It was about the impact it would have on other people. And quite frankly, a lot of us are tired of being expected to vote against our own interests because the stakes are so high. The stakes are high every election. Reagan's election resulted in many thousands of unnecessary HIV related deaths. GHWB had the first war in Iraq. Clinton spent most of his administration fighting various scandals related to his dealings and eventually his sex life while delivering very little to benefit the regular people as they fell behind. GWB failed to stop 9/11 and then created a massive war where hundreds of thousands Iraqis were killed in ethnic cleansing, the number may even have topped a million, as the US disbanded their military and failed to ensure there were troops on the ground to prevent the subsequent revenge and recriminations. Excellent video - a clear & comprehensive prescription for salvaging representative democracy! Many thanks to Robert Reich! Yes, I’m widely sharing this video.
Here’s the thing…we the people have to talk to each other about this stuff. Dr. Reich is giving us good information that is easy for us to synthesize and communicate to others. Now here’s the hard part…people on both sides need to exercise humility by actually talking with people from the opposite side. That is the actual problem to be solved.
In the long run, the only solution that really works is refusing to vote for the Democrats until they commit to free and fair primaries followed by actually using the levers of power to deliver on their promises. Harris was an empty suit and enough people saw through it that she lost to one of the most beatable candidates ever.
We'd then need to make education our top priority so that we don't have people who think that the noise from windmills cause cancer deciding our elections. These people are fucking morons who believe the dumbest shit...
It's a safeguard against people who vote stupidly. It's genius actually. Especially now, not possible. What we should be pushing for, is VOTER ID and proof of CITIZENSHIP for every voters
@EphraimAtwater It has 100K more population and four times the GDP of Wyoming. Why should the 580K people in Wyoming get representation in Congress while the 680K in DC don't?
EphraimAtWater Sure thing; let's have Wyoming merge with say...Montana or Idaho as well. They have an even smaller population than DC; an even smaller share of the economy. And it wouldn't deprive them of representation any more then having DC join VA or MD would. But we both know the real reason you care about one group of half a million people having three electoral votes and not the other, don't we? While we're at it...why do we need two Dakotas? Just one would make things more efficient; y'all are all about government inefficiency, right? Hypocrite.
Thank you Robert R for educating the Americans of their rights as “we, the people”. Not just give up their power to self determination to their leaders! Your vlogs are very informative , educational and timely . God bless you more and the nation!🙏👍🇺🇸
Such smart, logical and democratic suggestions! It just makes sense. What a great base for a secondary schools, universities and library mandatory and free course for all citizens, giving them a certificate of civic knowledge, understanding, and trust. It would empower the youth becoming first time voters, newcomers, and all citizens of all social levels. I hope you get millions of supporters to help you put in place such program and see the election process a more structured, honest, ethical, equalizing right in the USA.
We have a Country that listens to the media to tell them how to feel or who to hate, I know people who's lives were never effected by the Economy yet they would continue to complain about it, make it illegal for the media to lie and back up everything with facts ( I know this will never happen) it should be illegal for the media to be a major influence on a election by their lies and it shouldn't matter what side your on since none of us want to be lied to right, yet millions watched a Entertainment show that paid 780 million in one law suit for lying, was kicked out of the UK for Lying and believe everything they heard from the host who were giving there opinions of the news not the actual truth.
So often, when presented with how simple our problems are but how impossible they are to fix given the state of things, I simply feel like screaming until I pass out.
What is this steadfast gentleman’s secret? Remaining committed to encouraging healthy operation in the democratic process and reasonable education, with his years of constant participation, is an amazing thing.
The long-standing two-party system is a big problem. It automatically creates two opposing 'teams,' and boy, do people love feeling like they're part of a team. The fact that people will vote straight Red or Blue down a ballot without knowing a single thing about the candidates shows how entrenched this is. "I am on this team. And my team thinks this way. My team is opposite of your team. Therefore, we can't agree." Most political/social issues are complex and cannot be addressed using only Republican or Democrat 'principles.' The solutions are in the middle.
I agree with everything you said here except for the last bit about the solutions being in the middle. The two party system also has the consequence of creating false dichotomies on many issues and results in public discourse that doesn’t entertain alternative solutions outside of red team or blue team. There are so many problems that can be solved by simply looking outside of the two options presented. For example, replacing unfair taxes with Georgian land taxes has wide poll support across the red-blue divide and are only really opposed by the ultra wealthy who own absurdly enormous swaths of land. Land taxes don’t even get talked about at all when red-blue arguments about tariffs, sales tax, income tax, etc. come up to the point that most Americans have never even heard of them.
AMEN to that. If the Democratic party were not led by the President, we would have had a real primary and likely would have ended up with an entirely different candidate. While I think Harris is great, I know the lingering issues about a woman leading (especially when the world is on fire), and even then, she just got the ball too late in the game. Would like to see a system like Parlament in so many countries where 3rd party candidates are needed to get legislation passed. Seems to me it forces compromise.
Robert..Thankyou for being a beacon of light and inspiration.Thankyou for caring and taking the time to get all of this information out..I appreciate you!!
As a non-american i have to ask: does the electoral college still make sense in the 21st century? It made sense during the dangerous travel through the wild west, but in the modern, computerized era?

