It's a minor quibble, but I gotta disagree with you on your point about the song not being problematic for anyone. A central lyric ambiguously encourages the listener fill in the rhyming blanks with the word "dick." Not at all an issue for me, in fact I think it's one of the many incredibly clever things about this song that makes it so appealing, but it could certainly be problematic for some: "Now they're going to bed And my stomach is sick And it's all in my head But she's touching his chest now He takes off her dress now Let me go..."

i went to their concert in bangkok last year. they came out about 40 minutes late for whatever reasons. but the first song they played was Mr. bright side and the whole arena just went crazyyy

Their first 5 studio albums were Number 1 here whereas in the USA only their latest (5th) album reached number 1. Also their influences for HF were almost exclusively British so in a way you could say the band is British. :)

I remember our CEO was giving his speech during our company's year-end party and this song crept on the background. And yep, he stopped his speech and sang along to the song as someone turned up the volume a bit then we all sang along. Afterwards, he continued with his great speech. It was so fun.
I would consider Mr. Brightside and Welcome to the Black Parade as the two millennial anthems. As soon as you here those first notes, you know you’re all in.
Mr. Brightside is a gateway song to the Killers sound. The more songs you listen to by them, you more you realize it is no where near their best one. This makes them the most precious diamond of a rock band ever.
Fun fact: Brandon Flowers mentions in an interview that when he had only ever heard the song with a guitar because they didn't have a drummer yet. So since it was just the two of them he didn't feel any need to write a second verse for them to practice it. He intended to eventually but when he finally heard the song with a drummer. He got chills and didn't want to change anything. So he just kept the verse the same.
One thing I’d love to point out, is the fact how well “Hot Fuss” has aged in general. “All The Things That I’ve Done” sounds like a song that would come out in 2012-13, but the fact that it’s over a decade old makes it even more fascinating in general and further proves that this album is a timeless classic.

For me that was a cheap marketing strategy that felt like a lack of respect... Trying to associate such an anthem to that cheese ballad, Dustland Fairy Tail wanna be. Actually the whole Battle Born ruined the Killers for me, for good.
Eden Lul Definitely listen to the whole Battle Born album, it’s great. Not everything has to be so deep. It’s not a cheap marketing strategy it’s just a fun album with great songs by a great band.

Iconic, sure, but far too long for regular play in the time it was released, which is why the people who genuinely grew up with it were usually already Queen fans who bought the album. Not nearly as iconic in nature, nor as accessible to its target audience.
I'm chuckling at the fact that "15 years!" sounds amazing to the narrator. Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' *album* charted for 937 weeks. There are songs far more timeless than Mr Brightside that are so fundamental to the idiom of Western music that they've charted repeatedly over decades and been covered or sampled hundreds of times. A great recent example is 'The Sound of Silence' which has been a cornerstone of Western music since it was released 55 years ago and charted yet again when Disturbed recently did an amazing cover of it. The best part of this is that with a little luck, the narrator is on the verge of discovering decades of amazing music that he's apparently not encountered yet.

