Theon's arc also seems to mirror the theme of resurrection in the Drowned God's religion. Theon is "killed" by Ramsay, only to be "reborn" once free. And, as we see in the final episode of Season 7, Theon is absolved by Jon, and appears to be stronger (both physically and morally) than he was before his capture. After his torture, he rises again, harder and stronger than he was in the earlier seasons. Yes, he falters and stumbles, but he is stronger nonetheless. The Greyjoys may not sow, but this show totally does!
Theon remains my favorite character, book or show. His split between the family that birthed him and raised him, Independence or submission, honor and power, ect is some of the best storytelling in ASoIaF imho
“We do not sow” is definitely a really weird thing to say proudly. Like, he’s literally saying “we don’t farm our food like normal people. We sail up to the farmer’s land and steal all his crops before gutting him like a pack of rabid psychopaths.” Like, bro, just take some seeds next time and save yourself the trouble of constantly having to risk your life for every grain of wheat you need to eat.
You're assuming that they're in a place where the land can be farmed. It's very likely that the there is little to no fertile land on the Iron Islands. Especially with how rocky and mountainious the area is.
You're a great listener. I missed that line 🤣🤣🤣. Great point! Reminds me of Neegan and the Savior's🤣🤣🤣. Just a few seeds! Man, you seen some of the land in that area🙌🙌.
Aside from the fact that you don't know shit about agriculture, you're wrong. They don't fear death as much when they're raiding and even take pride in that. Also, why would you work until your back hurts and wait for your crops to grow when you can feast like a king and even have some nice stories to tell?
"What is dead may never die" is probably a reference to H.P Lovecraft's "that is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die", from Call of the Cthulu
@@noxflo897 And they're not soldiers. They don't have discipline and strategy, so Stannis used that to his advantage along with the bigger ships of The Royal Family.
An interesting thing, too, is that they, due to all their lore with the sea, have been associated with some Lovecraft-like denizens of the deep, and their saying sounds much like the first half of the Lovecraftian couplet "That is not dead which cannot die, And with strange aeons, even death may die."
Excellent breakdwon, as always! I find it interesting that ironborn have little respect for emotional people, women, and those who make alliances and gain power from marriages and so on. And look who are the last 3 Greyjoys left: Theon, the emotional one; Yara, a woman; Euron, the one who gained power through his future marriage. Anyway, I loved all of your videos thus far, and I'm looking forward to more. I expect House Martell soon😉
The Ironborn always seemed to me like a variation on the “Philistine” category; people who take pride in their ignorance and sneer at what most other groups consider normal, civilized, or cultured. In the Histories & Lore features of the Blu-Rays, other characters also point out the Ironborn tendency to become so drunk on their perceived sense of superiority that they fail to understand simple concepts, which usually lead to their defeat.
All of this is true, which is why one of the (many) things about the series finale that seemed a little "off" was Yara's willingness to accept Bran as her king, especially when his own sister insisted on Northern independence. Didn't Yara bring up Ironborn independence as part of the deal when she was negotiating to join forces with Daenerys?
My dream for season 8 : Euron wakes up on a cross. Theon appears and whispers to him "If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention".
Hell, the Normans did it. They went from being Viking raiders to settling down, speaking French and adopting the French legal code, and outlawing slavery. What were they on?!?
The Western Frankish Empire or The Kingdom of France was so weakened and destabilized that they allowed The Vikings under Rollo to settle down and operate as an independent state.
(8:34) "the kraken is a mythical creature both in the real world" yeah tell that to the many ships in Westeros that got absolutely reked by these blood obsessed beasts.
I love the Greyjoys , they are so easily un liked because they are just so well written lol. Such a great house to have in the show, and im glad they are finally being used appropriately. I am on team Yara aka Asha all day! that woman is truly Iron Born .

Not directly. Their appearance seems inspired by the mongolians and huns (although their blades are closer to a kopesh). They looted a lot of symbols, but don't use any of their own. Their language may be more interesting to analyse.
King of Oxydents stop watching the show then, why do book fans bitch so much do you expect them to have a budget / time span big enough to add 100s of new characters, plots, sub plots to 10 episodes ?!
Divine Intervention I'm not even a "book fan" as such. I love the show, even more than the books for the most part. Just saying they messed up the greyjoy storyline until season 6. Same as they did with Dorne, surely you can agree on that one?
