    Table saw build series: • How to build a Table S...
    Built a new vertical belt sander station with a tilting table. I've had one with a fixed table for a couple of years and it worked great. But now, for some reason, I wanted the tilting table and since I came up with a neat mechanism I built a new one. I built the new one out of scraps that I had floating around in the workshop. It uses a Makita Belt sander. The table can be tilted up and down using circular guide slots. This lets the table tilt around it's front edge which keeps it right at the sand paper when the tables' tilted.
    Sander: Makita 9404

    Great problem solving, Cosmas. Changing belts easily is indeed a great advantage.

      As far as i'm concerned, it's the breaking point point between a great sander and a bad one. Of course, that may be because i change belts more often, but even so, there are some convoluted and oblique designs out there that just make you scratch your head in wonder at what the design team was thinking.

    Does that Makita belt sander come with those mounting holes, or did you drill and tap them yourself? I have a Porter Cable belt sander that I'd like to use, and it doesn't have mounting holes (for accessories?) on the body of the tool.

    my cheap chinese one keeps breaking belts, so this is a great idea...
    the miter slot might be good if you had a totally perfect filler strip for it with .00000001 clearance and internal screw for hold down when not in use, but another level of complexity, hassle, and possibly ruin perfect surface.

    I know you said a slot might be gimmicky, but i'd still add one. You can make a super cheap slot out of a picture frame (or ad frame in some places) by cutting the face off and leaving the slot channel for the angle connections they use a a slot. It's small, cheap to make and there's a large variety of T-nuts for various applications, as not all such frames are used for pictures, mine for example is a wall mounted formicarium and it came with these tiny T-nuts (ebay) that hold quite a lot of weight.
    You can easily make an angle guide and sled from that.

    Great work designing this system - unique to that sander but ... And, those splits in the plywood from the screws could grow to be a problem but this is not made to be a forever tool. However, the design is amazingly effective.

    • @jameslovering9158
      @jameslovering9158 2 года назад

      Yes good point, to get everything square you need good tools. But I would also add that if you are wanting a belt sander like this then you are quite advanced anyway ?
      It's an additional tool for a workshop thats already established I think.
      The flexibility and uses cases are to enhance projects for steel or wood grinding / sanding.
