In this video you join me on my holiday in Southern France. This holiday has come at the right time as my back has taken a step backwards recently. So the nice weather and relaxation has really helped. Whilst I’m here at my mother in laws she has asked if I wouldn’t mind cleaning out the gutters. So here we are. I know this is different from my usual content. But I wanted to check in. I hope yo...

There's hopefully only another couple of days of tiling left now. And to clad the dormer in lead. I'm really looking forward to this part. But I will probably do this right at the end.

Lovely job. Job done!
Thank you and thanks for watching
whats the weight of lead used? this must add quite a load to a building? lovely job, should be proud 👍
I don’t know to be honest. But there’s a fair few tons going on this job. Thank you and thanks for watching.
What are the lead material costs for a job like this? The last small roll of lead I bought was expensive!
I really don’t know as the client is buying the materials.
I think you owe us the video of the bastard cheek 😝
Omg that will be nothing but beeps 😳😂.
Worth it 😆
Hello stu. Irish Paco here. I'm a slater/roofer . I got the pleasure of fitting some pressed metal flashing into a gap on a section of flat between to buildings some years back and got an awful cramp in my hamstring and it took me 15 minutes to get out.. 😂😂. Stay away from Greg's.. beautiful lead work BTW.. 👏
Hi Paco I can’t stay away from Greggs lol. It’s become the Friday treat 😂. Thanks for watching.
Hi how much would I expect to pay for a job exactly like this please
I can’t remember exactly. But to change the lead work alone it’s probably around £500.00. Then there’s the extra cost of scaffolding if that’s needed. And any tiling work. Thanks for watching.
How is the roof tiles not parallel to the building or vice versa
Apparently the building is twisted. Thanks for watching. Full vid going live very soon.
Not parallel to slate laths looks bad, impossible to do anything with that silly Gap between chimney and side of dormer, lead work looks good, design is sad could have done with another window.
Thank you. I’ll get in that gap. The question is will I get back out again 🤦🏻♂️😂. Thanks for watching.
Can you do a roof the same as this over a bay window?
Yes of course. Thanks for watching.
Good luck with the right hand side cheek lol
A job for little colin, little colin was a dwarf that used to do leadwork with us, he could have lost himself in that gap then popped his head out around lunch time looking the oil 😂😂😂
I know 🤦🏻♂️😂. I think I’m gonna get stuck. I’m starting that tomorrow.
and that was before he swept the chimney
@@slbleadworks Film it! and don't edit out the swearing lol
@@SocialistChampagne 😂😂😂
Looks mega !! Bet the bill did too 😂
Thank you. I certainly wouldn’t be able to afford for this work to be done. There’s still so much to do. It’s going to look amazing.
@@slbleadworks already looking pukka mate like all your work does.. I bet there’s some serious weight in that ? Learnt a lot watching you over the years 👌
Just a question not a criticism Is it now common practice to us a rubber mallet over a wooden bossing stick?
I don’t of any lead workers that use wooden tools anymore. I once had an amazing wooden bossing mallet. I really miss it.
I have watched a few “lead bashers” on you tube and some I must admit are pretty poor but you are by far the best by a country mile
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Beauuuutiful...
Thank you and thanks for watching.
that looks amazing mate well done
Thank you and thanks for watching. I’ve now got both sides done and Just the front to do. I’ll hopefully start that today if it stops raining 🤞.
Smashing mate!! It's never ending, isn't it! Forever making other peoples homes look incredible, we have no time for our own. Hope you had a great holiday.
Thank you. Yes mine has had to wait and I’m having to do it on Sundays when I feel I’ve got enough in me. It will get there. But it’s just taking forever and I desperately want to get the scaffold down. Thanks for watching.
Great work mate What situation do you use copper strip on edge as some of your vids you just dress down and cut lead without turn Thanks
Thank you. I like to use a welted copper drip edge as much as I can. As I think it’s a nicer finish. But sometimes it’s not practical. As clients want to see minimal lead on the front edge. If the work is heigh I’ll always try and use the welted edge. As it also prevents wind lift. Thanks for watching.
Wish we flashed our chimneys in lead in states. Very nice job.
Thank you and thanks for watching. Lead is hard to get hold off over there isn’t it ?.
@slbleadworks , Not really can still aquire rolls. In NYC plumbers are still required to do lead shower pans. Awesome channel.
@@j.d.1488 thank you I’m glad your enjoying the content.
Question. Does moisture ever appear under the lead? Not because of leak, but of the temperature difference.
I think I’m right in saying it shouldn’t do. If moisture on the underside of the lead is appearing it could be because the lead has been laid in wet conditions and moisture is trapped underneath. Or from bad or no ventilation. But if I were you I’d google your question to confirm what I’m saying.
@@slbleadworks It's true that I didn't watch the whole video. Thanks.
Doesn’t actually show you how to do anything - just skips to after it has been done!
Sometimes I don’t have time to show as much as I’d like to. But if you watch some more of my content you’ll see that usually I show quite a lot of the process. More than most I’d say. Thanks for watching.
Looks ace apart from 3way mitre above dormer. I always make them line through. Did he not use half round though ridge tree nd 3rd up hips?
Thank you. I’m not sure to be honest what he used. I just need to clad the dormer now and then the scaffold can finally come down 🤦🏻♂️.
👍👍
Thanks for watching.
Great video, thanks. Does the heating/ stretching make the lead a bit thin? Especially at the end?
Thank you. No it doesn’t. The heat just softens the lead. And you have to make sure you move the thickness of the lead so it doesn’t thin when your bossing roll ends etc. Thanks for watching.
Blimey mate that scaff handrail is not up to much for you there
Thanks for watching
Hi I notice you have not cut the brickwork and tucked the lead in, is this because there will be render on top of the lead?
Yes that’s correct. To be honest I usually still cut the lead in if it’s rendered or not. But the client instructed me not too. Thanks for watching.

