    I am the product of desegregation in Miami, Florida, just as Ketanji Brown Jackson was, and it was the most powerful education I ever received. I think that Marc Lamont Hill is absolutely right that it has to be taught in schools and it must be imposed again so that we can learn not to fear each other and we can empathize. Very good conversation. It went by quickly.

    • @j.n.sloane
      @j.n.sloane 2 года назад

      @Mark Ulis, you ask an interesting question. Why would it make sense to require desegregation in a state that has extremely few minorities? Logically, it wouldn't, so imposing it on a state like Montana, where the Black population is at about 1% would seem unnecessary. Whereas, a state like Mississippi with a Black population of about 38% would IF it were seen to be segregated, which given the large Black population would also seem unnecessary. The key point is that desegregation should solve a problem. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, history is taught to people, who did not participate in that history, all the time. Primarily, so that we don't repeat the mistakes others have made. Slavery was wrong. We teach about slavery and why it is wrong. Most of us have never owned a slave but we're still taught about it. I know that you have empathy for people who have been wrongly oppressed. It is a sign of a higher understanding to relate to others, even when you have not experienced such trauma yourself. That is why I would like to see more interracial interaction; to increase a higher understanding.

    This is so interesting and it reminds me about how I talked to my high school kids differently teaching in south central.LA I would give the kids money to go to the grocery next door to get us juices and snacks and tell them to remember to get the receipt in your hand. And it wasn't that I wanted to know how much they spent, but to get them out the door without being stopped. And sadly, we just all accepted "that's just what it is", rather than taking the next step and asking why. All my kids wanted were just the refreshments for our after school activity and the response from many was the narrative ... Well, unsupervised teens are known to shoplift Fritos.

    Supremacy is a social construct, race is biological as ethnicity is cultural. Who decides what skin color to be born with? The issue is hating someone because what they are born. In other parts of the he world people are discriminated by their last name or where they're from.

      Al & Marc allude to your point when they talked about how the Irish, Italian, European Jews, Slavs, etc came to America, they were not considered to be "white". Perhaps the greatest irony of "White Supremacy" is that it always turns on the so called "White" people in the end...

I wonder this: Did it ever occur to anyone trying to desegregate the schools by driving all the students out of their districts every day, to JUST EXCHANGE THE TEACHERS ? I think that would have been infinitely more effective. I just put my background in to catch your eye. But I wonder if we should experiment, and try the other way, if they're still doing it? My Southern California nieces and nephews were bussed back and forth. It's not healthy; the air you breathe is foul and there's no exercise. My two siblings bussed to school, somehow I never got to do that, just walk and bike at least a mile away; and now in our eighties, I'm the only one that can still walk. Why are they pretending to not understand that conservative people know that they are not talking about Law School CRT. Conservatives have added another definition, to the original term. Words are given additional definitions all the time. Black people did the same or did we, with the word racism, and never made a public pronouncement, as if we had the power to do so. We changed it, or added a definition that requires power to be involved in it, and also expected everyone else to accept it, without a pronouncement. Conservatives never gave a pronouncement, but their definition of CRT holds more sway, than the definition of racism that Black people created. That in itself is a lesson in CRT - both definitions of it. The notion of race as a social construct, to my way of thinking, is pointless. Isn't nearly everything a creation of society - the interaction of people? The main point however is, who would want to get rid of the notion, if it were possible anyway? Black people are likely the last ones who would want to be just like everyone else. That is why so many of us can say things like - "we are the original people", but don't see other people, as the same as us. We make as big a deal out of our uniqueness as any group. So if Whiteness and Blackness is erased from our conscious, what is left - for sure, the have and the have-nots? White Conservatives, back in the days, when Black people started using the term African-American, complained and would say, things like - "they are or should be no hyphenated-Americans - we are all just American". But do you think they object to Italian and Chinese restaurants? What American city hasn't had annual ethnic festivals, for decades, likely centuries? This resistance/objection of Black people's right to designate themselves, to the extent that it is even legitimate, within us as a group, is in itself material for a curriculum course, on race issues. This is an example of how I see CRT can be taught objectively in schools. the specific material must be judged before the public, or judged and the results then, brought before the public and explained. This is just race hustling, being presented as journalism. Both sides have always done it. If anyone of note/prominence, in this country, is serious about what is happening today, or who doesn't have an ulterior motive attached to their involvement, in these issues, I have yet to come across them. I understand getting a respite from the misery, we have to live with, among, and endure, but to mix getting relief from it, with attempts to eliminate or reduce it, is a disservice to both ends, IMO. Just focusing on critical thinking about racial issues, or just plain critical thinking - period, would go a long way, in getting to a place, where the specific issues could be discussed, in a potentially productive manner. I have no clue, as to how to get the crucial ingredient of honesty, into the mix.

