Hi Dan. I stumbled across this searching for techniques to reskin a dashboard. First off - great job. You made it look easy. I wanted to share my 2¢ since I've done this project using real leather. If you're viewing this video looking to do this project, consider doing the following: 1. Remove the dashboard from the car. You won't have to deal with the tight quarters or the windshield and you certainly won't be huffing contact cement fumes. This allows you to work from angles not available in the car and it's sometimes helpful to get access underneath. 2. Use an automotive grade contact cement. The regular stuff you buy at the hardware store will not hold under a hot summer sun. Ask me how I know this. 3. Work slowly and methodically. Cousin Dan gives a lot of good advice about planning ahead in this video. When you're cutting material away, be absolutely sure you have enough left to cover the area desired. This is especially important around compound curves and where trim meets your covering material. Bunching your material will make the trim stand out when you reinstall them. In a few areas, I actually trimmed away some of the dashboard with a rotary tool to accommodate the thickness added by the skin.
I would advise to research as much as possible to make that decision. There are too many considerations. UV ratings, leather grades, vinyl stretching properties. The old dash's material - can it be covered or need a complete tear out? Is the original dash able to recovered? Are there condensation issues? Climate issues? A 4 way stretch marine grade vinyl (Apollo or Sierra perhaps) may work well but you have to remove the entire dash because it's hard to work with but has great longevity. There are many sites, such as oemautofabric, midwestfabrics, yourautotrim, probably a hundred others that have about any material you need. Also, I think it was mentioned in the video, but clean that old dash and when you think you have it perfectly cleaned, clean it some more. It cannot be stated enough - any little spot missed will not take and will bubble and become undone in the summer. @@taz24787
Some things I learned doing research after watching the video: Use heavy duty and high-temp adhesive (like 3M - vinyl and rubber 80), and use a material that'll hold up to UV rays, heat, and dings/scratches (like marine vinyl). Will be attempting my own recover soon

I don't understand some negatives review about this kid did. Many of you not even capable to clean a car. Most kids today waste their time on computer playing games or iphone. This kid learning something and doing what will make him successful in the future while many of your kids will end up doing drugs from being bored. Good job young man I like what you did !
Unbelievable...... Great Job....... Out here in the Arizona desert the sun makes short work of cracking a vinyl dash. They make custom fitted dash rugs that look like a retired persons car, but your job is worth the extra work. You probably know it already but newer dried contact cement can be reactivated with that heat gun

I came here because I just got a 30 year old Nissan Sentra that my brother bought new and has had it all this time. It drives like a dream but man she needs a makeover ASAP. I'm trying this. I read the comments so I'm searching for some Marine vinyl now. Excited to try this pn Buckit soon.
The glue to use is contact cement, and for ones that don't know, it is imperative you let both tack up to the touch before you put the two pieces together. The glue sticks to itself when almost dry.
I watch alot of videos on the tube for different ideas. I'm a fiberglass man myself and did my dash full custom. I was cruising along and found your video, gave it a shot. GOOD JOB. whether or not your methods will last a long time or fail the first summer, is anyone's guess. My kudos goes out to the professional way you carry yourself and complete your edit. I wish you could have done a nice before and after split screen still at the end. the way you formed your vinyl was very slick. I know guys that can't beat the wrinkles no matter what....And we're all in our 40's!!! keep up the good work. .......side note: I'm agnostic but even I appreciate the awesome positive response you gave to the biblical reference troll bullet shot at you. Looks fantastic! My 240sx dash is bad and i may try this. I wasnt aware a heat gun could form so nicely. My dash is a bit more complex of a shape but i think it may still work.
@ClearWater7.62 not with a PU vinyl, i used a thin wrap material from Amazon with a leather texture and it looked "ok" i was only able to find a sheet large enouht to do the top portion of my dash where it was cracked. I sanded/bondo'd the cracks but unfortunately it still cracked again underneath the wrap material and you can see faint crack lines. It looked ok for a while. But need a better solution still. Pretty sure im gonna tear it apart and figure something else out. If i could get a good deal and lucky in the junkyard id like to swap an infinity or BMW dash in or something lol
You should mention it is important to use high temperature adhesive. Headliner adhesive works well. Normal contact cement will turn to goo after a few a hot days
Looks great. One thing though, IF you have passenger airbag. Just over the airbag you need to run your knife under the leather to weaken it so that the airbag can pop it if you have a crash. Otherwise, the whole dash will explode if the airbag has nowhere to go
Hahaha, I'm just imagining that now. Yeah that would probably be a good idea. Just cut the fabric side maybe and leave the vinyl. Try to to stretch it too much or it will tear though.
Bruno Danese I don't think these 944s have airbags. Judging on the steering wheel, there is no drivers side airbag, so i'd doubt there is one on the passenger side.
It doesn't matter anyway. The force of an airbag explosion would rip through even leather. I had someone tell me the same thing about vinyl and I chuckled.

