      Noah Orakwue The Tyrells in the books (like Willas and Garlan) contradict a lot of the points made in this video. This is definitely only show specific.
      On Garlan Tyrell, I hope he's a POV in the next books. He's one of the best non-POV characters in the series.

      She knew and was involved in the plot to kill Joffrey and which means she was willing to let Sansa take the fall for it (which definitely would have led to her death). Also, the Tyrells were responsible for the smallfolk of KL starving and then played hero by bringing food when they decide to marry Maergery to Joffrey. This family is despicable.

      Starr Lykes I kept thinking that too when replaying their wedding scene....it doesn’t make sense when you think about it to not let her in on the plan. Olenna could’ve killed Margaery carelessly. I’m not sure how the writers didn’t catch that. It made Olenna seem stupid and careless in that scene when she’s always been portrayed as cunning and smart quick witted. It’s a bit of a plot hole to the scene.

      I'm not so sure. Not going off the books (partially due to my ignorance, partially due to the show diverging more and more), while the heads of the house may be dead (by fire) and anything remaining may at least mostly die (by ice), I wouldn't be surprised if there's a hint by the end of the story that something Tyrell may stand a chance to grow out of the ashes and receding of the frost - the 'dream of spring'. Even to the point of future royalty (I doubt the series will have a 'single winner' ending). However, yes, I'm certain that at least almost all focus on them is done. But they were not to be a 'winter' house. Things are too chaotic and will get too oppressive.

    I don't think Cersei 'outsmarted' Olenna at all. Olenna just couldn't fathom how deep Cersei's rabbit hole went. It's hard to play a game of 'wits' when your opponent is insane, stupid, and utterly unpredictable. It would have been better for the Tyrells to either annihilate Cersei entirely (which they aren't capable of) or never set foot in king's landing.

      they have to - their entire validity was dependent on the targaryans. when the last dragon was wiped, old feelings of discontentment that they are lords of the reach began to resurface. they have to make a bold move. because they fought against baratheons and is the only targ supporter left! they're prime for picking and replacement. they need to get in the game or they know it's a matter of time before they get usurped considering how stannis' wife is a florent and they firmly believe the reach belonged to them. they may gather support and uprise against the tyrells. sadly, it was so sudden they had limited options to work with.

    I think that you judge Tyrells too harshly in some aspects, their benevolence wasn't merely a facade, through some interactions with various characters following Olenna and Margery I've noted that they indeed share a feature of kindness, sometimes suppressed by calculative and shrewd persona. They did want power and advancement of their family but were never unnecessarily evil, harmful or cruel to anyone. What I want to say - I think Tyrells were in fact good people. I wouldn't mind having them to guard my back or befriend /drink with most of them. One man they ever poisoned was Jofferey - biggest, meanest cunt in westeros. In my opinion Margery (but Oleanna too) were perfect monarchs and perfect mesh of personality traits for ruler in that cruel society - intelligent, calculated, shrewd, patient, friendly, positive and ruthless. A perfect wife and queen. Btw this is high quality vid, good material you have here guys. Thumbsup.

    I love the Tyrells SO much, especially Lady Olenna. While there are many amazing, strong women in GoT, the Tyrells are definitely the embodiment of "traditional" female strength through cunning, intelligence, and manipulation. A lot of women these days seem to balk at this in favor of brute force, but I wonder - why should we have to prove ourselves by being strong in the same way men are? Some of us are, and that's great... but most of us aren't, and that's great too. Suggesting that women are ALL as physically strong as men is not only blatantly false, it's also reinforcing a very patriarchal sense of worth. The Tyrell women were just so damn cool and they never once had to pick up a sword to get what they want. RIP :(

      Wendigo Heart - 👏 well said, and whilst I adore characters like Arya and Brienne, I still love seeing women that embody the traditional 'feminine' strength; it's so much more easier to accomplish, respect and look up to whilst also elevating/empowering the matriarchal role of women.

      I absolutely agree. Tyrells are my favorite house in the GOT. Also making women "strong" by making them the same as men just diminishes femininity and natural strengths that women posses. It's like saying, "You are not good enough as long as you are not the same as a man". But no, women are just as good and I love how smart and canning Tyrells were. They were good players in the Game of Thrones. And they weren't cruel which is why I love them.

      but it's also good to have both types in both gender because cunning, manipulation, poison... have for too long in history be considered as cowardice and in that way, as being peculiar to women. But a lot of men are good at it and have this kind of temper, as much as som women have other qualities usually and wrongly associated with male ones

    To be honest, out of all the major houses in game of thrones, house tyrell is and will always be my favorite one. Not the starks, even though they touched and broke my heart. Not the lannisters that impresses me with their wits and strength. Not the targaryens, that always surprises me and excites me. Tyrells have every bit of qualities that the other houses have. They played the game of thrones, and they played it well. They won, even when the game was over for them. Rip to my favorite house.

