    This video shows the last steps to finish the 'leather wrapping of the VW dashboard. I would have liked to wrap this dashboard in one piece, but unfortunately is impossible...it was necessary to break it down in 14 pieces doing several cuts and sewings.
    I would like to add that 'leather wrapping procedures' I show in these videos are not unique or a general rule...it is just a way to carry out this project...another car trimmers would show different methods.
    I hope you find it useful!
    Cesar

      Good things, come to those who have patience. I built a flying v electric guitar with a matching fitted hard case and it was worth every bit of 4 months of off and on labor. Mostly on. This guitar was my first (and probably my last) guitar build I'd do. So, anyone can build anything for the first time if they just watch enough RUclips videos for inspiration, and have a AAAAA project come out of it... I did!

    I have a sweet custom molded fiberglass dashboard for my 81' camaro race car, that I was thinking about Hydro-dipping carbon fiber (I already made the huge tank needed), but after watching this guy with leather, I want to get a sewing machine..... Damn. Thanks for the awesome videos...

Amazing how a human can communicate so precise with simple hand gestures to know and to teach the viewer where are the key spots. So soothing and therapeutic to watch. If I had the artist' contact info, I would send him my 1303 dashboard and do it again to watch it again. Love it! definitely a save.

    I just watched the whole video, although I‘m a retired dentist and will never do anything like that myself! But I can appreciate the work of of a true professional with obvious attention to detail from my professional experience. Beautifully done! And please, please: never ever ruin the hypnotic trance of watching your work with some awful noise in the background like so many feel they must do now. Thanks for watching the videos! I am a self-taught upholsterer and I'm still learning everyday this beautiful craft.
      I have three 'basic courses' for sale. I did them as a test to measure the response of interested users. In fact, no much purchases, people want free videos, people don't buy. That's why I have most of the basics for free on youtube.
      But, I have decided to do something different, more advanced videos. My son and I have ready our first for-sale video course of a series related to 'how to easily leather wrap a steering-wheel' by using a practical method. Most of the basics, such as 'stitching patterns',and other ideas, etc. are free on youtube. This first course includes two big videos, one of 4 hours, and the other of 2 hrs, plus 4 support videos of half an hour each one, and a big pdf manual. I will be announcing it on you tube pretty soon.

      La tapicería es un oficio manual muy entretenido...hay muchas cosas que tenemos al alcance de la mano en la casa con las que podemos empezar...una silla un mueble, una mesa; hacer un forro para el carro, para el ventilador, hacer un maletín, etc. hasta llegar a los carros.
      Gracias por seguirme en el you tube!... y que Viva Mexico!

      tengo ya una singer vintage creo es de 1926 segun la red a esa le mande poner un motorsillo y ya quedo lista justamente hace un ratito me puse a juguetear con ella la otra es una industrial que compre en una casa de empeño es una pfaff y la verdad , simplemente estoy empesando con la singer hasta perderle el miedo jijiji y quiero sepas me fasina el hacerlo aunque sea con trozos de tela al comienzo te agradesco tu tiempo y estamos en contacto cesar muchas gracias

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  9 лет назад

      +Adrian Esparza Hola Adrian, Me da mucho gusto que esté empezando a practicar el manejo de la máquina. Estas máquinas antigüas Singer son muy fuertes...son eternas. Empezar practicando 'en blanco'(significa sin hilo) tratando de dominar la velocidad del motor. En el lado derecho tiene una palanquita que sirve para regular el largo de la puntada...ésta se mueve de arriba hacia abajo en la canal o abertura....si usamos una lima redonda pequeña podemos limar un poquito en la parte inferior (3 a 4 mm) de ese canal, permitiendo que la palanquita se desplaze un poquito más hácia abajo y asi lograr un poquito más de largo de puntada.
      Para tapicería puede usar una aguja más gruesa (la altura es la misma)...puede ser una 18(medida singer) hasta una 22. Si vamos a usar agujas más gruesas, entonces hay que cambiar el plato inferior por uno que tenga el 'hoyito' mas grande...sólo es asunto de quitar dos tornillitos y ya. El 'pié de arrastre' también se puede cambiar por uno que tenga los 'dientes' un poquito mas altos (dos tornillitos en miniatura sostienen esta piezita). Si va a hacer este cambio hay que comprar la'placa base' junto con el 'pié de arrastre, porque deben coincidir las canales que tiene la plaquita.

    • @Cechaflo

    Is the adhesive you used for this the same as what you've suggested before? The yellow contact adhesive (DAP Weldwood)? If so, do you ever have issues on items that get direct sunlight/heat? I thought that glue "reactivates" with heat and am worried it will release when sitting in the sun all day at work. Also...do you get fumes when it heats up? Thanks!!

