I always think of wind blast as a built in mechanism to keep your speed in check. A major plus for naked bikes.
Very true!
My thought was wind in the “face” (helmet) was the whole point of riding. It’s like a swimmer whining because they get too wet.
@@Accurize2 Isn’t that the most fantastic moment when you lift that visor and the air comes streaming in? Full credit goes to the open facers. (Although maybe not so popular with UK weather).
@@jimdoar2546 I’m with you. I prefer naked bikes. The older I get I also prefer less technology too, I’d make an allowance for ABS.
Hey TMF, I saw your YT on how much you earn from the channel and I just wanted to say. Thank you. I realise it’s a bit of a labour of love and that anyone who has generated your kind of success in journalism in the media would usually be a rich bastard by now, but alas in the world of social media, it’s the platforms that rake it all in. I just think you have such enthusiasm and are so professional that it’s easy to forget that you are just one guy not an entire production house ( and your content is way better than some channels with huge budgets). I sincerely hope that somehow you actually become a seriously rich bastard because I think you deserve it. Stay upright!
Aussie?
yes!
Wow thank you - and as I noted, I’m not in it for the money (Im very fortunate to have enough already and know that “enough is enough”)
Erm, speaking as someone who spent 8 years in journalism, I can tell you that no-one became a 'rich bastard' from it; that's reserved for the publishers like 'arry' from Harry's Garage.
I'm halfway there....my wife frequently calls me a bastard.
That screen is a very bold move and I applaud it. Looks fantastic.
Well it’s an option - comes with dials as standard….
Thank God@@TheMissendenFlyer
does it have a fuel guage on the TFT?
I saw one of these in the flesh at the motorcycle exhibition last sunday in Copenhagen. Looks really good.
A few years back I stood between the Pure R9T and the Speed Twin. And I went with the R9T. More exciting engine, better handling and better brakes. Triumph has the better looks though.
But the new R12 looks better than the old one. But the old one looked more raw somehow.
Thank you mr Flyer!
I have a '21 R9T Pure which seems really retro in comparison. I'm sure all the after marketers are on top of it as well. At 70 I still consider it as my Hooligan bike that frequently reaches "take off" speeds. What a hoot.!!! Twin clocks are also my choice, but I'm sure the TFT's are admired by younger generation of riders. 👍👍5🏍🙋♂️
Yep long term test
They do customise well
Option for when I want to go smaller from the gs
I really like the style of the R12nineT. Beautiful retro bike, nice design. But yes, that price. In the Netherlands, the entry-level model costs €20,990 and I'm not sure if that includes handlebars and wheels 😂. Between BMW and me it will never be anything again.
Another cracking review! I like this bike a lot, it’s very reminiscent of the old R80s and such, but with all the proper gear and a lot more ‘go’. Excellent work, as ever!
Got a 2018 r9t and it's my fave of all the bikes I've had, not keen on this new one. The styling isn't doing it for me and there's too much visible cabling etc, the price is now ridiculous despite all the new tech they've added.
The styling is confused and inflated, just like their cars are now 😢
Sports bike forks, Monster frame, weird exhaust, Bonny back end, weird colours (green, gold, grey and black wheels?)
Then there's the price.....give me a break. Oh and a Triumph Bonny whilst you're at it.
the screen is looks like a cheap Chinese aftermarket part some teenager installed. engine getting more clogged as the years go by - pass.
Right at the start of the video I thought, "Nice looking bike but it needs proper clocks," and then you mentioned it! Great minds think alike! 😄
I knew that TFT would spark debate!
What a pity. The R Nine T in my garage still makes me smile when I walk in. Definitely gone backwards in terms of looks.
Excellent review as always.
Absolutely love the bike, saw it at the Excel, had to say I prefered the R12 as for price I would quite happily pay it money no object it's lovely
Looks great, like the little TFT, if only a bit cheaper.
Love these. Glad they exist. Spending my own money, I'd buy an immaculately restored airhead. I am well aware that is not normal and that this is better in every measurable way.
