While Mr.Brightside has a sort of hopefulness the phrase and tone of the line "Cause I'm Mr. Brightside" feels more like a depressed acceptance that the relationship is over, which is perfect for the story of the song. Some of the best stories end acknowledging where it all began while showing how things have changed. Mr. Brightside acknowledges the heartbreak that engaged at the start of the song and laces it with sad acceptance, giving the listener a one two punch of emotion. If it weren't for this, I don't believe the climax would be as impactful as it's current form and the song may not have been as popular. It gives the song an undertone of denial as the last wails of "I never" belt out over the crashes of the hithat, ending the song with a desperate confusion of why someone would do that, esspecially when he never did anything wrong. The only resort is be "Mr. Brightside" not because you can see the hope for a better relationship but so your not stuck in the depressive pit of 'why'.
Akita Haha. Unless you’re old like me. But I heard it as I was going through a divorce and it became my anthem. And the fact I’m no longer with my ex is the best thing that ever happened to me. I’ve since met the love of my life. ‘Cause I’m Mr. Brightside...
I actually never heard of this song during my middle school. But when I got into college and listened to the song, I instantly felt familiar with it, it's like opening a box full of memory from my middle school days.
I probably heard it a million times growing up but never paid attention to it. I first really paid attention to it my freshmen year of highschool. I rediscovered it about 2 years ago. And I feel sooo much nostalgia from middle school even tho I never heard it in middle school
I disagree with the idea that it's hopeful; I think a big reason it's popular is purely because it's ironically hopeful. I think the whole point of the chorus is Flowers basically laughing away calling himself "Mr. Brightside" when really he's spent the last minute and a half essentially in agony imaging every detail of what his lover did when she cheated on him. Irony and ironic humor is a big part of this generation, I just think they marketed on that.
Brandon Flowers is married to a woman and has three children. Brendon Urie is the lead singer of Panic at the Disco is also married to a woman but came out as pansexual. I’m not sure what you mean honestly.
nivekross ah well other people in this comment section must also be misinformed, i literally read that Brandon Flowers is gay about 8 times before i got to this comment. Mabye it is just wishful thinking.
I agree. Most songs last a few years to a decade or two, but some songs have and always will last decades and potentially centuries (too soon to say with the latter).
@@heckler73 yea it must be a pain in the arse having fans want you to play their favourite song that they idolise and which also brought you your success.
That was their statement but during 'The Way It Was' Brandon was apparently a bit pissed off by the calm crowd (I wasn't there but I heard people about that gig), so at the time we thought that Brandon juste kinda rage quit and didn't perfrom Brightside. If you watch a couple videos from the Day & Age era you can see that he really doesn't like when people are seated or inactive during shows lol (Santa Barbara 2009... classic video). But yeah for sure it's an exception (well I hope), I especially love the 50/50 version they're doing live these days; they're playing the Jacques Lu Cont remix for the first half, then the album version on the second half. It's epic! And props to your video by the way, nice summary of the song's lifetime
Oh yeah he may have been sick, but he had an awful case of the flu in Denver and still gave it his all, and obviously played Mr. Brightside. But we were, if I do say so myself, a great crowd. Cause of that I kind of get why he might have been upset enough not to play it, cause he and the whole band put *everything* into the performance and if the audience doesn't give it back that would be so frustrating. At the same time, if I were in that audience and had been trying to be into it and energetic and they didn't play it because some people had to be assholes I would be pretty mad too
My funeral will have no eulogy or service, just the entire Killers discography played start to finish. I want them dumping my body in the ground to "Bones"
I remember when Hot Fuss first released in the US and everyone was so stoked on "Somebody Told Me", it was on the radio, MTV, and VH1 all the time. But I would listen to the album on my janky oldschool mp3 player, and was wondering why no one was talking about the much better "Mr. Brightside" track. I listened to it over and over. Crazy how Somebody is now rarely referenced and Mr Brightside is still around
Funny cuz growing up I thought 'Somebody' was great and found the lyrics funny but now I can rarely listen to that song all the way through whereas Brightside is on repeat lol
I dig both the tracks. Somebody Told Me has that great slap bass line and is just a fun song. Mr.Brightside has that iconic riff and relatable lyricism. They're both bangers in my opinion
You see, there are “fucking good songs” that haven’t had the effect like mr. brightside has had. Songs that haven’t stayed in the top 100 for this long. I like too think mr. brightside is special too stay there for that long.
but why is it a good song? I've heard people say they fucking love some songs and they don't even know the words, or they only know the chorus. It just makes me wonder why some people like some songs.
I like a lot of Sams town more than bits of Hot Fuss too but hard to say which is better. Sam's town just gets a bit overblown and over ambitious but the best songs on their own are top notch. Sawdust is scattershot. some great songs like Ballad of Valentine. Some obvious b side material.
I love that brandon loves oasis and the strokes, those two plus the killers (along with mcr, who also love oasis) are among my davorite bands of all time.