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  8 лет назад +1

      +JEG's Garage This yellowish adhesive is used to stick formica in carpentry and it works Ok for leather...it does not heat up...just some bad odor because of the solvent(thinner)...when it dries it sticks very hard...I'd recomend to test the product two or three times beforehand to gain more confidence. Check the Hog Ring Automotive Forum...master trimmer Richard (Concours- Interiors) seems to be using same product...check the pictures in the middle:www.thehogring.com/auto-upholstery-forum/auto-upholstery-forum-group4/lets-talk-shop-forum3/concours-interiors-latest-ferrari-project-thread2642.0/
      If you subscribe to the forum, you could start a thread about the best contact cements/adhesives useful to do upholstery...I do not know much about these products in USA...I'm located in Mexico and trade marks are different...I tried out the DAP-weldwood from Home Depot-Mexico, because my friend who is a carpenter told me that it was the same product to stick leather...as mentioned, he said do not confuse this product with the 'white carpenter's glue'...this product is used to stick formica.
      You are welcome!

      +Cechaflo Thanks once again for the reply! I will check the forum out. The Weldwood seems to get good reviews for use with leather and materials like that. I just read somewhere that you can heat it back up to reactivate it, and that made me think the sun might screw with it. I feel ok enough to give it a try!

      Heat dryers are mostly used to stretch vinyl and other synthetic materials. It is useful to get an even surface considering heat shrinks the leather material.
      I'd better take advantage of stretchy side of leather and use a hair dryer at the end to erase some wrinkles.

    as always awesome videos, i was wondering can any leather or any vinyl be used for car interior as long as it is flexible

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  8 лет назад

      +nikita hirsch Yes, of course! ...Any 'Flexible vinyl' can be used for the interior...In case of leather, not any...it is advisable the use of 'automotive leather' because it has a sealer/lacquer on top surface as a protection.

    I've been doing upholstery for about five years now. I've watch 100's if not 1000's of videos. Your tutorials have been the best I've ever seen. Without saying a word, you're more descriptive than anyone else on RUclips. You should be very proud of yourself! You're an amazing craftsman! I spent this entire weekend watching hours and hours of your videos. Like so many others have said, I'm addicted as well. I became bored with the usual seat cushion here and motorcycle seat there, jobs. I've always been afraid of getting into the car interior jobs. You've inspired me to reconsider. I'll be working on my 1985 El Camino I purchased a year ago. I only have one question. What type of contact cement are you using? Some have suggested Weldwood contact adhesive, original yellow. What do you recommend? I'm from the East Coast, USA. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge. You're an inspiration to many whether you know it or not. God Bless

      +Stitch Boucher Thanks a lot for your valuable comment!!! As a matter of fact, in most of the videos I try to apply the useful 'visual method'...in other words, 'watch carefully, understand and learn upholstery'. The main purpose of these videos is to give ideas, so the interested viewer could learn something and improve it on his own way.
      I've used a yellow glue which comes in cans or bottles...You could buy online, check:

    Really nice work and very informative videos. I noticed at some points while doing the french seams that it doesn't sound like your machine is running and your right hand is never on the work piece. Do you do a lot of this work by hand turning the machine?

    • @Cechaflo

      Usually, some jobs require to sew at a very slow speed, so it is necessary to move the machine 'by hand'. A 'servo motor' would be very useful in this case.

    Mr Cechaflo i wanted to ask you which type of glue you are using to glue the leather or vinyl on the dashboard. I am from Cyprus and the glues we are using, because of the high temperatures we have, can not glued well the vinyl/leather on the dashboard. Could you please suggest me a certain brand or type of glue i can use? Thank you in advance!

    Mister Cesar hello ,I hope you are good in your health ! I want to ask you how and you don't heat the leather with a hot air gun before you glue it ? I have seen some other videos that they heat the leather ,here is no nessesary?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  4 года назад

      The heat gun is useful to hurry up the drying time of glue. It coul be used if necessary.
      As leather shrinkis with heat, I sometimes use the heat gun to erase some wrinkles. I should use the heat gun a certain distance to avoid burning of material. A very hot day with strong sunrays are also useful. Much more for vinyl material.

      +Justin Ford Interesting question! ...If I would have devoted 100% of my time, it would have taken a week at most, provided that, it were only the wrapping of the piece. It took me two weeks, because I had to do some repairings and adjustments, such as, peel off/sand some areas of plastic dashboard to let other pieces fit in, considering the thickness of leather material.
