tight the hose clamp is...also, one can use their fingers to feel how tight it is...and another trick I recently learned. Take a photo, then you can expand it (make it bigger) so you can get a close up of things in tight spaces.
      -We have put the hoses on the engine adapter, then put the adapter on the engine...definitely doable, but a bit of a PITA.
      -Yes, it may be necessary to use the hole in the handle end of a crescent wrench if the barbs are not lined up right for a screw driver. 95% of the time, once an engine adapter is mounted, it is never removed.

      Tbf, if this was a difficult install I doubt the design was the issue, more of a mechanical ability problem. As far as the decal, a wrap of gasket material or electrical tape would be an easy fix. Same thing that’s used on crash guards when installing highway pegs, to prevent leaving any marks.

    Thinking of this for my Dyna. Do you make a kit to run through the filter, to a cooler, and back into the inlet port to the engine from there? Not sure if that is proper from an engineering standpoint... it just makes sense to me to pump it out, clean it, cool it, then send it back into the system. With the added benefit of making the hose routing fairly simple and straight forward as well. Just curious before i start investing in parts.

    How often do the oil lines need to be replaced?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  18 дней назад +1

      It all depends on the variables of miles ridden, temps ridden in, whether it is kept inside or outside, climate controlled, etc. Same as all the hoses on your car or the hose that came on the bike from the factory.
      We recommend looking at them every oil change and replacing if you see any signs of them getting old or worn. For myself, riding in lots of cold and lots of hot, I typically replace the hose every 4-5 years and/or every 40K to 50K miles.

      @stewartsmall5695. You might need to add a little bit more. Just ck yre oil level on the dipstick to be sure it's at the correct mark. 🇺🇸😎

      @@DKCustomProducts Not HD... they invented nothing, all technology come from other brands and their last reliable engine was ... Porsche design. HD, the two wheeled Range Rover.

    As much as I like this setup I would be concerned about one thing. Someone could come by and in 5 seconds unscrew the billet filter assembly and could remove their stock filter and screw this on their bike.

      And they could do the same thing with a seat, a saddlebag, quick detach sissy-bar or Tour Pak, air cleaner, etc. ...or you could just run a spin on filter.
      Glad you like the setup. 👍😎👍
