@@Shadow-In-The-East I'm not really sure? I feel like it's most likely the music, it's a catchy rhythm that quickly and easily draws you in. But the lyrics are also a part of why we love it so much: the heartache of missing out on love, and the jealousy of losing that love to someone else, is a feeling that a lot of people are likely able to relate to, and the fact that both verses are the same lyrics means it easy to remember if you feel like singing along. However, a lot of people nowadays, especially my age, have a sort of nostalgia when listening to this song also: when it first released, Mr Brightside was a massive hit in the UK, and so it was played often at parties, weddings, celebrations etc. Anyone my age listening to it is immediately brought back to that era of their life, when times were easy. And I think that's essentially what makes it such the cultural hit that it is in the UK: not only is it a catchy alt rock song with lyrics that people can relate to, but it's also got a sense of nostalgia for the good days, when things weren't so difficult in life and you could just have fun.

He touched the surface with why Mr Brightside is magnificent anthem loved by all in Ireland and the UK by saying it has a "sing along" feel. But the guitar riff is recognisable, the beat is fast and excitable and the lyrics are eccentric and poetic. It has a theme that is unique yet so many people relate : imagining the person you lust after being loved by someone else.

I went thru a rather similar experience only just a couple of years ago in regards to Stanley Kubrick. I'd apparently all these years never managed to hear him ever actually speak (or it was so little so long ago I just forgot), one day I found some documentary footage on here from The Shining's shoot and my jaw just hit the floor when he spoke with a general American accent. There was just something about him that always just sent me a message that he was British.

Actually the memory of him hearing Dont Look Back in Anger makes a lot of sense. That anthemic character of so much of what we went on to write. That's a cool story, and I can totally see how Mr Brightside was conceived as an 'answer' to that song.

At the time you had the pop-punk scene here in the states and that great British rock scene on the other end which had a following here but not as big then Mr. Brightside came and brought those two groups of fans together. I remember all the punk/emo kids in school liked it and all the alt/indie rock kids liked it. Great times.
