That kind-hearted 87 years old lady is one hell of an independent woman, and I can imagine her feisty self in her younger days conquering the surrounding mountains 🫡
I am touched by grandnnay's smile, she is happy and enjoy her life. actually she is the same age as my mum, a retired worker live in the city, who was from a small village too, experienced the anti-japansese war, they had to hid in the mountains when Japanese troops passed by their village. luckily she finished school and became a proud worker after PRC established. A lot of changes and stories of this generation.
Your vlogs are like tiny documentaries featuring the local people living their best lives. Thank you for sharing them. It'd be nice to catalog the different mementos from your trips. If not, years from now, you might find it difficult to remember where each one was from.
As a Chinese, I've come to realize that you love the land beneath our feet even more than I do. Please accept my sincere respect. I read the story of Norman Bethune when I was young. At that time, it always felt a bit removed from reality, but you have made the stories of that era seem incredibly real to me.

what's not to love, you have from the ancient to the futuristic, every natural landscape, friendly people, affordable living, infrastructure that takes you to every corner of the country, it's beautiful everywhere. There's this grass is greener on the other side mentality with alot of Chinese, especially the city people.
Granny was inspiring with obvious difficulties physically, yet smiling and cheerful, choosing the more difficult pathways and stairs! A good role model for me.
As a chinese, Katherine, you've been to more places than I have. I know the diverse lifestyles and details of different regions by your video. Looking forward to your next video. I’d like to see what Yunnan looks like through your video.
Comrade grandma is so cool!! She must have a lot of interesting stories to tell. The embroidered bit you got for your wall is awesome too, but I also really liked the “nice to meet you” bag near the beginning. It’s so strangely up my alley I would have snatched it up right then and there 😂
I love seeing rural life to understand how they live and work! Thank you Katherine for sharing this interesting video. looking forward to more videos of this kind.😍
Katherine, I love how you show us these gems in the small villages and towns in China and your interaction with the locals. The grandma at the end was priceless.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video of a little-known side of China full of its own unique charms. Truly appreciate the locals sharing a little bit of their story and culture with us 😊
Hi Katherine, appreciate you showing us the side of China that we often don’t see. Seeing this makes me feel grateful of what I have and how people can be happy with what they. Btw, I love your commentary on things, it’s funny and refreshing.
Your interaction will the local people is priceless . Have you ever had awkward moments when it leaves you speechless? Just a wonderful video.! Sending you much love❤ from Richmond, VA. Jim and Harriet P.S. We just signed up to your Patreon Page at the mid level. All the best.
Thanks for supporting this channel ❤️❤️ and I’ve probably had such a moment at some point but I usually do try to reply in some way or another to keep the conversation going because it’s often the weird awkward encounters that make a good addition to the vlog 😂
Very few people provide this kind of content of China. Thank you so much. BTW, the stories that Grandma must have....She went through the Great Leap Forward, The Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards and ETC. Tough lady - Respect.
Good video. A whiff of fresh, cleansing cool perspective of rural lives. The Yao granny is so energetic and display such patriotism with welcoming friendliness. Very inspiring place and contented folks going about their livelihood. So natural and even the farm animals look happy and free. Away from the hassle of city life.
@williamwilliam I'm not so good in that dialect myself. What I learned I heard from people talking. Sort of like trying to make out what people are saying from what I know and guessing the rest.
In the overview of the village, You can see there are some empty space between house, which is regular trend in Chinese, the vanishing village. Most of young generation left village to town or city. And then some traditional things will lost too after older people gone. Thanks Katherine recording the current status of Chinese Villages.
You've struck gold again. So charming and captivating. I love the singer's outfit. I would wear that here in Tokyo and confuse everyone (what anime is THAT?)
Awww the cute 87 yo grandma climbing up and down the steps of her mountain village, the wayward chicken, and the kids telling you to go back to America 😂 Your videos are always so unique and amazing!
I hope villages like these endure forever, with improvements of course. Simply beautiful. China - you really do take care of your people. Much love from a son in the diaspora.
Thanks for taking us deep into these ancent villages and meeting truly humble people living a simple life. That 87 year-old great grandma is adorable. She sold you a large bottle of chrysanthemum tea for 20 rmb. Amazon sells chrysanthemum tea for $13 for a 5 oz bottle! chrysanthemum tea is also a wonderful herb tea that contains carotenoids, which can help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system. Great video. Keep up the good work.
Didn't realize you were visiting a Hakka village until the granny was saying that it was her "sang ngit". Amazing seeing it as Hakka women are known to be very tough and hard workers.
You have the best videos for China and deserve more views. Please make videos in larger cities or collabs with other youtubers to attract new subscribers.
8:22 This actually comes from a model opera 样板戏 called The Red Lantern 红灯记, which originated in the 1970s. During the ten years of the Cultural Revolution in China, The Red Lantern, as one of the model operas, was among the very few works the Chinese folks could watch at that time. When I saw that uncle 8:00 so engrossed in imitating scenes from The Red Lantern, even in a somewhat comical way, just couldn’t help but feel a bittersweet emotion.
Fantastic look at "traditional" areas in China. I personally saw great changes when I worked in the Silicon Valley and visited contract manufacturers in China, but the new areas always lost some of the old charms (and I don't mean open sewers). I hope rural China retain their traditional feel, as the areas continue to modernize; I mean it must be possible for the government and developers to improve rural lives without losing the heart and soul of towns and villages by becoming micro-Shanghais.
Another amazing video 🥰 I wonder how much is it worth to the grandma when you buy their hardwork. Did you take a picture of the maker of your memory items? It will be more meaningful
I thought you are going to show us your train journey 🙂 壮 and 瑶 are two main minority ethnic groups in Gongdong region. 10:40 lol, I was looking for that to make soup the other day.

Thank you again for sharing another fascinating trip! I actually think the rain adds to the atmosphere to the village! 😁
I’m sorry to hear the go home comment from the school boy in the town. But I believe in the friendship between the peoples. ❤
I believe the kid said there is an American, not American go home. There is an translation error.
Yes, I was shocked by what the kid said. But I hope he meant I'm going home, American. Kids that age wouldn't know much English.
The kid said he is going home. not her
I love seeing rural life to understand how they live and work! Thank you Katherine for sharing this interesting video. looking forward to more videos of this kind.😍

1:19 😂😂 I laughed too hard at your question and Aysajan's response!!

@16:14, so so touching grandma
The old lady seems to talking somewhat in Hakka dialect.
Jin tian sze popo sang nyit.
Today is popo's birthday.
I speak Hakka (very diluted form) and I can sort of understand her...not all, but some of the words.
@williamwilliam I'm not so good in that dialect myself. What I learned I heard from people talking. Sort of like trying to make out what people are saying from what I know and guessing the rest.

Granny is a sweetheart!
The brick buildings really bring back memories . . .
The granny is so cute!♥
Nice scenes captured here! Your new friend from the Uyghurs seems very friendly and "happy-go-lucky." He catches on quickly.

Cheers from Edmonton Alberta Canada. My family is from Toisan in Guangdong
Thank you for sharing.
