- The 350 year old oak tree has been safely dismantled. We do it justice by milling the timber into slabs and various size beams. Time lapse and explanation of the works.

I’ve never seen an oak tree that’d give good long wide boards like you see in 17th century flooring. I live near some oaks dating back to the 16th century but they’re all twisted and the sumps are short. Probably why they’re still standing. There must’ve been some tremendous oaks.
Good point @scribe. Wonder if the specimen slabbing oaks were felled out to go for ship building? There was a tale told that in the Elizabethan times, every farmer in the country had to grow a specified number of oaks for the national supply. Is it true that the French oak is superior to the English oak?
@@dportercontracting9974 as an antique furniture restorer I would say that if you want that ‘Ooooh! That’s a lovely piece of oak!’, then I’d go English.

I’m looking to get myself an Alaskan mill + chainsaw. Do you recommend any brands? I hear the 660 chainsaw is a good ‘un for milling
The 660 is an excellent saw to get started with on the bigger stuff.
This job would have been better and swifter with an 880. I'll have to look down the back of the sofa for some loose change for one..
This particular mill was off eBay. It's aluminium and was around 100 squid. They have drastically come down in price over the last few years.
