It's cut off here but Pac ran his mouth for a while about stuff before presenting the award and all the while Snoop stood there with a blank almost mad expression on his face. This was kinda 2 Pac's last hurrah. And Metallica seemed weird as hell that night too. Just weirdness,man and bad vibes.
The nominees for that year's Hard Rock category seriously depresses me. Do the VMAs even have a hard rock category anymore? We'll be lucky to have somebody even as close to Metallica get nominated for a VMA these days. When will rock music make a mainstream comeback? I really hope it happens soon.
At the moment all genres are quietly thriving away from the mainstream, but nothing ever gets massive except highly refined chart music. The simple system that got new music to receptive ears in 1996 doesn't really exist anymore, it's been replaced by 20 competing systems, none of which are really getting the job done. I can't see things changing untill the next system comes in that dominates like the old one used to. That could happen any day now, or it could happen never. The standard of music is also far worse than it was 20 years ago. There is great stuff around but you have to really look for it and often you need a bit of luck too, i've seen amazing bands recently who would have been on a major label and sold a million copies 20 years ago but now they have 20k likes on Facebook. They play live and they sell their music themselves or through a tiny indie and success is now defined being able to not have a day job. If they buy their own houses they are kings of the castle. But your grandma will never get to hear about them and they will have almost ZERO effect of society and the world, which is very sad. Actors and reality stars have a lot more influence on the world than musicians do now. Nothing ever gets massive anymore and nothing ever breaks through into the mainstream, so none of the genres really cross-polinate but the worst thing is they all exist and quietly thrive quite happily in stasis; they never get wiped out, they never get replaced by the next big thing and start again, so there doesn't tend to be much development or progress within those genres. There hasn't been much change in sound or look of bands in the last 10 years.
When I learn how to play guitar. JK! When people stop allowing corporate America to push shit ass music in our faces, adn when we start supporting the local small time band. These new musicians are fucking garbage! The underground has some pretty good bands and artists.
