Hi Richard thanks for watching my vids. I’m glad you’re finding them useful. I have actually got a vertical welding vld on my channel. Have you seen this ?
25 years a roofer myself and consider myself sn expert 🫣, but i have never welded.... I feel its high time i started, youve inspired me to give it a go! Great channel 👍🏼👍🏼
Shame that I can't have a go. I would love to try. Should have learnt when I was in the UK. Like any form of welding. Even if you know the basics. You need to practice to get that muscle memory. Have you done tig welding. One would think you could be pretty good at it. Plus you must be able to do braising style welding too with that set up on steel sheet etc.
Hi, firstly thanks for the tutorials, really helpful. I'm just about to start some re-roofing on my house including a lead dormer (I've already watched your video on this several times!) I've also got quite a few bespoke details, so I'm looking to purchase a lead welding kit. Would you recommend just getting a CASTOLIN PORTABLE GAS LEAD WELDING-BRAZING-PLUMBING-ROOFING-MINI PORTAPACK KIT or getting a similar set up to your kit from somewhere like Weldequip? Thanks again for your help! :)
Thanks for watching my vids. I really appreciate it. I’d recommend getting a similar setup to mine. If you’ve got the right tools it really helps. Good luck with everything and please let me know how you get on.
Thank you. You can get oxy propane kits but In my experience they are harder to use. If you do go down this route make sure the kit comes with a model o torch or you’ll struggle even more. If your really serious about lead welding it would be better to get a oxy actylene kit. It will be easier to use and cheaper in the long run. And when your in a tight spot trying to weld a vertical you’ll thank me lol.
Hi mate nice video! Just bought a welding kit and I just need some oxygen and acetylene bottles I was wondering whether to get the regular ones or integra and if there’s really much difference?
Hi there thanks for the video, I'm just starting to learn on an Oxyturbo set and I think I'm running it too hot. Do I just need to add more oxygen and lower the gas to stop it being too hot? Cheers
Thank you and thanks for watching. The gun is called a model o torch. Make sure you get the same one as mine and not a replica as you’ll notice the difference. You can get all the bits you need from the welders warehouse.
Hi, what are the ins and outs of acetylene vs propane along with the different types or torch/nozzle? For example, can I use a BOC Saffire DH with a swagged nozzle and oxy propane for lead work?
Hi, to be honest I’ve never used propane. I always use acetylene. Just the way I was taught. My advice with the torch is to make sure it’s a genuine model o torch. And not a replica. You can really tell the difference. The flame seems to creep on the replicas. And I use a number 3 nozzle.
I personally definitely wouldn’t recommend it. Especially as a beginner. They are quite hard to use. If you want to go down that route make sure the kit is fitted with an original model o torch. Go for the progas 500 model o kit if you don’t want to open an account. They sell them on the welders warehouse. Around £250.00 I think.
Thank you and thanks for watching. I always lap weld as it was the way I was taught. Also I find it so much easier but probably just because it’s what I do all the time. No I haven’t tried that before. I think I’d need to change my regulators.
Hello, can I ask you what is the thickness of the lead that you weld ? And if it's the same that you use is addition to weld. Thank you very much, good videos
Nice. I've got the little jet nozzles. With the little holes around the edge. Its a model o torch. But I cannot stop burning holes through the lead. I spoke to the guy that sells the jet nozzles and he said you cannot get a little ball flame with them, they will always be a small little cone shape. Have you used them, are they hard work? Maybe I'm just a bit sh*t 🤣
I don’t think I’ve ever used them to be honest. The nozzle I use just has one hole. You can get them from the welders warehouse. Maybe get one and see if it makes any difference.

Hi Stuart... I'm thinking of getting the Sievert Pro 86 Jewellers Gas Blow Torch Kit which they say is ok for lead work. As mine is hobby welding I didn't want to go in for "Oxy/Acc bottles. Have you welded with propane? I appreciate your comments please.
Hi I’ve no experience with this kit to be honest. And I’ve never welded with propane either. But if it was me. I’d be inclined to go with the ProGas 5000 lead welding kit if I didn’t want to go down the oxy/acetylene route.
You can use a Stanley knife , curved snips, or a welding torch if it hasn’t got to be neat. If you need to mark the circle to be cut out too you can use a pair of dividers to do this.
I would start right at the source and then work back. Take the acetylene bottle off and open it up first to make sure gas comes out. Then add the regs and try again. It’s happened to me before. It was the flashback that failed and wouldn’t let gas through. I swapped it over and it was sorted.
Is welding lead dangerous, or it's not the same as lead paint. I work in a chemical plant and before we cut pipe we have to get the paint checks before we cut because of the risk of lead paint.
Yes it’s very toxic. And the way it enters the body the most is lead fumes from welding. We have to have blood tests once a year to check our lead levels. Thanks for watching.
