    With my latest 3.0 TTS tune, against advise, I made a ‘test tune’ to experiment and turned off my decel enleanment and limited my accel enrichment. (After full and accurate MAP/RPM mapping)
    Now it’s a very mellow pop with tempo- much more acoustically pleasing- will monitor for negative effects

    Glad to hear deceleration pop does not harm bike. My CVO Breakout with V&H Big Radius pipes had loud decel pop; I had a Harley dealer look at it because it was pretty loud. They tuned it and it still popped so I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 года назад +1

      Don't remember the years of the CVO Breakout, but I think they were all Twin Cams. Depending on your Dealer, you probably have an EPA compliant tune in that bike. If that is the case, then it is probably running a bit too lean for its own good. Worth checking in to. Here is a video on the subject- ruclips.net/video/7sn7CrmSDL4/видео.html

      I second what DK said.. I had a tc 96 with big radius on a 2012 street bob. That exhaust made it a bit too lean. An indie mechanic pointed out to me that it was running too mean, he could tell just by looking at it when i first brought it in, the exhaust stud nuts were chalky white from the excessive heat, he tuned it on the dyno with a power commander and that bike ran amazing after, ran cooler and no pop and a bit more power

    Excellent explanation! I used to work for several different dealerships over the years, and I did see in one case where the bike running lean. The crazy thing was it new out of the bike (Yamaha V-Star 1100), of course it was warrantied, we jetted the carbs and the guy never had an issue there after.

      Had a horrible case of decel pop on my RS it turned out to be both loose and corroded pipe head connectors once the mechanic resurfaced the pipe ends never had an issue that bad. Recently with an intake manifold leak had the pop but not as bad, once I fixed that it is running ok that is it pops a little specially when engine braking hard. Question: What is “RF”?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 года назад

      The probability that it is tuned too lean is slim, but not impossible. It is more likely that you are just having decel pop from open exhaust, not from being super-heated from too lean of a tune. But you can use your FP3 to check your AFR and if it is good/not too lean.

Noticeable power increase, especially from filter. Below 1000 rpm the stock was better. Do a lot of ride like a pro parking lot maneuvering. Still will idle through the course no problems. I just removed the quiet baffles from a bike I bought second hand with V&H pipes on it and it pops and crackles literally every single time I let off the throttle haha. It actually was doing it still with the baffles in it just wasn't as noticeable because the baffles were doing their job. I have taken off all the fibreglass on the baffles and plan to try reinstall those baffles in an attempt to find a spot with good volume and seeing if the added restriction dulls some of the pops. If not then I guess I might have to see about getting the tune looked at. It has been tuned previously so it's possible it's running lean or it was tuned to pop by the previous owner. Bike is a Yamaha Bolt 950. Great video guys!

      All you gotta do to get rid of the pop is change the AFR in the pipes. Best way to do this is to put a TTI in your RR 2-1. See link below. You will have a bump in low and mid range power, and should have a reduction in decel pop.

    Ok, I bought a 2003 Softail tuned for acceleration by a previous owner. He raced. It had open short pipes and a prominent deceleration pop. I put the stock pipes back on. I find its power, while maybe a bit less, is much more controlled. Before, it accelerated in more of a sharp on or off feel. Now, I don’t get that hard pull. I don’t hear the pop. I’m a smoother, happier rider. I don’t race. I cruise. Not everyone is served by max power.

Adjusted it manually as per instructions and although it has vastly decreased, it still pops now and then..some times more than other times. Never had decel pop until I ran the tuner. Pipes are same...exhaust is same. Still run premium fuel. Originally bought the tuner to hopefully cool bike down somewhat with an enriched fuel ratio.
    Installed your tank lift kit and a set of fans on side...seems to help..but still not as cool as I'd like I think. Florida 100* days can be brutal.

      Decel pop is not bad for your bike, but you can install some TTI's in the exhaust, that will make the bike run stronger, COOLER and reduce the decel pop. And you can also use the decel enleanment feature on the Power Vision to reduce the pop, if you don't like it.

