I wonder how James Hatfield from 20 years ago would have replied to this interviewer.
he wizld have awnsered with a fist
Hahahaha! Good one!
he'd of punched him in the balls.
Damn, I forget that 20 yrs. ago, it was 1995. If it would had been 30 yrs. ago, then James woulda punched him in the balls.
I didn't mean 20. I really meant to say 30 years. Sorry about that.
If drinking and not giving a shit about your family is rock'n'roll then my dad was a rock star.
What I loved about this:
1) The interviewer
2) James being a sympathic family guy
3) Lars being humble for once
4) The interviewer once again. I would never have dared to be so casual if I met Metallica!
Funny how Lars answers that question about having kids and rock etc. because years ago, I remember Mustaine saying the exact same thing. Those guys still kinda think alike.
Best interview i've seen so far :)

Ah, come on Lars, make the internet proud, and say "over 9000 times"
It's great to see Lars and James just fooling around XD! This is what got me into this band even further
Not only funny, is a good interview, showing some not well known side of their life.
Great interview!
LMAOOOO the way lars was moving when he said "Waking up at 6 A.M. iis a rock and roll in its own sense"
such characters,,love those guys..
what i respect about james is that he has been through all the craziest times as metal/rock star (booze, drugs, women, and more booze). and has made a 360 turn to change his life around. but i agree that this interviewer is quite lucky he aint interviewing a ''80's kill em all james''
I love it how James says they've been extreme their whole lives, but the very next slide gives a good view of Lars' "scarf."
Am I the only one who almost can't resist taking a peak at the subtitles, and that when I look I immediately realise that I can't read a fucking word but then the sentence changes and I go reading it again? XD
That's true Hetfield looked like a 50 year old back in the 80's and now, he really looks younger, now I really believe what drugs and alcohol can do to ya.
Waking up at 6:30 in the morning and taking them to school, that's rock and roll in a different way lmao
great interview.
They've been going for 30 years. Thank fuck they've changed- who wants to follow a band that has been writing same songs and had the same attitudes for nearly half a century. They've put the hours in, shed blood sweat and tears. If they wanna make a "rockumentary" then let them, if they want to change from thrash to blues metal then let them, if they want to make a 3D movie then let them. Change is what keeps music alive. Good on them for following what they want!
These guys are very humble
-"That's Rock N Roll"
-"The Myth of Rock N Roll..."
daaaamn,James is real,not a pose,not an image...he is a fuckin Rock God!!!!
James at the ballet lesson of his daughter! This is so cute! :)
And just imagine the scene: you enter the ballet room to see your son/daughter's dancing at a usual lesson and you end up in front of James Hetfield :D WITH GLASSES ON! :D That must be just amazing.
I actually ROFLD when I saw the clip of James and his ballet daughter XD
Great interview. Why can't some of you see the fun of it?
"The myth of Rock'n'Roll". James fucking rules!
They've been there OVER 9000 times !
I like them that way-short hair, and yes they are more mature:))
James is so humble, that is what I really like in him:)))
The interviewer (Frank) never mentioned the quality of the music went downhill. He only talked about IMAGE. Being, living "rock 'n roll" is an image. These interviews can only be very short because they're a segment in a Dutch talk show, so there's not much time to do a proper interview anyway. Watch other interviews with international celebrities to see what I mean. It's just a superficial chat...
WOW James with long hair that brings back memories lol
Ride was the epitome of thrash, they were more a mix of like prog with MOP i think. But Ride is one of the greatest if not the greatest thrash albums of all time.
This how the interview should have gone:
"So this isn't your first time in the Netherlands, right?
"No, we've been here over nine thousand times..."
"WHAT NINE THOUSAND?!?!!!11one"
I was recently at the Metallica show here in MOntreal, and although it was an awesome show and a dream come true for me, its nowhere near as exciting or entertaining as it used to be. There was no moshing permitted (not sure if that was up to Metallica or the arena administration), and apparently has the sale of beer BANNED after 9PM! Not exactly a "metal" show if you ask me. Was still a great time though :)
James can Still headbang!!! He's got the art in him!!!
AND LOOK AT IS HANDS EHEHEH JEP ITS HETFIELD!!!
I really liked to see them headbanging again with long hair \m/
They've been to Holland OVER 9000 TIMES!!!
james dont look like back in 80s, not even he have extra hair
but he looks awesome right now
De jakhalzen are the best
before they put the wig on i was looking the other way then when i looked back i thought it was Dave Mustain
Say what you want about the interviewer, but he did get some good answers out of the guys. Not too mention, we got a taste of the "Old Hetfield" flinging his hair back @ 2:58! lol!
The ending: WIGS?!?! LOL
@DudewithballsofsteeL Swedish??? Dutch Interviewer, and a great one...
I love Metallica but that interviewer is fucking hilarious. Lighten up fellows! James and Lars can take some light hearted jabs. They certainly did not look too offended to me. and they sure as hell have dished out a lot of shit themselves over the years (Jason being the prime target) , think they due to have some fired back their way.