I could never buy one because everytime someone asked me what I had, I would spend 20 minutes trying to get the name right, beautiful looking bike though, I loved the colour, I would prefer the dials over the TFT, and I really liked that BMW gave it a proper rear light.
Nice review. For me I would take the Z900RS Cafe. Based on how I would spec one out (Green with Cockpit fairing for BMW) the difference in price is about $5600 (usd) more for the R12nineT. I also had a couple of friends that owned the original Z900 and was given a chance to ride their bikes and loved it. Ever since they brought back the Z900RS I told myself if I had extra money there would be one in the garage. Though I still prefer it in Kawaski green. My problem is I haven't found that extra money.
Always good to have something to lust after!
First Comment! I agree that I would prefer the round clocks. I like the tank, as it looks a bit like the old superbike racers from the '70's.
Well done on being first!
@@TheMissendenFlyer When you’re me you treasure your accomplishments however humble.
Love the bloopers at the end Andy👍
Thanks for watching until the bitter end!
Overheard at BMW press fleet: “make sure Andy gets a green one”
Hilariously overpriced. Its a naked bike that costs more than a big adv bike. Who would buy this over a bonnville even at thr same price let alone £4000 more expensive
Time will tell!
I feel I'm qualified to answer your question as in 2021 I sold my T120 Triumph to buy an R Nine T. A premium is always paid for a vehicle with the propeller logo but in this case I have zero regrets. For me the riding experience is on another level. I'm 69 years old and have had 2 modern Triumph triples in recent years which were all great but the Bonnie was a mobile sleeping pill for me.
@glennthomson350 I guess it's well known the T120 is a more relaxed ride than the r9t. But they're still competitors so should be priced similarly. If the BMW is aimed at more sporty naked bikes it is leagues behind the supernakeds which can also be bought cheaper.
Lovely bike, I just think its too expensive
I understand the economics of it.. being an owner of both the speed twin 1200 and the previous gen r9t, I can tell you for sure that they are extremely different bikes.. the triumph is nice and easy and can be a hooligan if u want it to be, but the r9t for me personally is a total hooligan from the word go!!
For me both of them are keepers!!
So not for you then, but they will sell lots I'm sure.
Looks like the front end was "tacked" on, not a fan.
As per a top review, I personally love the R9T, but this is much better IMO. I don't like the dash/TFT much prefer the twin clocks, but aside from that brilliant, want one!!
Great looking bike, nice classic looks but that price,na.
Great video as always.👍🏻
Hello Andy , Yes please on the longer ride review for the R12 Nine T ... This is the one of the three (your Triunph and Kawwi ) that I would get just for the shaft drive though I wish it and the R1200R still had the telelever front end .I do wish this bike had a true rear fender. If you ever get a chance to try an older R69S with the Earles Fork I think you would be amazed how wonderful a ride that bike has ...
Yes, like it! Lovely-looking machine. It's been a while since I had a naked bike, but perhaps the fairing option is the way to go. Like to see more Mr F reviews please...
More on the way!
Dammit Andy... now I gotta go test ride this beasty. You're the reason I got my 2018 R9T in the first place. You.. monster.
Sorry!
😂@@TheMissendenFlyer
I really think BMW is missing an "entry level" boxer that they could have turned the RNineT into. Something like a rival to the Moto Guzzi V7 - still premium build quality but perhaps lower performance and less tech. Having this bike at £14k alongside the £13k R1250R just feels a bit silly - have the modern liquid cooled version as the properly fast and techy version and have the "retro" bike as a more friendly, comfy chugger. A genuine R90 around 900cc, 70bhp or so and under £10k would've been great.
A beautiful bike in its own right but the old model looked more masculine and purposeful, as befits its feel and sound. My '19 Urban GS will be a keeper if the seat height doesn't become a problem as I age. In the meantime, I'd be very interested in you doing a long-term test.