Aye, I agree with ya King of Oxydents! The Dornish have been played for fools in the show and made to be utterly despise by everyone watching, and as for their portrayal of Asha/Yara? Heck I have been expecting a whole lot more of her this season as a bloody POV character in the books yet only one episode and splurting about half a dozen lines! A fucking disgrace if you ask me!
darkstar6909 Prince Doran (wheelchair man in Dorne) was a peacekeeper in the books, a ruler sitting atop a beehive of people upset at the death of Prince Oberyn (the Red Viper). He has a daughter who feels she is lesser in her father's eyes because he keeps presenting her with disgusting suitors, though he never forces her to accept one (which is another reason he's regarded a weak ruler, an image he cultivates). In defiance she convinces Myrcella's Kingsguard protector to let her take the girl and put a crown on her head, presenting her to Westeros as a contender for the Iron Throne. She is betrayed, Myrcella is badly hurt (though not killed at this point), and Ser Oakenshield dies valiantly trying to protect his 2 princesses. When finally brought before her father this younger Martell is given his reasoning for trying to appear weak: he has been conspiring to undermine Baratheon rule since his sister Elia's death. She was presented with old, fat, lame suitors that she would reject to keep up appearances, as she and her brother (the boy who showrd up with his friends on Daenerys' doorstep and stupidly tried to approach the dragons beneath the pyramid) were betrothed to the remaining Targaryens. Even as far as Book 5, the Sand Snakes have only ever been a dangerous nuisance, not a power on their own.
Jaime gave the most accurate, honest description. Their king (Balon) scolded Theon for buying a golden chain instead of stealing it (Theon could just lie, but he was never a great thinker, neither are ironborn though). Overall, a cancer society who did nothing good for Westeros. But damn, Victarion book chapters are pure heavy metal. Everyone freaks at White Walkers, plays politics, struggle to survive or undergo complicated character development. Victarion just sails in and murders everybody.

Rebirth. Theon pays the "iron price" with Ramsey and "dies" now that he is dead as Theon Greyjoy he is reborn as Reek. When he is about to be killed by Euron he runs away, because is pride as Theon is dead and what is dead may never die. The Greyjoys themselves die and are reborn by the hardship of their constant conflict. The Greyjoys who fight in roberts rebellion die off because they sought confict, and they are forged like iron by the "impurities" being killed off in the family line. Theon represents the ways of the drowned god (for the reasons listed above) and Euron represents the storm god. Euron gains strength from destroying and Theon gains strength from being destroyed. Similar to how the ocean becomes for fearsome when acted upon.
The thing I find interesting about *Euron is that he isn't just some sadistic boy villain who bursts into impulsive violence like Joffrey and Ramsay without thinking of the long tern repercussions.* He is *unpredictable, cunning, dangerous, truly feared but also respected by the ironborn and therefore has actual authority and knows how to play the game long term;* he's *what Joffrey and Ramsay aspired to be.* When *he is with the Ironborn* he *appeals to their nature of the 'Iron Way' and love of battle* so he makes grand promises along with sex jokes. When *he's with Cersei he's swaggering yet charming.* He *knows how to appeal to different groups of people and manipulate them;* he can be *charming when necessary.* He's also *skilled at fighting and a great naval commander which makes him a very interesting villain to watch.* In comparison, Joffrey was a petty violent fool who was a coward when it came to actual fighting and danger. Ramsay was a sadistic monster who brutalized people for amusement which would blind him from looking at the long term consequences (Unlike Roose who knew that fear and torture alone wouldn't work and therefore tried to strengthen his allies by marrying a Frey and married Sansa to Ramsay so as to gain the support of the other Northern houses).
I expected a mention of how "we don't sow" represents that the Greyjoys don't grow things, they don't plant or nurture. They take. This video completely overlooked this aspect of the motto and their personalities.
The Greyjoys are like the Romans in reverse. Whereas the Greyjoys are powerful at sea but not on land, the Romans were excellent soldiers but poor sailors.
I'm waiting for house Martell. A family that is fading in power, and, despite not as interested in inbreeding like the Targaryen, are declining in health as well. Oberyn was the healthiest of the current family heirs - elia and doran noted for frailty.
Great video! Could have used some source from the books though. It's good to incorporate the show, of course, but I think you should use books for the Martell video, if you do one. It's your stuff, though, just a suggestion. Still a terrific analysis. Thanks! :-)
I hate the guy standing in front of Theon in this scene. They know what they are about to do and he's just laughing this off. Personally Theon is my third favorite character after Jon and then Robb. Ever since he was being belittled by his father for his clothes bought by Stark gold I've always gravitated to his story because he just wanted to be a good commander. Yes, he did some terrible things but everyone has done terrible things in this story... EVERY character has. Even when I saw him showing the dead farm boys as Bran and Rickon I didn't believe he could do that. I really want to believe he will have a redefining moment when he rescues Yara (I didn't think that fighting one of his bannermen was all that of a redefining moment as it just felt too quick from the point that he made his mind that he was going to right his wrongs) and somehow he'll regrow his member.