I recon, that dormer cost more than tilling the roof. What you recon steward?
I really don’t know. But I’m sure the cost is counting up. Thanks for watching.
David Icke, is doing a documentary on lizard people from outer space and has chosen your dormer for further investigation.
Thanks for watching.
💯💯💯
Thanks mate. I hope you’re enjoying Japan ?
@@slbleadworks yes really an amazing place 👍👍👍
@@StanCave Oh cool. How long are you there for ?
Nice job!
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Dam that’s a lot of work
And there’s so much more to come. I can’t wait to get onto the big lead flat roof.
@@slbleadworks get it when you can, winter is on the way
@@Kevin-is-here yes it’s coming very quickly. I’m all ready starting to have rained off days 🤦🏻♂️
Love your work I’m presuming there is an air gap at the back of the plywood ? Also Do you get a cross vent from side cheek to side cheek over the top to vent the roof void ? Being in architecture for 35 years those parapet gutters never have enough falls on them to outlets….keep the great content coming - love it
Thank you. Yes there is. There’s vents everywhere on this job. We’ve got them at the bottom of the mansard. On top of the ply cheeks. The dormers. And the entire flat roof. Including one that will run through the ridge line. Lots more content to come. I can’t wait to start the lead flat roof. Thanks for watching.
Totally awesome work
Thank you and thanks for watching.
What would you is the lifespan of what you have done? Beautiful work.
I don’t know exactly but it should last way longer than alternative materials. Thanks for watching.
You do some crackin work. Lovely stuff
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Magic mate thé most educational video . Now i Know what Ive done wrong.
Thank you I’m glad you’ve found the video helpful. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
Hi Stuart great work, if you don't mind me saying we were taught to mark the lead for bends with a small off cut of lead
Hi, thank you. I’ve never been taught that But I know it’s very important not to cut into the lead when you’re marking it. Is that the reason you was taught to use small off cuts of lead ?
@@slbleadworks yes it was, I must say I like the idea of using the string line as well, when you work on your own you miss out on other people's tricks and I have learnt a few watching your videos, I'm semi retired plumbing and heating engineer who did a City and Guilds where leadworks was one of many subjects we covered, we weren't encourage to use constant annealing while bossing lead for instance which watching your videos makes it a lot easier, keep up the good work
How do you get on with storing C2H2/O2 at home? are there any specific requirements?👍
Not that I know off. Thanks for watching.
@@slbleadworks 👍
So what happens to all those scraped pieces of lead?
It all gets recycled and turned into new lead rolls. Thanks for watching.
What a shame to conceal such a beautiful element. Should’ve just used aluminium or colour bond steel.
Thanks for watching.
Nice technique as usual, how come your always seem to have the site to yourself with no one in the way, i never had that luxury
Thank you. Oh that’s because a lot of the time I’m filming on Saturdays when everyone else has the weekend off.
Oh I see
Shame you could actually see the plinth brick, woukd have been more cost effective to have done away with them personally. And with that last little bit of the plinth that is visible, your lead work, shame as it is you couldn’t see it Stu, Percy think it would look better just brought the lead down just that bit more to cover up that silly little bit of brick showing. Looks a nice place I must say. 👍🏻
Yeah it’s a lovely place. I dread to think how much the build is costing. I think the roof was 60k on its own. And also it’s nice having my feet firmly on the ground for a change. Thanks for watching.
Old school here, do we not use beech dressers and mallets anymore ?
No sadly not. I once had a beech mallet and it was so good for bossing roll ends. I really need to get another one day.
That's like a house gone back in time with all the timber cladding we moved into first family home many many many years ago and that type of cladding was on the exterior walls think the houses came from Sweden which would make sense with all things timber that come from there. the houses were freezing in the winter. On the other side of the coin built a Scanda HUS (House) down in Devon many years ago timber frame 6 inch timber walls triple glazing windows doors and that house was very hot we had to keep the windows open it was so warm. very nice work Sir hope you enjoyed your holidays
was gonna say.. that Stirling board looks like 2 shredded wheat. I bet the they can't eat 3..
Thanks for watching.
Tradesman good job
Thank you and thanks for watching.
No one in the US does it like this. Instead they use 14 pieces and step over one another. It obviously works, but the issue is water, etc get into each of the steps and its 14 points to fail. The way you do it is absolutely superb, problems are eliminated! So well done!!!
Thank you and thanks for watching.
hi stuart best video yet on how to lead weld and equipment needed good tutorial .😄👌
