  • In the modern political world, the terms ‘left-wing’ and ‘right-wing’ can often be heard and misunderstood. But what do these terms mean and where do they come from? The terms Left and Right were first used in an ideological context during the French Revolution of the 18th century. Those on the left were in support of the revolution and those on the right supported the monarchy. This idea of the left supporting change and the right wanting to keep the status quo continues today and is key in some of their philosophy.

I also noticed that too. The ratio of conservative comments to liberal comments is very high. Is it because liberals don't comment as much as much as conservatives? Are there more conservatives on RUclips then liberals? Is it old or young people making conservative comments? It would be interesting if someone does a study on this. It seems in public that there are more liberals then conservatives. But it's the opposite on RUclips.

I think that terms of right-wing and left-wing should be abandoned, since they are too general and often create misunderstandings. There are at least 3 spectrums of values, that should be taken into consideration:
Culture and Values (Liberal - Conservative)
    Economic (Socialist - Capitalist)
    State Authority (Totalitarian - Libertarian)

I don't think so! Big government isn't called SOCIALism, that's called Authoritarianism. Also: Socialism has already been an idea before the revolution happened. (Actual) Socialists always fought against the government bending over for the corporations or not caring for the people it supposedly serves, and that never changed. (That's why they fought against the monarchy - they were greedy, or at least they were out of touch with the people. So, no, it wasn't the origin of the name like you think.)

I think the best way to sum it up is:

The left values equality, even if they risk losing stability.
Authoritarians value order, even if it means sacrificing privacy, and individuality.
Libertarians value personal freedom, even at the cost of stability, order, etc.
Most people are somewhere on the spectrum rather than on an extreme end of it.
I’m glad he went into the 2-D chart because 1-D spectrums always fail.
They represent libertarianism for example (supporting gay marriage before democrats, opposing corporate welfare, anti war) as being somehow further right than conservatism. The 2-D model just makes more sense.

"The left values equality, even if they risk losing stability."
      As MLK said:
"First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."
To support order and stability at the expense of progress and justice is to be anti-human.

    • @MrMedukneusha
      @MrMedukneusha 5 лет назад +12

No, the "right" isnt about preserving the status quo. I doubt you know what Conservatives are actually conserving. If you think its the status quo, you're wrong.
The left does not value equality. Their history proves it.
Libertarians cannot be far-left...or even slightly left possibly. They think they exist, but they dont.
      Example:
Far-Left libertarian - gays should be allowed to marry whoever they want!
Conservative - No, the U.S. Constitution guarantees the Right of Freedom of Religion and cant be forced to marry gays if they dont want to.
Far-Left libertarian - NO! I'll get the government to force you to marry gays!

This isn’t true at all. There are 5 axes of “left” and “right”. It equates to how equal each individual is with respect to each axis; the right is more unequal.
    Economic:
    Left-Wing is socialist
    Centrist is capitalist
    Right-Wing is Mercantilist
    Societal:
    Left-Wing is preferentialism
    Centrist is Egalitarianism
    Right-Wing is conservatism
    Political:
    Left-Wing is anarchism
    Centrist is devolutionism
    Right-Wing is authoritarianism
    Governance:
    Left-Wing Proportional Localism
    Centrism Representative Presidency
    Right-Wing Absolute Monarchy
    Relations:
    Left-Wing is internationalism
    Centrism is pacifism
    Right-Wing is Irredentist isolationism
To compare two countries, Nazi Germany and Maoist China:
    China is, respectively:
    Left
    Right
    Right
    Centre-right
    Centre-right
    Nazi Germany:
    Right
    Right
    Right
    Right
    Centre-Right
They’re both right wing countries very clearly, but China is slightly more left than Germany, but not significantly overall.

I've seen similar ways of thinking but the most common I've found was that left and right wing weren't political at all and were purely economic stances. For example left wing government controlled economy. Center mixed economy and right market controlled economy. While the other part was an authoritarian libertarian line. Up was authoritarian down was libertarian.

Nice video. I'd like to add something to think about.
    Order and chaos
The left is often associated with chaos, while the right is associated with order. Neither chaos nor order are fundamentally good or wrong. Chaos thrown into a despicable system (order) can be just as good as bringing order into chaos. Chaos is usually a factor which is bombarding a system, which then tries to process it into order. One can manage order, which is the known, the structure, the constant, but chaos is not manageable as it is, which is the unknown, the danger, the change.
What drives the left and the right?
What I think drives people is essentially the nature of humanity.
The leftists think, the human nature is fundamentally corruptible: Power leads to corruption, possession leads to greed, greed leads to corruption, conflict leads to wars, territoriality leads to social divisions, authority leads to obedience. In order to improve anything, our very nature has to change. One step in order to change that is to cut the roots which bind us to our ancestors, to our country, to our nature, to our culture, to religion. Conveniently they also believe that all these things are merely "made up" constructs, which are nothing else than illusions and backwards habits. Take care of others, if you are helpful, others will be helpful too.
Rightists think you have to accept nature as it is and not try to change it. They do not believe that it can be changed at all - only the given surrounding, wealth, technology, history may impact us, but the core will never change. Also, the belief that one is just "born into being something" has quite some legitimacy to them, because we do not only share genes from our parents and ancestors, we also share their very being to some extend. Life is harsh, living is suffering, but that is an eternal truth to them. Trying to lower the suffering is the goal to achieve, eventually leading to happiness. For improvement, the solutions are freedom, liberty, the seek for strength and enlightenment - respecting or finding one's roots. Speak truthful, be strong - there will be always weak ones, the failed, and the only one who can help them are themselves. They do not believe in helping so to say. They believe in the people's pursuit to their strength to become as good as they can possibly become, so that everyone is as good as he/she can be, so that all are a productive member of a country.
I have to admit that both fundamental directions have convincing elements. I have trouble calling myself left or right winged, but neither am I a real centrist. I think that all forms of social systems and ideologies have the capability to work out, while there is a strong tendency to always return to centrist politics. But there is one thing I absolutely believe in: Absolute free speech, truth and understanding. The world is so damn complicated, but people still find their ways to become fanatical with some ideology without even knowing what it entails or what they even really oppose.