Also the Ironborn are fucking bad ass as drowning terrifies the fuck out of me. I can deal with any other form of death but being suffocated in something so nurturing for the world and how it envelopes you as you sink is just as truly terrifying thing to think of. BTW im not afraid of swimming or water in anyway, just the drowning part.
Great video. Now that the Tarlys are all but destroyed, please do a video of them...after all, Randyll Tarly was a badass and the only one who defeated Robert Baratheon in battle.
Yara story to Theon rocked me, and I never forgot it. "You were a terrible baby, do you know that? Bawling all the time, never sleeping. And one night you just wouldn't shut up, screaming like a dying pig. I walked over to your crib, I looked down at you. I wanted to strangle you. And you looked up at me and you stopped screaming. You smiled at me. Don't die so far from the sea."―
Their ceremony to drown and come back is completely nuts.... But epic at the same time.
it's a good thing theon doesn't have nuts
Andrea M "Completely nuts" What do you mean? It's the Westerosi version of a baptism.
Last Baratheon during baptism you aren't deliberately drowned, just dipped in water, unlike the Ironborn ritual were drowning is an essential part.
apparently baptism used to nearly drown you anyway so
A finger In the bum

@@jiryaC PTSD doesn't mean he's weak - but that he can regress, but he does redeem himself.

When *he's with Cersei he's swaggering yet charming.* He *knows how to appeal to different groups of people and manipulate them;* he can be *charming when necessary.* He's also *skilled at fighting and a great naval commander which makes him a very interesting villain to watch.*
In comparison, Joffrey was a petty violent fool who was a coward when it came to actual fighting and danger. Ramsay was a sadistic monster who brutalized people for amusement which would blind him from looking at the long term consequences (Unlike Roose who knew that fear and torture alone wouldn't work and therefore tried to strengthen his allies by marrying a Frey and married Sansa to Ramsay so as to gain the support of the other Northern houses).
your Game of Thrones Symbolism Videos are great!
Theon, you had it coming!
I love these videos, please keep them coming!
Man I love how the went into "depth" with this video, get it? With the closeness to water?.....and the sea? .....krakens? 🦑
Been waiting for this one!!!
One of my favorite families in the lore, utter badasses of cutthroats and iron warmongers. Euron is such a bastard but a excellent villian
Indeed, but only in the book.
Tough survival. Theon Learned it the hard way.
I expected a mention of how "we don't sow" represents that the Greyjoys don't grow things, they don't plant or nurture. They take. This video completely overlooked this aspect of the motto and their personalities.
Love these videos! Please keep making them!
No mention of Aeron?
I know he was in only 2 episodes but it would have been nice to include some information on him.
I thoroughly enjoy your vids. Really, thanks for the effort
Shout-out to Victarion Greyjoy, you won't be forgotten Vicky, even though the show did
The Greyjoys are like the Romans in reverse.
I can't wait for a Martell house symbolism. I love these videos.
Great video! Could have used some source from the books though. It's good to incorporate the show, of course, but I think you should use books for the Martell video, if you do one. It's your stuff, though, just a suggestion. Still a terrific analysis. Thanks! :-)
I think I should be insulted at that description of the Iron Islands. They were filmed where I live 😂
nice job guys
I love this channel so much!
For anyone wondering: the music used in the background from 1:36 to 3:48 is called "Fall of the solar king".
These are awesome videos!
The Greyjoys say they do not sow, and yet they reaped what they have sowed.
Indeed, they got what they deserved, and I hope that Drogon will wipe out the rest of them.
love these videos, glad i found your channel!
I would love it if you started doing some of the smaller houses, like the Mormonts and the Tullies.
Stannis defeated them at the sea
This was a well researched video, thank you!
Theon: **takes Winterfell from the Starks**
Boltons: it’s free real estate!
Please do house Martell! I'd love to hear you narrate the story and origin of their house!
House arryn T_T
Carolyn agreed, and the eyrie in the books is better
Carolyn We also don't know much about Jon Arryn, since he's dead at the start of the series.
@@augustopinochet6359being honest House Arryn isn't that much better in the book.
Quality video as always...now the s7ep7 title makes more sense in relation to theon...he's effectively a water dragon (kraken) and a wolf. 👌👏
