And if you (conservative parents) think that sending your kids to a Baptist high school is going to be a more sheltered environment than public high school, you are dreaming.
More importantly - you are not preparing your children for reality. When they leave the "protective" bubble they will encounter a world that has evolved without them. I grew up in the city in Canada where the escaped slaves ended up. Harriet Tubman's church is an historical site. William Hamilton Merritt (builder of the Welland Canal) gave the formerly enslaved homes to live in, in a neighborhood with everyone else, not a slum. When the school on that street needed to be rebuild, it was named after Harriet Tubman and a statue was built there.. Of course we have racists in Canada. People live here. But, just a few months ago a bust of Ms. Tubman was vandalized. That church was there before Ms. Tubman came to town and no one has ever bothered it in well over a 150 years, not until Trump got into office. Our municipal elections have no party affiliations. You run as yourself, not a Liberal, Conservative or NDP (a whole party of Bernie Sanders types). The last election saw candidates homes and vehicles vandalized if they were considered "too Liberal'. This has never happened before, not until Trump. Now we have Confederate, Nazi, QAnon and Trump flags flying in Ottawa and at border crossings. About 89% of Canadians are vaccinated and most of us just want to do whatever we have to do to get through this pandemic. We don't want to die. There have been a few protests because, again, people live here. Someone got donor lists on the GoFundMe type pages. Guess what? About 55% of the donors are AMERICAN and a large number of those are Trump supporters. Now it's spreading, all over the world. Does that remind you of anything that was happening, say about 80-90 years ago? I know, because everyone in Ontario had to take a history course in grade 10 and it covered both world wars. Maybe that's why the far right doesn't want history taught. They don't want anyone to see it coming. You people have a big problem brewing and it's more than a giant orange oaf who refuses to admit that he lost an election. Biden could take some lessons from Trudeau. He recognized this as an insurrection and he's shutting it down. They have identified the protestors. Their bank accounts and credit cards are frozen and they can't get any money from the fundraisers. Drivers licenses and insurance are suspended. Anyone helping them faces the same. Too harsh? These huge trucks can easily be weaponized just like the planes were on 9/11. My wife grew up on Bainbridge Island, Washington, and she remembers in grade school in the '60's her teacher relating how during the outbreak of WWII Japanese families on the West Coast (including Bainbridge) were deported to camps. She burst out laughing because she thought the teacher was joking only to find out the teacher was not joking. I grew up in the city in Canada where the escaped slaves ended up. Harriet Tubman's church is an historical site. William Hamilton Merritt (builder of the Welland Canal) gave the formerly enslaved homes to live in, in a neighborhood with everyone else, not a slum. When the school on that street needed to be rebuild, it was named after Harriet Tubman and a statue was built there.. Of course we have racists in Canada. People live here. But, just a few months ago a bust of Ms. Tubman was vandalized. That church was there before Ms. Tubman came to town and no one has ever bothered it in well over a 150 years, not until Trump got into office. Our municipal elections have no party affiliations. You run as yourself, not a Liberal, Conservative or NDP (a whole party of Bernie Sanders types). The last election saw candidates homes and vehicles vandalized if they were considered "too Liberal'. This has never happened before, not until Trump.
Now we have Confederate, Nazi, QAnon and Trump flags flying in Ottawa and at border crossings. About 89% of Canadians are vaccinated and most of us just want to do whatever we have to do to get through this pandemic. We don't want to die. There have been a few protests because, again, people live here. Someone got donor lists on the GoFundMe type pages. Guess what? About 55% of the donors are AMERICAN and a large number of those are Trump supporters. Now it's spreading, all over the world. Does that remind you of anything that was happening, say about 80-90 years ago? I know, because everyone in Ontario had to take a history course in grade 10 and it covered both world wars. Maybe that's why the far right doesn't want history taught. They don't want anyone to see it coming.
You people have a big problem brewing and it's more than a giant orange oaf who refuses to admit that he lost an election. Biden could take some lessons from Trudeau. He recognized this as an insurrection and he's shutting it down. They have identified the protestors. Their bank accounts and credit cards are frozen and they can't get any money from the fundraisers. Drivers licenses and insurance are suspended. Anyone helping them faces the same. Too harsh? These huge trucks can easily be weaponized just like the planes were on 9/11. We haven't ever had to invoke the Emergencies Act - essentially what you would call Marshall Law, since, you guessed it, Trump was put in office.
I really enjoy your podcast and I apologize for using it in this way. I just realized that many of your former colleagues are probably here. They probably don't even realize that Fox News and Trump's supporters tried to take over our country. No one pays attention to us. Until about 25 years ago, Americans were still crossing the border in Niagara Falls with snow skis on their roof racks in July and were seriously confused because there wasn't any snow or igloos (I messed with them, Al. You would have been proud of me) You people need a wakeup call before we BOTH lose our countries. We're gone 5 minutes after you are. And watch out for the next protest. They're going to be using Mack Trucks, not baseball bats and pitch forks.

