@@zorquax I also noticed that too. The ratio of conservative comments to liberal comments is very high. Is it because liberals don't comment as much as much as conservatives? Are there more conservatives on RUclips then liberals? Is it old or young people making conservative comments? It would be interesting if someone does a study on this. It seems in public that there are more liberals then conservatives. But it's the opposite on RUclips.
I think that terms of right-wing and left-wing should be abandoned, since they are too general and often create misunderstandings. There are at least 3 spectrums of values, that should be taken into consideration: Culture and Values (Liberal - Conservative) Economic (Socialist - Capitalist) State Authority (Totalitarian - Libertarian)
But this makes no sense because in the UK the term “Liberal” relates to a sub-ideology of British Conservatism. British Liberalism = Conservatism in many ways; so Liberal-Conservative would mean exactly the same thing in relation to values..
@@brumav9779 The relationship of liberalism and conservatism is similar in America. The left in America tries to claim their side preserves liberty. They don't and their history proves they don't. @Emanuel Teklu I don't think so! Big government isn't called SOCIALism, that's called Authoritarianism. Also: Socialism has already been an idea before the revolution happened. (Actual) Socialists always fought against the government bending over for the corporations or not caring for the people it supposedly serves, and that never changed. (That's why they fought against the monarchy - they were greedy, or at least they were out of touch with the people. So, no, it wasn't the origin of the name like you think.)
@Igor Horváth And that's what needs to change. If politicians have no incentive to buy votes or hoard wealth, then they'll become more honest with their work (or perhaps even disappear entirely as society grows to realise they don't need politicians; only each other).
The political compass is the way to go. Up and down is what he’s on about. Left and right are about socialism and capitalism. He’s got it wrong. And anarchism is actually a good ideology. Read up on it. Great read.
This is the worst take on what constitutes left/right wing politics in my 27 years on this planet. Full of contradictions, myths and memes. Please, delete and do better.
I think the best way to sum it up is: The right values stability, even if those at the bottom have to pay the price. They generally favor the status quo. The left values equality, even if they risk losing stability. Authoritarians value order, even if it means sacrificing privacy, and individuality. Libertarians value personal freedom, even at the cost of stability, order, etc. Most people are somewhere on the spectrum rather than on an extreme end of it. I’m glad he went into the 2-D chart because 1-D spectrums always fail. They represent libertarianism for example (supporting gay marriage before democrats, opposing corporate welfare, anti war) as being somehow further right than conservatism. The 2-D model just makes more sense.
"The left values equality, even if they risk losing stability." As MLK said: "First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection." To support order and stability at the expense of progress and justice is to be anti-human.
No, the "right" isnt about preserving the status quo. I doubt you know what Conservatives are actually conserving. If you think its the status quo, you're wrong. The left does not value equality. Their history proves it. Libertarians cannot be far-left...or even slightly left possibly. They think they exist, but they dont. Example: Far-Left libertarian - gays should be allowed to marry whoever they want! Conservative - No, the U.S. Constitution guarantees the Right of Freedom of Religion and cant be forced to marry gays if they dont want to. Far-Left libertarian - NO! I'll get the government to force you to marry gays! The 2-D political spectrum has too many flaws to be considered accurate. The 1-D spectrum doesnt allow political malleability. Which the left uses constantly to shift their history to their opponents.
Yeah cause the liberals are at a disadvantage....they need to be respectful toward religions and are too polite to just say no to the more radical ones. Conservatives, meanwhile, will put their foot down because Islamic culture doesn't mesh with the dominant Christian culture. So basically conservatives will make Islam out to be totally evil and different from Christianity (which tbh they're really not that different) because Islam goes just a *bit* too far to the right even for their comfort.

There are plenty of wackjob conspiracy theorists. I'm seeing alot of "im on the left because they support equal rights" which the left historically and currently do not.
This seems to be different in different countries, though. Here in Germany, the right wing is rather authoritarian and the left wing wants a slim government. Since, as you said, right does rather mean conservative, a lot depends on the history of an individual country. The USA was always known for individual freedome, while Germany always had a strong government that was very authoritarian in the past.

