Jayquan the Historian :) ….. you never disappoint… I was a kid at 9, living in Gardena , CA, broken home, thinking I had the family disease of Huntington’s disease like 2, it consumed me, then one day, my mom bought me the album with Rappers Delight , I stared at the album and read it over and over while it played and my life immediately changed :) Hip hop saved my life .. I’ve lost 9 family members in my lifetime , survivors guilt is real .. but here I am , enjoying another lesson . Thank you !!!!!!!!!

And remember, this was two months after the Disco Demolition stunt at Comisky Park in Chicago, IL where fans trashed and blew all of their disco records and went into a riot where it caused the Chicago White Sox to postponed the game due to the incident. That was when disco was out, new wave music was coming in, and rock music was taken over. When “Rapper’s Delight” came out, it defined the hip-hop genre and saved dance music. If you look at other songs from that day, “My Sharona” by the Knack was the biggest hit of the year in 1979, and it was not a disco song, it was a rock song that blew disco out of the water.
I really appreciate the work he puts in on telling the true history of the music and culture of hip hop. This stuff has never properly been documented and to see the work he puts in is awesome. I remember radio before hip hop and the first time I heard it (North NJ native) It was a incredible time period.

Ah Man I was just going trough my Subs and Unsubscribing to Anybody talking about Hip Hop , My Love since I first heard that Recording because It’s not about the Art anymore with these guys , it’s about rumors ,gossip And who got whacked , So I cleaning house and Brother J Popped up and Restored My Faith in this thing of our. I was 11 at the time and I bet if you got All us Old heads in a Room we could still recite every word . I didn’t get a chance to get RD at the time because I am from Tennessee and we were still trying to figure out What this was and Then Kurtis came out With the Breaks and that was my First 12 and that was my Christmas Present 1980 , Salute to you Brother And Krs One Stiil the Goat😂🎤

I'd never thought about how new Chic's Good Times was at this time. Any documentary on hip hop needs JayQuan's perspective. Would love Jay to chime in on the conversations about the disputed birth and founding of Hip Hop. Would love Jay to chime in on the debate about whether Hip Hop was exclusively created by FBAs. My opinion: Bambaataa is the most important figure in origin of the culture. Herc was doing his merry-go-round routine already. Kool DJ Dee and Disco King Mario were playing parks and rec centers already. The b-boys were already rocking with Dee and Mario before getting with Herc. Flash pushed the music forward as did Theodore. The graf writers existed. While I don't believe Bam stopped gang violence, I do believe he pulled the elements together and defined it as a culture. In the 80s, Bam deflected praise from himself and credited Herc. But clearly Bam was the big picture thinker that turned this from a collection of scenes to a culture.

That was my first rap record I ever bought in 1979 I was 12 years old. I had bought the whole album but I appreciate the video man.
