Absolutely fantastic review!!! I exclusively use Aputure 120 and Tri-8 for all my lighting. I get so many compliments on my production quality so it's very nice to see you stepping up the game for the lighting review game! Keep it up!
I don't know about most people but I love the old tech better. Tungsten, open face, Fresnel's. Sure they get hot but are a fraction of the price of this new tech, and still get the job done fantastically. At the end of the day it's just a light lol. It's not even being shown on camera. Just know how to use your tools!
I'm sad that more people haven't seen this video because you did such a beautiful job with the lighting, editing, and dialogue! You've just earned a new subscriber!
This is super helpful! Thanks for taking actual measurements of and showing a situation that means something! Please keep giving us the footcandles of your tests, I'm such a footcandle kind of guy and I don't think I'm alone. If I see one more video of some dude turning on a fixture in his living room and saying "See! Its really bright" I'm going to lose my shit. Keep up the good work!
Omg the production value in this video is amazing....why do you not have more subs on this channel. Great stuff Mr. Barry. Officially subscribed! Cheers
What an awesome review! Keep producing videos bro! Would love to see one on the basics of lighting techniques for newbies like me, loved the lighting in this video!
Great review! I always come back to it for another watch. Still waiting for your review on the colour performance of these lights. Keep up the good work
Great work b. Lots of useful information. Any chance of putting together one or multiple spreadsheet charts that have the information side by side to read and reflect on?
nice! would love a 4way look as u cycle thru the settings, ya know. also, end with a wrap up of your personal test findings. quirks, likes and dislikes you "experienced."
Couple of years old but seems pretty relevant today (given that there’s 120D II) and it seems that the LED lights are a “gud Enuff” price per candle option... esp if you don’t need to - throw - light over a greater distance (that is the tungsten’s theatrical grace)
Barry! would love to see you review the Aputure Mini Dome vs Full light Dome as well as there new space light. These items just came into Henrys, Monday. Would also love to see a 120D fersnel lens against a Source 4.
Thanks for such a detailed comparison - it's insane how much the DS1 lens knocks the level down. Do you find the loss comparable to say, using 216 diffusion?
Great video! You manages to show me exactly what I wanted to know. You also did it in a thoughtful and well shot artistic way. Well done! Subscribed :)
Hi, I don't see the light quality comparison you mentioned on your channel. I'm trying to compare the light quality of digital sputnik DS1 and Kino Flo freestyle mini and freestyle 21. I understand that people say the DS1 is designed for digital sensors, however based on given readings the Kino Flo has much higher CRI and I wonder how they would compare if were recorded on camera through digital sensors, specifically skin tone reproduction. Although I love the versatility of the DS1 for doc, if the Kino indeed offers a better quality of light, I'd go with it. Thanks
Surprised at the amount of falloff from the DS1 with even just the 34 spread. I've got a DS3 on the way, hoping there is a way to still get strong output with diffusion!
The diffusion lens use micro film coating to spread the beam, this is why the lenses are 2 sided instead giving you 2 different diffusion lenses. i would look into thier SoftBlade Modifier attachment if you are looking for something very soft with very wide spread (its like an old zip light or booklight mod). Also What i have heard is that a speed ring for a single DS light head is in development so options to diffuse your light would increase 1000x.
I quite like the Softblade attachment. It's has a fairy small front panel so I find I have to park it pretty close to talent to get it to the level of softness I want but it breaks down and takes very little additional footprint inside my 2 light case. For BG's and walls, etc it does a reasonably good job increasing the spread to give a nice wash of light.
Kessler Cineslider 3ft with their Second Shooter 3-axis system. I shoot these myself without an operator so it’s a useful system to add some movement. Thanks for commenting!
pixelatorNYC Thanks for your feedback! It only launched yesterday and I've only just started this channel so it'll probably take some time to build viewership! Important for me to target a different audience and provide specific information even if it is a lot smaller and niche. Thanks again!
Nice review, but something is wrong with your findings. The Arri 650 is coming in much less powerful than rated on Arri's photometric calculator along with other Aputure vs Arri comparisons. Perhaps your bulb is old. The Aputure result is coming in more powerful than most have rated it at. Cob120d is nowhere near a 1.5k fresnel in power even with the fresnel attachment. Perhaps the limited testing with regard to distance is helping to give a false impression of how these lights might perform in an array of filmmmaking scenarios. LED lights simply don't have the sort of throw that traditional fresnels have, even with a fresnel attachment and therefore are not often comparable to a traditional tungsten that measures similarly at a relatively close distance. 9ft is a reasonable distance but your numbers seem off. I would double check the equipment and all the variables. Nevertheless you've made a beautiful video that definitely went to great lengths to try to be precise. Hats off and look forward to more.
Thanks for your feedback! Just wanted to clarify that the distance I tested the lamps at was 6ft to the backdrop surface NOT 9ft ft. The WIDTH of the paper was 9ft to demonstrate beam spread. I did take a look at Arri's photometric calculator and you are correct that the numbers are significantly different than what I found. I also noticed that their published beam spread was also significantly different at just over 6ft where I know I was able to basically fill out my 9ft backdrop at that same distance. The bulb was definitely not brand new but I don't suspect that would contribute to that big of a difference. I'm always skeptical of manufacturer photometrics but it definitely does warrant a double check! As far at the Aputure goes I've been pretty impressed with it's throw. I did a more informal test with a Joker 400, at a 10ft distance, and found the centre of the beam on both lights to be nearly identical. The beam spread was noticeably wider on the 400 with far less falloff, I suspect due to the HMI's filament size, and as a starting source being brighter than the 120D's COB. Perhaps I'll consider a 120D, further HMI comparison down the road.
Thanks for the thoughtful and meticulous reply. Your channel has a very bright future; no pun intended. I'll be checking it out often. Best of luck to you.
The Joker Bug is not "part of the past". LED has its place, as does still HMI. While an Aputure 120D is a very useful tool, there are many things a Joker can do that it can't. For example its light spread does not work as well in large modifiers as Jokers do. Colro rendition, in particular red, is also not quite as good - and these differences matter when you are doing high end work. Not to mention no one rents Joker 200s. A joker 400, 800 or 1600 is many, many times as bright as an Apurture. Again, 120Ds have their place, but they do not replace tungsten or HMI.
Have never had an issue with mine not that they’ve seen heavy personal use, but I’ve also sent them out on a bit of rental when they were the flavour of the month without any issues coming back. I think largely they’ve been superseded by highly capable fixtures for a fraction of the price. The Nanlite 60C is a great example (at the time I’m making this comment).
chen fla the point wasn’t to give a ranking or say what was best because there isn’t one. It was meant to present some info and hopefully have the audience come to a conclusion on their own or at least send them down a path to explore further. Figure out what you’re doing and pick the right tool.
Love this review! And the fact that this is the prettiest review video on all of RUclips. You're insanely talented, Barry!
Aputure Thanks guys! Appreciate the feedback! More to come!

Speed ring would be great! Softblade seems interesting, though I can't seem to find where I could pick one up.

great video. sad its such a niche subject, not enough views for the work you put it :(

Why didn't you tell us what do you think about each light?
why do the sputniks sell for so cheap on ebay? must be an issue with them?

what is that soft parabolic ummbrella light that you have on top ? kurve ?
thanks
Cine 6 please do update a video for diffusion ( lee filters )
Thanks for your suggestions! I’ll take it into consideration. Also check out Shane Hurlbuts diffusion test. It’s very good!
