    Just a fun add up, house Stark wasn't allways about honor...in fact the Starks have a long and bloody history.
    So the solemn and honorable-to-a-fault Ned Stark was result not of his northen legacy or his Stark blood, but of the role Jon Arryn paid in raising him.

      Came here to comment about this. Brandon and Rickard Stark, Ned's brother and father, along with Lyanna, were accurately what Stark embodies. What we have as Stark in the books' timeline is the joint product of Arryn's honor (Ned being raised in the Eyrie) and Tully's values (family, duty, honor). And it's very wrong to compare present-day Arryn's bastardization with present-day Starks when it comes to describing what Arryn is supposed to represent as a family.

    • @Marina-db7ou

      Ellie G exactly like Cersei’s kids cause their Bartheons in name but not really since their Lannisters. They don’t embody Baratheon. Ned’s siblings also had wolfs blood so they would act out freely unlike Ned who was very controlled and thought everything through first.

      Robin actually grows into something worthy of the name Lord Arryn. By the end of the series, he sits at the council meeting in a relaxed and somewhat “above it all” matter. But when the time comes to choose the king, he doesn’t offer to take the crown. Either he doesn’t care or he has finally understood what honorable behavior is.

    Lysa's neutrality during the War of the Five Kings felt to me like it had a purpose beyond protecting her son; I thought she was really hoping for Catelyn to die in the war. Any sisterly love was long gone on Lysa's end and she saw Cat only as a rival for Littlefinger's affections. Of course, the fact that Catelyn had five healthy children while she suffered miscarriages, stillbirths and had only poor, frail Sweetrobin bred some serious resentment on Lysa's part.

      There's a theory that Lysa didn't actually miscarry, and instead she aborted all of those pregnancies because she didn't want to carry Jon's baby (she hated Jon and he didn't care at all about her, he kept rapping her because he wanted a son) and that's why Robin is so sickly and mentally challenged, his mother tried to abort him

    • @lasttoparty7570
      @lasttoparty7570 5 лет назад +94

      @@TabbyeLynne I don't think that theory's true. I think Lysa Arryn is not the Cersei Lannister type; she would have wanted lots of kids, no matter who the father was. I think she really wanted a child, and became more unstable as the years went by mostly because of her fertility trouble. It's implied she blamed her father for it; she conceived just fine with Littlefinger, but Hoster forced an abortion on her. The fact that she had so much difficulty having a healthy child probably made her think that something had gone wrong inside of her and deepened her hatred of her family.
      Also, Sweetrobin doesn't seem mentally challenged to me; he's a brat, absolutely.

    A Tully never should have married an Arryn. After all, as the saying goes, a bird may love a fish, but where will they build a home together? I think Starks are not really honorable. Ned was just raised by Jon Arryn. The Northeners acts more like wild-lings than medieval nights. :) Yes, they had the whole pack of "the north remembers", but I think their general culture is not a honorable as Ned. His elder brother act brute, violent and impulsive. So I think the whole Starks are honorable only came from Ned because he was raised by Jon Arryn and then that how he raised his children. :)

      I think that the Starks have a kind of honor that just does not work well with the frippery and stratagem of people in the South. The Northeners are plain spoken and, to put it charitably, naive. However, everyone in the North comments that as long as the Starks are ruling the North (as opposed to the cruel, psychopaths the Boltons) there will be peace and safety for everyone.
      If you think about it, they are the oldest and most Noble house in all of Westeros. They could've taken over and unite all of Westeros, instead they are content to live in the North. Considering their history of thousands of years, that is a duty that is very honorable.
      Their saying: "Winter is coming" is their sacred duty to the realm of men. It was the founder of House Stark (Bran the Builder) who built the Wall to protect all of Westeros from Whitewalkers. Even after many people have forgotten that the WW are real.
      The Northeners are the first people that suffers the ravages and marauding parties of wildlings, the first to suffer and defend attacks by the WW (I'm not talking about the Night's Watch, but the Northern region in general), and the brunt of long winters. There must always be a Stark at Winterfell, and I believe this has a spiritual/mystical meaning as well as political. Hopefully, in the last season they will divulge what it means (I suspect something to do with Starks having the bloodline of a WW).

    I know we are short on Arryns but Lysa is a horrible choice for a character study on them. She didn’t want to be an Arryn and was married because of the alliance between the Tullys and the Arryns and Starks. She resented her father for making her abort her baby with Littlefinger; she resented her sister for being the object of Littlefinger’s affection and for being better liked and I can’t think of why but she probably had some issue with her brother too. She was married to an old man who she didn’t know because her father needed the alliance and Jon needed an heir. She’s a horrible choice to use for a look in on the Arryns because her personality and outlook is very much tied to growing up being a Tully at Riverrun prior to and during Robert’s Rebellion.
    It wasn’t so much being an Arryn that made Lysa crazy it was the build up of feeling as though everything in her life was against her and then finally feeling as though she’s free to do what she wants now that she has power and her husband’s dead. And Lysa has always been bad at seeing through Littlefinger - as a child at Riverrun she seriously couldn’t tell he preferred her sister to her.

    • @josharguello4313
      @josharguello4313 5 лет назад +72

      Your comments on Lysa are totally accurate, but due to shortage of true Arryns, there aren't enough characters that are as fleshed out in the show as Lysa. Jon dies at the beginning, Sweetrobin is just a child with no true power or influence over the plot, and Harold Hardyng was cut from the show. That being said, I found their observations to be pretty accurate when it comes to the nobility in the Vale as a whole. Almost every house in the Vale (the Waynewooods, the Corbrays, the Royces) are extremely proud of their Andal ancestry, they are all arrogant, lofty, they perceive themselves as "honorable" and above it all, but in reality they are all schemers who want to use Sweetrobin and Harry the Heir as pawns for their own personal gain. That being said, Jon Arryn did embody everything that was good about House Arryn.

