He had better songs. Sorry.
This man literally made this song just for himself, said “fuck it, I’ll make it public”, and it became one of the greatest hits from the whole 2010s decade…if not the greatest hit.
The Chad Gotye.
no it became one of the greatest hits in history
it became *OUR* song
the man of the people
It is by far the greatest hit from the 2010s. I used to hate the song when I was a kid because of how overplayed it was, but after I lost a loved one, it means so much to me.
I specifically remember asking my best friend to help me identify what genre this song was when it first came out. We were both in middle school and just getting into music on any kind of a serious level, and neither one of us knew what to call it. It wasn't loud or energetic enough to be rock. It was too weird to be pop. It certainly wasn't country. It had too much acoustic instrumentation to be electronic. There was no rapping, so it wasn't hip-hop. We had to conclude that this song, despite sounding nothing like anything else we had been told was part of the genre, could only be labeled "alternative."
About 10 years and half of my life as a musician and massive music fan later, and I still think that's the best label you can put on it. What a weird song.
I mean, isn’t the whole point of “Alternative” supposed to be whatever doesn’t fit into any other genres?
I agree with you on the “alternative” category. I believe if it was made into a theatrical play it would be in the category of “Modern Musical.” Yes, I had to look that up. 😂🙃
I had just watched a video that showed how he made the song.
I’ll be happy to find the RUclips link and share it if you’ve never seen it.
My take away from the video was that it was based on Latin sounds of Seville Luiz Bonfá.
Gotye was born in Belgium but grew up in Australia.
He finally found Kimbra for vocals after he had thought the song might not be “meant to be” and I want to say she’s from New Zealand.
It had a lot of backstory to him making the song. It was a journey almost like writing a childish play. But he’s an eccentric dude and kinda narcissistic. I don’t think he likes being in the public eye so he ducked out bc he wasn’t in it for money. He already had money and it wasn’t his driving reason for writing that song. It was more to get even with somebody he used to know. It’s truly artistic…everyone can take away something different from it bc they can pick sides. 🥺😐🙃 Very theatrically dramatized and hits so many people in so many different ways. 💔
Ha that’s so bad ass , it still holds up to that
I put anything inventive but super catchy like that in my favourite genre bucket: alt-pop
LOL when the song came out I was in middle school too. I used to look up "80s song about a breakup"
This is the kind of a song 15 year olds in 2053 are going to listen to and say "I was born in the wrong generation..."
You’re goddamn right

Wow. I was gonna make a joke about "Somebody I used to know" but you're right. It's kind of like the Phantom Pains (Metal Gear). Players had "phantom pains" from the loss of the 3rd chapter and the ending being unfinished, the loss of Silent Hills, the loss of future big-name collaborations between Kojima and major figures in Hollywood or the gaming industry as he took on other Konami franchises. That's not counting the intentional phantom pains, like Quiet's exit after she's become the single most valuable member of your team and her humming in the background is like having a friend with you. A friend that kicks a lot of ass and helps you out better than anyone else.
When I got the feeling that knew him I instantly got the over feeling I didn’t caused by his disappearance in the mist.
He definitely lucked out with Kimbra, their voices work great together
3:24 you really hit the nail on the head there.. It IS a beast of a beat. Who would think african drums and latin drums would flow so smoothly into each other that an ordinary listener would never notice they're there. I didnt at least and this part of the video really struck me.
They flow so smoothly because they actually have a similar origin. Latin music, specially Brazilian, has a big influence in african percussion
Errrr because Latin drums are based off of African drums?
@@antoniocerqueira304 Not exactly, the brazilian percussion patterns are unique, yes, they received influence from Africa but they are not the same. You can go to Africa right now and you'll not find anything similar to Samba, or argentinian Tango, and neither Salsa, the latin rhythms are unique. Moreover in Latin music some of the drum patterns people hear also come from the percussive patterns of native americans and europeans who also played drums and percussive instruments.

This song has really spoken to me on a personal level for the past 4 years. I once has a friend when I was in year 7 (Australia). We were strangers to each other but we shared some classes together. (Elective classes more specifically.) Over the next 5 or 6 months we became incredibly close where at one point we tested the waters on whether or not we could withstand us being together. It didn't end up working out for reasons that I will never know. We mutually talked after that and it was nice because we were still communicating as friends. Then at the beginning of 2018 she moved schools and she never told me. I was caught by surprise and I was a bit upset. I asked her to keep in contact with me and she agreed. She never responded to my messages. During the pandemic I tried to contact her through social media but I don't have her instagram and she removed my number and blocked my snapchat. I know this all started when I was around 13 but now that I'm 17 I can see clearly now. She truly was somebody that I used to know...
...and I won't forget her even if she's forgotten me
Man that's rough. She probably had gone through a lot of changes in her life and her ignoring your messages and blocking your snapchat clearly shows you weren't all that important to her.
Rather than dwell on the fact she moved on and not have contact with you id just focus on the good parts the two of you had in the friendship and let the positive parts of that shape you into the person you are. Her not having you in her life was a choice she made and you shouldn't be wasting your energy on how she doesn't include you into her life. That's on her, not you. People grow apart and don't always remain the same person you used to know them as.
You're still young and coming up in the world, you gotta focus on yourself and to go through your journey alone. And whoever you come across in your life wants to be in your life, they will. And if they also go on to find themselves then let them. Always focus on the positives each person brings into your life. Live your life and don't worry about theirs.
Merry Christmas.
Boy i know someone say person A who loves this person B dearly. But God knows why she has blocked him like every now and then talking about him to us but on the other hand blocked him... Like idk
Hopefully she has obtained a restraining order.
You were friend zoned and she had to move to get space.
I love you kid. It gets less frequent. It will never go away.

