I think the ‘lost eye’ gave the piece a more mysterious feel that goes well with being under water. Very lovely piece.

I remember learning that in doing portraits it's super common for artists to put more detail in one eye than the other because fully rendering both tends to cause competition in the piece. So your decision to do that turned out to be a common technique and I think it looks really good! 👌💕

Any normal artist would have left the eye in, but you knew it would take away from the other eye, the center of focus, no one does this, you are a genius. I'm sure it will inspire copy cats.

That takes courage and I really appreciate your decision to hide the eye. There were some paintings by Charles Reid that he just paint the shadow and leave the eyes out completely. And it looks so atmospheric and amazing! Makes it more mysterious and distance, more powerful and emotional. You are such a good artist, thank you for sharing your art and creativity ☺️

You are a true inspiration. As I get back to my art for the first time in a long time and the first time being more serious about it... the way you draw these children clowns and paint them really blows my mind. Your amazing and original and it’s amazing to see it all unfold

I love how soft you make your paintings look. This one specifically, I love the effect you got by making some bold vertical strokes and how those contrast with your soft blending. I also like the contrast between the abstract left eye and the rendered right eye.
On a side note I kept thinking that this looks like clown ice cream sundae that’s melting.

Love the piece. there is so many contradictories in it, a crown which usually related to evils(or ppl hide their feelings depends on different culture) and at same time a kid. The rainbow which is usually means happy but with the sad kid crying. The color also in a very beautiful blue tone which set the scene a bit moody. Also she(maybe he) is under the water or maybe just a closed space where set the scene a bit depressing. Maybe she closed the door to outside or maybe no one can see her.

One of the things that helped me with oil painting was doing a medium-dark value early on for dark areas as a first pass, then waiting till near the end to add anything else to it. I was kind of surprised but the detail in the brighter areas helped push back the shaded areas and I realized I didn't need much detail for dark areas. (Hope this makes sense!) maybe this can help when you have pieces like this that lean darker.
I do like your end solution to more or less cover the one eye. I think still having that little corner of the eye showing let's us know something is there and the little bits of shading around the eye makes it feel purposeful (not like you covered it just because).

    • @AstrellaVT
      @AstrellaVT 4 года назад

Personally, taking the eye out definitely looks better for me for the same reasons you said. The blurry eye somehow drew your eye, maybe because it contrasted with the rest of the well-defined face? If anything, I think you could bring a bit more chunky shapes into the rest of the face just to bring it all together and bring that eye back into the face design a bit more. I’d definitely be super nervous covering anything though, maybe it might be good to snap a picture and test some things digitally first 😂

Wow, I really love how you transformed the balloons from the tears like that. Its so strikingly clever!-
But I also must say, that in terms of the balance of the piece, something seems amiss. I think that there maybe too much going on on the right side? It does feel a little cramped.
    This is my opinion:)

Chris, I would really love to see you do something like this but on cold press watercolor paper. I think it would really make the granulating colors perform to their best ability giving your painting more depth and texture. Not that it’s not wonderful as it is, it’s great! I personally prefer cold press myself and I‘d like to see how your art style would look on it.

Wow! I can not stop thinking about the psychology that may have consciously or maybe even subconsciously been put into this painting... there are soooo many symbols to interpret in just this painting... OOWH! :) I find it cathartic, especially when I'm feeling a bit lost, to paint my feelings.... The clown that should be happy with everyone's expectations is crying and drowning in their own tears. The knocked out eye could show the broken image you see of yourself, while on the surface everyone sees the rainbows and balloons - childhood dreams... When I see this painting I see a lot of fear and inability to express your wants and needs by feeling lost in emotion and how you "should" be feeling....... I could also be pulling all of this out of my butt :P But still really cool! Keep doing more paintings like this! I like it! I hope you do too!

Seems to me that your new direction is going towards making art that makes more deeply personal statements and seeks more intimacy with your audience. I think that is a very strong starting point. I agree that you should not share your feelings about the work as it develops. What would be amazing though, is after however many months of exploration you were to do a video reviewing the works, talking about what you were trying to achieve and how various decisions led you in particular directions. It's also ok to keep it totally to yourself. It must be so stressful to be constantly putting your process in videos. Very brave. I am in awe.

I know I'm super late but you saying "Was it even necessary to paint it that many times" and being so frustrated with how you didn't notice it sooner just struck a cord.
Yes. Yes it was necessary. Is it hard and drives you mad? Hell yeah it does but now you know.
A person once explained it to me this way: A baby needs to fall when trying to walk. It needs their legs to be too close together and too far apart on other tries. You could tell it to just assume a hip-width stance but it will have learned nothing about how to keep it's balance if their legs ever assume a position that is slightly off.
Sometimes you just have to grind your teeth through something to break through an important barrier :')

I've heard you say this several times, so here's a correction I you care.
You CAN say "how it will look" or "what it will look like"
You can NOT say "how it will look like"
It's not a big deal, I just notice it.

@@jana_lee Where is the moment when we needed the most?
You kick up the leaves, and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue sky's faded to gray
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carrying on
Stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And I don't need no carrying on
'Cause you had a bad day
      You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
      You say you don't know
      You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile, and you go for a ride
      You had a bad day
      The camera don't lie
You're coming back down, and you really don't mind
      You had a bad day
      You had a bad day
Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carrying on
      You had a bad day
      You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
      You say you don't know
      You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile, and you go for a ride
      You had a bad day
      The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
      You had a bad day
Sometimes the system goes on the blink, and the whole thing it turns out
      Wrong
You might not make it back and you know that you could be well, oh, that
      Strong
      And I'm not wrong
So where is the passion when you need it the most?
      Oh, you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
'Cause you had a bad day
      You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
      You say you don't know
      You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
      You had a bad day
      You see what you like
And how does it feel one more time?
      You had a bad day
You had a bad day (had a bad day, had a bad day, had a bad day)