Thank you for these videos. I was just trying to explain my understanding of what left is and what right is. It's often frustrating trying to help people expand their horizons through discussion when they have been exposed to dumbed down propaganda and think it's the absolute truth. The propaganda war here in the U.S. is being waged pretty heavily at the moment.
The explanation of this video was pretty bad, so i dont think people would get a better grasp if you use the the terms and definitions used in this video...
"Not just two dimensional" That spectrum was one dimensional, then became two-dimensional. Rather than two-dimensional, to three-dimensional, as eluded to.
You are mixing the economic spectrum (left - right) with the social/personal spectrum (libertarian - authoritarian). left = economic democracy right = economic freedom libertarian = personal freedom left-libertarian = personal freedom + economic democracy right-libertarian = personal freedom + economic freedom
"right = economic freedom" TIL setting up an economic system that funnels all wealth and power into the hands of a select few unelected individuals is freedom. I swear, liberals have an insanely warped view of freedom.
The best thing that was said through this video was basically look at how they behave and look at the party's policies before you just go based on what they call themselves
Not here to attack anyone but conservative values really confuse me. It's said that they want less government control and intervention with things, and yet they call for higher regulation and control when it comes to people's rights like same-sex marriage and abortion? Or is that only referring to the government's economic control?
Yes, the conservatives often hold religious moral values which make them oppose or be skeptical of such social issues. They look for less economic regulation because they are supporters of capitalism and seek the development of the economy via a free market.
My views: Government involvement in peoples lives should be limited unless absolutely needed. I support gay marriage and think anyone should be do what they want, unless it's against the law. Indifferent about the death penalty and against abortion.
This isn’t true at all. There are 5 axes of “left” and “right”. It equates to how equal each individual is with respect to each axis; the right is more unequal. Economic: Left-Wing is socialist Centrist is capitalist Right-Wing is Mercantilist Societal: Left-Wing is preferentialism Centrist is Egalitarianism Right-Wing is conservatism Political: Left-Wing is anarchism Centrist is devolutionism Right-Wing is authoritarianism Governance: Left-Wing Proportional Localism Centrism Representative Presidency Right-Wing Absolute Monarchy Relations: Left-Wing is internationalism Centrism is pacifism Right-Wing is Irredentist isolationism To compare two countries, Nazi Germany and Maoist China: China is, respectively: Left Right Right Centre-right Centre-right Nazi Germany: Right Right Right Right Centre-Right They’re both right wing countries very clearly, but China is slightly more left than Germany, but not significantly overall.
Do you have a source for these axes or did you come up with them yourself? I've seen similar ways of thinking but the most common I've found was that left and right wing weren't political at all and were purely economic stances. For example left wing government controlled economy. Center mixed economy and right market controlled economy. While the other part was an authoritarian libertarian line. Up was authoritarian down was libertarian.
Imagine unironically doing the progressive dismissal meme of "socialism is when the government does stuff", yet cant explain what socialism is without the government doing stuff.
I mean, that meme didn't just pop put of thin air. The reason we joke about this is because people have been "unironically doing the meme" since the cold war.
The best way to define left and right wing is Left wing: anti-capitalist Right wing: capitalist Liberal capitalists who were pro revolution still remained on the right side during the French Revolution. Centrists are Keynesian not leftists, leftists are completely anti-capitalist and it’s been like this since the French revolution
Yeah the past few years have flipped the left/right thing on it's head. If I told you in 2002 that I was pro big pharma, pro monster international corporation (FB, Google etc), pro race and sex based decision making, pro censorship, pro mandated medical procedure, and pro war, you'd 100% for sure assume I was right wing.

this is why the compass and spectrum are both screwed up----------------- going back to an earlier part of the video he defined the left as the group wanting change-------- the description is too vague to proceed any further or define a group ------------ that could define almost any group in America----------- the left were classical liberals and there was no reason to change that definition and no need for another axis on the spectrum-------- we should go back to describing the left as classical liberals or libertarians , redefine the center as social liberals or moderates and Mao and Hitler as far right authoritarians
Actually it’s not just right and left, but Americans seem to think that because they have only 2 parties and no freedom to vote for other parties and actually have an effect
I think its something like if a 3rd party gets 5% of the national vote, they recieve an increase in funding, allowing them to campaign more efficently.