I don't usually comment on this type of video, but I wanted to say of all the "about the artist" type videos out there, this is one of the best ones I have watched, especially the way the video side of it was put together. Not just random photos of the artist mixed into the voice over, but an actual video production for it. Nicely done. Going to check out more of your videos just becasue of that.
The rest of the album 'Making Mirrors' that this song was a part of was incredible. But sadly overlooked because this was such a mega hit. Kimbra's work since this has been nothing sort of incredible. 'The Golden Echo' is a modern masterpiece and was ahead of its time and her latest album 'A Reckoning' that has just been released absolutely slaps!
I think Kimbra's voice makes this song. So soft at the start and then erupting into such intensity. Perfect
This song is my candidate for best pop single of the millennium, and it's because there's more than one thing that makes it an incredible record.
Both vocal performances are superb. Kimbra does have that explosive power but they both convey so much emotion. The instrumentation is just perfection, the production is wonderful, the songwriting, structure and lyrics are all immense. It's just all around a masterpiece.
Think their combination is what elevates everything to another level.
@@Nyxtia it's really interesting how almost everybody can agree on this song. I still hear it on a variety of radio stations, even ones that wouldn't dare to touch 2010s pop.
@@eziitis8 I like to rant about how degenerate pop is these days because I am genuinely that annoying guy. But most radio music sucks exactly because all those songwriting elements: musicality, tonality, structure, lyricism, raw vocals, etc. have been watered down into nothingness to appeal to the lowest common denominator. This song proves that there really is still a place for those things within the pop genre, and ironically even the people who do like radio pop will generally admit that this song is special, while most of the songs on the radio today will be forgotten by next week.

shoutout to gotye for making a song because of his passion and not just for money
i think that's exactly the reason he quit doing Gotye. He doesn't want anything to do with the life of a popstar - he for sure isn't one. I listened to his records and I think this guy has some really free way of making music. He is an artist who happened to create a massive hit and I think he didnt fear the popularity but he doesn't want it. Because being popular always comes with a certain pressure and also people who try to tell you what to do with your art. Just look at Julian Casablancas who basically quit doing the strokes for 7 years to do music with a band that lets him be as free and creative as he wants to be - even if that means he only plays in front of like a few hundred people or so and not in big stadiums or arenas.
NoanProduction saw interviews that he wanted to release music last year . He isn’t gone he just doesn’t churn out music for the money. Will not be surprised if we see a new album in the next year or two . He clearly must be a perfectionist who heavily relies on creativity lightbulbs . He might be feeling creative for a while, make a few songs then leave it for year which is probably what’s happening. Hope he comes back soon
I gotta agree, most of his songs are great!!!
NoanProduction His success during making mirrors most likely isn’t the reason he quit. He’s said many times before that the amount of people listening to him doesn’t really matter. He doesn’t care if it’s millions or just a handful of people, he just cares about making music he enjoys making. Wally took time off after Making mirrors to fully focus on his band, The basics. And I think he’s just been taking his time while now having the money and freedom to do what he wants to. He has said quite a few times over the last few years that he’s making a new album, he’s just doing it slowly. :)
Glad you made this. Such a great one hit wonder that deserves a background story.
Damn, the breakdown of both the song and artist's identity makes the whole thing even better, glad I clicked that vid - thanks!

