As a legacy player who transferred their character. You have a legacy chocobo. Your character has unique cutscenes in ARR. First one no ride with the twins you teleport in as in the trailer. Where people remember it is you from 1.0. A tattoo on your back of the twelve. A lifetime cheaper subscription. Plus your name in ARR’s credits. 1.0 was not fun people made it fun if you had a good linkshell. Oh and that miqote that little girl a flower. That is Minfilia and her adoptive mom.

The game slowly got better in 1.0 after Yoshi took over. The 1.18 update really changed things for the better and the avg population went up. There were new things added and the hype for the relaunch had a lot of people grinding to max out characters before the swap. I remember that I had my Weaver as the last class to get to 50 and was grinding mats like crazy. I agree 1.0 was bad, but it was a very different experience depending on if you were a 2010 player or a 2012 player.

On top of that I died quite alot 😅as PLD bc I thought a tank could hold every. To be honest 1.0 was horrible. Later patches were better but not by much.

Koji Fox actually had a pretty large hand in development compared to most localizers. He unironically helped write a lot of the early lore for the game as well as basically acted more like an advisor than a localizer when he had nothing to do. He is very respected in the community because of it. I don't know if you've seen but he is also in the Primals band as a vocalist and has written a lot of the English lyrics for the music in game.

Despite this, it was still an extremely fun time. Because of the required grouping, you tended to get to know people better and it wasn't uncommon to group with the same people as your leveling and get your own community growing that way. The difficulty also made it so that even the smallest of milestones felt incredibly rewarding. I miss it, even if I don't have the free time for that style of game anymore.

FF14 originally used essentially the same battle system as FF11. Which was almost purely done through macros. You wouldn't have a hotbar and you wouldn't have slotted skills with keybindings. You would enter a menu with all your abilities and activate them through that menu. FF11 was notorious for having to basically create macros for everything if you wanted to play effectively. Which would become the substitute for hotbars.

  • @Nobrev

the thing about remaking what 1.0 would be in today's FFXIV is that, even with all its improvements and fixes and upgrades, the game is actually still so choked down by the original 1.0 framework that even small things like inventory slots and cosmetics are difficult to fit into the game. The issue isn't that 1.0 was too bad to bring into the modern game, it's that the time, effort, and strain to the game far outweigh any possible good or advantage it would bring. The overall way of thinking regarding this is that looking toward the future of the game is just more important and a better option than trying to dig up the past.

I like how Koe is confident that burning the Original FF14 to the ground was the Plan B, but it wasn't at all the plan, but he kept thinking it was, and was so smug about it. Plan A and Plan B are the same, keep the original game running with patches, but Plan B also included making the game from ground up at the same time.

  • @KurodoDragon
    @KurodoDragon 5 месяцев назад

In hindsight option B seems like the obvious choice, but at the time it was a gamble, and they'd have to invest even more money and time into rebuilding something that might also flop. They could have just as easily picked option A and just pulled out of the online gaming space. MMOs are very risky after all.

This is very true about studying the competition. I don't know about current WoW, but when it first launched, WoW had literally zero innovations, but what made it so popular is it didn't try to innovate, they literally just looked at everything their existing competitors were doing and adopted all the pieces and mechanics that were popular with players. That let WoW start with a huge bang back in the day. I imagine, they've since had to innovate quite a bit to remain relevant, but looking at what your competition is doing right and copying that is definitely a proven winning strategy.