Scary price for a naked bike while you can buy a low mileage older version half the price,, but at a certain age be the ticket for someone,,,is a nice looking motorcycle ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland great review 👍👍👍
Looks awesome. With all that electronics and the fancy screen, surely now they added a fuel gauge... right? Right?
It's a really nice bike, I can see why it was hard to find fault. I spec'd one up at just under £20k which was a surprise, I would have expected the Shift Cam motor or the new 1300 lump in there to be honest. Cost wise I would opt for the Z900rs and add a few extras having had two in the past ( now have a R1250 rsse). For me the only thing against is the cost but it is a really nice retro, naked bike. I wouldn't say no if one came along at the right price is a few years......great honest review
Nice looking bike. I like the tank, the green and silver works well to my eye.
ATB, Dave
Looks lovely apart from the pointless short front mudguard. Why can’t they and other manufacturers put on a proper mudguard 🤷🏼♂️
Twin dials for me please. Lovely bike. I was pondering this bike, but couldn’t decide between this and the Speed Twin 1200. Maybe I’ll test ride both in the summer…
I’d definitely like to see you ride it for longer. You never know if it’s that good I might just buy one on the back of your review!!! After all I did buy a BMW 310 r on the back of your review… that was 5 yrs ago… lol 😊
Cool!
I was really enjoying the bike until you mentioned the price. Its base price is way too much and then you've got all those possible add ons making it massively expensive. No matter how good the bike is it doesn't justify that price.
This style of bmw are so good looking all I would want to do is have a different colour and black exhaust and like you is want the twin gages thanks for the review ❤
I think I saw front fork extend/dive during gear upshifts under acceleration.
Definitely a looker
Handsome looking machine, love the colours; but for me, it needs a five inch 'Smiths' speedo with various digi readouts about it's face, & a better name - The Green Shadow perhaps? : )
Some people always complain about the price of a BMW - in this case, it’s German built, so you are partly paying western labour costs - having said that, the same folk won’t complain about a Ducati’s price 😂 - if people keep comparing it to a Triumph on price, remember they’re built in Thailand, which is going to bring the price down.
Having owned a couple of r ninet it would have been nice for a comparison with regards to the rear shock as the previous generation was somewhat flawed and with the new rear shock geometry I’d like a comparison, expensive but worth every penny.
As per most comments, sadly expensive. The R12 displayed at launch with the gold tank and spoked wheels really got my interest over this very bland nineT version. In Australia however, you have to go mid spec, before you can get that beautiful gold colour combination. Once you get close to the launch spec, you are at close to AU$30k. At that price point you are in the stunning Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello territory , which I had thought was also overpriced here. The Italians would get my money I think. Thanks as always for the review. Always a pleasure to watch, listen and learn...
Great Bike…. Picked up mine in Spain on 24/2 and very pleased with it. Did you get Connected Ride to work? Neither mine or any other R12 in the dealership would connect to anything which is disappointing on a new release.
Great review as always…..
I’ve never managed to get connected ride to work!
Marlow… Rebellion beer iirc? Lovely on the river etc!
Correct! A proper pint!!
Great machine. Styling is updated to the real retro look which I loved 41 yrs. back with my 83 R100RS which I did monster rides on all across and over North America. I own a 2023 R9T UGS which is a light feeling good handling motorcycle. Engines are much the same but the big difference lies underneath. Updated access to the airbox and the battery in the proper to me place of under the seat. Easy service and access. Exhaust ahs some things done which is subjective but I generally change mine front to rear. Seems to have a good suspension with spring updates for rider weight. All in all a very nice motorcycle. I would go for the quarter fairing or adapt a full RS to it. Would look great and be exceptionally functional. Good vid and review. Glad bikes like this are still made. RTW capable at a fairly good price.
Proof that BMW can make a new bike that is still good looking. Hoorah!
Is it better looking than the outgoing bike though? I miss the old air intake on the side…
quite frankly, I still prefer the look and character of the outgoing model.
Yes would like long term review on this bmw r12 9t
There should be a law preventing British Racing Green from being used on a German bike.