Centerist ideology is pretty much the sane choice nowadays
you can't take centerism to the extreme because there IS no extreme, too much regulation=stagnation and poverty
too much freedom=as seen with liberals, often leads to violence or crime
the correct ideology is MODERATION... like everything in life, taking anything to the extreme will do damage
while keeping things in moderation will make sure everything survives

    • @brianviktor8212
      @brianviktor8212 6 лет назад

@Magnesium - The right wingers think that change comes slowly and steadily, in the frame of generations and not by some populist temporary politics. They don't believe in politics altering the way of life, but rather believe in people having the capability to become better persons and advancing technology.
About the left - I think you are right about it being more complex. It's either "society is changeable/can be formed to become better" or "human nature is evil therefore we have to suppress it." BUT: If you believe you have to apply a constant dictatorship against human nature, even if it is to the benefit of the society, you would still actively suppress and act out violence and coercion against people. That would envelop quite some malevolence, while believing in a changeable nature/society sees that malevolence only as a temporary necessity, not a permanent state of requirement.
Which means, if you do not truly believe society and human nature can be shaped, it would be nihilistic and cynical to do the same as those who do, which would be basically just constant tyranny. Something like that could never work long enough, so those people on the left encompass more right wing beliefs as they know of. That's the case anyways, as currently the left wing is undermined by some hazardous neo-Marxist ideology, which is contradictory on many ends. Whatever they would have believed in without it, it is mostly overwritten through indoctrination and propaganda (However, that also counts for right wingers, especially those who are more oppositional to the left due to its current corruption).
Besides, reconsidering some things I "believe" will not lead to any enlightenment on my side. You'll have to elaborate. Anyway, I am quite willing to question what I believe in, if I am convinced otherwise. Which happens quite a lot.
@R. Gletscher - People are not entirely right wing nor entirely left wing, it's a gradual position on a scale. So mathematically one could be 70% right wing, 30% left wing, being right wing under the line. But there is of course more to it than just being "right" and "left."
One of my theories is that the political spectrum consists of a triangle with the 3 points being: Socialism, Liberalism, Tribalism. But even there I have my doubts because nationalism has quite socialistic elements too, just directed towards other people. So even if Marxism and National Socialism have their differences, they also have a lot in common. Maybe it's something like Socialism/Totalitarianism with a "slot" to be filled with some sort of doctrine like race politics (superior races, inferior races), class politics (bourgeois vs proletariat), identity politics (skin color, gender, heritage - the more you differ from being a "white Christian male" the more oppressed you are considered - basically reversed race politics).
Maybe the only core difference is therefore just Liberty State Power, meaning Individualism vs Collectivism, while the rest is just "details," but all is obscured by political spectrums.
@swag god 42 - I don't think that I mentioned that directly... but yes that's true. The "roots" I referred to also include religion and religious beliefs, as they are also tied together with culture and tradition. Atheism is a movement to distance yourself from these particular roots, so a natural consequence is also to distance yourself from right wing core beliefs to some degree, causing most atheists to be on the left spectrum.
@TheSharpmarksman - Centrism and being moderate - the seek for balance - is truly a positive thing. As of many things, the truth is most often found between the extremes. However, there is a big issue with it. In case of corruption, which will also infest centrist states, it is very hard to be erased and becomes very long lasting. Assuming corruption is any force of power which leads the generic population to have worse conditions than necessary. Example: Higher taxes to finance certain corporations or banks. But who knows, maybe a balanced state would be capable to fight off its corruption reasonably and to tackle its issues, so that the rate of getting "bad things" is equal to the rate of removing them - which would be just ideal.

Wow. This is actually pretty accurate. I'd be interested in hearing how libertarianism is explained.

This video: lets take two pieces of data incredibly close on the political spectrum and completely categorize the rest of the spectrum by extrapolating the tendencies of those points to the extreme instead of actually looking at tendencies of radical elements or considering their values.

I think its something like if a 3rd party gets 5% of the national vote, they recieve an increase in funding, allowing them to campaign more efficently.

the left wing supports things that destroy the places they live and the right doesn't
the right wing doesn't scratch their heads after they intact their policies and wonder why everything went to shit. that is constantly happening on the left. the right doesn't do that. the right actually wants to live under their own policies.