He's examining how a singular record became the longest-charting single in world history, and postpones a couple reasons why this might be. Stop showing up just to bring up another, unrelated song that does not share that distinction, as soon as another song charts for 15 consecutive years without dropping off the chart for even a single week, we can compare that to Brightside.
The 3 songs that havent lost the magic for me are Mr. Bright, Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, and Smile Like You Mean It (all by the killers). I always end up crawling back to them with a stronger love each time.
One thing that always caught my ear with this song was playing against expectations in the middle of a very catchy song. The shift in not rhyming ‘sick’ with what I expected (touching his...CHEST now) while simultaneously shifting into the bridge was brilliant. Always thought that was one of the cleverer pieces of this song. Not sure if it was intended that way, but was one of the best examples I can think of in playing against type and expectations musically, making it really memorable.
i remember this one time i heard this song come over the radio in a store, and as i was walking down the aisles singing the song to myself, almost every person i walked past was singing it or humming parts of it to themselves as well. this song somehow has this magic around it that just makes it unable to be disliked. it may not be someone's taste in music, but i have some friends that hate this kind of music yet still know every lyric to this song and sing along with it everytime someone puts it on. i dont think this song will ever truly die out because somewhere down the line our music will become someone else's "classic" and breathe a new life into this song.
bohemian rhapsody and mr brightside are just the two anthems of humanity and you CAN’T say otherwise. EVERYONE knows those songs , they can play it anywhere and you’ll have AT LEAST one person singing to it. like i don’t even remember learning the lyrics of mr brightside or bohemian rhapsody, it’s almost like your born knowing the lyrics of those songs
I’ll always remember making my way through the crowd to the main stage at Bonnaroo to see the Killers. When all of the sudden they play Mr. Brightside right off the bat while a large portion of the crowd is still making their way over. Everyone starts running and singing their way quickly to the stage and the crowd is full of energy! I danced my way from one side of the field to the other to meet up with my group. All along the way was nothing but smiling faces and dancing people. Ahh just a happy lil memory.
This and Total Eclipse of the Heart are the only songs I could sing the entirety of. Mr. Brightside came to me at a perfect time and it is super god damn relateable. Good video.

I went to a karaoke bar in Kyoto, Japan for the first time just this year and man, it wasn’t even midnight yet and I already heard three different people play the song. It was insane and now I can’t get if off my head. It was okay in the aughts, it was my favorite song (maybe most) but no other people were really were into the killers that time. (At least not in a mainstream kind of way in my country)
I went to a Mat Kearney concert a while back with another band opening for him. In between that first band and Mat Kearney there was some down time as they were getting their equipment ready. The venue dj put on some music in the mean time when Mr. Brightside came on. Everyone immediately started cheering and singing along. I was there with some friends and honestly, singing along to Mr. Brightside with them was one of the major points of the night. This song is amazing and I don't think it'll stop being so any time soon.

I've loved each and every album that The Killers have released since my earliest days and seeing more people have an interest in this song, delve deeper into their music makes me happy. I don't understand why, it just does.

I think the fact that it's not absolutely overplayed helps out too. I've never been to a party or concert or anything where this song was ever played more then once and that helps. A lot of great music get's bad or is even hated from the beginning just because it's overplayed in the radio or at parties.

Another reason I feel this anthem remains so relevant to this day is because, sonically, it hits that sweet spot between 80s new wave nostalgia, 00s alternative at the time of its release AND signalled the electropop wave to follow in the same breath. Listeners who grew up on bands like The Cars, Duran Duran, Echo and the Bunnyman and New Order could easily get behind them at a time nu-metal was phasing out of alternative rock playlists in favor of more of a garden variety of guitar-driven acts. At the same time, though, many acts like them emerging at the time still had a modern polish without sounding overproduced: thus avoiding being tagged with the nostalgia band tag like Wolfmother and Jet did. Finally: many of the tracks off of "Hot Fuss" (including "Mr. Brightside") had percussive elements nodding to four-on-the-floor sensibilities that could effortlessly be remixed by DJs and retooled for the rave and festival scenes: also foreshadowing the emergence of EDM that would also impact alternative radio via an indie electropop boom. "Mr. Brightside" was at a stylistic crossroads at the time of its release: but appealed to all these different factions of listeners because it had features that spoke to each of them without sounding compromised. It sounded like a genuine fusion.
From one of the first mixtapes I've ever gotten to karaoke every Tuesday to turning the radio up in the car every time this song plays until my very funeral. This is the anthem of my life.
So we were kids/teens and we loved it then but now in our 30s, many have us can relate to it. The beat also goes with the grieve and our attemps to look at the bright side. Plus the opening "I am coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine" that catches you.