Install a dash cover instead. It's hard plastic better than the original and you don't have to do all this disassembly. It's from a company called Coverlay, even though this is a very nice job.
Fantastic job Daniel! Would like to know how it's holding up though. It looks like you used regular vinyl fabric. I imagine it may have already started cracking by now. For me, I'd go with marine vinyl, as this is much easier to work with, more durable and holds up to the extreme heat. It's more expensive, but well worth the cost, as it will last much longer than regular vinyl.

Buddy, you have balls. How did you ever decide to just peel off the old cover and think that gluing on a piece would even work? And it looks pretty good.
The glue is Ados F2 and to make things a little easier, you can have a spray bottle with turps in it. Once its tacked up, give the surfaces a light spray with the turps and it will give you some room to move until the turps evaporates...
Yip, it will soften up the Ados just enough to move it around a little bit until it evaporates. Tacky Ados will stick like crap as soon as it touches the other surface so handy when you need a little compliance in some areas...

That is a really great job, I'm about to do this myself. Clearly the quality of the material you are using is a whole lot better than the cheap junk the manufacturer uses. Definitely better than new.

I have an 02 buick park avenue that I want to restore but change the interior color to it, watching a few other youtube videos on painting plastic car trim and your video on refacing the dash is giving me the courage to try this my self. Good tutorial there! Clear and concise, no waffling! I am about ready to recover the entire dash on my Ford pickup which is cracked and blistered by sun. Was quoted by a "pro" to do the job about 10x the price of the material and glue which I already costed out. And he still wanted me to remove the dash and deliver it to him!
This was perfect. I'm redoing the whole interior in my 1986 Cutlass Supreme and I'm trying to keep it as DYI as possible. And the leather idea is way better than fiberglassing.

Likely no, because of the fact it is a 20+ year old car. If it has sat in the sun enough for the surface to crack, chances are the plastic is cracked too and easy to crack. I recently removed and replaces an FC RX-7 dash and now I'll have to remake it (no longer available). Not to mention, taking dashes out of 2 door coupes sucks because of lack of space.
Darien Williamson It really depends on the construction of the dash. I've removed the dash in '90-'93 Accords at least 6 times now with at least another install to go. Luckily, the construction of that dashboard is not one that promotes cracking or really any wear. It holds up quite well. Anyway, your video was great Daniel and the end result was even better.
Koito rob Lol I probably wouldn't either, even relatively. I hope I won't have to do it again. But depending on the 4 door, I would say it is generally easier because there is more space to maneuver after removing the front seats. Coupes typically have lower roof lines and are defined by their cabin volume. That's really what I meant, especially if you aren't removing the windshield.
i like how this car has a solid plastic shell under that outer sheet of vinyl or plastic dash pad. unlike my car where ill have to shave down the high spots and fill some in, and glue over the old dash pad, nice work!

I'm not an expert at all, but wouldn't it have been an easier task if you removed the dash from the car? Great video, just wondering how I'm going to apply this to fix my motorcycle seat since it has a hole in it patching would look like crap.
Likely no, because of the fact it is a 20+ year old car. If it has sat in the sun enough for the surface to crack, chances are the plastic is cracked too and easy to crack. I recently removed and replaces an FC RX-7 dash and now I'll have to remake it (no longer available). Not to mention, taking dashes out of 2 door coupes sucks because of lack of space.
Darien Williamson It really depends on the construction of the dash. I've removed the dash in '90-'93 Accords at least 6 times now with at least another install to go. Luckily, the construction of that dashboard is not one that promotes cracking or really any wear. It holds up quite well.

Koito rob Lol I probably wouldn't either, even relatively. I hope I won't have to do it again. But depending on the 4 door, I would say it is generally easier because there is more space to maneuver after removing the front seats. Coupes typically have lower roof lines and are defined by their cabin volume. That's really what I meant, especially if you aren't removing the windshield.
Pulling a dash is a pain in the ass, no matter what car or how old. Period.

i like how this car has a solid plastic shell under that outer sheet of vinyl or plastic dash pad. unlike my car where ill have to shave down the high spots and fill some in, and glue over the old dash pad, nice work!