Because The Killers rule and are one of the most underrated bands of our generation. I don't know why it didn't get more buzz, but Battle Born is one of my favorite albums of the past 20 years.
Underrated??? The Killers fill stadiums. They have headlined at Wembley Stadium and Madison Square Garden. Mr Brightside is downloaded or streamed roughly 25 million times per year. They are arguably the biggest indie-pop-rock band in America and the UK.
Jealousy and love is what everyone experiences so it's so relatable , the iconic intro , the way it all sounds. Helps people get through tough times , that's why it's so timeless even after 10 years
Did anyone else ever feel like the line “cause I am Mr. Brightside” was sarcastic? I have personally always interpreted it that way. Like people are telling him he needs to move on and he’s like “I am not upset about it, I am Mr. Brightside, you get over it.”
@Childhhod toys modifier and to have the world still sing it today. It’s a timeless classic. I can’t help but wonder how she feels or what she thinks when she hears the song.
Just went to look this up; it's currently at week 241 of being in the top 100 Billboard UK charts. At 89th place. In America, they are still in the top 100 artist chart at 91st place. Even on the US billboard chart, the song re-entered the charts in July of this year (2020) and has stayed there for the last several weeks. That is astounding. This song came out when I was 18. I'm 35 now. I've loved it all these years and continue to follow The Killers music career, no matter how much their sound changes, there are still very obvious references both in style and sound that reflect Hot Fuss. It is just a phenomenal album.
King of Degenerates mr. brightside is 3:28 seconds long. 3:28 minute is 228 seconds 228*1000000 (million time) = 228000000 seconds 228000000/3600 = 63333.333 hours of total play A week has (60*24*7)/60 = 168 hours You sir are lying .
Its a sad song masked in a catchy and up beat tune much like a thousand miles. It tricks listeners to a false sense of enjoyment while giving them that sentimental kick in the nuts at the same time. It also doesnt hurt that the guitars and drumming was on point...this song is a masterpiece
TBF emo is still being played. MCR sold out in minutes for their return show tickets. So it's not a coincidence that Mr Brightside is still topping the charts. 'coming out of my cage' is my phrase getting me through lockdown as well as 'We'll carry on' Welcome to the Black Parade, MCR and Florence and the machine, "Dog days are over". Again very iconic songs.
I feel like The killers are strange in the sense that they have great recognition yet they dont get enough attention. Reguardless, The Killers are amazing! i hold them up with other iconic legendary bands! only diffrence is theya re still going strong!
I agree a lot of people only seem to give them praise when it comes to Mr. Brightside or their album hot fuss while their other great songs from their albums like Sam's town, sawdust and day and age aren't talked about a lot
Isaiah G do people like their new stuff tho? I don’t. I absolutely love almost everything they made in their first four albums but battle born and wonderful wonderful are huge disappointments except for run for cover and maybe the man imo
5:07 - You begin talking about /why/ Mr Brightside is still on top of the charts. 6:00 - Content is over This is why I have such a hard time with your channel: you pick topics that are very interesting to me, you do significant, good research, but your videos end up being like maybe an 85-15 split research and conclusion. The conclusion's what I'm watching for, baby! If you only have like, three sentences to say on a subject, I question the necessity of an entire video devoted to them. That said, I generally like you and would like to see you improve. So, uh, that's my thoughts on this.
If any of you ever get the chance to see The Killers live, do it. The energy and the performance they give is once in a life time. The whole crowd erupts with emotion at every song. You can feel the heartbreaks, the optimism, the vigor of youth, the wisdom of age. When Mr. Brightside plays everyone goes berserk. Imagine everyone around you belting the lyrics without care about being off key or looking stupid. It's just a bunch of us getting to share that fleeting genuine moment together in this world where we are so connected yet so distant. I never had a favorite band until I found The Killers.
This song will never get old, it's timeless. Hot Fuss has so many good tracks. The nostalgia and regret of love missed out on represented in "Smile like you mean it" gives me the feels: "And someone is calling my name...from the back of the restaurant, And someone is playing a game...in the house that I grew up in, And someone will drive her around...down the same streets that I did... On the same streets that i did... Smile like you mean it."
The thing about this song is that, even though I'm never in the mood to hear it, I'm never _not_ in the mood to hear it. It just doesn't seem to get old.
Thank you for the 'Heads Up' on Skillshare! and I am one of the people who just discovered The Killers and Mr. Brightside..., from discovering their newer song 'The Man' both are great songs, would never know they are so much apart in time.
The song has a bit of a following in Australia as well. The Killers played a show following a highly televised sporting match here, and one of the members of the winning team sung on stage with Flowers.