  • @keneticam
    @keneticam 6 лет назад +1111

    The Tyrells were like the modern day progressives of Game of Thrones. Accepting and even blatantly nonchalant about Loras' homosexuality(and homosexuality in general) and they were primarily a matriarch. The Tyrell women were the leaders when so often it is the men who are the dominant force. They were very adept at acclimatizing to change and they seemed to be fine with it cause they're the type to move along with their environment, while still gracefully maintaining their true selves. They held a level of familial bond and genuine compassion(even if they did fake it sometimes) that none of the other houses really possessed(other than House Stark). Easily my favorite house. They held a perfect balance of cunning and morality. It's sad to see them go.
    And side note, Cersei did NOT outsmart Margarey. She outsmarted the high-sparrow. Margarey was just unfortunate enough to get caught in the crossfire. Even with the faintest hint, Maragery knew something was amiss, but the High Sparrow's arrogance got in the way. That's one of my biggest annoyances with Cersei. She's not as smart as she thinks she is, and I wish people would stop giving her more credit than is due. It doesn't take a genius to blow up a church. Anyone could have done that. If Margarey had been given enough time, and if the High Sparrow hadn't dismissed her warning, she might have actually been able to save them all.

      Progressives? No, not at all.
      Matriarchy though it may be, the society of Highgarden is knightly and based upon chivalry. People in the seventeenth and eighteenth century courts of Europe didn't care very much about homosexuality.
      The most liberal society regarding homosexuality in GoT is Dorne.

      Judgemental Budgie Tyrells are genuinely good natured and fair but in the end Lannister’s are the more appealing house because of how controversial their members are (Incestous, blowing up the sept, torturing and killing the Martells and the atonement lady, Joffrey killing Ned and threatening Sansa etc), and that’s what attracted viewers. The Tyrell’s were my favorite house too. Margaery was smart enough to know that trouble ensued in the Sept, she was simply caught in the crossfire.

      cadmaniak The show has scrapped them to give Cersei some semblance of a fighting chance. It was one of the dumber gaps in logic amongst the sea of stupidity in s7. Now, the reach will most likely go to the Tarlys; my theory is that Randyll will die but Dany will spare Dickon if he bends the knee and hand him the Reach, following the example of Aegon the Conqueror. Burning both of them would just be plain stupid, since the reach will then be left hanging up in the air, the most fertile and rich region just forgotten like the Riverlands. Better to leave it in the hands of someone else to milk it of whatever resources it has left.

The house is scattered and they have many enemies now but the people still love the Tyrells and Tarly's may die from Davy's wrath and the Tyrells could rise up again.

    I wish they would've included Willas and Garland Tyrell. For those who haven't read the books they are the two elder brothers of Loras and Margery and not at all like Mace and Loras in the sense of being idiots obsessed chivalry and jousting. Garland is a good natured, recently married (in a happy relationship, rare in Medieval times) who excels at strategy rather than single combat like Loras, whom we meet for the first time in a Sansa pov chapter where he is training against not one, but four men at arms to simulate real battle. He is kind to Sansa during her time at King's Landing as one of the few people who sympathize with her. Willas on the other hand very much takes after his Grandmother as the eldest son and heir of House Tyrell, crippled at a young age during a joust with Oberyn Martell, Willas has taken to reading and studying as pastimes and is recognized as intelligent by almost all, Olenna stating that he is the exception to the rule of "Tyrell men hitting each other with sticks". He is able to correctly guess at other's plans and prepares to defend the reach with most of his family away. He is the one in the books that is offered up as a grooms for Sansa instead of Loras, giving her the chance to be the Lady of Highgarden.

      Garlan and Willas were the only Tyrells I liked. The Tyrells may not be good militarily (ironic considering they have the largest army) but Garlan is the only competent general in their family. He has the knightly courage needed commit an aggressive attack but also the strategic wisdom (the likes of Ned Stark, Tywin Lannister, and Stannis Baratheon) to stand his ground and hold the line against attackers.
      There's also the whole bit where Willas was most likely having a relationship with Oberyn after Oberyn broke his leg.

Heck he even was okay with Margaery sleeping with Renly to get pregnant. And honestly Sansa would have been a good match as friend. She is sweet, accepting, a bit naive but really pleasant to be around, plus they shared similiair intrests. Would Loras have been faitfull to her? no way, but he would have threaten her extremely well, and in Game of Thrones that is pretty much all you can ask for in a mariage. Plus i have no doubt in my mind that after they got children Sansa could have taken a lover (hopefully Margaery)

    I like the Tyrells but its a shame they didn't stick a bit more to the books! Like Loras is a badass Knight in the book one of the best in the seven kingdoms and his brother Garlan is even better and is probably one of the most genuinely nice people in the books!

      Show Loras did pretty much all book Loras did except join the kings guard (which haven't really done anything in the show) and the battle of dragonstone (where he got injured) Plus book Loras for the most part is a arrogant hothead while show Loras (and Margaery) both gained Garlan's kindness.