That wigs reminded me of Mustaine's hair, only diffrerent color. Looked really funny on James :)
P.S. For those who dislike Megadeth or Dave in particular for whatever reason, don't get offended
james headbang so unique
Let's give the inerviewer some credit for asking what we are all thinking,
he could have made it a boring interview with thing we already knew ;/
Oh c'mon guys cant you see its supposed to be a tongue in cheek interview? James and Lars are enjoying it-why do people take so much stuff nowadays at face value...
@DarqTalonAzel
i know this programme, and it's not a serious programme so don't blame the interviewer, he has to be like this..
and so what, he is making jokes let him do that. I don't think that james was sad after this interview
@Wheeljakk good point man
dude, all people grow up and get older, which obviously makes us ALL mature and become less crazy as the years go by, and it reflects in everything we do, this is all that has happened to metallica, regardless of the fact they are the best band on the planet and did all the rockstar stuff in the past, you cant expect them to still do it at 50 years old?! when you are that age i bet you wont want to go out and party with women booze and cocaine.....its life mate.
metallica is back with long hair lol at the end
I respect Metallica for quitting the drink and smoke... They have the balls to actually LEAVE IT ALONE. Take note people, if they can do it, YOU can do it too. It's more Metal than having a hangover the next morning crying about it right? I used to binge daily, but figured the money i'm wasting booze on could go on better things, like CONCERTS. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
@vegunited06 The word English is written with a capital E, that is true, and so is my earlier comment.
"I'm so proud of you sweetie!" It is surprising for me to see him in the posture of a daddy.
Lmfao!
"So you guys are not rock and roll anymore?"
"Well, I think getting up at 6am and taking your kids to school is rock and roll in a different way...."
Haha! That was actually the best interview I've seen with Metallica in a very long while. Good to know they have a sense of humor still too at the end.
I actually really like this interview! The interviewer is asking some questions that millions of Metallica fans know that they'd love to ask the band as well lol
Three of them is 50+ and one in his 40s, you can't be 19 forever.
Vancouver has the best strip clubs?
lets do it!!
Nice to know. We are playing in Vancuver in a monh or so. So after the gig, straight downtown ;) Thank God im not married....yet...
Headbanging with the wig was the top laugh in this vid :D
funny moment with the wigs on .
I don't think they really "changed" their look as much as they just "grew up" like everyone else. People grow, even if you're celebrities. And honestly, I'd love to hang out with James now than I would with James 20 years ago.
shut the fuck up they became what they loathed when master came out bang that head that doesnt bang muther fucker !! they have been spoiled rich posers for almost 30 yrs, kill em all is the only real metallica, thanks to dave
***** You are a really poor guy you know that Eet Chit? Times change. And i think you are not MAN enough to take that fact. Just get a job and have a happy life listen to Metal instead of flaming on every comment like a immature guy. As a big Metallica fan since i know them I like every Metallica album on its own!
+Don Hammercocck Thought the same thing, what an anoying dick
Oh they did change their look and it was a calculated move, changed the logo, changed their sound. They sold out basically.
"but that's rock 'n roll!"
this guy is hilarious.
hahaha that was awesome telling them what needed to be said
Metallica are a great Country music band, I put them on the same level as Jethro Tull, Jethro won a Grammy over Metallica but the Academy got it right.
The incessant banter back and forth between James and the drunken crowd (Common in the Country Music Scene) Allows Lars to get back some energy, nothin' like a nice Fill followed by almost inaudible Double Bass.
In fact some country bands have the Double Bass tuned to the point where you can't even hear it!
Lars will get the hang of it though.
@vice45tocold no he isnt at least he dares to critisize artists in their presence and put them on the spot the most interviewers ask the same boring ass questions and dont interact with them at all this is a good interview because there is laughter and some less conventional things that would normally happen during an interview..
@godroxdahowse It´s a provoking interview technique, he´s using it all the time. Hence the name "jackal". Check out his interview with Katy Perry for example. To a foreigner it may appear abrupt, but it is just the Dutch manner of communicating, very direct and open minded ...
when ppl judge Metallica for their looks, and not their music. that just frustrate me!! "the haircut is a bit strange." (and thats why you guys are'nt great anymore) thats fucked up. Metallica is Gods with both long or short hair!
Ha, looks like Lars still tosses back a few.
@ladyxscorpion this guy is an interviewer, journalist, trying to get an interesting story out of them by asking provocative questions, he got it, where does that leave you? Nowhere .. sorry
Listen to that guy kids: It`s not fuckin` rock`n`roll anymore. That`s true.
So you gotta check out Motörhead, it`s still rock`n`roll.
