    PTSD from my 80's cabover days! Short spring front end is part of that hammering. Hanging all that weight on the tail turns the frame into a diving board. If you stick with it at least get modern air ride seats, with adjustable shock and isolator. Until then keep your expensive sunglasses at home. The first time you leave them on top of your head its gonna hurt! Twice! Modified floating, with pressure on the shifter let off the throttle quick and push the clutch only an inch or two, it should slip out of gear,, then float it into next gear. Did it for 30 years that way, well worn eatons are stubborn.

    Fact on the Eaton Fuller 5 speed needing clutch for EVERY gear change. Had to replace a similar trans in a C7500 water tender at a small fire department. It might have had 45k miles on it, and it was trashed from untrained drivers trying to float it. According to what I've heard, double-clutching for gear changes may even be prescribed by Eaton Fuller. Good on you for already finding that out.

    Your trailer has most of the length in front of the axles, your truck has a long distance from the axle to the back of the truck. If that truck axle is capable to handle the weight you plan to add you at least need to beef up the suspension and then it will ride rougher when you do not have a trailer and weight on it. That is were air suspension is awesome because you can run the pressure dependent on the load. Get the trailer weighed and then you can figure out what your axle can haul and decide what to do.

    the axles on that trailer are to far back, it was made to hall tractor, so all the weight was at the back over the trailer axles, load the trailer up and see how it rides before you make any choices, you also need a raised hitch to lever out the trailer it looks like, that would help.. that air bag hitch would help alot too

  • @jreyman
    @jreyman 3 года назад

    You should add an air-ride seat on the passenger side of "Lincoln Hawk," as the next pre-roadtrip upgrade.
    That trailer, empty is distributing most of it's wight to "Lincoln Hawk." If the trailer weight was carried over the rear axle, the ride would be better. (The balance of weight may also shift once the trailer is loaded. How the weight shifts, you'll just have to try it to find out.) The trailer is using the chassis overhang as a lever, and the axle as a pivot point, when you go over bumps, thus making the ride not so great. Most diesels don't fly over mountains when they start getting loaded down. Diesels produce mostly torque, which is about getting work done, not going fast.
    If you start looking at a Class-A tractor, skip the Peterbilt, and go with the KW. Both are built by parent company Paccar, and have exactly the same truck chassis, drivetrain, and suspension designs, but the interior in the KW is much better. (Peterbilt vs KW is like GMC vs Chevy. While standing near one, what you see may be different, but everything you can't see is the same.) If you find an older one KW/Peterbuilt, look for a CAT C-15 under the hood. You'll have more than enough power with that. CAT power is the best. (Ignore the Cummins and Detroit fanatics.)

Diesel out here is at 6$ per gallon, petrol is at 8.3$ and it has been a lot more. I have a one car garage (which is 2.8x6.5m, so no working on cars in there) and a further 500sqf of shop space, which is about as big as a home shop gets here without being a farmer. And than there is Mike, who has 2 massive boats, 3 project cars, a box truck bigger than a lot of peoples houses, and buys another humongous trailer to haul his stuff about. How the flip does he have the space for all this, let alone the money to fuel all the stuff, since it seems nothing he has gets out of the single digits mpg-wise. i may have been born in the wrong country..

I’m not rich by any means, I bought my property for under $200k, and its outside of any school districts or any city/county services, so my taxes are only $63 a year. Everything I own, I got cheap either broken or needing to be rebuilt from the ground up. I’m cheap, and simply do everything myself to save money. Is that not an option where you live?

      @@adamr9215 I looked it up, even our king doesn't have 2300 acres. there are farmers and companies with that much, but not unless you make money of the land. right now the average house in NL is just below 950sqf, last year the average house went for $406k. you'd pay about 2k a year for that in municipal taxes for that.
      having said that, i've designed and build a large 5 axis cnc mill myself, and like you, rarely buy a new tool. so yes, it's kind of possible. the thing that makes it hard is space, cost of living, and the attitude of most people. in the publics eye, you are allowed to live an average life, with one sensible car, no noise, a sensible garden and your sensible 1.7 children, and sensible hobbies like football or cycling. anything else and you won't make friends with the neighbours, you'll pay through every orifice available in permits, fuel, taxes and whathaveyou, and a lot of the stuff you want is outlawed or only available to companies (i started one just to be able to buy materials).
      don't forget, the netherlands is the size of 2 new jerseys and there's 17.5 million people here, and we are the second biggest exporters of agricultural goods. something's gotta give.