@@bycreay3647 his entire analysis is reductive and stupid. @salahshinigamiamv9814 Not sure if you'll see this, but the left right spectrum in the political compass test is economics, not social policy, and that might be why you got authoritarian.
A lot of mistakes are made in this video, but I don't think that's inherently their fault. The political spectrum is really a terrible system to consider things. It's useful in vague conversation, but when you look into it, it's very difficult to fully define "right" and "left," as both ideologies have a wide range of different political camps, for example as many have pointed out, anarchists are considered far left, but here leftism is defined as wanting more government control. However, it's not unrealistic to say that a thing that the left and the right often disagree on is government control, and in mainstream politics, it's usually the left advocating more control and the right advocating less. Different countries, cultures, and times mean there will never be a true definition of 'left' and 'right', so it's very difficult to pinpoint and explain, and I think the uploaders done a decent job of getting the gist of it for someone who's not as invested in politics as much of the comment section are.

@@MyTrickyTricks Alright, but let's keep this nice and friendly. :) 1. Guns are good 2. Small government is better 3. Abortion is bad. Agree or disagree, let me know and lets start this, can't wait to hear from you! :)
@@MyChannel-eo8ic 1. Disagree I believe that if you reduce the amounts of guns in society you will get less homicides related to guns, and if there should be a way to have a gun. It must be locked down in the back of your car/house. Many people can get mad in situations and things can escalate quickly, if you need to go and use a key to open a cabinet where your gun is located then I think many people would reconsider their choice of actually trying to kill people and it would slow down the flow of escalation. Automated firearms should be restricted to people who got a special license or banned altogether, I see no reason as to why people need a gun made to kill humans. Many people argue that firearms is good so you can protect themselves/others. Well that might be true if it was a mass shooting, but the problem is that it also starts mas shootings and single kill incidents. Guns kill people so fast you might not be able to react before the damage is done. I do agree though it CAN be lifesaving but that in the end of the day more people die because of it being legalized than being saved of it. 2. Small government as in no healthcare and education by state? Then disagree This depends on the country. If i was in government of a micro state I would probably support making it a tax haven so money would flow through the country, and attract rich people from all over the world. Monaco, Malta for example. If the country has good natural resources I would like the country to manage how to extract this resource and do it in a way that would benefit the country the most. As Norway has done with Oil for example, taxing oil companies heavily, making a government owned oil company and regulating it a lot, then put money in a fund for future generations/financial crisis. If Norway had a true capitalist government then that Money would go straight into the pockets of the owners and out of the country. Instead of improving infrastructure, income and living standards across the country, which in turn makes the country efficient as in terms of creating value. And with a middle class with more purchasing power could then turn into more profit for the companies providing services and goods, its like a wheel you just gotta get the wheel to be as round as possible so you get the most flow on the road. Therefore some things need regulation. Why Healthcare and education? Because I believe in equal opportunities, if you're smart you should be awarded for that and not because your parents economy is stronger than others. And if i get sick I can go to the doctor and get help for free which is really nice. Instead of potentially having to quit the job and being a parasite to the society by not doing anything, and going into a bad loop where I can't do my job and I can't get money for treatment. And many studies have shown that the US who got privatized hospitals is way more expensive to run than other western countries without necessary being any better. And whilst we are into this I think that we shouldn't privatize things like Prisons and healthcare. It's incentive's is to make people more sick or have more people in jail so they can earn money, it grows corruption. Privatized healthcare is okay if you got the option of public healthcare as well. 3. Abortion Depends In my opinion Abortion should be up to the medical experts. But if I do have to say something it would be that I think there should be possible to do abortion if its done early on in pregnancy, how early I don't know. Before the brain is developed into something that can think/feel. After that time there should be a good reason as to why the abortion needs to be performed. I do not think religion should play any role in politics at all by the way.
