You gotta understand Hewllet was a top notch comic artist and while he doesn't do comics anymore he's a ultra respected illustrator. A big part of Gorillaz success is his visuals, but he's usually talked about as an addendum to the band.
I was already a teenager when Gorrilaz formed and loved them, but lost touch a bit over the next two decades. Having children has made me see them in a new way, they connect with young kids like no other band. Just the fact they’re animated draws them in, it has exposed my kids to so many diverse styles of music their age group would never have been into. Makes me wish I’d been a child when I first saw them.
Kinda scary how kids relate better to animations than people. I guess it's not the end of the world of the animations that relate to are as meaningful as Gorillaz tho
I'm a dance teacher and my elementary students love Gorillaz, they learn about rhythms, and music genres, and of course they love watching their videos. It's one of the few bands that I use every year, in every class.
Honestly this was a genius idea. Sucks they probably won't be able to make that movie any time soon though. I've always thought they could make a movie that played out like a chapter in their lore, but we get to see the inbetween bits alongside music videos and shit. Oh well, maybe one day.
@@Middle8 I love Stylo too, but I think you missed the point of The Fall. I get the feeling that unless you've lived where the songs were written, you'll never get the tracks. Amarillo is actually one of their most thoughtful tracks. It feels and sounds like Amarillo on an overcast fall morning, or evening. It's one of the most sung about cities in American music, but is the best representation of it. The only part that doesn't fully work is "I got lost on the highway" as the streets are nothing compared to other cities, but then the whole city feels lost.
Damon took such a huge creative risk and it paid off. The fact that some people who listen to the band don't even remember who he is, also speaks about his humbleness. He's just happy giving hits after hits.
Even though people didn’t really like Humanz, I still consider it to be one of the best things Gorillaz ever produced. For me, the collaborations don’t really overashadow Damon, in this case, we can see a perfect symbiosis between guests and Albarn. I really enjoy its vibe, the album feels like a complete creation, a perfect building, in which you can’t really take any bricks out, as it will fall apart. In the end, Humanz is everything Gorillaz is all about: mixing different genres, doing something unusual and making it sound fantastic.
i enjoyed humanz waayy more than i thought i would. i enjoyed how they kept their political undertones and overtones, and i really enjoyed every single collaboration bc they all brought something new to the table. its a real gem that people brush over
@@ef1913 i think that the amount of collaborations add to its charm! gorillaz has always been an ongoing project and i truly adore the uniqueness and typical raw edge of the different artists that amalgamate into a cohesive sounding album
YES it gets way too much band-wagon hate as I would call it. It’s a special album to me because from the very first time I heard it in full, knowing the general idea of the themes it was trying to tell, along with the song visualizers and everything combined to make such a clear picture of the non-existent movie to go along with the album. It truly brings you in and immerses you to the point I can imagine each and every song’s location and story as the band is traveling to and then going up a skyscraper full of end of the world parties on each floor like Damon mentioned was the idea for the record in some interviews. Including the Deluxe bonus tracks! That continues the story and theme into an Epilogue of sorts. Though it’s still not my favorite of their albums overall it’s the only one that created such a clear picture of the story for me to follow along like that, of any album really!
@@RefMr the idea of an end of the world party was honestly so freaking cool, and i adore the pure story telling of each song. i 100000% agree with you on the band-wagon hate, it truly does get too much hate, and i think its because people were expecting an album full of "feel good inc."s, "clint eastwood"'s and "rhinestone eyes"'s, rather than examining and understanding that past gorillaz albums were all a bit different in their own rights, and that this album was no different. its unique sound and the visualisers, as well as the music videos tie together to form a trippy, apocalyptic mood that sets the tone for the time period and year it was released. i love that in the albums, they included the little interludes that were also present in plastic beach, and to me it felt like the "in between" floors, changing directions and getting closer to the end, and i *love* it
Gorillaz was formed before i was even born. My parents loved it. I love it. It is always going to be on the top of my list. The other day, I was listeneing to Rhinestone Eyes out loud and my father heard and he told how a whole generation was their fan. He even showed his picture from his Gorillaz era and coincidently, thats how he imressed my mom lmaoo.
I’m 38 I am a Gorrillas fan but my Ex from that time hated them he only listened to like underground gangster type rap he made fun of me mercilessly. That’s cool your parents bonded over thier music. All my friends only listened to rap and they all thought I was a weirdo for listening to rock and Indy but I always stayed true to what I liked I never listened to rap that much unless it was something like Gorillas but I took a lot of flack for it from the people of my generation.
I’ve seen a lot of “Gorillaz summary” videos and this ranks among the best. It’s direct and succinct without cutting out or watering down some important things. Well done. Very well done.
I must be the biggest fan of The Fall. I love Damian’s take on an ambient album and find many of the songs quite beautiful. I find myself singing “California and the Slipping of the Sun” frequently. I think the audio recordings and songwriting style capture rural America well too, which isn’t seen often.

