I always enjoy your reactions but this one is special. Tower of Power was from the Bay Area (East Bay) and was huge in the late 60's & early 70's. Rick Stevens was one of the great soul singers of that period until he went to prison and the band never was the same after that. Great memories...thank you once again. "So Very Hard To Go" by this group is also a great song to react to.
❤️ I had a younger guy once. I had to let him go because he needed to get down to his path. But, he was a man in spirit. This song always makes me think of him.
I was in high school when this came out and fell in love with it. This is one of the greatest vocal performances of all time. Rick Stevens sang this song. To this day, still unbelievable!!! Thanks for playing it.
Another unforgettable group of the 70s that decade was full of great great music and Tower Of Power was one that brought it. I am just so happy that I got to see them in person in the 70s they were all in more! The live performance was exceptional, at the Omni in Atlanta Georgia… The place was packed and we all left feeling absolutely great about what we just experienced. Just wish they were groups like this today at least we have them to listen to.
Another thing about the 70s decade, the lyrics the songs had messages along with the music. Very often, things you could relate to and got into your soul and your mind, the music and the lyrics were exceptional
I Love TOP❣ this is my absolute favorite song of theirs. Even as a kid, I always loved their trumpet/horn section. Who would of known 30+ years later I would have a musician son that plays trumpet, flugal horn, french horn, mellophone...and of course he Loves Tower of Power. It's so ironic that he went to the same high school (and took band) that TOP's trumpeter-Sal Crachiolo went to.
Mic Gillette was an amazing trumpet player and I have heard it said the opening is the most definitive/ recognizable 4 trumpet notes in popular music. Fell in love with this song when it came out and TOP is one of my favorites (doesn't hurt that I grew up in the Bay Area). TOP still going strong - RIP Mic, Skip, Rick and Rocco. Check out Sparkling in the Sand live and Willing to Learn and I like Your Style live (with Brent Carter on vocals)
Rick Stevens got laid low by drugs. He got into a violent dispute with some men over drugs and ended up doing a 36 year bid for murder. He was able to do this song with the band after he got out. He passed a few years ago.
Your are correct. He killed 3 drug dealers and was placed in jail. He recently died. After he left the group Lenny Williams show up on the scene from the 3rd album titled Tower of Power
The Tower of Power band really is all about the horn section. The biggest horn section ever in pop soul music. Bigger than Chicago's horn section and Earth Wind and Fire's horn section. All about that horn section and the organ. They didn't even bother with a bassist; the insane organist Chester Thompson, played bass pedals with his feet. The horn guys were mostly white and wrote everything and found a string of super-dynamic front men to do the vocals. This guy was the first vocalist and then (sound-alike) Lenny Williams took over and did most of their hits after the first guy went to prison for misadventure.
A good lp. from Tower of power was Back on the street 79' It had hits Heaven must of made you, And you know it, Our love, and the roller skating jam Rock baby. It funky & the horns are great.
Tower of Power is one big rabbithole to discover!! Check out Social Lubrication, Sparkle In the Sand, Get Yo Feet Back On the Ground!! Leader/founder of Tower of Power Emilio "Mimi" Castillo used to date a girl back in the days who were a couple of years older than him. Eventually she brook up with him and said these words "you're still a young man baby don't waste your time".
Tower of Power has a slew of jams! Some epic drumming and of course dope horns. A somewhat forgotten track of their's I like is " Funk the Dumb Stuff".
Other 70s oldies to consider: Earth,Wind & Fire “Getaway” AWB “School Boy Crush” Spinners “Games People Play” Chaka Khan “Sweet Thing” Isley Brothers “The Pride” Heatwave “Always and Forever” Cheryl Lynn “To Be Real”
@@MikeCoggan Agreed....this is from the short-lived series from the early 1970’s, “SOUL”. There are several absolute gems of live performances captured on the various episodes. The series is available to stream on the Tubi and Amazon Prime platforms.

Why does it have to be an older woman? Nobody can waste your time like young girls who haven't figured things out for themselves, The TOP horn section was world famous, appearing on a lot of tracks from all over.
Kinda makes today's current music industry output come across like very loose bull excrement. If you know what I'm saying. And you do know exactly what I'm saying.
My youth is gone but I can always go back to the music and the memories 😊
The trumpets of this group were the best in the country. Check out their youtube 40th anniversary on this song(Even better)
Rick Stevens was the original singer of Tower Of Power and he had a. Beautiful soulful voice ❤❤❤❤❤

The horn section was everything, made the vocals shine
❤️ I had a younger guy once. I had to let him go because he needed to get down to his path. But, he was a man in spirit. This song always makes me think of him.
Absolutely epic, from the incomparable opening, to the equally amazing ending!!!

They are out of Oakland.. I can't even count how many times I saw them back in the day.
"Back to Oakland" So am I, but I can't sing lol!
Me too. Seen them too many times to count on both coasts but unfortunately never in Oaktown.
Another thing about the 70s decade, the lyrics the songs had messages along with the music. Very often, things you could relate to and got into your soul and your mind, the music and the lyrics were exceptional
Seen them in 1980,,,amazing band,, amazing concert. This is my favorite by them. ✌

WoW! I thought I was the only person who knew all of the members from TOP who passed away
Rick Stevens got laid low by drugs. He got into a violent dispute with some men over drugs and ended up doing a 36 year bid for murder. He was able to do this song with the band after he got out. He passed a few years ago.
mrstep2me I saw Rick a few weeks after he got out of prison at a club in Oakland.
Your are correct. He killed 3 drug dealers and was placed in jail. He recently died. After he left the group Lenny Williams show up on the scene from the 3rd album titled Tower of Power
KOS young brother. Killer Old Skool. TOP jam still hittin' it out of the park as we head into 2023. Know that.
i remember when the horn section would drop to their knees on this song. T O P was one of my favorites.. Squib Cakes all day...
The high notes on the trumpet was performed by Mic Gillette. He recently died as did the bass player Rocco
One of my favorite songs by Tower of Power is "You Ought To Be Having Fun". I like happy music, too.
This song is so freaking awesome to me.

I agree with you 100% in terms of TOP. Are you aware that the horn players from Chicago were graduates from DePaul University's school of music?
@@curtiss2000 Yep. Hey, ya know Blood, Sweat & Tears may have beaten them all to the pop party with a fiery horn section.
@@cordellsenior9935 : David Clayton Thomas had a nice voice. But TOP had a lot more hits
@@curtiss2000 Without a doubt.
Blood Sweat and Tears had good singer.David Clayton Thomas
Love this song! Great lyrics & vocals and the instrumental sound is off the hook! The ending is insane!
Excellent cut, timeless message. Young folks don't waste your time!
Aww man my father used to wear this song out! I would love to hear you react to "Have You Seen Her?" by the Chi-lites
Check out their song "Sparkling in the Sand." Tower of Power are from the East Bay of CA, my old stomping grounds.

If this is you’re first time hearing TOP, why the hell are you choosing ballads from one of the best funk bands ever? Bad choice.