Liked this song when I was in high school and really only identified with the males perspective. Hearing it again as adult and understanding what the woman was talking about chilled me.
That's what it means to grow up, I suppose
Wow!! Chills man… so true about “her side” 💔
the kind of comment I was looking for
Yes. Me too
what does her side mean
What a fantastic breakdown. Thank you for this video. It's like closure to a song that made us move. Fantastic.
It’s not often one finds a fascinating story about catchy, iconic popular music that is related in video so beautifully. Thank you for finding the story and bringing it to RUclips for us to enjoy.
Kimbra's vocals will always be one of the most beautiful features, theres so much emotion it feels personal and thats why i truly fell in love with this song
hey
Yes a great example of acted vocals. A real skill.
they both were fantastic once she sang her feature because he felt disgusted with himself. They also did so well in the video.
Kimbra is excellent at vocals backed by solid production, her other work is also worth exploring
@@Nippontradamus Where do you recommend I should start with her work?
He's an not like anyone who created songs just for money, he's an image of a real artist, What a legend
What a legend alright
the best art is always made this way but true passion and talent are often never together or are destroyed by greed or ambition
b r u h. Artists need to eat as well. Not all of them are privileged enough to be able to not monetize their work. While I understand that creating a piece of art with the sole purpose of making money is pathetic. Creating a piece of art that's good but also has the intention to make money isn't in any way bad and doesn't make the artist any less "real".
@@r.7530 , everyone understands that artists needs to eat and want to have a comfortable life, yet there are plenty of "artists" who release absolute shite knowing that their fans will eat it and they will be another million richer. Unfortunately, most performers who reach world fame end up in that category which is disgusting because they simply work for the money.
@@Flamdring yeah, that I agree with.
Great video and information and great narration. You certainly have the voice. Thanks for this.🙂
Amazing video. Middle 8 just got a subscriber with notification bell
I think Kimbra's verse was fire and totally made the record, it's that interplay and duet that made it so memorable.
Yeah, her part was awesome, and the success of the song helped her become more famous. Kimbra certainly is a unique and interesting artists and one of the most interesting musicians to come from NZ in recent years, way better than the overrated Lorde imho.
I love the build up during her part. From the quite singing to basically yelling.
You forgot to mention he can hit high notes that sounds like Sting.
I literally thought it was a cover of a Sting song or heavily sampled from a Sting song.
@@sc9160 same. When I first heard it I could have sworn it was a cover. The song sounded so familiar.
@@sc9160 IT IS a cover. The original, by Sting, is just organized differently.
It will make even more money if Sting records it! I'd love that.
That amazing
Superb video! Loved the content and animations!!!! Great piece of art! :D
Enjoyed you’re analysis of Gotye very much. He really broke into a new dimension with this song.
This song is popular because everyone has been ghosted by someone. It speaks too your soul
The fact that it's a duet is crushing to me because there's always two or more sides to a story, the deep sigh he takes when Kimbra comes in on the music video.... uhg. Make's me remember all the shit stuff I've put people through too
I havent lol
Not me lol.
She didnt 'ghost' him, they verbally broke up but Gotye wanted to stay friends but she refused, and when he built an attitude towards her refusal she mocked him, not ghosted but partially heartbroken, same difference anyways
He hit it out of the park with Kimbra. I am still listening to her to this day, and her albums are fire.
She gorgeous too.
'Top of the world' is on of my favourite. And 'I'm wishing' too.
Everyone asks "I wonder what Gotye is doing right now" but no one ever cares where Kimbra ended up. It's unfortunate that she couldn't maintain the fame from the song now that she's making some of the most interesting music in pop.
@@kaileewalden3586 True.
Kimbra is so good.
She’s great and underrated
Kimbra's verses last line is really powerful, I still get shivers every single time I hear it
This song will never get old ❤️
GOTYE or as you may know him under his alias, “Game Of The Year Edition”.
Bruh... o.o
lmao
That's good
Yeah i instantly thought this. Not sure if its true but i think of it everytime
Oh my gosh I never thought of that
Wow, blown away with the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star melodic reference.
It's more reminiscent of Baa Baa Black Sheep than Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
@@Loves2smoodge It's actually the Alphabet song
@@Loves2smoodge when it's the same tune-
If they're the same tune you're singing one of them wrong...
Even though it's Baa Baa Black Sheep, which everyone in the damn world realised as soon as this song was released, but ok. Nice clout comment.
Great video, insightful and cinematographic! Very well done and very becoming for the featured artist.
Everyone in the comments is talking about how much they wish he'd make another song and how they miss him and I'm like. Ya'll. He still makes music. He never stopped. You just stopped listening.
Were can i find this music
The guy in the video said he stopped making solo music?
Wait is it on RUclips?
He makes music with a different band now it’s mentioned towards the end of the video
How it is for most of these types of artists, actually. If you remember them, look them up. There's a good chance they are still making music.
What a great breakdown of this song, didn't realize all of the different nuances of what makes it truly a masterpiece!

Excellent video. Thanks for breaking it down.
me: an australian seeing an american mention triple J... Shook.
triple J is bae
I mean they gave us denzel curry covering Ratm and kali uchis covering bjork so you gotta love them
I love checking Triple J for song rankings, they find some good stuff!
Same dude
..., and Julia Jacklin covering Julian Casablancas.
Thank you for talking about Kimbra in this video. I've heard a lot of people discuss this song, but they always seem to refer to her as "the female vocalist" or just don't talk about her at all. So thank you for giving her credit where credit is definitely due.
Yeah strange considering kimbra at this point in her career is the more accomplished artist, take nothing away from gotye but kimbra is prolific.
yes, exactly!!
I always thought she was Katy perry when I was younger lmaoo
Interesting how you revealed the complex nature of this song, I appreciate hearing about it, thanks.
best video analysis on youtube for this amazing song