    Quick correction. The Tyrells fought for the targaryens during robert's rebellion not because it was more likely that they would win but because it was Aegon who had named the Tyrells as Lords Paramount of the reach and Wardens of the south passing over many other houses who had closer relations to the Gardners. The tyrells fighting for the targaryens was out of no loyalty not opportunism.

  • @GoldenRose116
    @GoldenRose116 6 лет назад +57

    You know they Tyrell’s and Greyjoy’s are also somewhat of a foils if you think about it.
    The Tyrell’s love beauty and are quite feminine (even the males), they are also extremely smart and stronger then most people would think.
    The Greyjoy’s hate vanity and feminine clothing. Unlike the Tyrell’s they overrate how strong they are, and aren’t a real treat until Euron Greyjoy
    They Tyrell’s are despite their ambition extremely close (closer then all the other families) while half the greyjoy’s hate each other. The only one that have some loyalty to each other are Yara and Theon, but even that pales compared to Margaery and Loras.
    They both fought in the great war and basically had the opposing sides. The Tyrell’s fought for Renly (and for them self in a way) but the Greyjoy’s wanted to take the throne their self. Not to mention they Greyjoy’s took the house of the Starks, the Tyrell’s saved them the Lannisters house.
    However both of the houses are pretty progressive. They are together with the Dorne pretty much the only houses that treat woman as equal to man. And are accepting of homosexuals.

    • @SwobyJ
      @SwobyJ 6 лет назад +12

      Yeah the Iron Islands, Highgarden, Dorne seem most accepting (or at least tolerating) of male homosexuality, though in various contexts. The others in the South seem more at least disapproving, and I can imagine King's Landing to have both the most occurrence yet most judgement about it (being the location of the Sept). Highgarden and Iron Islands wouldn't be very publicly accepting either, only Dorne. The North is probably disapproving, but perhaps like Iron Islands, life is tough enough without laying mob judgement. As well, they have their Old Gods and Drowned God influence (or rather, lack of Sept influence; Iron Islands may have closest to 'penetrator/penetrated' relationship and shame). Only Dorne in Westeros is where male homosexuality wouldn't be a public embarrassment, but it still might be somewhat queer. The Wildlings are probably fine with it as long as you fight for what you want or you submit if a leader has an agenda of quick procreation. The best is Dorne, the worst is anywhere with highest influence of the Faith.

    • @GoldenRose116
      @GoldenRose116 6 лет назад +12

      i think high garden is pretty accepting, even publicy. I mean Loras never seem to feel any shame in being gay, and they even supported the only gay king. Heck the army of High Garden even almost attacked the faith for having Margaery and Loras because he is gay. even Olenna doesn't care about it, and uses it to moke Tywin and the high sparrow, even Mace doesn't care. There is no question that Dorne is the most uncaring about those things but i do believe that in High Garden it is socially acceptable.

      in a way they're different because they grow up in an isolated culture in an island, they sort of agree to that because there's few of them. women have to fight to be efficient when they need to defend themselves. if not, half of the population is defenceless and helpless.

    • @InsidiousJazz
      @InsidiousJazz 5 лет назад +4

      @Emily Barclay Well, deciding who rules based on gender is a stupid model period, regardless of whether you pick men or women as the master gender. Your reproductive organs tell us nothing about your competence as a leader.

    • @InsidiousJazz
      @InsidiousJazz 5 лет назад +2

      @Emily Barclay I don't, at least as an ideal. People are prone to unjust biases but that doesn't mean that we should embrace those biases. Disempowering half of the population is not only immoral but also ineffective since there's plenty of smart people with worthwhile things to say from both genders. That's why I think suggesting that matriarchy may be an effective model is wrong, since patriarchy is also an ineffective model.

    The Tyrells are one of my favorite houses alongside the Starks. They were very ambitious, intelligent, cunning, and manipulative(At least the Tyrell women were)like the Lannisters but they genuinely loved each other in the family and were sometimes empathetic to certain people as well. For instance, even though they were using Sansa, I think almost all of the Tyrells felt some genuine sympathy for her because they knew that if the girl had married Loras than she would’ve been more safer and happier in Highgarden than in King’s Landing and she would be with a kind, chivalrous man who would keep her safe. Gay or not, Loras would’ve treated Sansa very well and would maybe grow to have concern, affection, and care for her as either a friend or as a little sister along with Margaery, whom I think would also like Sansa in a way too. And I think Olenna would also think of her as one of her grandchildren as well if she had entered into the Tyrell family.
    I also believe that the Tyrell women had some sort of affection towards the men they married. For Olenna, she probably grew to love and care for Luthor very much despite manipulating him to make decisions because she did say to Margaery that she had a hard time accepting his passing when he died. And for Margaery, I think she was somewhat fond of Renly and liked him well enough in the end. I also think she genuinely cared for Tommen as well and liked him the most out of the 3 “Baratheon“ kings she married because he was a sweet, compassionate boy. Plus, she never put Tommen in danger in any of her schemes and the results of them always benefited Tommen and made him gain something and not just herself. I believe Margaery truly liked Tommen well enough in the end.
