When you take the Trans Europe Express track off the album & play it on 45rpm instead of 33 1/3rpm on a turntable, you hear Planet Rock.
I remember the first time I heard Planet Rock it was played 107.5 WBLS by Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on a saturday while ride in my father car.I told him to turn it up and he said what this junk?But as soon as I heard Party People,Come On and get funky new it was a hit!

I’m from Boston and was apart of the Boston Invasion. I was in a group produced by Larry Woo and Gordon Worthy called “Finest Hour” Polydor/Polygram Records signed by Vivian Scott-Chew in 1988 and hit the street in 1989. Great discussion with the genius Arthur Baker. You should have and interview with all the following present; Arthur Baker, Michael Johnson, Larry Woo, Herb Jackson, Brooke Payne and of course The General Maurice Starr. This interview would really tell an amazing story about how it all came together for Boston. Let me know if you need help getting them all on the zoom call.

wow, the lengendary Arthur Baker, I was hearing his name since I was 14yrs old back in 1982, love his work. Streetwise Records brings back good memories, I had a fun childhood and Arthur Baker's music was definitely a big part of it. Thank you Jaquan for this interview, I finally put a face with the name,; never knew how he looked. lol. He's a nice guy.

Thank you again JayQ for making this interview possible. I love this stories how they create a record, especially with the 808.
But I missed a bit the part of the club scene where Arthur Baker was huge influence too. Example: He bring the tapes fresh from the studio to the clubs like the Funhouse NYC and let Jellybean played it to the crowd and watch how they react before it came out on records. And Arthur used the scratch on the record "Scratch Goes My Love" done by DJ Whiz Kid before on Party Time label "It's Yours" by DJ Jazzy Jay.

Major gem here Jay. Great questions. Baker & Robie were responsible for at least 6 different music genres that were based on their sound. I wish we could have gotten Baker's reactions to them as well as the Shep Pettibone and "Animal" Diaz Planet Rock mastermixes.🔥. Sorry Arrhur but I will always recognize you and Robie as a team like Niles Rogers and Bernard Edwards.
Roland should give Baker & Robie lifetime royalties from TR808 sales. Sorry LL, but 'It's Yours" was really the first Def Jam recording LOL. Another nugget, although Baker & Robie are credited as the first to draw our attention to the 808 sound. It was really Marvin Gaye who was the first to do it. Using it on the entire Midnight Love album. Mindboggling how new the drum machine must have been yet Gaye and his team showed complete mastery of it and the confidence to record an entire album with it. Wow you really went into the nuts and bolts with Arthur in this interview. Good stuff! I don’t know if Boogie Down Bronx was taking jabs at Arthur. I will say that BDB caught my ear big time because it was electronic and freeze force’s style was laid back. It wasn’t hype or loud like Soul Sonic Force and other rappers I heard at the time. Plus because of how chill his flow was then you could hear fresh lines “cooler than the water in a swimmin pool.” BDB is not as big as a staple as planet rock but it came out and went into its own hip hop direction.