With the failures of the authoritarian left in Europe in the 1980s/1990s and the rise of the far right in recent years, there are a lot more libertarian leftists and authoritarian right-wingers nowadays than you acknowledge. Most of the far leftists I know are anarchists, syndicalists, libertarian socialists, etc. The statist authoritarian leftists (Leninists, Stalinists, Maoists, etc.) are a small minority that is no longer taken seriously by most of the far left (which is mostly libertarian now). Not to mention, the rise of Trumpism and other right wing populist movements shows that the authoritarian right is currently overshadowing the libertarian right.
"Not gunna lie, they had us in the first half" The introduction of saying left tends towards more gov't and right tends towards less was bad because it only continues to perpetuate mainstream ideology. This was somewhat redeemed later in the video with a better representation, but I was still hoping to see the political compass (more than the basic one given).
Thats by design. The other "political compasses" allow for the left to shift their history to their political opponents. Funnily enough this applies to the left across the western world. Yes, i'm gonna do it, I'm gonna invoke the H-man because it applies specifically here. Hitler was a far-left progressive. Why? Easy, socialism is far-left. Oh but wait, you've been told hitler was a fascist, no he wasn't. Sure all socialism is inherently fascistic, BECAUSE fascism is based on socialism, which is how a bunch of italian socialists influenced by marx founded fascism. ...uhh, i'll give you time to fix that nosebleed you're likely having. Facts tend to do that sometimes
Deathstar777 well it wasn’t a good video due to it brain washing into thinking left wants more government do research your self Anarchy is literally a left wing ideology
The left doesn’t necessarily want a bigger government as Corbyn wanted to replace government with a more open democratic system where the people had more of a say ie instead of politicians voting on our behalf the public would vote on the issues themselves which would make politicians just public servants who uphold the will of the people instead of being in control of the people. In effect the people would choose if they wanted austerity or not and would choose on taxes or welfare and what public money was and wasn’t spent on. I quite like the idea of having a more open democratic system as I quite often don’t trust politicians to make decisions for us as they seem to make decisions solely for themselves rather than for the benefit of the people.
Its rather simple, if you want freedom, you're on the right. If you want your taxes spent on eugenics and buying votes for demorats, you're on the left.
These muddies the waters. I would just say Less poverty and much better conditions for everyone, AROUND the world The world is getting a better place with science and economic developement We just have to work on the climate problem
Not many left wing libertarians or right wind authoritarians around, or people inbetween, or if there are the media ignore them. Seems like the consensus is you are either left wing or right wing - Period. No wonder there is so much division in the UK and USA
@Bruno Pereira Most anti-fascists I've seen are anarchists. Though, obviously, Marxists and more "authoritarian" leftists are also opposed to fascists, because fascism is anti-worker, and must be destroyed for the benefit of the working class. But anarchists would be especially opposed to fascists, as fascism is in complete opposition to the anarchist concept of freedom for the working people. Where as Marxists seek to use the state to advance the working class cause, and their support for the working class aligns them with anarchists, fascists seek to use the state to crush the working people's aspirations for liberty, which goes against both Marxists and Anarchists. The working class are the people, those who stand against the working class stand against the human race.

