Several years ago I bought a 96' Lincoln Town Car that had an Interceptor motor (used in Police cars) and only 123,000 or so miles on it. VERY LOW MILES for the car's age. It was previously owned by an old man and his wife had passed a couple of years earlier. He kept a notebook of meticulous records that backed up the low mileage. Not a blemish inside or out. All the interior and carpet looked new. They literally only drove the car to church and the grocery store. An absolute cream puff! The only issue was that the vinyl roof was starting to dry out and crack. I gave him the $1,500 he was asking. It handled extremely well for such a big car and floated like you were riding a cloud. I regret having to sell it but couldn't turn down the $3,500 I was offered for it. I did have the vinyl roof replaced and put a very nice stereo in it. Ford's Quality Control was on point in the late 90's.
@@samholdsworth420 Not sure what I said was funny to you but hey, whatever. That same motor came in a LOT of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars over the years.
@@FredFukkinBear i think that he was laughing because the interceptor motor isnt actually anything more than a tune that is programmed into the ecm and that really only entails removing the speed limiter and maybe slightly more fuel. the engine in and of itself though is exactly the same. outside of the engine you had better radiators and more cooling for the transmission better suspension, different gearing, and various other things like that. the engine though isnt any different internally. the days of the police engines being souped up are over as it is all about the computers and the tunes that reside in them.
I really am beginning to think that the engine didn't get the rebuild that was paid for. You asked for a comment before the vlog finished and i would try a compression test. But as I'm watching now it sounds very bad just after you cut out the cat. ✌️👍🇬🇧
I'd at least see if a new timing chain, guides and tentioners, and if you find more issues just swap out the 4.6 for anther 4.6 then sell it... Quickly!
The panthers were great cars I've owned 3 of them over the years. They do have weak spots though the frames and front wheelwells rust rapidly the intake manifold cracks and the ignition coils go out and mess up the engine.
The Panther cars are wonderful. I'm a 63 year old just retired fleet mechanic. I've worked on a lot of them. I drive one, and plan to drive one for the rest of my life. There are plenty of them around, and there will be enough parts available to keep them going for decades. I know everything there is to know about them, and if/when I become physically unable to work on them, any independent shop can work on them. No special dealer only tools or software required. Here in the Phoenix, AZ area they do not rust. I prefer the 2003 and up Grand Marquis. Front end is much stronger on the 2003 and up, and the Grand Marquis has a 2.73 rear axle. When combined with the 4 speed AODE transmission I can get 30 mpg on the highway at 65 mph with the cruise control on. I'm 6' 240, and they are big comfortable cars. The 2.73 rear axle will also fit on the Crown Vic P71 police car.
@@geraldscott4302 well i have owned three of them with regular wash and waxes and good matience and they rusted like crazy and I've seen countless ones in parking lots and on the road w/ wheelwell rust. They were beautiful cars in many respects but ford did an awful job with the metal up front. It is a rear sight to see an 80s up to 02 marquis without heavy rust upfront.
