    Ping Yao is a UNESCO World Heritage Center which is why I flew there for a weekend visit in 1988. It was once the financial center of China. Because of its location and not a major city, it was not bombed during the wars years , retaining the buildings of centuries ago. Rented a bike to explore the wall city. My hotel was inside the city. Slept on a carpeted kang, had pillows filled with buckwheat and enjoyed northern food. As an ABC, I felt the ancient history I've read about come alive and imagined what life was like centuries ago.

      Shanxi merchants invented the earliest banking system in China around 1856. Its Chinese name is 票号/Piaohao.
      However, in the late Qing Dynasty and the early ROC, the credit crisis spread in Shanxi financial circles.

      I visited Pingyao about 10 years ago, and it reminded me of the place I grew up in Southeast China. In Pingyao I realized that every city the 70s and early 80s was a Pingyao, with many residential houses dating to the Qing Dynasties.

In Shanxi, due to the dry climate, many ancient wooden buildings have been preserved, showcasing the culture of northern ethnic minorities after their Sinicization. Since the northern regimes at that time followed Buddhism, there are also numerous Chinese Buddhist relics.

      @@adamhuang6984 "the culture of northern ethnic minorities" Wrong.
      Shanxi was literally one of the birthplaces of the Chinese civilization. The original Sino-Tibetan language was formed at the eastern borders of Shanxi, at the foothills of the Taihang mountain range (captured in this video as Wutai Mountains), before it spread all across China. Only northern most part of Shanxi, areas bordering Inner Mongolia, has Sinicized ethnic minorities (once nomadic tribes).
      "the culture of northern ethnic minorities" is best used to describe Ningxia. Where you could find traces of the west Xia culture that were exterminated by the Mongols, as well as the culture of the Hui (Chinese Muslims), a mixed people between the Han Chinese, the "color-eye" people (predominantly Tajiks and Uzbeks) brought to China by the Mongolians, and other northern ethnic minorities in the nearby region (Mongols, Tibetans etc.).

    There're many other international tourists sharing their China travel experience on RUclips, some of them show only positive espects, try to attract more followers from China, and some others do the opposite. But what Katherine's doing is very neutral and real. In her videos you can find both good and bad experience, advanced and backward, passionate, hospitable and rude, impolite. Which is perfect, because China is a normal country, like every other countries, not heaven and not hell.

    • @OP-mz3hr
      @OP-mz3hr 3 месяца назад +10

      I agree with your comment for Katherine’s great videos. However, we must also understand why there are positive comments from many foreigners when they travelled China in the last while… simply because the mass anti China smearing campaign and disinformation about how terrible China is has been in western mainstream media for decades and decades.
      It takes so much effort and all these foreigners’ positive videos to counterbalance these tremendous negative bias in the world.
      To be honest, many ppl around the world will never see China in a positive light simply because they have been surrounded by lies about China for years. Once human forms a bias in their mind, that’s likely it. Their mindset will never change. I personally know tons of people like that. It is sad but reality. Humans only believe what they “like” to believe.

    Glad to see your friends enjoyed their first trip to China! The places they visited look like a little slice of Tibet mixed with bits of old Han culture, and your video made me place the region on the list I want to take my wife and visit. Absolutely love the old town clips, they are fast disappearing from the developed provinces or turned into tourist traps.

      Shanxi is closer to Gansu and Ningxia, where many China Hui people live. Hui people are Muslims of China.
      Mahayana Buddhism in Shanxi is different from Hinayana Buddhism in Tibet.