Nomura really isn't a bad developer. I really dislike that this misinformation keeps spreading. He has been a fall guy for SE corporate and even other producers for a while now. He is a very, *very* talented developer if you actually follow the development cycle of the games more closely you can actually see that he is simple *not* responsible for a lot of the failings that are attributed to him.
Hajime Tabata junked a lot of Nomura's work on ffxv and tanked that project. Nomura had actually completed the script and many of the assets, but Tabata threw it almost all out and started over which is why we got something so drastically different when SE corporate forced Nomura off his own project. Tabata is also the one that decided to deliver the game as DLCs and then failed to deliver them all. Tabata is also responsible for the mess that is the altissia section and the poor characterization of Luna Freya. Not to mention the fucking hallway that they had to add a skip button to. Nomura's concept for the altissia section was much more fluid and dynamic based on what little we know rather than the extremely lackluster fight we got with effectively a skybox. Furthermore the delays were caused by corporate's decision to constantly change and invest in new engines(something that is also mentioned in this interview, the crystal tools engine, and later the luminous engine) and this was extremely unfortunate for many reasons.
With KH3 again corporate forced Nomura to change the engine further delaying the game. Additionally you can data mine the game and find assets that seem to be for alternate plots that are much more gray, but which are much better than what we got, especially in terms of theming and cohesion. Especially the Frozen level. The game files show that there was likely an alternate boss fight there. And certain things like larxene just appearing and building a fucking ice castle despite her ability being lightning? Yeah. That doesn't make much sense. Unless originally they were going to have Elsa be the villain with an internal conflict fighting between the darkness and light within herself. Then all of the sudden the theming and elemental effects make WAY more sense. But that was probably nixed because it would have been too controversial to have Elsa be anything but a perfect and good character. yay. There are other things to support this theory, and similar changes that can be found throughout KH3. And playing it you can just feel the frustration of the dev team as they just struggle to try to create something good and cohesive and it's like you can tell they are struggling more and more to be invested as the game goes on until the shove the clusterfuck of a plot right at the end and call it a day. Admittedly the game before this DDD also had issues, but Nomura was on a LOT of projects at that time and as far as we can tell(and this is basically just a guess based on tidbits that he's talked about in interviews saying he wasn't even directly involved in writing a lot of the dialogue for that, that was left to the writer almost entirely in that game) he had a lot less involvement in DDD. Then trying to reconcile that with KH3 in addition to the development hell they ran into resulted in the mess we currently have. And the phone game only had a few devs working on it total, which is why they had no resources to innovate there. Again Nomura simply wasn't given the resources to succeed there. Honestly it's amazing they even made a game when you really look at that. Something you will learn more and more, the more you follow SE is just how much corporate likes to shoot themselves in the foot with mismanagement. Something that again, you can even see in these interviews. (I really hope the new CEO changes this and allows devs to have the resources they need to make great games)
In FF7R Nomura was against the "crazy kingdom hearts style story contrivances" with the other project heads actually being the ones pushing for it. Nomura is on record many times as wanting to be more faithful to the original game. A game which, btw, he worked on as the monster director officially, but which he also had MUCH more input into, for instance, preventing the entire team from dying during the bombing run on Midgard aside from cloud, assuring the team the death of another certain character would be enough to drive home the games themes of death and loss. That means the later third of FFVII original played out differently due to Nomura's input. So even back then it's a stretch to say he was 'just a monster designer' Also, have you seen how creative some of those monsters were in FFVII? Some of those designs were WILD for the time. A few even hold up amazingly today(just look at the remake, the monsters are not the pain point, and the hell house fight which everyone said would be impossible to adapt was put on full display and turned into an EPIC spectacle. And who was primarily in charge of the monsters initially again? Oh, that's right, Nomura)
There are even interviews where other SE devs defend Nomura as being great to work with and helping to solve problems that had stonewalled entire teams and some of the best and brightest at the company for weeks like it was nothing in just a few minutes. There's one in particular that stands out that I'm thinking of where a separate team was working on something like that and the story goes that even though it wasn't even Nomura's responsibility they brought the problem to him(and whatever it was would have been a 'we can't ship this' unless it's solved type of problem) and he pulled out a napkin and over the course of a lunch basically talking with this other dev worked through the details and jotted down a solution to get the development moving again.
I don't care if people want to give Nomura flack for something that's actually his fault, but I really, really don't like when people just blame Nomura in general as they are usually referring to this stuff that he simply isn't and has never been responsible for, or just vaguely throwing shade at Nomura and not specifying anything concrete. I think it's very unfair that the company themselves and even Nomura himself is willing to be the fall guy for this stuff just so the company and other directors can save face. Nomura is a truly amazing and talented developer and I really feel the bad rap he gets is extremely unwarranted. I'll see if I can find that interview.

I wonder if there is going to be a documentary of why FF16 was such a flop

Documentaries are only made about factual things, if you weren't aware 😄

The only way XVI was a flop was because it did not fix the hole Square-Enix dug itself into with the previous few games like Forspoken. The game exceeded its sales expectations, made back its budget, and even sold extra. Hell, Rebirth is a "flop" more than XVI was, going by sales metrics in Japan.

Oh lord we are already doing this lol. From what I've seen XVI did pretty well. It just ruffled feathers in the community since it was such a departure.
Which the FF communities expectations are always really weird. Especially with how heavily exaggerate the praise is for Rebirth.