😂
Great video and lovely bike, and yes price might be high but if looking for a keeper then definitely worth a look at. Would like to see what it handles like with a pillion on. Take care and ride safe
Wow what a sharp bike. Thanks for review. Andy just get one😂
Great intro to the bike, deeper review will be interesting. Two points for me, not keen on the rather 'unbalanced' look about the exhaust and wouldn't it look really good if the wheels matched the forks? 😃
Yes the bike looks nice, I don't like the tft..proper dials for me. I know I'm getting old but a twin should have an exhaust each side. The main downside though is the price, as usual with BMW.
I think the previous design was far superior - It was its own thing - it borrowed design queues from the past, but worked them into a modern bike with subtlety. It was a unique looking bike that integrated modern and classic features with perfect balance. It wasn't a "retro" IMO.This clearly is a "retro" which they do not need. They are mimicking something that others are doing when they had their own better version of something unique - why dumb it down?
I tend to agree - I think on balance I prefer the look of the RnineT over this - this one does ride well though....
Dunno why everyone is comparing this to a Bonneville. The best naked retro for me is the Kawasaki Z900RS and there’s no way that I’d buy the BMW over the Kawasaki. The Kawasaki looks better too and at least looks a bit like the 1970’s version. The R60 BMW was like something out of The Great Escape.
I am amused how many people think the r9t is only for town and posing. I have a 2023 r9t scrambler, with a new seat and a couple of kriega bags its a great long tourer. Its fast enough to scare yourself, good in corners, great on slow town work and cruise control and heated grips for a bit of luxury. I found it far more interesting, rattling and quirky than almost every other modern classic save the Moto Guzzi v7....and you can pose on it too!! Don't like the new r12 nine t...they have taken off all the rough edges sadly.
Fair enough!
A lovely looking machine, bit quiet but beautiful. i'd prefer big round clocks am I a dinosaur
Yes please to long term test👍
Seems to be getting nearer to the 1250R. With the options and tech available.
Think I prefer the Speed Twin or Z900RS. The BMW looks "over-engined" for my taste.
BTW Andy, your voice sounded a bit distorted, and the bike sounds were muted. Your older videos had perfect sound. Just thought it was worth mentioning for QA purposes 😉
Noted!
I've really been considering a R9T, so maybe more on how it compares to that ...
I'm thinking of getting one.
I have one and love it, top motorcycle❤
Great review and the looks are spot-on for me. The fit and finish looks excellent from what we can tell on the video. Tempting but it is a chunk of change... Cheers
You already have by far the nicest bike in this sector the Kawasaki (no i dont have one!) but nice review as always.
Thanks!
I always liked the old R9T and this R12 version looks even nicer. I'd definitely have one next to my 1250GS for summer blasts around the local lanes - price & garage space being the only limitations to prevent this......!
Very good looking, apart from the dashboard, but too expensive. A second hand R9T would be my choice if I was in the market for one. Thanks 🙏✌️
I liked the R9T looks better myself. As you say, twin dials are a must. Great review. Q would you replace your Triumph Speed Twin with this? I think the Zed would be my choice.
No I wouldn't replace my ST with this.....
Twin Dials on this one ,for sure TMF. Looks like something is missing to me.
Nice looking bike that, it's a really good iteration on the outgoing model. I have to say that I personally really like that little tft, you're point about "if you want one, then this is a good implementation" (or words to that effect) is spot on I think. I like that it's an option as well, so it's not foisted upon you. I feel like BMW are really the only manufacturer that's nailed the TFT side of things, with maybe KTM second? And Honda being a crushing, distant, last place.
It looks like the rear indicators aren't those horrible (and dangerous) combined units where the break light and indicators are in the same unit, as per the new R1300GS, is that correct?
Correct - and I think Triumph make the worst TFTs of all the manufacturers....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I've not "used" the Triumph ones, but whenever I see them in a video I always think they look like a kids toy.