0:35 Nine Thousand!! kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
I'm vegeta, this is from DBZ and this is an Metallica Interview, you want other thing Epicness?LoL
Oh dude, they all did. I'm not sure exactly what they did but I've read and seen interviews where they comment on such.
fuck yeah bro! metallica is the only band that known as thrash , heavy, metal ballad(RTL) and hard rock band. fuck haters!
The interviewer was telling it like it is. Metallica started to suck when they weren't aggressive anymore.
No drugs, no beer, no cigarrettes, no strippers... I can see why Saint Anger and Death Magnetic sucks...
the Interviewer is annoying. "your not rock and roll anymore" or "your not metal anymore". oh thats right i forgot,metal/rock is soppose to be about being the same all the time and dressing a certain way and acting a certain way,and your soppose to do drugs all the time and have long hair. yeah who cares wheather the music is good or not, because we all know metal is about being a conformist.
1:27 Bullshit. Taking kids to school in the morning is not Rock n Roll. It's being responsible and taking care of the family; very commendable.
As far as their later music (post-Black album), I wouldn't even consider it metal. They should have changed their name to Rockica. They started going downhill when Cliff died (RIP). Plus, they treated Cliff's replacement (Newstead) like shit with the hazing and no creative input. Real Metallica is Puppets and older.
@CBDxxx nop... as the interviewer... i liked how james looked and acted during live shows, that agressive badass who didn't really gave a fuck about anything, just played and interacted more with the public... now they just play live shows so straight to what they go, play and leave the place... james today is the mature one i understand that but that changed a lot metallica. anyways i love metallica and james is one of the persons i want to know
@pmanderson ... and others will never grow up!
Agreed completely. I've never been a fan of Metallica but can definately respect such a wise decision. I haven't regretted it myself and I can see why they'd do the same.
I doubt that playing drums is easier than taking kids to school. I mean, just wake up and take them to car/bus. But actually "playing" drums is something you gotta practice.
I think cliffs death aged him at least a couple years…poor child..
when james and lars put on that wig i was like..man..that does brings back memories. its like i'm in a time machine. but whatever it is, Metallica still rocks!
Imagine James in the 80's in the same situation! LMAO I think that guy wouldn't even get to the 3rd question hahaha Love this interview its just straight foward
It's a "what's your choice" trade-off here. Before the change they were incredible metal musicians, but horribly drunken assholes in person. Today, they are horribly weak musicians but wonderfully mature and mannered family men. With some people, you just can't have your cake and eat it too. Sorry.
I saw this on TV :D
I agree. James did get less violent. Probably due to kids and family...
Good interviewer...I wish they were more people out there doing some challenging interviews like this... Not always the same "blabla" bullshit.
all good points!
they just became professional artists
when they were young they just played and didn't think they were gonna last long.
New image nothing, they just grew up. Nice to see them laid back and funny.....and still with us, when many are note.
hOLY SHIT!
big lie:no extra women
Metallica are just awesome :D but that guy was a bit rude :/
@Elmartschi76 im dutch and not a fucking farmer i live in a city but yeah stereotypes from america
haha, if only all interviewers were as good at asking awkward questions. this guy is unreal
c'mon... i believe he does not drugs anymore... but he should at least have 1 beer sometimes
Hahaha... the interviewer's not an idiot- he even manages to get them all nervous hehe.. guy's genius... and, heck, it's true: it's not like you MUST have long hair, but nothing's as offensive as James' Flock of Seagulls haircut! Lars won't even follow the punchline and make a joke about his balding head when the guy says, 'you have no hair'! his ego wouldn't let him.. Spinal Tap's a bit more honest. However, long live 'Ride the Lightning'!
@heavycocaine dissed Metallcia by saying Iron Maiden still runs around on stage acting like children, then you diss Metallica for being loved by children when they act like adults now, you contradicted yourself. And Metallica didn't sellout, if you knew the bands history Lars has always said from when the band first started that they don't like being labed as Thrash metal and they will continously try new things through out their career, go look at old interviews on here.
@heavycocaine funny that high schools are raided by kids wearing Iron Maiden shirts as well as Metallica....and hold on....so first dissing them for acting like adults and want them to run around acting like children. And now you're dissing them for being loved by 12 year old. So you're saying when they act like adults they attract children and when they act like children they're not going attract younfg people? Wow you have the best logic in the world i just want you to know that.
@kvenz6661
Lol. You can't be serious. OFCOURSE some kind of attitude determines if you like a band or not. Maybe not off stage, but definately ON stage. I personally like the aggressive style of the old days a lot more than the performances nowadays. Not that ''Metallica family, show us some love, welcome new friends"-shit. I still like them, but not in the way I used to. That has a lot to do with that 'we're a happy family'-crap they put on lately.
What an arrogant nobjockey that interviewer guy is, if they would have carried on down the alcoholica route they would most probably be dead by now, Metallica will always Rock IMO... The fact that they experiment with new styles has got to be a good thing, it keeps things fresh, James could wear a tweed suit to a gig and Lars in a tutu and they would still Rock like nobody else!