@@robertriley1569 "It is a rear sight to see an 80s up to 02 marquis without heavy rust upfront" There are tens of thousands of them in AZ. The one issue related to pretty much all the Panther cars, as well as many other makes and models, is severely peeling paint on cars with white paint. My '06 Grand Marquis has absolutely zero rust anywhere, but it's Performance White paint is peeling off all over. It cannot be repainted without removing ALL of the original paint, which is defective. The cost would exceed the value of the car. I couldn't believe how bad the underside of that Lincoln looked. The underside of my '06 looks brand new. Not even a speck of surface rust.
@@geraldscott4302 whats your problem, I have seen with my own eyes fender and wheelwell rust for 20+ years on these cars in multiple states. your phrasing your replys like im full of shit
@@robertriley1569 I have never seen one rusted in the Phoenix, AZ area. Everything rusts in states like Michigan and anywhere they put salt on the roads. My 16 year old Grand Marquis has absolutely NO rust. Even the places where the white paint has peeled off have no surface rust. What we do have here is UV damage, which burns off paint, rots rubber and plastic interior parts.
First of all I would love to see you confront the garage who apparently rebuilt the engine. But I think that an L.S swap or coyote would be the best way to go,and why not throw a ebay turbo on it 🤔..
I have the 1997 exact same town car like new 167,000 mi drives like new love it will keep her as long as she lives arctic blue. Understand I am good for 400,000 miles. Her name is Nellie Blue.
I can’t believe you went through all of that and gutted the cat for no reason when you could tell just by hearing it crank something was wrong internally. Hearing the chain slap and backfiring through the intake is a dead giveaway too. Hell even just hooking up a vacuum gauge would have told you this. And why don’t you just put the chain back on and see what happens before you go and replace the motor?
Hey, I never claimed to be an expert! But the plan for the follow up video is to scope the cylinders to see if we have bent valves! Just putting the timing chain back on isn’t as easy as you make it out to be.
To hurt a 4.6 2valve you really have to abuse it, which I suspect this was. Just change the fluids and filters at a reasonable mileage. My 96 LTC has 215K on it. Mostly normal wear items are the only repair costs. I had one set of plugs and wires and one coil replaced. I run MotorCraft synthetic blend oil. Still gets 23-25 highway mpg. Averages about 21. BTW, why don't you invest in one of the relatively inexpensive scan tools for around $300 that do quite a bit for what they are? Not the $5000 to $10,000 Snap On or Macs. They can save you a lot of time by narrowing down the areas you need to look at
Or, you put you fair in the wrong guy to fix it right the first time! There’s are tough engines, but, when you rebuild the short block, you don’t cheap out on the timing set! Be sure to catch the part 2 to this video!
We did but unfortunately somebody didn’t hit the record button! 😂 there were a lot of different codes from misfires to catalyst efficiency and cam/crank correlation. I had a sneaking suspicion it was chain related, but figured we’d mess around first!
390 with a fitech or a sniper efi. Car is still solid, so whatever is on tap to make it go. May have saved a little time with a compression test, end result? Its broken.