Actually, I have used one, I took the Tiger Sport 660 for a test ride and I hated the screen, it's so slow as well, which is Honda's party trick too! It feels like BMW actually bother to give their screens the processing power that's actually needed in order to help them run smoothly.
Love the look of that, especially with the green paint work and the gold forks. Nice.
Test rode one. I found it rather underwhelming particularly for the eye watering price
Fair enough! had you riddn the outgoing RnineT?
A good looking bike and I’m with you regarding the clocks, I think twin clocks are much better suited to that bike. Staggeringly expensive compared to its competitors, but it is BMW and a decent bit of kit.
Is a BMW any better than a Triumph? I’m not so sure (being an owner of both!)….
TMF, I purchased a Z900RS because of you. Now this!?! 😀
I just specced one to my satisfaction on the website and it came to £17,023. Madness!
I'd be choosing the new R 1250 R which came to a somewhat more sane £15,345 for the spec I optioned.
Crazy isn't it.....
@@TheMissendenFlyerIt is but if people are daft enough to pay it then good luck to them! It seems as though the BMW marketing team are targeting the same kind of people who sit in Starbucks drinking comically overpriced coffee while tapping away on their £2000 Apple MacBook laptop.
Last week I sat on the version with the brushed aluminium tank and the red frame during the annual Dutch bike show. Beautiful bike, it's like semi naked bike/semi cruiser sitting position with a bit of a reach. Seems very comfy to me as a sportsbike rider. Checked the price when I got home. Ooo my goodness. The version with the Option 719 (brushed alu) + the comfort pack is 24.625 euro in The Netherlands. All bikes and cars are expensive in the Netherlands due to taxation, but that is just crazy. The Ducati Streetfighter V2 or Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello (s version) are cheap in comparison😅.
this digital screen is completely out of the place on this bike...
I agree.....lucky it's optional.
Great video as usual👍👍..I have a 2018 customised Rnine t..can't justify a change to this new one 🤔great bike
Great review and fancied a test ride but you didn't mention that it has no fuel gauge! £16k+ and sooo many extras yet no gauge. I find that very odd and puts me off getting one!
Yes I had a good look but couldn't find one - should have mentioned it!
Such a great motorcycle. I really like the revised styling. Looks cleaner.
I prefer the old simpler one. Especially dial(s) and also the horn shape grey part on the right side distributing the air to the air filter. And what justifies such a jump in price ?
Another great review. I'm a new biker and recently bought a T100, seems like the majority of naked bikes 70mph ish wind buffering, and turbulence is uncomfortable. With that in mind, not ridden the 1200 speed twin or Z900 what are the real-world benefits of a larger-capacity more powerful machine? Keep up the excellent reviews
For me it's acceleration and ease of effortless overtaking.....
Its nice, but I wont be trading my 2021 R9T in on one. I think the sense of urgency you allude to is mainly down to gearing. I believe it has slightly shorter gearing than your GS. So even though it gives away some Hp it isn't much different acceleration wise than the GS and the other versions.
I prefer this to the old R9 T the rear mudguard is better than the plastic rubbish they had on the old one.
I considered getting rid of my Speed Twin for the R9 T but saw this and thought I'd wait. Only thing that is putting me off is they've lowered the seat height on the R12 Nine T, i think with my lanky legs it might now be to cramped 😞
I defo want to try one. Features i like is you can have a quick shifter, cruise and the suspension is fully adjustable oh and no chain, as i like the odd winter ride that would be a massive bonus!
I also like you can get hand guards on the R12 Nine T which don't look that nice but would be an accessory I'd put on in the colder months.
Relly like the look of the bike sounds proper smooth would love one but to pricey for me will hav to stick to my 900 street unless we get a lottery win lol😂
Great video and channel. Does it now have a fuel gauge?
I couldn't find one if it does....
Thank you, although that's a bit disappointing!
Looks good. Reminds me of my old 100/7. Could do with proper mudguard though.
It looks better than the older model, but that price........