Sams town got me seven years ago haven’t stopped listening to it since. Watched Royal Albert Hall three years later and I only fell in love with this band more. Four more years I see them live for the first time and it was my favorite show ever because I knew every word to every song they played. The Killers are forever.
I mean, for the memeability part, I'd argue it's the other way around, it's because it's such a shared common link everyone kind of already knows that it's so good for memes, I mean memes reappropriate common references to frame them in a funny way, I don't think the popularity resulted of the memes about it.
It’s not even like everyone is going to experience a break up like this song. The song talks about heartbreak and everything breaking apart when you want it to keep it together. If you are a living human being you feel emotion when you hear “I just can’t look, it’s killing me”. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in a break up that was hard. The song acknowledges lack of control and heartbreak and we’re all going to feel that at some point. And ALSO it’s emotional because everyone knows this song. If you sing it - it connects you to others. That’s effective. I just typed “GL” and the second provided auto fill that showed up was “GLASTONBURY 2019 MR BRIGHTSIDE”.
Brandon Flowers is like Tom Petty - they just write nothing but great songs with an earthy earnestness that yet emanates ethereal evanescence and therefore resonates specificity while remaining relevant to idiosyncratic interpretation.

I heard this song for first time today while I was at work today. Turns out I heard it before all the way back when I was 12. Im 22 now and hearing it for the first time in 12 years pulled it from from the darkest depths of my memory. Amazing.
15 years later, I heard that song while I was in a club in Auckland(in one of my trips), and I couldn’t believe what was happening in the club, people got crazy and I was dancing and enjoying it like in the old times. What a night! What a memories!

Eden Lul Definitely listen to the whole Battle Born album, it’s great. Not everything has to be so deep. It’s not a cheap marketing strategy it’s just a fun album with great songs by a great band.
I love The Killers. I wish people knew more than just Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. Hot Fuss isn't their only album.

Iconic, sure, but far too long for regular play in the time it was released, which is why the people who genuinely grew up with it were usually already Queen fans who bought the album. Not nearly as iconic in nature, nor as accessible to its target audience.
I'm chuckling at the fact that "15 years!" sounds amazing to the narrator. Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' *album* charted for 937 weeks. There are songs far more timeless than Mr Brightside that are so fundamental to the idiom of Western music that they've charted repeatedly over decades and been covered or sampled hundreds of times. A great recent example is 'The Sound of Silence' which has been a cornerstone of Western music since it was released 55 years ago and charted yet again when Disturbed recently did an amazing cover of it.
The best part of this is that with a little luck, the narrator is on the verge of discovering decades of amazing music that he's apparently not encountered yet.

One thing that always caught my ear with this song was playing against expectations in the middle of a very catchy song. The shift in not rhyming ‘sick’ with what I expected (touching his...CHEST now) while simultaneously shifting into the bridge was brilliant. Always thought that was one of the cleverer pieces of this song. Not sure if it was intended that way, but was one of the best examples I can think of in playing against type and expectations musically, making it really memorable.

i remember this one time i heard this song come over the radio in a store, and as i was walking down the aisles singing the song to myself, almost every person i walked past was singing it or humming parts of it to themselves as well. this song somehow has this magic around it that just makes it unable to be disliked. it may not be someone's taste in music, but i have some friends that hate this kind of music yet still know every lyric to this song and sing along with it everytime someone puts it on. i dont think this song will ever truly die out because somewhere down the line our music will become someone else's "classic" and breathe a new life into this song.

bohemian rhapsody and mr brightside are just the two anthems of humanity and you CAN’T say otherwise. EVERYONE knows those songs , they can play it anywhere and you’ll have AT LEAST one person singing to it. like i don’t even remember learning the lyrics of mr brightside or bohemian rhapsody, it’s almost like your born knowing the lyrics of those songs
I’ll always remember making my way through the crowd to the main stage at Bonnaroo to see the Killers. When all of the sudden they play Mr. Brightside right off the bat while a large portion of the crowd is still making their way over. Everyone starts running and singing their way quickly to the stage and the crowd is full of energy! I danced my way from one side of the field to the other to meet up with my group. All along the way was nothing but smiling faces and dancing people. Ahh just a happy lil memory.
That guitar riff is magical and it grabs your attention quickly. It’s catchy yet unique.
This and Total Eclipse of the Heart are the only songs I could sing the entirety of. Mr. Brightside came to me at a perfect time and it is super god damn relateable. Good video.

