  • Arri 650w Fresnel , should you buy one in 2019? Hey all! After a viewer request. We answered the question...Should you buy an Arri 650.
We set up an Arri 650 and showed some of it's uses, went over the pros & cons.
We shot all video with a Canon C100, t6i, and an XC10. We used three cameras to give us better coverage and show how the light looked on different cameras.
This is part 1 of a two part video.

Nice review! I ran a kit of Arri Fresnels for about 10 years 300s and 650s. Yes they are hot to touch but I never really had any issues about heating up a space. Just wait a few minutes after you switch them off to pack them up. These lights are extremely well made, super robust, easy to get parts if something gets damaged and they put out a beautiful light. Well worth the money particularly a good second hand light. Add some nice Chimera soft boxes to your kit (also great second hand) and you have controllable hard lights for strong shadows and soft lights for beautiful skin tones - the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the feedback! I've been focusing on my audio design more in my current video. Sometimes killing the back track completely and using different ones for b-roll scenes. Audio is an area I still need to develop more.

Excellent video. Please do more content related to lighting, like this. Some more tutorial style videos on practical use cases of lights like these. That'd be great, I loved this one. And subscribed to your channel.

excellent presentation. Thanks for putting the T6i in there with the C200 as well.

Thank you! The T6i holds a special place in my heart. It was my first camera, a great tool to begin learning cinema esq techniques with. Just to be clear I was using a C100 in the video, but now that you said that maybe I should use the C200 vs the T6i!

As a Gaffer that has worked on many large and small Tv And Film Productions in my view the ARRI 650 are always in the truck ,its a go-to unit that works along side all my new HMI and LED fittings .The Quality of light for the cost will always be a firm favorite for me even if its old tech ,many of the large productions still love them and the beauty of tungsten always has worked for me .Good Video , I Will SUBSCRIBE

Thank you! Arri does make some great Fresnels! Whenever I have them mixed with other equal wattage instruments. The Arri always seem to have more punch and a cleaner overall look.

It's also much better when it comes to the CRI compared with the LEDs.

What filters do I use on the 150 Plus and 650? I can’t find colored filters that fit.

to me non-pro LEDs are too soft, flat panels or otherwise - you need tungsten for pure spectral highlights and for filling a space like you did

Hello, I need a light source that can give me sharp shadows while the subject that is being lit is out of frame. Will this Arri 650 Fresnel suffice? Also I plan on using the house outlet. Please help, thanks.

As you dim it, you'll lose your color temperature, but at least you'll still have a CRI of 100.

True statement! Just something to keep in mind when White Balancing your camera(s). Or matching multiple talent using multiple instruments.

You can find some great deals on used ones. As long as the elctric is still good then they should work.