Grab a junk yard motor with a hundred K on it for $400. Had over 500k miles on my 95 TC before it finally fell apart and wasn't worth putting any more money in to.
@@OldeCarrGuy the motor it’s self is the same, but the electronics, brackets, and I think the intake/throttle body and such are different. I’m not 100% sure when they switched from the two coil packs to the coil over plug set up, but I think it was with the 98 body change. Give the free motor a look, but if it’s got coil over setup it will probably be worth the extra money to save the time of switching everything over, gasket kit, and still running the risk that you have bad parts on the old engine that get swapped over.
That poor Lincoln. I think whoever supposedly rebuilt that engine screwed their customer over big time. A different engine and put functioning cats back on it so it will pass emissions.
Many livery cars used in the metro NYC area went well in excess of 500k. And I've seen 7-8 hundred on some. Change the oil every 3000 miles and trans fluid every 12k miles. The intake manifolds usually need to be replaced a few times in their life ..

YOU seem like you are familiar with engines. I'm not an engine guy, but if your car has a main computer, if you have no mechanical problems with your engine, after you replace plugs and any bad connectors to those plugs, if you still have your engine light come on after you drive the car a while, have a Ford dealer reprogram the main computer. A lot of Ford dealers don't even know your main computer can be reprogrammed. PInes Ford in Pembroke Pines FL is one of the few Ford dealers in South Florida that will reprogram your main computer. I see your car has a distributor, so it probably has a single coil. Newer Ford V8's have a coil for every spark plug. IF your AC compressor is not working, reprogramming the main computer will reactivate the AC compressor, assuming there's nothing wrong with the AC compressor. The main computer will shut down the AC compressor to protect it, until the computer is reprogrammed.
Just want to help, with some additional info, a google search shows your car does have a main computer. I'm pasting the top results for you below. I have a 2004 Marquis which was misfiring, engine light would keep coming on after mechanics replaced a lot of parts that really didn't solve the problem . I got some excellent help from a Ford master technician on youtube, so will pass that on for you.....As far as scanners go, the average scanner can tell you if a particular cylinder is misfiring. They can't tell you if the problem is the plug, the coil, the connector to the plug etc. The most those scanners can do is shut off your engine light. However, if there is still a problem with a coil or a connector, the engine light will eventually come back on. If the car continues to be driven without resolving the problem, eventually the AC compressor will be shut down by the main computer. There is a more expensive scanner, called a "bidirectional scanner". This type of scanner can reprogram the main computer; however, to do so, a Ford subscription would need to be purchased for that scanner. The master tech says that subscription is about 20 dollars, (many be more now?) I do not know what the process is to reprogram, or how difficult it is. According to what I'm pasting for you, they claim that replacement computers come already programmed or reprogrammed. 1997 Lincoln Town Car 4.6L PCM - Car Computer Exchangecarcomputerexchange.com › lincoln › prod_2359 do 1997 Lincoln's have a main computer? from carcomputerexchange.com DESCRIPTION ; This is a Lincoln OEM computer for a 1997 Town Car 4.6L ·. ; LIFETIME WARRANTY w/ Core Exchange. ; Fully rebuilt, programmed, and tested for quality. $199.95 · $19.95 delivery · In stock Engine Computer Programmed/Updated 1997 Lincoln Town Car 4.6 ...www.ebay.com › itm If you do not have PATS, your unit will be Plug and Play. ... @@samholdsworth420 Not sure what I said was funny to you but hey, whatever. That same motor came in a LOT of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars over the years.
@@FredFukkinBear just saying all panther platform cars from 92/93 up had the same engine as the police interceptors.
Hey Ian. Thanks for coming over. You'll find i do a lot of stuff different...lol I'm RUclips certified!
If it is a rebuilt motor put the timing chain back together correctly and it should be fine
You wouldn't be worried about bent valves?
My Aunt has one in her drive way less than 60000 miles on it.
NIce!
Hello matey from the UK in Liverpool
I think you have a stuck valve exs I bet it's your exhaust valve
Hello in the UK! You best go watch the follow up video! lol
Lol haha Great minds think alike on the swap lol
I'd replace the timing chain. The other mechanic probably did something wrong. You've got so little into it, it's worth a shot.
Definitely going to try something.
CD changer is in the trunk
Good Job Jason You're saving another old car that deserves to live
Thanks John. They ALL deserve to live!
REPLACE your PCM see if that works
Keep watching this series!
I remember when I bought my 1990 Lincoln town car back in February 1 2018 out of my uncle junkyard paid $400 and running good 5.0efl
Nice!
I had a newer version for a month as a rental back in the day, it was a total POS. American cars of this era drive like 1960’s European cars at best.
To each his own! Thanks for watching!
I'd at least see if a new timing chain, guides and tentioners, and if you find more issues just swap out the 4.6 for anther 4.6 then sell it... Quickly!
We'll keep pushing forward.
Perfect contender for a genuine hot-rod Lincoln, best of wishes, love that car.
Thanks Pen
Sounds like the classic 4.6 timing chain issue
Definitely! Part 2 is now up!
I have a 90 LTC it has a 302 pushrod Windsor motor. This would work too. PS these cars drive great
I can't wait to drive it. My first panther with air ride!
Hellcat engine + Panther platform = The Hell Panther!🤣
Now you're talking!
I had a 78 Lincoln back in the 80's. I've been wanting another Lincoln. I would sell my Grand Marquis if I find one I like.
Absolutely huge cars! Love them!
First of all I would love to see you confront the garage who apparently rebuilt the engine. But I think that an L.S swap or coyote would be the best way to go,and why not throw a ebay turbo on it 🤔..
lol Keep watching!
I have the 1997 exact same town car like new 167,000 mi drives like new love it will keep her as long as she lives arctic blue. Understand I am good for 400,000 miles. Her name is Nellie Blue.
I can’t wait to drive this gem!
Fun times ahead :) you make great content