    I definitely think Ned got his ideas about honour and living that kind of way from Jon Arryn the Starks do what's right even if it compromises their honour whereas even House Tully is actually more honourable and dutiful. Lysa never embodied either House Tully or Arryn. I wish we knew more about Jon Arryn but of what we do he seemed like a great man.

    • @denisdiderot6779
      @denisdiderot6779 5 лет назад +21

      I like how everyone judges the Starks by the standards set by Ned when in reality he was more of an aberration as opposed to the norm. The Starks are characteristically unruly and reckless, much like the North generally (Stannis noted to Jon Snow that Robert Baratheon would mention how hard it was to rule them, even with Ned Stark, whom they loved), embodying what is called the "Wolf Blood". Brandon and Lyanna had the Wolf Blood, which explains the former stupidly marching all the way south only with a few friends, and the latter absconding a married Dragon (to be fair to Lyanna, Arya is said to be greatly like her which should give an understanding of how wild and untempered she was, much like her older brother). To illustrate how atypical Ned was, he was nicknamed the "Quiet Wolf" whereas his older brother was nicknamed the "Wild Wolf" and Lyanna the "Wolf Maid". Catelyn, was first betrothed to marry Brandon, noted how wild he was and how Ned was someone people never spoke of at all, since he was the quiet sort.
      Starks from history:
      King Theon "The Hungry Wolf" Stark: a gaunt man who was known for constantly being at war. If my memory serves me correctly, he also was King as the Andal invasion was occurring, defeating Argos Sevenstar-while allying with the Boltons-and then sailing to Andalos with Argos's body tied to the front of his ship and destroying hundreds of villages, as well as septs and capturing forts, and displaying the severed heads of his victims on the coastline to deter his enemies. Imagine Ned doing that!
      You also had King Brandon the Bad, someone from whom much isn't known but with a name like that, I think it's safe to assume he was not exactly a good guy.
      And then there's King Brandon "Ice Eyes" who recaptured the Wolf's Den from slavers originating from the Stepstones during a long, cruel winter. He stripped the slavers naked and gave them to the ex-slaves chained up in the dungeon.
      I think you get the picture...The North is a hard place to live in and the logic goes that it's inhabits are hard people who've adapted to living in it. Ned Stark is more Arryn than a Stark when it comes to honour, though there were honourable Starks before him like Cregan Stark.

I would say it's not really Jon Arryn's fault that he hasn't had children.

      The Targaryens should have even worse problems due to inbreeding, the analogous brother-sister and cousin marriages of the Egyptian pharaohs caused all sorts of problems, Tutankhamen being a famous example. It evidently is a world where genetics and incest work differently. It could be that the Valerian blood of the Targaryens makes incest less bad for them. Which could explain why incest is taboo for people who aren't Targaryen. Kind of like how some video games have fantasy races with resistance to poison or cold, they seem to have resistance to sickness in the books, and possibly that includes genetic deformities.

    I did sort of feel sorry for Lysa. Women who are forced into arranged marriages and feel no love for who they marry feel a sense of dread and unhappiness. This is what partly yet definitely led to her anger, paranoia, and disconnection. She wanted to be with someone she loved/lusted for and those feelings were denied by the world around her. (Granted you can argue about the decisions she made, but there's a feeling of despair that came with her life.)

    You gotta remember that true honor gets you nowhere too. Ned Stark, being the honorable man that he was, told Cersei that he knew about her secrets and that he planned to tell the king. That got him killed. Jon later channeling that honor and honesty told Cersei that he'd already bent the knee to Dany and that nearly lost her support. Of course she plans to betray them all anyway.

    • @Lite727
      @Lite727 2 года назад

      In the context of it all Cersei is the stupid one because this is NOT a game of thrones anymore it’s survival 101. The era of plotting and scheming has died, that was another time completely and only Cersei is the only one who still hasn’t evolved from that yet. Jon is self aware enough to admit honesty was the thing that got Ned killed yet he still remains on telling the truth because he’s right. Lying isn’t a productive art form. It gets nowhere. It ties into Littlefinger’s philosophy that chaos is a ladder and many who climb, fail and never try again. It’s pointless in a time where the fate of the world is at stake. That attitude has lost its purpose all-together. Cersei betraying them would only backfire on her because either two things happen. Dany and Jon die and join the Night King to March against Cersei, or they win…… and still March for Cersei. She if anything is the one out of touch and her betrayal backfired on her like I just said.

    I think Robin/Robert is really a Baelish not an Arryn. He is small, cowardly, weak and sickly...unlike Jon Arryn who was strong, fit, and a warrior. But exactly like little finger. It makes perfect sense for little finger to plant his seed in a garden of power and explains how sick lysa's relationship is with her son. He's little finger junior, not the lord of the vale at all. That is why the house is so different from its reputation. With Jon's death the bloodline died with him. Lysa always loved Baelish which is why she had so many miscarriages and still borns because those were the children of Jon and we all know that Westeros has moon tea for birth termination. She only wanted Baelish's child to replace her original child with him her father forced her to abort with moon tea. The baby she wanted with the man she wanted so poetic justice would be to do the same to Jon's offspring. There aren't any Arryns left. Petyr played the long game. Jon knew about Petyr and employed him anyways as master of coin at Lysa's behest probably in an attempt to keep them apart. Ultimately she did get the chance to conceive with Baelish as they had the chance to plot against Jon. The incentive to kill Jon for her would be to unite father and son together in the vale keeping the titles money and power. Petyr was small, sickly and weak as a child.