Hey Andy, I'm glad my demo went back just as filthy as yours haha! Makes me feel a bit better! Handles like a dream this thing!
Hello young Katherine - good to hear from you! How did you rate it compared to the outgoing bike? What about the price and did you find a fuel guage! (.....I'll go watch your video now for the answers....)
No wonder i leave my bike in Spain for the winter, the amount of crud on it already, and your roads are far cleaner than ours(currently planting 10's of thousand of trees here, mud all over the roads)! £9995 bike in reality,i do like the tank shape,it should deflect the rain past your knees,if hugged tightly...not for me at that price, can't see them shifting many, apart from the renters?
Time will tell!
It looks really good and the basics such as geometry, suspension and engine are excellent. It’s nicely put together but as usual, it suffers from Bung More Wonga - the bike you end up buying is never the basic model. You will have added “packs” to get heated grips meaning you also end up with a heated wash-wipe for the rear, left hand indicator. £4-5,000 later (or 1/3rd more on the basic bike) you get to leave the showroom as the salesman books his holiday to the Seychelles. It’s not the bike I have a problem with, BMW products are superb, it’s just that I’d feel as if I had just been mugged if I purchased one.
Yes there defo is a bit of that in the pricing isn't there Trev.....
Or do what I did, and buy a fully specced demo with low miles 😏
I agree with you on clocks and not a TFT. Why would anyone put a TFT on a retro bike? It’s like buying a Tudor house and sticking a satellite dish on the front! Criminal!! 😀
Agreed! At least it's an option and not forced on you.....
been riding R NineT's since 2015 (three of them, on an option 719 Aluminium presently), i have to admit i'm not too overly impressed with the changes to the new R12 RNineT, i'm already thinking of changing to a Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello
Lovely bike I had an R Nine T Scrambler as my first big bike when I passed my test 6 years ago and loved it, but being 6' 2" found it to small on longer days out, bit to pricey now as well against the competition?
Yes agreed…
Great bikes :) I had the original and I do think this looks nicer more balanced and I do like the TFT upgraded screen and quick shifter is awesome.. nice to have adjustable suspension to.. would be better with the spoked wheels but they were a mission to keep clean.. had a Z900RS and for me the Rnine was much better.. great review as always. Pete
I`m a big fan of this motor as i still have a 2012 TU GS 1200 . Its hard to find anything to critisize here I would add a screen maybe .Its just a very good all rounder which might be damning it with faint praise a bit but they can be hustled down a twisty mountain road as fast as a lot of sports bikes because of their great torque and really nice handling also with an akro fitted they do a very good impression of a Sopwith Camel .Nice review Andy .
When going through the specs at around 11 minutes in, you mention it has keyless ride. However the video clearly shows a slot on the yoke for a key. I'm guessing keyless ride is on the options list. I hope they have sorted out the switchgear which on the 2014 to 2020 BMW's was very unreliable. I had mine replaced under warranty twice on one RT and three times on a second RT. They also changed the lefthand switchgear on my 2019 C-Evolution. For such expensive bikes, this is very poor show indeed. I wager you'll likely never need need to replace such parts on your Kawasaki. Like your review, keep up the good work
Yes I think the BMW switchgear is known to be a bit flimsy....
Blimey, some other dodgy thing they have recalls on but manage to keep quiet about.😂
I don't know if they have recalls on them but they are known to get a bit "sticky" over time....
Seems a great bike to me, indeed! But... EUR 21.000 in NL without any accessory. Kinda eye watering... 😞
OUCH , what a lot of money , lots of credible alternatives , Triumph Bobber , second hand Rocket 3
GT would be far more exciting , and although I really do fancy a R9T , I think its not as pretty as the original , and is probably going to increase the value of the second hand ones , thank you for your marvellous output
I can remember when Suzuki started the trend of the old model engine in a naked frame and gave us a value for money bike; the Bandit.
This bike is nice but it's not value for money. I would certainly take both the Z900RS and Speed Twin over this.
....especially given the price difference!