    The problem these guys have with CRT is the praise / blame that comes with the behaviorally values we have grown to instill on civilization. So just looking at what the whole Anglo invasion of America and the treatment of the Native Americans as a whole is just not acceptable by today's standards.
    We may have come here as refugees, but how we proceeded with the "manifest destiny" which betrayed every diplomatic treaty just has to be uncomfortable to look at. And how much uglier was the slavery issue ! ?
    There must be a problem with the guilty conscience of what HAS happened that people fear the repercussions of the behavior of their ancestors so much, that the only possible protection is to somehow vilify the others, and frame THEM as the lesser ones.

      @scrubjay93 2 года назад +1

      Actually no, they were referring to the word "critical" as it pertains to "critical theory" as a Marxist dog whistle. I looked it up because I wanted to know more about it:
      in wikipedia under Critical Theory: "A critical theory is any approach to social philosophy that focuses on reflective assessment and critique of society and culture in order to reveal and challenge power structures. With roots in sociology and literary criticism, it argues that social problems stem more from social structures and cultural assumptions than from individuals. It argues that ideology is the principal obstacle to human liberation."
      "Critical Theory has a narrow and a broad meaning in philosophy and in the history of the social sciences. “Critical Theory” in the narrow sense designates several generations of German philosophers and social theorists in the Western European Marxist tradition known as the Frankfurt School. According to these theorists, a “critical” theory may be distinguished from a “traditional” theory according to a specific practical purpose: a theory is critical to the extent that it seeks human “emancipation from slavery”, acts as a “liberating … influence”, and works “to create a world which satisfies the needs and powers of” human beings (Horkheimer 1972b [1992, 246]). Because such theories aim to explain and transform all the circumstances that enslave human beings, many “critical theories” in the broader sense have been developed. They have emerged in connection with the many social movements that identify varied dimensions of the domination of human beings in modern societies. In both the broad and the narrow senses, however, a critical theory provides the descriptive and normative bases for social inquiry aimed at decreasing domination and increasing freedom in all their forms." plato.stanford.edu/entries/critical-theory/

    Sadly, I do not feel that anyone wants good honest debate. It were eradicated 6 years ago to a minority, but a large minority, on both sides. I love my colored brothers and sisters, black, brown, red ,yellow or translucent. We are the same. All of us. Take down the injustice. Hit the restart on all of it...everyone

    Interesting that Al Franken confesses to not having a clear idea of what is meant by structural racism, (probably still doesn't) while Hill references a children's book for five year olds that explores the issue. So which is it, is the concept of structural racism truly age inappropriate for 5 year olds or is the former congressman and celebrity comedian just a bit dimwitted?

    there is a def a racial aspect. but there is something different to me about seeing a place with more infrastructure and what appears to be long-standing areas without conflict/war/battles, it just hits closer to home...even if they were all asian or African or whatever. there is a sense of strife in the Mid East that I have not perceived in other areas...so it's just not what my consciousness already has in mind.

    Very informative podcast with Marc Lamont Hill and his clarifying observations, and skillful explanation about critical race theory, including how some Republicans are distorting it for their own power grabbing political gain.

    I want the next person Marc Lamont Hill asks his pet gotcha question …
    Name something positive about being white” to look him in the eye and say truthfully”
    “no one can accuse me of being an unqualified diversity hire for something like a University Professor.”

      You need to look into CRT, segregated schools lead to poor educational and therefore economic outcomes which result from racially biased legal and social structures. That is why the school voucher initiatives are so dangerous and inherently racist, they pull money away from public schools and to privileged private schools, which happen to have more white students.