    • @adamr9215
      @adamr9215 3 года назад +1

      @@rasmAn2 Not very many people live like I do, but it can be done. The land does make me money, it paid for itself in 2 years just with some homemade wind generators and a couple simple hydro-electric generators in streams on the property. I hunt and fish on the property, as well as maintain a garden and 2 greenhouses, plus I raise some livestock. I’m a machinist and engine builder by trade, but have learned to do just about everything I can over the years. Normal houses in my general area are 150-200k for 1200-1500sq ft on a 1/4 to a half an acre. Some on less land.
      That’s how I do it, build it myself, or buy old and restore. 3 phase power can be hard to get at houses in town, so I can pick up big mills and lathes, shapers etc for cheap at auctions or even scrap yards. My biggest lathe came from a scrap yard that didn’t have a machine big enough to grind it up. They sold it to me for half of scrap value to get it out of the way. It didn’t take much to fix it up.
      The nice thing about living like I do is; What neighbors? It is 4 miles from my house to the nearest property line. I can run my dragster on the dyno at 3am and no one knows. Being outside of city limits, there are no permits needed, so there are no costs there. Also, here you can get farm exemptions. My fuels are tax free because of that. People start companies for lots of reasons, including taxes. I incorporated because it makes it easier to buy firearms, among other things.
      Lol, and you can fit about a dozen New Jerseys into Texas. It’s not a small place. It takes all day driving 70mph just to get from one border to the opposite. A lot of the locals are used to having some room, so outside of younger city kids, most people don’t think it’s strange to live like I do. Maybe not common, but not unusual either.

    Apparently the hotel was not good. But did it have hourly rates and evidence the sheets had not been changed? Found one like that in Chicago one night before leaving the US. It was 1am so not a lot of choice.
    The problem with the trailer is the massive overhang behind the truck rear axle. This makes towing a large trailer very unstable with high potential for jack knife at speed. Any cross winds at speed can start the combo oscillating, ending in disaster. The bad ride is also because of the large overhang.

    I've been driving a tractor-trailer 20 years pulling logs where there is only rough roads. I don't put air in my air seat for that reason and most trucks that don't have air ride you might as well just let the air out cuz It will just keep bottoming out until it hurts your back . PS that transmissions is to old to float I believe it's non-synchronized the way I explain it if it's not synchronized you can't float it you can try the 2100 and shift and then it will fall in the next gear at 1500 if it won't go you'll have to double clutch all the time. That trans was most common in the old R - model Mack's. Another words practically indestructible. I'm sorry I had to come back and add this i just think its funny. Tell Dave if he ever visit NC there is a town her its actually where I live but its called New Bern.

      When I got out of driving otr in 2004, every semi truck only had unsynchronized transmissions. I don’t know of any heavy duty trucks that come with synchronized transmissions. Light duty stuff has been synchronized since the 60’s. Synchronized transmissions are the ones that don’t like to float gears. I didn’t think that Eaton made a synchronized transmission for medium duty trucks, but if it won’t float, it’s either synchronized or the shift dogs are worn horribly.
      For air ride, you have to put enough air in it to keep it from bottoming out. And, there are shocks that go on the air ride that have to be maintained and replaced. Most people that don’t like air ride seats have simply never replaced the shock absorber that actually dampens the motion. Without that, you are just sitting on a rubber airbag that will bounce you all around. Twice a year is common for guys that do a lot of driving on lease roads, like you. Get a new and correct shock for your seat, or a rough terrain upgrade shock, and you will like the air ride quite a bit more. Same with cab air ride too, there are shocks and they need to be replaced as needed.

    Eaton Tech here. You do not "float" gears in a 5sp. Those are synchronized transmissions, you'll damage them floating. Need to clutch, and as you mentioned double clutching seems to be the smoothest operation procedure as I've found.