@Neginegikun I'm trying plastic Beach with a more open mind. It's not as good as demon days but they are both so radically different you cannot compare them. I think that was my big problem
I remember first hearing Feel Good Inc in middle school on the local radio. I was obsessed and Demon Days was the first physical album I ever owned. Crazy that after all these years they are still producing fresh music that manages to capture that wonder I had.
I love that the characters were kept, because the music changes every song 2D, Noodle, Murdoc and Russel keep the familiarity aspect and we can love them as individuals.
Reality is Damon is the most real artist there is. NEVER lip-syncs, sounds just as good if not better live and even slightly alters ewrlch performance to prove and demonstrate live singing. Absolute respect for Damon.
I saw Gorillaz last fall and it's one of my top favorite concerts I've been to. It was a long show but they played a great mix of old and new. Everyone was dancing and singing the entire time. I loved it! If you get a chance to see them live, do it!
Finally saw them live in Dublin last year and they blew my mind. 20 people on stage, 3 massive cinema screens doing insane videos and lore as well as phenomenal energy from the 'band'. Almost 3 hours of pure musical bliss
Demon Days was one of the first albums i ever owned and was literally life changing. It set me on the varied and diverse mix of music that i'm into now
Definitely my favorite band. No matter what they post no matter a rap or rock cover, it’s got groove and funk in each entry and I can vibe with each one
How can ppl think the animation is the least interesting?? The animated aspect and lore is what got me into them so much in the first place! I think the animation and characters are the most interesting part about them
Gorillaz is such a unique group, and they do it very, very well. I've been a fan since their first album dropped and saw them live for the first time last year, needless to say, I was not disappointed! They have their own style, but it encompasses every style out there. I think it also says a lot to have someone like Stevie Nix do your backup vocals 🤭
They're absolutely a real band with a rotating roster and animated visual representation. Still, there's a group of real people performing together to make that music