    I talked to oil company representative about octane. He said octane is graded in levels of tenth. So if octane raises one % that rally means 1/10. So, I started adding ten times more treatment, to where the motor was running at seemingly maximum performance or "Hot" with diesel deceleration pop so extreme, I felt I needed to add some gas to reach that max performance! What I'm saying here is, octane boosters had a real impact on decelerating pop! But I use that pop as a mixture guide!

      @@DKCustomProducts yeah, I thought to raise an octane meant from 87 octane to 88 octane, but it doesn't! It means= 87.1 octane.....to 87.9 then changes up to 88 octane. If you add enough octane you can definitely feel where engine runs at its best, then even feel overdosed with octane can have Pops, & even flames out exhaust! So, I actually use premium fuel, but know it's not near as good as fuel in the 60s, so, I research each bike until I know how it likes to run best, then add octane boosters accordingly at gas stations!

    So I have a TC 96” with super e carb, teardrop air cleaner and VH bigshots exhaust. Running .031 intermediate and .076 main and a hell of a lot of decel pop. Bikes runs good , and has good throttle response. Should I be using different jets?

      Each bike is different and it has been over a decade since we've spent any significant time jetting bikes, (even if we had, need to be with the bike and working on it to know for sure if a jetting change is needed).
      We do work with CV-Performance.com and you may get some good info from them.
      If it is running good, no stumbles, it would seem you are dialed in.
      With your bigshots, use the TTI's at the link below. They will improve your low and mid range power, also will reduce the decel pop some.

      Good point. That is what some of the different tuning strategies use..you are doing in manually.
      Those tuning strategies feed extra fuel into the intake, even if you have let up all the way on the throttle.
      By doing that (via computer, or manually) you are changing the AFR in the exhaust, making it so rich that it will not ignite and create any popping.
      Thanks for your comment!

  • @N269
    @N269 3 месяца назад +1

    The "pop" is unburnt fuel being burnt after the exhaust valve. That's a given. There is one obvious omission: PAIR. PAIR introduces fresh air directly into the exhaust after the exhaust valve. This introduction is (obviously) deliberate and is for emission control. I believe PAIR was introduce on the Japanese bikes (I have no research to that effect). You are correct, the "pop" is not a damaging thing, and as yourselves, I do really like that crack. Bear in mind, that by running the engine richer with a PAIR system, there may be excessive "pops". PAIR/"pop"/blanking PAIR - has absolutely no effect on engine performance (4-stroke) and could possibly negatively affect any cat/conv down the line.
    Thanks for a great video production.

    Gotta say you guys are always helpful, so here is a question : Ive got a 2003 TC 88 with the 606 EBS Stg 1 aircleaner and a well setup carb and because "I love the sound", Big Radius exhaust. At 10k I checked CRO and it was only .0025, so I installed a S&S 509g complete camchest set. I decided on this, rather than the 510s, because I like the lower to mid rpm range for my style (2500-4500).. Because the Big Radius 2 into 2 are a higher rpm exhaust its preventing me from getting the full potential out of my setup.. Here is question.. Im about to pull trigger on possible $1000, 2 into 1 exhaust.. Which would you guys suggest ?

      For under $50 you can get some Thunder Torque Inserts™ that will bring back your low and mid range Torque, PLUS some! I would give that a try first and see if you are happy with it.
      The 2-1 may bring back the low and mid range almost to as good as your current 2-2 with TTI's.
      Of course, the 2-1 with a TTI would be even better low and mid range Torque...but only you know if it is worth $1000 to you for that little bit extra.