Trump is a big middle finger to the system. That's part of his allure with many people that feel as though they've been forgotten about by the elites of both parties. He wrestled control of the party from the Republican elites. Populist Democrats must do the same.
As a non-American, but a keen observer of American politics, how can you all be sure that the election counts were accurate? The questions raised by the noted data scientist Stephen Spoonamore about the 2024 presidential election are extremely concerning, and Spoonamore has a history of having identified irregularities in previous elections.
If you are concerned about election integrity then may I recommend John Lott’s statistical analysis of the previous election. But somehow I think you only care when you lose:

@@horsepanthershould I really be forced to vote for politicians that have no interest in my welfare or that of my neighbor? Why should I be forced to vote for politicians who will just perpetuate the same systems that disadvantage everyone but elites? I used to believe in mandatory voting…but increasingly, as I gain insight into the BS perpetuated by the majority of our politicians today - I’m beginning to think that the only way to achieve the changes discussed in this video is to encourage a national boycott of voting …to send a real message. But I thank you for simply asking me a follow-up question - most people would have responded by just calling me names and labeling me as “unpatriotic”.
@@charbam9506Mandatory voting means voters have to turn up to a polling place. They don't have to actually vote when they get there. It would change the playing field because candidates don't have to focus on just getting their base out (and restricting the oppositions?), they now have a lot more voters they need to appeal to - because if they don't then the other candidate might, or those voters might vote against them out of spite.
These are all beautiful and sensible ideas. They are also naive, particularly when you acknowledge how subtly and insidiously "democracy" has been captured by our ruling oligarchy for many decades. The performative theatrics of our current electoral process would make P.T. Barnum weep with envy. Our entrenched duopoly is the nemesis of genuine democracy. And it is hiding in plain sight.
Very few people in this country understand that it is the duopoly and its corporate puppet master that is at the ROOT of every modern problem we have. I applaud your comment!

I think we really need to focus very hard now on getting IRV.
Great video, but I have a genuine question. Now that Maga has basically taken over, will trying any of the suggestions in the video really be impactful, Or do you think it most likely would be in vain? And if you don't think it would be in vain, which suggestion do you think would be most likely to work? Now I know at least trying is better than doing nothing, but i'm honestly really discouraged

Here’s a few things that could help.
1. Make November 5 election day a national holiday.
2. Abolish the electoral college and replace it with one person one vote.
3. Get rid of “lobbying“ and other money schemes
4. Ban misinformation on news platforms, and advertisements.
5. Block foreign intervention from other countries and organizations.
6. Give the people all the important information about every candidate to know how trustworthy they are.
If only there were a simple way to do 3, 4, 5, and 6.
But how?
well the problem with your so called heapful ideas one goes against our constitutional rights and second it will make us a democracy instead of a constitutional republic but number 5 i agree with but guess who really uses foreign intervention it's the democrats hillary got busted when she ran against trump in 2016 and by all means she should've been locked up cause she actually broke the law but did you see trump go after her for political gains no but biden and them sure are trying their best to stop a man that really cares about america the democrats want to keep sending your money overseas so it lines their pockets trum is the only president that lost money while in office and your pockets were better off when he was in office but blind idiots just want to keep putting the warmongers in office to keep america in debt
The electoral college is important so that the cities don't own the countryside similiar to what happened in England.
@@ordinaryratthat would only happen if we ONLY get rid of the EC but it we replace it with 1 person 1 vote then it doesn’t matter where you live and the candidates have to go for a broader range of people

Dear Robert Reich, thanks very much for this! And also for educating the American people and restoring the faith in our democracy ! 🎉👏
I am all about Solutions! These are very good Solutions and well explained!
In the long run, the only solution that really works is refusing to vote for the Democrats until they commit to free and fair primaries followed by actually using the levers of power to deliver on their promises. Harris was an empty suit and enough people saw through it that she lost to one of the most beatable candidates ever.
A great smart teacher and leader. Always giving to help us all see the truth.thank you Dr. Reich ❤

All great ideas. We also need to get DC and PR to become states (and possibly other territories)
Why should DC become a state?
@EphraimAtwater It has 100K more population and four times the GDP of Wyoming. Why should the 580K people in Wyoming get representation in Congress while the 680K in DC don't?
@scurra1163 they are represented. If they want seats in the senate they can rejoin Virginia or Maryland.
@@EphraimAtwaterstarting with IF. Does not support your statement
Hypocrite.

This country is not as split as they'd like you to believe. It is gerrymandered to hell and back.
Lmaoooo. Yea they gerrymandered the popular vote as well👀😂 cope brother
Why did Trump win all the poor states and counties?
Robert Reich is so informative.
America is a land of opportunists
This is brilliant! Thank you for this information. 👍
Great ideas! It always helps me when I have an explicit, obtainable objective. Well done!
So often, when presented with how simple our problems are but how impossible they are to fix given the state of things, I simply feel like screaming until I pass out.
I don't think they are simple at all...
They could be remedied overnight if the will to change existed.
Im going to share this video thank you Robert for your information.

As a non-american i have to ask: does the electoral college still make sense in the 21st century? It made sense during the dangerous travel through the wild west, but in the modern, computerized era?
No not at all
It's ridiculous 💯%
It absolutely does. Even more now. the big states population wise are on both coasts, and having California and new York. pulling even more of the strings is NOT a good idea. I am in the border country and my state just crossed the 2 million mark. We'ed be totally ignored... Well we kinda still are. The Beautiful Land of Entrapment is also the "Forgotten State" "The OTHER border starte"