"Why is Mr. Brightside still on the charts?"
Because. It's Mr. Brightside. That's simple.
CUZ ITSMR BRIIIIGHTSIDE
Mr. Brightside is the "Africa" of our generation.
“Africa” is very much its own song and meme phenomenon
africa is the africa of our generation.
Ehhh, we'll have to wait like, a decade to see if that's true
only that mr. brightside is not terrible

@@teunwv6868 Damn you
While Mr.Brightside has a sort of hopefulness the phrase and tone of the line "Cause I'm Mr.
Ok
That tends to be the way it is
Cool
Fine logic. Hard to think of it differently now.
Because it’s been on repeat since everyone was in middle school, no matter *when* they were in middle school 😂
Hahahaha
Holy shit. True
Yea nah man I'm usually to plastered to actually interpret the lyrics. I just know that it fucking slaps
I think Mr. Brightside is the Sweaney Todd epiphany moment following the murder theme of the album.
This is pretty accurate. Its basically a 'laugh before you cry' kind of song.
I always took the "Mr. Brightside" thing to be cynical and ironic, not a message of hope for the future.
Yeah, no shit
@@Demon_Cleaner XD

Apparently Brendan is gay. So the girl in the song was "the woman" as opposed to "the other woman" (i thought it was funny)
Brandon Flowers is married to a woman and has three children. Brendon Urie is the lead singer of Panic at the Disco is also married to a woman but came out as pansexual. I’m not sure what you mean honestly.

I agree. Most songs last a few years to a decade or two, but some songs have and always will last decades and potentially centuries (too soon to say with the latter).
That's insanely weird; I was *just* listening to this song when I got the notification for this video.

I never took the tone as being sincerely hopeful - maybe ironically hopeful with the hope of becoming sincere, but not plain sincere
Oddly, this seems dead on accurate and not convoluted at all.
Actually, at a 2018 show in the Netherlands, the Killers did not perform Mr Brightside for the first time
The Irish Yoshi THE NETHERLANDS??? Ik moet terugkomen :/

GOOD FOR THEM...It must drive them fucking nuts to have people constantly expecting them to play that.
@@heckler73 yea it must be a pain in the arse having fans want you to play their favourite song that they idolise and which also brought you your success.
They did play a gig without playing Mr. Brightside. Litteraly one: Amsterdam, Feb. 28, 2018.
You're right! After some more research, Brandon was too ill and didn't perform Mr. Brightside for the first time in their career. I'd riot.
@@Middle8 a lot of disappointment was heard, I was there, it sucked so bad not hearing Mr. Brightside when hearing them live for the first time
That was their statement but during 'The Way It Was' Brandon was apparently a bit pissed off by the calm crowd (I wasn't there but I heard people about that gig), so at the time we thought that Brandon juste kinda rage quit and didn't perfrom Brightside.
At the same time, if I were in that audience and had been trying to be into it and energetic and they didn't play it because some people had to be assholes I would be pretty mad too
I’d requested a refund 😂

Bullshit, there are bands even more underrated than this.
Underrated??? The Killers fill stadiums. They have headlined at Wembley Stadium and Madison Square Garden. Mr Brightside is downloaded or streamed roughly 25 million times per year. They are arguably the biggest indie-pop-rock band in America and the UK.
Oh you're one of those 'generation' dickheads.
Jealousy and love is what everyone experiences so it's so relatable , the iconic intro , the way it all sounds. Helps people get through tough times , that's why it's so timeless even after 10 years

“Sometime during the last 15 years you have probably found your self belting out Mr Brightside”