I went to a karaoke bar in Kyoto, Japan for the first time just this year and man, it wasn’t even midnight yet and I already heard three different people play the song. It was insane and now I can’t get if off my head. It was okay in the aughts, it was my favorite song (maybe most) but no other people were really were into the killers that time. (At least not in a mainstream kind of way in my country)

I went to a Mat Kearney concert a while back with another band opening for him. In between that first band and Mat Kearney there was some down time as they were getting their equipment ready. The venue dj put on some music in the mean time when Mr. Brightside came on. Everyone immediately started cheering and singing along. I was there with some friends and honestly, singing along to Mr. Brightside with them was one of the major points of the night. This song is amazing and I don't think it'll stop being so any time soon.

This was the one rock (and basically only non edm) song played at my prom this past year. Most kids my age don't listen to rock music at all, besides this song
Fun Fact. In 2010 Killers played at the Shorline Amphitheatre. I was 17 and it was my first concert.
I think the fact that it's not absolutely overplayed helps out too.
I've never been to a party or concert or anything where this song was ever played more then once and that helps.
A lot of great music get's bad or is even hated from the beginning just because it's overplayed in the radio or at parties.

Another reason I feel this anthem remains so relevant to this day is because, sonically, it hits that sweet spot between 80s new wave nostalgia, 00s alternative at the time of its release AND signalled the electropop wave to follow in the same breath.
Listeners who grew up on bands like The Cars, Duran Duran, Echo and the Bunnyman and New Order could easily get behind them at a time nu-metal was phasing out of alternative rock playlists in favor of more of a garden variety of guitar-driven acts. At the same time, though, many acts like them emerging at the time still had a modern polish without sounding overproduced: thus avoiding being tagged with the nostalgia band tag like Wolfmother and Jet did. Finally: many of the tracks off of "Hot Fuss" (including "Mr. Brightside") had percussive elements nodding to four-on-the-floor sensibilities that could effortlessly be remixed by DJs and retooled for the rave and festival scenes: also foreshadowing the emergence of EDM that would also impact alternative radio via an indie electropop boom.
"Mr. Brightside" was at a stylistic crossroads at the time of its release: but appealed to all these different factions of listeners because it had features that spoke to each of them without sounding compromised. It sounded like a genuine fusion.

Sams town got me seven years ago haven’t stopped listening to it since. Watched Royal Albert Hall three years later and I only fell in love with this band more. Four more years I see them live for the first time and it was my favorite show ever because I knew every word to every song they played. The Killers are forever.
I mean, for the memeability part, I'd argue it's the other way around, it's because it's such a shared common link everyone kind of already knows that it's so good for memes, I mean memes reappropriate common references to frame them in a funny way, I don't think the popularity resulted of the memes about it.
It’s not even like everyone is going to experience a break up like this song. The song talks about heartbreak and everything breaking apart when you want it to keep it together. If you are a living human being you feel emotion when you hear “I just can’t look, it’s killing me”. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in a break up that was hard. The song acknowledges lack of control and heartbreak and we’re all going to feel that at some point. And ALSO it’s emotional because everyone knows this song. If you sing it - it connects you to others. That’s effective. I just typed “GL” and the second provided auto fill that showed up was “GLASTONBURY 2019 MR BRIGHTSIDE”.
Brandon Flowers is like Tom Petty - they just write nothing but great songs with an earthy earnestness that yet emanates ethereal evanescence and therefore resonates specificity while remaining relevant to idiosyncratic interpretation.

I heard this song for first time today while I was at work today. Turns out I heard it before all the way back when I was 12. Im 22 now and hearing it for the first time in 12 years pulled it from from the darkest depths of my memory. Amazing.