I think that terms of right-wing and left-wing should be abandoned, since they are too general and often create misunderstandings. There are at least 3 spectrums of values, that should be taken into consideration:
Culture and Values (Liberal - Conservative)
Economic (Socialist - Capitalist)
State Authority (Totalitarian - Libertarian)
You might want to look into what...nvm your name looks foreign. I was speaking only of the American system.
But this makes no sense because in the UK the term “Liberal” relates to a sub-ideology of British Conservatism. British Liberalism = Conservatism in many ways; so Liberal-Conservative would mean exactly the same thing in relation to values..
A better word would be Socialist, or democratic Socialist. In America the Democratic Party have the exact same values as the UK Conservative Party.
@@brumav9779 The relationship of liberalism and conservatism is similar in America. The left in America tries to claim their side preserves liberty. They don't and their history proves they don't.
Ask an American libtard what "conservatives" are conserving, they'll parrot the same three points they've been told to say. The three topics are hierarchy, status quo, keeping the rich, rich and the poor, poor.
Spoiler Alert: Conservatives are CONSERVING the freedoms and limitations on government stipulated in the U.S. Constitution.

I don't think so! Big government isn't called SOCIALism, that's called Authoritarianism. Also: Socialism has already been an idea before the revolution happened. The right want individual freedom but also want to ban gay marriage and abortion
I think the best way to sum it up is:
The right values stability, even if those at the bottom have to pay the price.
And that's exactly why left is trash and right is better.
@@achyuththouta6957 ffs its people like you who pisses everybody off.
"The left values equality, even if they risk losing stability."
As MLK said:
"First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."
To support order and stability at the expense of progress and justice is to be anti-human.
Example:
Far-Left libertarian - gays should be allowed to marry whoever they want!
MrMedukneusha what are you talking about I’m a libertarian and I think the church should be able to turn down any marriage they want for any reason.

LEFT WING - MORAL FREEDOM/ECONOMIC AUTHORITY.
Geneva Mode they were socially right wing.
Muslim countries are *hella* right-wing
Yeah cause the liberals are at a disadvantage....they need to be respectful toward religions and are too polite to just say no to the more radical ones. Conservatives, meanwhile, will put their foot down because Islamic culture doesn't mesh with the dominant Christian culture. So basically conservatives will make Islam out to be totally evil and different from Christianity (which tbh they're really not that different) because Islam goes just a *bit* too far to the right even for their comfort.
Ask a Christian that today, no--that's going way too far. Ask a Christian 100 years ago and they would tell you that's not that bad.

this is a great and concise video without any bias. it’s a rare occurrence, but definitely a good one✌🏼
Lol, yeah. No it's not.
@@MrMedukneusha It doesn't appear to force any sort of belief on you, and presents the history pretty accurately, so... huh?
@@loki3523 The video is wrong from the outset. Supporters of a monarchic system are called feudalist. And he further proves he doesnt know what hes talking about when he says conservatives preserve the status quo. That happens less than one min in.
@@MrMedukneusha How do conservatives not believe in preserving the status quo? And also, he never debates that supporters of a monarchist system are called feudalists. He's just saying people against the French revolution were classified as right-wingers, as they opposed change, which set up the idea for the "left vs. right" idea in the US.
loki352 and this video misrepresented the left wing as being total government when Anarchy is literally left winged
this... is so inaccurate tho lol wtf
What was inaccurate?
@@bycreay3647 idk maybe the fact that he said the "left want more government control" or the fact that he views politics an incredibly diverse subject and tried to map on single god dang line (yes the political compass is also bad too).
@@bycreay3647 the most glaringly obvious inaccurate part was “hitler was right wing socially but left wing economically.” Like what the fuck?? The man who persecuted trade unionists and is the king of privatisation is economically left wing? There’s no way the guy who made this video is that fucking stupid
@@bycreay3647 his entire analysis is reductive and stupid. It is best to think of political ideology as a multidimensional thing with the simple 2 dimensional political compass being a decent implementation even if it’s not perfect. This allows for an economic axis and an “authority” axis-thus you have left (communism) and right (capitalism) and then authoritarian or anarchic. There is waaaaayyy more to it but this is a far better take of what it means to be left or right than this smooth-brain shit.

The only country that really matters is America. So long as the rest of the world does as God Emperor Trump says, they can sit down and stfu.