I never had a favorite band until I found The Killers.
well, my myspace name used to be ms.brightside 🤷🏻♀️
Aww, hello nostalgia!
I was on a walk with my school and me and my friends were belting it out walking through a field, British catholic school life.
Here I'll save you the trouble of going through the video... "Why is Mr.Brightside still on the charts?"
Because it's a good fucking song...that's why
This song has followed me through every cellphone and mp3 I've ever had in my life so far.
This song will never get old, it's timeless.
Hot Fuss has so many good tracks. The nostalgia and regret of love missed out on represented in "Smile like you mean it" gives me the feels:
"And someone is calling my name...from the back of the restaurant,
And someone is playing a game...in the house that I grew up in,
And someone will drive her around...down the same streets that I did...
On the same streets that i did...
Smile like you mean it."
The thing about this song is that, even though I'm never in the mood to hear it, I'm never _not_ in the mood to hear it. It just doesn't seem to get old.
I still think Hot Fuss is one of the best albums of the 2000s. Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, All These Things That I've Done, so many good songs
Volkgiest does a video on Frank Ocean, Polyphonic does a video on the Grateful Dead and Middle 8 doing on the Killers! Today is a good day.
Let’s be honest we all know why it’s in the charts still

I still have no clue why this is still on charts. There are plenty of timeless, legendary songs that don't do as well as this one does
Because charts aren't big enough to fit every timeless and legendary song or an album:) Everything will leave charts eventually to make room for something new. Apart from Dark Side of the Moon apparently, which was still in charts back in 2012 last time I've checked :D Literally immortal.
This is just so _catchy_ though. And it's not mainstream, but it is close enough to be popular.
I was at a concert and in between bands Mr. Brightside played ever so softly on the speakers...the whole crowd started singing. It made my heart happy....The Killers are so amazing!
You know you made something really special when the crowd sings it louder than you.
Ok, so can we get a video on the true champs, the Strokes? Especially on the masterpiece Is This It.
Aran Testa I find t weird that people love is this it so much. I need to listen to t again, I really like is this it (the song ) but the rest of the album isn’t pure gold. I actually liked room on fire better and first impressions of earth even better than that
It feels like I have been sleeping under a rock. This is the first time I have ever heard this song, but it is talked about as being this song that everyone knows from just hearing the intro.
I imagine most people in the comments knows it word for word
Because it’s played at literally every party ever
I've been to more concerts than I can count, but I was front row seeing The Killers at Pemberton in 2016.
It's by far the best experience I've ever had at a live music event.
The opened with Mr. Brighside and hearing 50,000 people chanting the lyrics behind me is something I'll never forget.
The fact that this video came out 5 years ago to talk about how insane it was for it to still be in the charts, and then to realize that it is still on the charts today is wild!
Mr.Brightside is the unofficial national anthem of England.

Not much point in that. It's a very simple song, like most rock music.

Here in 2024 a little update how big this song is herein the UK. Since its release, rhere are only 2 years, when it didnt feature in the Top 100. 2006 and 2011. As of today, October 6th 2024 it has spent 430 weeks in the Top 100, 175 weeks in the Top 75, 7 weeks in the top 40, 1 week in the Top 20 and 1 week in the Top 10 and this year has been in the Top 75 every week so far, except a week in May when it fell to 78.
As a mobile DJ It's my most requested track. 20 years old this year and showing no signs of fading away, certainly not here in Britain.
"they have literally never played a gig without playing mr Brightside" This is not true, i went to see them earlier this year and they did not play it. Pretty disappointing
I don’t remember a world where Mr Brightside wasn’t on the charts
Cos us Brits know good music when we hear it.
Oh yeah? Then how did Supergrass and Robbie Williams become huge in the U.K., while we Americans realize they suck? And why did Zeppelin never become as big in the U.K. as they did in the U.S.?
Bama Bat 84 those are just like two examples my guy lol almost all the iconic musicians come from England. The Beatles, queen, David Bowie, Oasis, Sex Pistols, Elton John, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Who, the clash, the police, blur, etc
@@El1society literally, add the libertines, suede and pulp and you have a list of my favourites.
@@El1society Bro I really wanted to take America's song but damn you got a point 😶
@@bamabat8435 let's be honest, the US is the most self-hating nation for a reason. Every moment of its existence is spent wishing it had stayed under British rule.
Putting the advertisements and such is always best to put at the end of the video. As we are left satisfied and enjoy the ad more. Thank you for being one of the few creators to realise this fact. :)
I think this song is iconic because it quickly brings you into that headspace where you can relate and empathize with the singer. We've all been jealous, upset, in love and heartbroken. The killers sound amazing, too. It just works
