    This man never gets any light. They skip right over him. Russell Simmons is spoken about, Suge Night, Master P, Luke etc. This man needs to be acknowledged!

    Thank you. Thank you. Thank you JayQuan for allowing the guest to speak uninterrupted, which is an anomaly on RUclips. Shout to Mr. Williams for his keen insight on the record business.

    I’ve been waiting for this one. I’ve heard his interviews with Kraze but this one sheds some interesting info also. Great stuff as always. Ty should be held in the same regards as Russell Simmons

    Amazing interview. All the information on radio stations was super informative. I do remember that To Be Your Man video coming out, and not really getting it. I just figured its what got played.

  • @syrtyce

    39:35 I love how candid he is. The song he’s referring to is “to be your man” and indeed it was horrible. The video for this song was filmed in my hometown of Detroit MI. I’ve always have been curious as to why it was filmed there. There’s a scene in the video where they show a movie theatre marquee and Kane and the chic he’s with walks past it.
    That was the old Norwest theatre on GRand River. Kane’s arguably one of my all time favs but that song was so terrible I haven’t seen that video in 30 years and honest down want to go and look it back up lol. I’ve always wondered how in the hell did that song was released and got a video
    Taste of chocolate, Prince of Darkness and Looks like a job for I’ve heard Kane say he just put them out to get out of his deal I’ve always wondered why he’d put out those which had a ton of album filler just to get out of his deal. Because that killed his buzz. Arguably in 89 he was the top dude hands down

      It was 88 when Kane ruled but your right about everything else!

    • @syrtyce
      @syrtyce 3 года назад

      @@yeahisaidit5633 respect but no it was 89. 88 is when”long live the kane” came out.
      89 is when his second album dropped and he pretty much took over LLs “NITRO” tour with the hot tub 🛁and all.
      To further prove my point. Kane was the MC asked to do the Batdance remix. Now why that wasn’t released not sure.
      But I’ll off we this. Who had a better case of mainstream and street status at the top than Kane in 89?

    Dope interview! Here's a thought: How many record execs can reference the specific lyrical abilities of the mcs on their labels? To hear Fly Ty speak on metaphors and similes is deep. I can't speak on the business practices because I wasn't there but from what I can see, this brother was a Hip Hop dude who respected the culture. There were no weak mcs on his label. Not....ONE.

    Thank you JayQuan. This was a great interview, so much history behind the music. I hope you can have a sit down with Monica Lynch from Tommy Boy records. I believe if anyone have labels a run for their money it had to be Tommy Boy. From De la Soul, Naughty by Nature, Apache, House of Pain all the way back to Afrika Bambataa and the Soul Sonic Force. They were in tune with streets when they also tapped into the latin/black fusion of Freestyle/Club music genre with TKA, Information Society. Would love to hear how Monica Lynch, Dante Ross, Funkenklein, Joey Gardner...all these names were intertwined at the time.
    Salute to you from Santurce Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 via Bushwick Brooklyn.

      I believe that he was speaking about Sittin On Chrome

    • @sgtcreasegrease
      @sgtcreasegrease 3 года назад +1

      @@TheFoundationhiphop Man Sittin' on Chrome was dope. There were samples galore on that album. Born to Roll and the title track are the most west coast sounding joints on that album but its still fire. NYC wasn't complaining about any of the west coast cats sounding like NY and using samples in their shit and Cypress hill had as much respect out west as any other popular groups from the west coast did. I rest my case.
      Not referring to you with all this btw just in general, the whole thing with Ace "selling out" is stupid, imo.
      Edit: Wasn't the beat for Born to Roll taken from an east coast group? Original Concept or something?
      Shit, NYC was home to a lot of 808 based music that would influence the west coast but especially down south... Lots of people don't seem to know their history.

    Why compare your label with Def Jam? Def Jam was a new label when they brought LL on as their Pioneer artist. Rubin and Simmons started Def Jam because they were involved in a situation that was not panning out for them. They didn't have the funds to support ten artist! So of course, this label here, was going to outpace Def Jam as far as record sales. Def Jam's concern wasn't to outdo another label in sales, however they were concerned with building up BANK, which LL was a very lucrative asset for that. He made it possible that DJ was able to bring on another great artist. In the early days, DJ didn't have many artists at one time, but the ones they had, were great; they brought in high numbers.