What a change in music style and delivery on the part of Damon. Really interesting to switch genre’s in a drastic way like that.
I can confidently say that Plastic Beach is one of the most ambitious and significant releases of the 21st century. A vital checkpoint in music history, and pop culture. UPDATE: just bought it on vinyl today, and met someone whose brother plays live with gorillaz on backup vocals. The 6 connection rule is real. Literally, Me > My friend who works at the store > A customer at the store who I became friends with > his brother > Damon Albarn. My conclusion is that the world can be a small place. Today was the most Gorillaz day ever.
When you're basically not a real band but also the most successful and longest running art project ever to exist. Extremely unique while maintaining a high level of output.
Thank you for another amazing video! I knew when I clicked here I would hear a concise and informative history of one of my favorite "bands", I recommend that you give The Now Now another patient listen. Its an album that I keep returning to, because of its chill second half which is perfect for relaxing and zoning out. Kansas, Idaho and Magic City are all mellow bangers. I'm not sure why this album was slept on, but its every bit as good as anything that they've (he's) ever done. I think that the lesser amount of features on this album led people to skim through it, but to me it just proves that Damon can make great music with or without other talented artists that he wants to work with. Also, the new album is absolute fire, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Have a good one!
Damon is a absolute geneus i could care less what people think and together with Jamie's Art style and visuals makes them together a Super force of imagination and purely Original it doesn't matter what set genre you claim to enjoy over another at the end of the day Gorillaz seems to have somthing for you and has also expanded your music library to genre's you would have never thought of ever experiencing. My 3 year old is absolutely hypnotized by the music videos and he loves the music attached to them. Gorillaz are just unstoppable and I am always looking forward to what comes next
Enjoyed the video, but I couldn't help but notice that quite a few British Gorillaz collaborators didn't get a mention. So, fellow countrymen, take a bow: Johnny Dankworth, Shaun Ryder, Roots Manuva, Bashy, Kano, Gruff Rhys, Mark.E.Smith, Noel Gallagher, Benjamin Clementine and Skepta.
I'm crying 😭 All my life I thought the Gorillaz members were real and just wanted to show up in cartoon form because they want to protect their privacy
I have loved gorillaz since clint Eastwood. Absolute genius band. I do feel that you've missed out on the other virtual bands though, especially the rise of vocaloids. Would love to see you do a video on then next
I’ve recently become a fan of Gorillaz. Before I couldn’t really say I was a huge fan before because I had only listened to 1 or 2 of their songs before but now, I’ve started to listen to wayyy more of their songs and I have to say, it’s amazing. Genuinely. It’s so cool on how they have so many different types of music but are still Gorillaz. I am so glad I’m listening to them, anyone who isn’t is missing out. Forgot to mention this, but I also really love on how each band member has their own personality. I think 2D and Noodle are my favourites but I still like them all.
I saw them live back in October and it was so fucking fun and at times even sweet and made me choke up because of my love for every artist working to make this happen for 20 years
I tried to explain this to my friends like 15 years ago how this band was basically an animated cartoon band and the human musicians that play their live shows are the guys doing the soundtrack of the Gorillaz movies. Kind of how Pink Floyd is technically the surrogate band that made the soundtrack to The Wall. They were like "what?" until there was that falling out between Damon and the graphic artist after Plastic Beach that led him to do Everyday Robots and reunite with Blur during the hiatus. Then it became obvious that yeah, Gorillaz IS the cartoon band. There is NO Gorillaz without the animations and videos.
I think one of the most interesting things about Gorillaz is that even if they're not quote on quote a "real band" and even if their music pulls from a bunch of different genres, I feel like I can almost always recognize their songs. There is clearly a unified and consistent vision amongst all that variance and flexibility they've built for themselves.
Gorillaz is one of my first memories of music when I was younger, alongside Daft Punk. They are innovative, evolutionary and stay true to themselves - a not-give-a-fuck, do-what-I-want attitude. Safe to say they keep breaking boundaries, to this day, and I will be here for the next time they break another boundary again.
I still think the problem with Humanz and The Now Now is the amount of filler songs. If the best of both records had been one solid album, it would've been a fantastic comeback and return to form a la Plastic Beach. I mean, Saturnz Bars, Andromeda, Tranz and Hollywood for example are great songs.
Gorillaz first album came out when I was in 3rd Grade, Demon Days when I was in Middle School, and Plastic Beach came out the year I graduated High School.
Every weekend at work I blast the entirety of their first two albums on our stereo. They have a little bit of something for everyone in their music. I've done this for over a year now with absolutely no complaints from my coworkers.
Clint Eastwood is one of my favorite songs since like 20 years, I remember seeing it the first time on MTV as a kid and I just thought it was the greatest thing ever.
I feel similar, except I am more of a "They peaked at Demon Days", where as Plastic Beach was absolutely the last time they made music that I was like " I dig me some Gorillaz" right up until Crack Island, it's the first album in a decade and a half where I am really feeling it and back into the band.
Plastic beach is great but Humanz is such a well-rounded album. Out of the hundreds of tracks I listen to every week, I think of one track out of the album at least once. I even catch myself humming the lyrics of tracks I didn’t immediately like almost everyday. Very few songs stick with me that long.
How do you take a virtual live and stay true to form? Simple! You take the musicians who recorded the music and form a cover band with the cover not being the music, but the band members themselves!
[S] Plastic Beach, Gorillaz [A] Demon Days [B] Song Machine [C] Cracker Island, The Now Now [D] The Fall, Humanz [E] [F] What a unique band! Crazy good for 2 decades now! Thank you Damon, Jamie, and all the collaborators
Gorillaz is in my top 3 favorite bands of all time. I recently got to see them live and it was easily the best concert I’ve ever seen. They are truly one of the greatest bands of all time Damon and Jamie are geniuses and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Gorillaz making their own Tenacious-D-like movie + OST combination would have been killer. Maybe someday, yeah..!
No, they can make their movie. Just not with Netflix. Netflix is brain dead on choosing what stays and goes.
Holy crap, it’s you unorthodox
I blasted “Stylo” when I got my first sports car. It’s still an indescribable feeling to this day speeding down the highway with that song!
My go-to driving track. It’s so badass.
It’s my phone ringtone lol

