  • In this video I install code 5 lead to a gutter. The builder didnt want to build steps but still wanted to use lead. So T-pren expansion joint was used to overcome this problem.

    Why every 1 meter can you not go every 1.5 meter an expansion joint at code 5

    • @clivefox5072
      @clivefox5072 2 года назад +3

      You can use code 5 up to bays 600mm wide at 1.5m by this looks wider than 600mm, so to prevent any movement and splitting you would need to shorten length, 1m bays is correct and Stuart is doing a great job. Only issue I can see is how area under lead is vented, like with all lead roof, area must be vented in cold or warm roof construction.
      Top job again stuart

    • @slbleadworks
      @slbleadworks  2 года назад +2

      As Clive as mentioned as these bays are wider than 600 mm the bay size has to be shortened. The maximum size you can go in code 5 is 1.2 square meters. These bays worked out well within at 1m lengths and it also meant I was able to get all the bays a similar size.

    Im shocked at how wide that valley is, the cost of lead must be frightning, welding looks outstanding, I hope someone fitted a velux for maintenance, I didnt see one, had an outlet like that on an inverted roof valley block with twigs and leaves in an empty house wrecking rooms with rot from the leak.

    • @slbleadworks
      @slbleadworks  Год назад +1

      This is the widest gutter I’ve ever seen or done. I wanted the builder to use steps. But he built it like this before I arrived. There was so much welding. 3m on every join. The gutter falls both ways. So half discharges straight of the roof. But still it’s a shame there’s no velux for maintenance. I did suggest it.

    Excellent job!
    I'm a plumber who does a fair bit of leadwork, but never used the t-pren before. Funnily enough, i've got a gutter to do now that has to have these expansion joints. And hence, finding as much info as i can, and finding this channel!
    If i may, i'd like to ask a couple of questions. One, can the t-pren be welded onto the lead before bent and dressed into place, as i'm a little concerned as to the rubber joints being damaged by any excessive pulling when being dressed in?
    Also, looking about, is there a strip/cover that goes over the neoprene? I'm seeing there is online, but there wasn't anything supplied other than the lead/expansion roll.
    Once again though, job looks a belter.

      Would you consider subscribing please if you haven’t done so already 🙏.
      Yes you can weld the expansion joint on before hand. It makes things so much easier if you can do all the welding on the flat.
      As with the cover strips. I think you can buy it with the expansion joint. Although I’ve never come across this.
      I just make my own. Just cut some lead in the desired width. And weld some clips on the bays to hold the strip in place. Just make sure you leave a good expansion on the clips when you bend them up. 6mm.

      @@slbleadworks Thanks for the quick reply. All noted, thankyou!
      Yes, i was thinking of the ease of burning on the flat, especially since space is an issue!
      Yeah, i think this 'strip' just adheres on, from what i've seen. But good idea with the lead and clips, although if not a walkway and kind of hidden away, dosen't overly matter.
      I've also noticed, and read, that only the top lap on the expansion joint needs to be welded (if i can i usually do the back as well as to most burns, but i think i go overboard, lol)
      Picking up some ideas too, i've not thought about heating the lead up for bossing!! Something i'll certainly try.
      THanks again Stuart, very much appreciated.