Check the coolant temp sensor. Changing that cured my problem.
I definitely think we’re beyond that!
@@OldeCarrGuy Shoot. I hate that for you. I'll keep watching. Good stuff!
Def a good car for the $ have fun with it! Put a 2JZ in it!
Black on Black?! Hell no that ain't junk!!!
I thought it was rare for this combo! love it
Damn I wish I could find a car like that got a 4.6l with real low miles in a wrecked explorer 05
There you go!
Before drilling holes in the cat, I would have cranked it up and checked exhaust flow first. ????
In the video I put my bare hands on the front cat after we ran it. If its cold, there's likely no flow.
BTW, why don't you invest in one of the relatively inexpensive scan tools for around
$300 that do quite a bit for what they are? Not the $5000 to $10,000 Snap On or Macs. They can save you a lot of time by narrowing down the areas you need to look at
Or, you put you fair in the wrong guy to fix it right the first time! There’s are tough engines, but, when you rebuild the short block, you don’t cheap out on the timing set!
Be sure to catch the part 2 to this video!
You’re right. There’s an issue with the timing belt.
Definitely!
The MachV111 had a nice 4.6 Intech V8 that I think should just drop in. The computer part, I don't know.
Hard to turn down a free engine though!
@@OldeCarrGuy You can't. Not in your position!
*I'm surprised that you didn't use a scanner before you did anything else.*
We did but unfortunately somebody didn’t hit the record button! 😂 there were a lot of different codes from misfires to catalyst efficiency and cam/crank correlation. I had a sneaking suspicion it was chain related, but figured we’d mess around first!
Plugged EGR passage? These were famous for that.
They were common, but not this time!
Of course, after watching it I know what the problem is, but no spoilers here!
I've been looking at these electric superchargers. Some of them add some wicked power.
Like you buy! Looking forward to a follow up.
Thanks Mike
Very salvageable car . Still a beauty .
Agreed
390 with a fitech or a sniper efi.

I think you found your diesel swap candidate! Or just LS swap it?
Just gotta find the right one!
You may as well put a LS turbo if you can, all the best to you and your loved ones

Had a,1993. Loved it! Ran and ran. 250k miles than I had to let it go.
It's tough letting go!
Owned two 1992s one total someone rearend me The other drove for years engine couple years ago 2017 Was planning on fixing got hurt on job people stole parts off it me living in Michigan car was in Georgia now 2005
Can you send a borescope down the cylinders to see if the valves hit the pistons?
If I had one I could!
Grab a junk yard motor with a hundred K on it for $400.
Had over 500k miles on my 95 TC before it finally fell apart and wasn't worth putting any more money in to.
My son has a low mileage 4.6 out of an 02 he’ll give me. I just want to make sure it’ll work!
@@johngaltline9933 As far as I can tell, it's the same. 2 coil packs, throttle body, ect. I will do some research to be 100%

Oh wow!
I've still got half gallon of black jack coating if you want it lol
I bet
That poor Lincoln. I think whoever supposedly rebuilt that engine screwed their customer over big time. A different engine and put functioning cats back on it so it will pass emissions.
Definitely don’t have to worry about emissions here!
Many livery cars used in the metro NYC area went well in excess of 500k. And I've seen 7-8 hundred on some. Change the oil every 3000 miles and trans fluid every 12k miles. The intake manifolds usually need to be replaced a few times in their life ..
At this mileage and a “fresh rebuild” one should have spent the extra on timing components!
Maybe a Hemi swap LS is getting too expensive
Both are expensive!
Tires and wheels are worth what you paid
Exactly! And the cats.
Keep it ford coyote better then LS moter pr Hime
Great car for 500 bucks. Diesel swap would be sick
Sure would!
Those are not the right size tires. Need 225R60x16
I’m not fussy!
a Townie with glass packs?!?!?
Sounds wicked on 4 cylinders.
Probably needs an intake manifold...
Still dry yet!

I sure hope so!
Drop a DOHC 4.6 from a Marauder or Mach 1 in that thing.

Good to know!