Libertarian Socialist and Authoritarian Capitalist ideologies both exist. So you have clearly missed something fundamental in your explanation.
Libertarian socialism is other words is anarchy and authoritarian capitalism is actually fascism
Thanks for this, I have been confused about left/right political policy for a long time. This video has made it very clear and straightforward to understand.
Wow, I really thought that this was going to be biased, but you actually managed to present and accurately describe the political spectrum without shoving in your own views. Well done.
All the video is is regurgitation of their own views. Even right wingers feel misrepresented.
having an accent doesnt make you intelligent after all
That's UK soft power for you.
This video: lets take two pieces of data incredibly close on the political spectrum and completely categorize the rest of the spectrum by extrapolating the tendencies of those points to the extreme instead of actually looking at tendencies of radical elements or considering their values.
Everyone does this. They completely ignore the complex ideological differences and just go to the big government versus small government thing.
You learn more about a Side from looking at its Extremes than from looking at its most moderate Qualities.
I 'm baffled how the US only has two parties.
Here in Europe we have like 8 different parties that range from the communists to the extreme rights

There are so many incorrect things here. Wow.
1) Right wing parties in social democracy like the Tories are upholding (but not expanding) the social democracy... making them left-of-centre
2) Left wing in not usually authoritarian and right wing is not usually libertarian. The tenants of liberalism have always been libertarian based. The left has become more authoritarian in recent years with SJW influences, and non-libertarian conservatives were almost always more authoritarian on civil liberties.
3) Fascism is a right-authoritarian ideology in almost all contexts. Mussolini and other dictators are very right.
Well I happen to think that Mussolini and other dictators are very wrong :)
Economically Mussolini and Hitler aren't right, left, or center, they're third position.

@@MyChannel-eo8ic I am also European left wing so if you interested hit me up.
@@MyTrickyTricks With a friendly debate?
@@MyTrickyTricks Alright, but let's keep this nice and friendly. :)
1. Guns are good
2. Small government is better
3. Abortion is bad.
Agree or disagree, let me know and lets start this, can't wait to hear from you! :)
@@MyChannel-eo8ic 1. Disagree
I believe that if you reduce the amounts of guns in society you will get less homicides related to guns, and if there should be a way to have a gun.
Then disagree
This depends on the country.
3. Abortion Depends
In my opinion Abortion should be up to the medical experts. But if I do have to say something it would be that I think there should be possible to do abortion if its done early on in pregnancy, how early I don't know. Before the brain is developed into something that can think/feel. After that time there should be a good reason as to why the abortion needs to be performed. I do not think religion should play any role in politics at all by the way.
when your video about explaining politics makes it seem like anarchists are right wing you know you fucked it up
With the failures of the authoritarian left in Europe in the 1980s/1990s and the rise of the far right in recent years, there are a lot more libertarian leftists and authoritarian right-wingers nowadays than you acknowledge. Most of the far leftists I know are anarchists, syndicalists, libertarian socialists, etc. The statist authoritarian leftists (Leninists, Stalinists, Maoists, etc.) are a small minority that is no longer taken seriously by most of the far left (which is mostly libertarian now). Not to mention, the rise of Trumpism and other right wing populist movements shows that the authoritarian right is currently overshadowing the libertarian right.
let's cut off the old wings of the bird and grow new ones, ones that won't divide our nation. everyone will be an independent.
"Not gunna lie, they had us in the first half"
The introduction of saying left tends towards more gov't and right tends towards less was bad because it only continues to perpetuate mainstream ideology.

@@loser7128 finally someone normal in the comment section...thanks for making me realise that i am not alone
I quite like the idea of having a more open democratic system as I quite often don’t trust politicians to make decisions for us as they seem to make decisions solely for themselves rather than for the benefit of the people.

jacc88888 Most left wingers are libertarian... authoritarian leftists are few and far between.
Bruno Pereira what about them
@Bruno Pereira Most anti-fascists I've seen are anarchists.