@@Middle8 I love Stylo too, but I think you missed the point of The Fall. I get the feeling that unless you've lived where the songs were written, you'll never get the tracks. Amarillo is actually one of their most thoughtful tracks. It feels and sounds like Amarillo on an overcast fall morning, or evening. It's one of the most sung about cities in American music, but is the best representation of it.
The only part that doesn't fully work is "I got lost on the highway" as the streets are nothing compared to other cities, but then the whole city feels lost.
Seeing gorillaz live was so damn euphoric
My favorite band of all time, saw them live a couple of months ago one of the best experiences I've ever had
Thats great brother
I am so jelaous of you
Brooklyn? Damon wore a spider-man mask through a huge chunk of the set 🤣
@@finchcarvingadiamond nah LA hahaha
Sorry mate to destroy your dream but Gorillaz does not exit in this world. Is FICTIONAL band
In the end, Humanz is everything Gorillaz is all about: mixing different genres, doing something unusual and making it sound fantastic.
i enjoyed humanz waayy more than i thought i would. i enjoyed how they kept their political undertones and overtones, and i really enjoyed every single collaboration bc they all brought something new to the table. its a real gem that people brush over
@@neitherpoet absolutely agree! Humanz has its distinct sound and it is amazing!
@@RefMr the idea of an end of the world party was honestly so freaking cool, and i adore the pure story telling of each song.
i 100000% agree with you on the band-wagon hate, it truly does get too much hate, and i think its because people were expecting an album full of "feel good inc."s, "clint eastwood"'s and "rhinestone eyes"'s, rather than examining and understanding that past gorillaz albums were all a bit different in their own rights, and that this album was no different. its unique sound and the visualisers, as well as the music videos tie together to form a trippy, apocalyptic mood that sets the tone for the time period and year it was released.
i love that in the albums, they included the little interludes that were also present in plastic beach, and to me it felt like the "in between" floors, changing directions and getting closer to the end, and i *love* it
"On Melancholy Hill" will always be a favorite of mine. It played at the right time and right place and I'll never forget it.
I had NO idea that Dan the automator produced the debut album. Makes total sense. Del tha Funkee Homosapien is one of my favorite rappers ever

Thanks for making me feel ancient 😆
Dozens of songs are about Amarillo, yet the Gorillaz spent a night or 3 there and represented it best.
you get it
Gorillaz will forever be a favorite just for Plastic Beach alone, never mind their other albums.
Plastic beach is a flawless album aha
I want to like it but man it's just not for me. I really like demon days

I consider Damon to be one of most creative musicians of our times, his solo stuff is also great. A true genius.

That first album changed my whole life. I didn't even KNOW you could make music like that. A zombie hip-hop punk rock dance party, wtf?