    I have a 2017 FLSTC Heritage Softail with Twin slash 3" slip ons fitted that decel pop a lot and mates riding behind me always comment on the smell of fuel coming from my exhaust.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching our videos, and glad you are enjoying them.
      Yes, the Thunder Torque Inserts™ will reduce/eliminate the decel pop. You will have more low and mid range power, so you will not need to twist the throttle so much to get the same forward movement. So you should have less of a gas smell.
      Don't know what, if anything, you're running for a tuner...but if there is still any gas smell, you may still be a bit rich. But the likelihood is that it is just incomplete combustion, due to the reversion, and will probably be gone once the TTI's are installed.

      Man, I wish we could help, but we are completely unfamiliar with that bike and with the mods you have done.

      Copy and pasted from our Harley Exhaust Report:
      Decel popping does Not damage your engine...it is simply unburnt fuel that is burning in the exhaust tract after exiting the engine.
      Decel popping is NOT indicative of a bad tune.
      Decel popping occurs when one of two things are present.
      1. The bike is so lean the exhaust is superheated and is burning the unburnt fuel that is in the pipes (there is always some unburnt fuel in the pipes no matter how lean). This is very rare.
      2. The AFR IN THE pipes is just right to burn the unburnt fuel. This is quite a common occurrence when free flowing pipes are installed (whether or not a free flow A/C is installed). It can also occur if there is an exhaust leak that is introducing extra air into the exhaust tract.
      You can see the entire report at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/harley-exhaust-myths-and-facts.htm
      Since you have removed your baffles, if you will put some Thunder Torque Inserts in them, you will get a little deeper tone, and you will have a very nice bump in low and mid-range power. My FP3 app allows me to select the decel pop factor by choosing the 'firecracker' icons. V&H say that if you select more firecrackers, you get less decel pop, which doesn't make sense. I would have thought that choosing less firecrackers would minimise the decel pop.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 года назад

      Yeah, they're sort of counter-intuitive. Their thinking is that folks want to get rid of the decel pop, so you choose how much you have...just a little is one firecracker, medium amount is 2 firecrackers, a lot is 3 firecrackers. The more firecrackers you choose, the more fuel they add in at zero throttle, changing the AFR so reduce/eliminate decel pop.

      Is it popping out of the carb on acceleration?
      A rough rule of thumb is that a lean mixture will backfire through the carb and a rich mixture will backfire through the exhaust.
      Having said that, adjusting the idle mixture screws will change the mixture at IDLE and slightly off of idle. Once you open the throttle, the mains start flowing and the adjustment of the idle mixture screws is pretty much irrelevant. If the popping is at idle, then it might be the mixture screws. If it's at part throttle, it's something else...like an intake manifold leak.

You can check the spark plugs after running at different throttle positions, black plugs being rich, white dry plugs being lean. When I adjust my idle mixture, the popping goes away and my spark plugs look good. So check your spark plugs when in doubt!

      Installing the TTI's will give you a boost in low-mid range torque. If you are not experiencing decel pop installing the TTI's can cause decel pop because it changes the AFR. Decel pop is not bad for your bike.
      If you do not like the decel pop you can get the bike tuned so that the decel pop does not happen.

    I removed the catalytic converter and installed an X-pipe on my Triumph Bobber. They tuned the new setup. The deceleration burble is slightly louder, but I notice a stronger smell of gasoline. Any ideas?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  5 месяцев назад

      A catalytic converter gets so hot and burns off the excess exhaust gasses. It is possible that without it, you are just not burning off the gases as much as you did before.
      It is also possible that you could be running a little rich. If you notice a loss in power you may be tuned a little rich. Here is a video on a FAQ about catalytic converter removal that you may find interesting/useful- ruclips.net/video/ks39Gwb3NdI/видео.html

    my car does this. it has a custom exhaust and weber carbs. the exhaust pops and crackles when im off the accelerator and coasting, if i richen the idle mixture it goes away but at idle the mixture is very rich and the pistons and plugs get full of carbon. i wish i could get rid of the sound without having overly rich mix at idle

      Use some TTI's. The will change the AFR in the exhaust, by reducing reversion and increasing exhaust gas velocity. This will improve power and reduce/eliminate the decel pop.
      More details on them here- www.dkcustomproducts.com/thunder-torque-inserts-258-model-family-dk-tti-258.htm