I've just finished reading Maya Angelou's "I know why the caged bird sings". Loved it. Has that also been banned.
It's one of the most frequently banned books these days. Because it tells the truth about how African-Americans are treated in simple ways, let alone the societal implications. Ms Angelou is arguably the most-often banned author in American literature.

You mean equal time to biblical creationism. The student petitioned the school board for that at a Christian college in Illinois, but the science faculty refused to go along with the school board. I have found that some students by the time they enter college have never heard of evolution.

My wife grew up on Bainbridge Island, Washington, and she remembers in grade school in the '60's her teacher relating how during the outbreak of WWII Japanese families on the West Coast (including Bainbridge) were deported to camps. She burst out laughing because she thought the teacher was joking only to find out the teacher was not joking. Well, this made her feel terrible ... so, in today's climate I guess this can't be taught because it would make some students feel bad... well, IT SHOULD MAKE YOU FEL BAD!! And then angry!!

I taught " The Color Purple" to Juniors as part of an American Studies class. The father of one of my students ( An Evangelical Minister) read the book and told me that I absolutely had to teach it- that it was an revelation. He told me to refer any parents who had an issue with the book to call him. Fear of words, of ideas ...wow. So fascist of them.

Again, way to go, Al. The Republican Party has latched onto something that is truly insidious: Something makes us feel badly, so let's just ignore that it ever happened -- that will teach children. By all means, let's not learn from it so we don't repeat it. While she was in high school, IN THE 1970's, my older sister took a Black History course and, even though it upset her to learn, in detail, about all those years of slavery and injustice, it was her favorite course -- because she was learning something important.
Out of this entire segment, the primarily scary thought (out of many) to me was that one dickhead's use of the word "popular" (or unpopular).
I don't recall - ever - as a child or even a teen that I was to believe and act on everything "if it was popular". To act responsibly, as an adult... doesn't have jackshit to do with what's "popular".
On the other hand, sadly, the two most "popular" presidents in the modern era were Reagan and Ttump. Actors. Entertainers. Schmoozers of the ignorant.

That's not what I said, nor implied. The key word here - very key - was/is "popular". Don't know your age, but my first vote was for Jimmy Carter. Throughout the decades, I can't see "popular" being used on ANY other presidents other than Reagan and Ttump. They had been entertainers. They were trained how to talk, act, sound... in that profession. They actually possessed their degrees of popularity long before running for office.
Result : "popular"... with their bases. Similar to some modern day singer that fans fawn all over. And Reagan is still held in high esteem by the GOP. Especially by the filthy rich.
What Ron, Jr. would have to say is of zero importance to that point.
Side note: Jimmy Carter is the only presidential candidate I've ever voted FOR. Every other one was a matter of voting for the lesser of two evils. He was the anti-Ttump, a good person. Especially following in the footsteps of Lester Maddox.
Additional side note: The only time I've voted for a Republican for President was in the primaries when Bush, Sr. opposed Reagan. Because I thought HE was a good person. But the Ronster and his crew soon turned Georgie, Sr. into a whiny POS quickly. You know... all against the LLLLLLLiberaaLLLLLs. I believe the BS is still trickling down from that era.

Love the history lesson. My turn: For about 250 years of our 400 year history, we forced some people to work for us. We raped, hung and abused them.Then there was a war. ...and then we set them free without any civil rights. Things were okay for about 5 years, then they got bad, and then they got a little better, now we gotta figure out how to get rid of them, cuz they just keep making trouble by agitating for equal treatment, etc. 🤣
