The "Close Dancing" that this song inspired in the clubs was something to witness. The women really loved the emotions expressed in this awesome song. The dance floors were packed.
the 40th anniversary video is the best Ive ever heard from my favorite band. I have seen them live many times but that lead singer at the 40th is one of a kind.
Tower of Power was one of the few soul\R and B groups that was almost universally respected by all of the rockers back in this era. A lot of rockers were not tolerant of other genres (ever here of disco record burning events? Look it up). The other one that comes to mind as being universally loved is Earth Wind and Fire.
I remember being a line cook in the 70s, and there were five of us on the line and we came out and sang this song when it came on to all the female waitresses in the restaurant. Those are great days.
@@chickinpickin1 Reminds me of my older girlfriends from the 70's. I've had this conversation a few times. "When a man comes to you, with his little heart in his hand", just the thought will draw a tear.
Good reaction. your body language said it all. I like that you let us hear it out. This weekend 2/1/25 , I am seeing Tower of Power at Thunder Valley in Lincoln, California. I saw Tower of Power at Spartan stadium in San Jose the summer of 1974 (16 years old). I am 66 now. 50 years have past, it will be great and bring back memories. One more thing off the bucket list. thanks for the cool review.
Oak Town!!! I saw them in 69 with Rick Stevens singing and they simply were great. The surprising mix of cultures delivering the very best of Funk & Soul. This is California...this is Oakland!!
This group this band has been putting out their music for over 50 years still is on tour horn section is considered legendary in the music industry all the albums all their songs are off the chain in legendary ❤
GREETINGS EARTH GUY: You're doing a nice job. You are adequately enthusiastic without being clownish, articulate, knowledgeable, and able to evaluate a song for various aspects of its production.
This is 70s music right out of oakland, california. Best horn section ever...still going strong. Will headline later this month at bottlerock, napa, ca. Dont miss it. Fan since they played summer dances at my high school...❤❤❤
I love watching watching 1st reactions to the best music in modern history! And you sir, really listened not only to the music but to the heart behind the words! Appreciate a reaction like this!
Well JM, by now you're getting familiar with some of the best vocalist in music history... Lennon, Plant, Mercury, Perry.... BUT NOBODY ever sang with more feelings, emotions, passion SOUL than this performance.
Over the Target here , bro . Keep em coming with this Legendary Band . Tower of Power = All Timer synthesis of Funk/Soul/Jazz/Blues . Never disappoint .
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is my favorite r&b song in the entire universe. I'm originally from Sacramento, California and these guys were from Oakland, California and they used to come to my town all the time. They were and still are amazing.
@@michaelasay8587I actually grew up in what used to be called Broderick and Bryte but it's now all part of West Sacramento. I graduated from Washington high school in 1972. They shut that down and joined it with Marshall high school which is now River City high school. At least, the last I heard. lol. What part of town did you grow up in?
@@michaelasay8587yes, I'm very familiar with that area. I also drove and owned my own taxi for twenty years so I know Sacramento fairly well. I moved to Las Vegas in 2009. In 2022 I retired and moved to Thailand. I still have a son and daughter who live in the area. My son is in North Highlands now and my daughter is in Modesto and of course lots of cousins and friends still live in the area. Closest I ever got to the Florin area was when I lived in Oak Park around 12th Avenue and 34th St
I always enjoy your reactions but this one is special. Tower of Power was from the Bay Area (East Bay) and was huge in the late 60's & early 70's. Rick Stevens was one of the great soul singers of that period until he went to prison and the band never was the same after that. Great memories...thank you once again. "So Very Hard To Go" by this group is also a great song to react to.
In the 70s I was getting ready to go in the junior high school. I’m trying to figure out what instruments to play and my older sister introduced me to tower of power ended up playing the baritone saxophone through high school.
It's so worth checking out the Tower of Power 40th Anniversary Concert on RUclips. I had the blessing of introducing TOP to my Dad who was a trumpet and sax player, but had never heard of TOP and was outraged that I knew about them and he didn't. This was CD one of an number of my Dad's favorites (Anita Baker, George Benson, Amy Winehouse (Frank/Back to Black), Marvin Gaye, Errol Garner, Sarah Vaughn, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Wayne Brady (his first CD Ordinary was really good), Nancy Wilson, Sadé, and others) that we had on rotation in an old fashioned boom box while he was on hospice at home in 2016.
My favorite TofP song!!!!! My 25 y/o son had a rep for music knowledge because of our interest in music- he was once challenged by someone 20 years older than he-can you name a Tower of Power song? He started singing this song. Expose yourself and kids to ALL kinds of music!!🌻
I was still too young to appreciate slow dancing in the early 70s. ..but believe you me by the early 80s. When I was in a club when this song was played ...slow dance heaven. Those of you over 50 know what I mean. LOL
You may have been conceived with this song, and need to take a shower after listening.... Romantic Soul... like nobody else..... Major Harris - Love Wont Let Me Wait
I guess you could call this song a TOP standard a song they always do on their shows. Background story is band founder/leader Emilio Castillo was in love with this woman who was some years older than him. She broke up saying these exactly words "you're still a young man don't waste your time"!
What band had the best horn section? Tower of Power was the runaway winner, with more than 50% of the votes. Chicago was a distant second place. Earth, Wind & Fire narrowly beat out Blood, Sweat & Tears for third.
yo. I have suggested numerous request to do JOE BATAAN's AFRO FILIPINO song to different REACTION CHANNELS and nobody has. Be the 1st and I'm POSITIVE you'll enjoy it and others will too who haven't been exposed to him. He's a Legend from NY and throughout the world.
That amazing Lead Trumpet line was played by my old friend that I gigged with a lot, the legendary, late, great Mic Gillette! I'll always miss him...
One of the miost iconic, beautiful trumpet leads all time
The "Close Dancing" that this song inspired in the clubs was something to witness. The women really loved the emotions expressed in this awesome song. The dance floors were packed.
Reminds me of dances at the UAW hall
TOP is still going strong. I actually used to hang out with them way way back in the day. They were out of Oakland, CA
This my friend is...."Soul Music". at it's finest.
This song on their youtube's 40th anniversary is even better!!

Had my best belly rubbing dance ever to EW&F! ❤

Tower of power was the shit back in the day

Without interrupting the songs, I might add.
I saw these guys in '73 as the opening act for Cheech & Chong.
Arguably the STRANGEST double bill I ever paid to see.
POW!!... This one hit you up side your head, like I knew it would.
When I first heard this song,it just hit my soul.Saw them in Tampa last year, they were fire!

I've always loved Tower of Power; they're from my hometown. Next you should do their song "Sparkling in the Sand."
Rick Stevens sang this back in 71 or 72.Rick also sang it when he got out of prison in 2012,still had it!

It was awsome to see you get your TOP cherry popped. .... Tower of Power; for over 50 years!.
Rumor has it that Prince said he lost his virginity while listening to this song.

The Inspiration for this song was Curtis Mayfield's "My Woman's Love"

Great reaction, great channel. Cool...
Like Chicago these guys seem to thrive on dramatic horn arrangements...
Deep dive this group please!

Seen them almost 100 times. Lost count after 70-lol. Nothing like them. Try out "What is Hip and Squib Cakes."
Music like this that I had the privilege to grow up on is the reason I can't listen to or relate to garbage of today that's passing as music.
Please check out “so very hard to go” by tower of power!!!!!!!!!