    My 107 M8 is tuned on E85 and has a Map for Race and 91 I have 0 decel pop with perfectly balanced cylinders as far as AFR goes. I’ve heard horror stories about decel pop and Harleys maps from the factory. My 2020 baggers stock spark plugs with only 5k miles on them at the time were so over heated and the grounding back strap color was so off towards advance. The EPA is ruining these bikes from the factory

    The old adage is that if it pops thru the carb it's lean, and it's rich if it pops thru the exhaust, but tuning and gas quality can do the same.

      True that on carbed bikes, more often than not. EFI bikes, not so much.

    I run a 1275cc Sportster with a Mikuni and the jets recommended for my head/cam setup and straight drag pipes as per Hammer performance. I don't get the decel pop that sounds like fire crackers, instead I get a "thump, thump.. thump" sound similar to pulling a cork out of a large bottle. So I'm unsure whether it's lean/rich or just right.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад +1

      You cannot do better than the advice from Hammer Performance on one of their kits.
      A general rule of thumb is that if it pops out the pipe it is too lean, if it pops (farts) out of the carb it is too rich.
      You can fool around with the jetting and go by the seat of the pants, or you can put it on the dyno with some sniffers and see the actual AFR at different throttle settings and loads.

    • @6sillygtivr
      @6sillygtivr 2 года назад +1

      @@DKCustomProducts the reason I dropped a jet size is because I had raw fuel accumulated on the tips of my pipes. So I now have dry pipes but the "milk jug" thump so I'll play with the air screw a little and see how it goes.

    Hi, Where Have You Installed TTI on a Fishtail Pipe, Without Baffles. Can You Add Few Pictures, Please, I Have Straight Fishtails on My Road King, Can We Install Them in the Middle, Towards the End Fishtail Is Quite Hard to Reach. I Wait for Your Reply, Thanks

    • @DKCustomProducts

      With the Samson pipes I have, the tails are removeable and we put them right at the end of the pipe, before the tails. You can see and hear in this video- ruclips.net/video/GuIgK-rc2s4/видео.html
      On Fishtails where the tail is not removeable, sounds like you are doing the best you can.

      @@sikhbikersoflondon The closer you put them to the end, the better. If the middle is the closest you can get, they will definitely help.
      Reversion begins at the very end of the tail pipe, so the closer you are to the end, the faster your exhaust gas velocity will be (which is good for performance). Having them in the middle will stop the reversion in the middle, which is MUCH Better than not stopping it at all.

    One key things you guys totally missed, bad exhaust gaskets!
    They can cause popping too, say a guy swaps pipes, or suddenly started getting more or less popping. Could be an indicator of a bad exhaust gasket or not getting a complete seal at the head.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 года назад +2

      Man, did that not make the edit? We did talk about it...always check for exhaust leaks...leaks at the gasket or where the mufflers slip on to the headers. Like Drew says, if air is being introduced at either of those places it will change the AFR in the exhaust.
      Great comment! Thank you.

    Question, i started my 07 vstar 650 silverado was sitting in the cool garage for a couple days
    Had to choke it a few times mid and full choke and held the throttle to keep it going then once it was idling on its own I let it warm up for about 10 Minutes I was revving it up and it it would pop out the exhaust when I let off the throttle a blue flame would shoot out a lil bit is that ok ?? Bike runs well and revs up no problem would that maybe be because I had to choke it a bunch ?? Prior to starting it thanks a bunch

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching and the questions.
      We're not familiar with that engine....dunno why you had trouble starting it...could have been very cold, could have been some bad gas...not possible for us to know without being with the bike.
      You might be a bit rich, but a blue flame out open exhaust is not uncommon, and is not indicative of a bad tune.
      I would recommend looking at the Thunder Torque Inserts™ at the following link. It will run stronger, and have a bit deeper exhaust tone.