Demon Days was one of the first albums i ever owned and was literally life changing. It set me on the varied and diverse mix of music that i'm into now
Definitely my favorite band. No matter what they post no matter a rap or rock cover, it’s got groove and funk in each entry and I can vibe with each one
"What genre of music is Gorillaz?"
"Yes"
How can ppl think the animation is the least interesting?? The animated aspect and lore is what got me into them so much in the first place! I think the animation and characters are the most interesting part about them
Gorillaz is such a unique group, and they do it very, very well. I've been a fan since their first album dropped and saw them live for the first time last year, needless to say, I was not disappointed! They have their own style, but it encompasses every style out there. I think it also says a lot to have someone like Stevie Nix do your backup vocals 🤭
They have the most solid collabs it’s absolutely insane. Plus Blur is great.
They're absolutely a real band with a rotating roster and animated visual representation. Still, there's a group of real people performing together to make that music
You should do a video on the group "i DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME" they have an interesting story to tell
Great job on the video but I just wanna announce, I just got the DOOM reference when he says “My guess yes you can like “can I kick it” wit it”
R.I.P Villain
My favorite song by them is more of a story, Fire Coming out of the Monkeys Head. It's so hauntingly beautiful to listen to.
Damon Albarn. Being a Oasis fan there was little feud between blur so we’d talk shit on blur stupid hard. The homie was playin blur the other day we kept with the tradition then the homie busted out you know the lead singer of blur is the same dude in gorillaz.😂😂🤣🤣🤣 we were so blown away. What a change in music style and delivery on the part of Damon. Really interesting to switch genre’s in a drastic way like that.
The first two albums are just incredible to me. So strange and yet so successful. If only more popular music could be like that...
The gorillaz are like real gorilla's, you just love watching them, the difference being one is fake and makes amazing music like tomorrow comes today
Incredible video. Demon Days and Plastic Beach are borderline perfect to me
I can confidently say that Plastic Beach is one of the most ambitious and significant releases of the 21st century. A vital checkpoint in music history, and pop culture.
UPDATE: just bought it on vinyl today, and met someone whose brother plays live with gorillaz on backup vocals. The 6 connection rule is real. Literally,
Me > My friend who works at the store > A customer at the store who I became friends with > his brother > Damon Albarn.
My conclusion is that the world can be a small place. Today was the most Gorillaz day ever.
Tis the smoothest transition to a promo I’ve seen so far, and at the end of the vid instead of beginning or very annoyingly midway through. Mad props
When you're basically not a real band but also the most successful and longest running art project ever to exist. Extremely unique while maintaining a high level of output.
its so funny how oh yeah mister krabs is sampled in "Ascension" 😭😭
Gorillaz are just unstoppable and I am always looking forward to what comes next
empire ants may be one of the best songs to ever be released
They are the Cartoon Vurtral Band of the 2000s and beyond. Gorillaz are that Amazing.
You forgot to note that Cracker Island features Thundercat on bass and backup vocals
So happy to see you're making more videos on my favourite bands!
This band is not real is fictional It doesnt exist
I remember seeing them at the Barclays Center in 2018. One of the best days of my entire life.
I love the art of the band as it gives off a more mature version to those cartoon shows that most people watch as a kid.
I'm crying 😭 All my life I thought the Gorillaz members were real and just wanted to show up in cartoon form because they want to protect their privacy
The Now Now is underrated in my opinion, although that may be because I latched onto it during the first summer of the pandemic.
Lake Zurich is the peak of summer music
I didn't know people disliked the visual element of them being animated, that's a massive part of the vehicle the music is carried through.
I saw you listening to Gorillaz on Spotify and immediately knew what was coming. Thanks so much for this content
I saw them live back in October and it was so fucking fun and at times even sweet and made me choke up because of my love for every artist working to make this happen for 20 years
Oil is my favorite track off the new album
Gorillaz and Tame Impala is just un amazing combination
I think one of the most interesting things about Gorillaz is that even if they're not quote on quote a "real band" and even if their music pulls from a bunch of different genres, I feel like I can almost always recognize their songs. There is clearly a unified and consistent vision amongst all that variance and flexibility they've built for themselves.
Gorillaz is one of my first memories of music when I was younger, alongside Daft Punk. They are innovative, evolutionary and stay true to themselves - a not-give-a-fuck, do-what-I-want attitude. Safe to say they keep breaking boundaries, to this day, and I will be here for the next time they break another boundary again.
while english resources may be difficult for research, Japanese visual-kei airband Golden Bomber are a fun example of bands that aren't bands.
I overlooked Humanz when it first came out, but I find myself going back to it more then any other album
I’ll never forget being about 6-7 years old and DARE was the first song I ever really fell in love with
I feel The Now Now is severely underrated. Loads of greats tracks
Can't believe we all Mandela effected Gorillaz into existence
How to create a rock band that not exist like GORILLAZ is fictive i believe in Mandela effect

Never was the same for me after Plastic Beach, but this band will always have a special place in my heart
To each their own. I feel the same happy feely when they release new music as I did during Plastic Beach
I feel similar, except I am more of a "They peaked at Demon Days", where as Plastic Beach was absolutely the last time they made music that I was like " I dig me some Gorillaz" right up until Crack Island, it's the first album in a decade and a half where I am really feeling it and back into the band.
@@princeblackelf4265 yeah for me the lowered a little bit with PB too. Demon Days was their peak!

G-Sides and D-Sides are essentially bonus tracks from the first Gorillaz album (G) and Demon Days (D) and were recorded at the same time as them with several released before hand, they weren't really made to be Albums but more of compilations of songs that didn't quite make the cut and don't necessarily need a mention. Think of them more as a extra disc to those albums, still great regardless.
