First time I've seen your channel.
On ALL Ford 4.6L 2 valve engines, the cylinders are numbered, starting at the front, right side 1-2-3-4, and left side 5-6-7-8. I know these engines well. I have worked on a lot of them. They are, IMO, the best "modern" engine Ford has ever built. I still MUCH prefer the older '60s and '70s OHV engines, and always will. I am also an "old car guy", but in my case I'm an "old American car guy" I mostly deal with carbureted OHV American V8s) Nevertheless, these engines have proven to be reliable if left stock and properly maintained. And to me than means an oil change every 3000 miles. I have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with 278,000 miles on it (just over 200,000 are mine) and it still runs like new. Mine are mostly highway miles. On a 4.6L 2 valve, if the valves and pistons actually have made contact, I would scrap the engine at that point. These engines are literally (well, almost) a dime a dozen. Get a good used engine, or if the car is in really good condition, replace it with a Powertrain Products rebuilt engine.
Unrelated to the problems with that engine, but that power steering pump is a royal PITA. It is almost impossible to change the oil filter without a socket type oil filter wrench. There is just no room to get a strap type wrench in there. Bad design. One good thing about this engine is NO VVT. That is a definite engine killer.
The rear air suspension on my 2006 Grand Marquis did fail, air bags rotted out. I replaced them with coil springs, problem solved. I can't tell any difference in the ride or handling.

I replaced all the air springs on my town cars before they failed but always keep the system turned off so the pump doesn't turn on when it's -50. Coil springs are a good alternative if you're not hauling much but they sure come in handy with a trunk full of winter ballast.
I sure hope you subscribed. I have a lot of panther content. I think I'm going to take the head off just for fun. If no notable damage other than valves, I may fix and slap it back together. What do i have to lose other than time?
@@pantherplatform I'm in AZ, so I don't need "winter ballast". I disconnected the power from the pump, which is under the air filter housing. There is a wire in the harness (can't remember which one) that has to be cut to eliminate the "check air suspension" warning on the dash. It's behind the glovebox. Another issue common to Panther cars is the climate control blend door actuator tends to fail. It's a small plastic box with plastic gears in it, and the gears eventually strip, usually in the full heat position. Replacing it requires major disassembly of the dash. By removing the glove box and passenger airbag, I was able to reach it with a chisel attached to a long rod made up of several 3/8" drive socket extensions, break it up, and remove it in pieces. I jammed the door in full A/C position. We don't really need heat here in Phoenix, AZ. There are makeshift ways of fixing it, if you are in a cold climate and need heat/defrost.
Lincoln Town Car was the best car ever made and the 1997 Signature was the best year and model. You have a real gem there. The car is extremely easy to work on for a good mechanic.

People give up on the air spring system to often on these cars they're not hard to maintain and ride much better than than the spring kits
I’d be inclined to keep it as long as I can.
i have 6 lincolns with "air ride" and replaced them ALL with coils for only $75 a car. The air ride systems are expensive, horrible and fraught with break downs.

Wow. That's a real car there. My 95 town car has been the most reliable winter car I've ever owned. Holds a thousand pounds of used brake rotors in the trunk with ease and goes anywhere with it's Bridgestone blizzaks.

@@OldeCarrGuy I admire the 95 model year's all aluminum intake manifold vs the 96 and newer junk plastic that leaks on every one of them but that's basically the only issue. The 92-95 aluminum intakes have an egr passageway where the 90° bolts into it and they can get carbon deposits and run crappy but a quick clean with some carb cleaner and a toothbrush and it's good to go.

The engine looks pretty clean inside, it should be worth salvaging this one instead for just swapping it for a junkyard engine.

My 97 is almost perfect. Blend door is being replaced when i feel like pulling the dash. I replaced the rear bags in 2015. Cheap and easy to swap. Amazon rocks. I did soak the bag with Aerospace 303 first and id say it was a good move, not a fail yet

I bought a borescope to look in the cylinders on my 99 Grand Marquis. I seen some smoke coming out of the oil dipstick tube. I'll check for oil on the pistons. Also need to do a compression test before I put anymore money in this car.

You might as well fix that engine, yank the head either send it to your favorite machine shop for a valve job and install new valves, brand new used. Or take it apart yourself and see if in you can lap the new valves in or if that doesn't want to work, valve job time. With only 5,000 miles on the rebuild its a no brainer to fix the engine in there?
You can save the other 4.6L for the Hugo! LOL

@@OldeCarrGuy I will say however well you have that engine torn apart if it doesn't already have the upgraded intake manifold I would strongly recommend doing it because the new manifold is all metal where is the old one was plastic with a metal shelf for the alternator and they often broke apart
If you're going to pull the cyliner head and work on it, you could try something a little trick. Get a set of rebuilt PI cylinder heads, and the corresponding intake manifold. You'll get a slight boast in compression ratio (about 1 point), and alot more flow with good drivability and decent fuel economy. It will cost a little more, but if the short block is OK, it might be an interesting option.
I like that idea. We'll see what the budget looks like after we pull the head.

on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!

At the bottom of the hose there is a valve. Looks like a bike tire valve (shrader valve) Take that out and use it for the leak down kit, put back in when you need to do a compression check.

I bought a 97 town car, executive series. 190hp single pipe 4.6 2v . It was a fleet vehicle. Slow as dog dirt. Mine was reliable though and ran good. 😛

Is there a benchmark with these cars (4.6) where preventive maintenance is worth it? This type of job, just do it regardless around 200 k miles?
How about plugs and wires, how often to replace?
From what I gather, the timing chains are good to approximately 400-500k kilometres (250-300k miles). So yes, preventative maintenance would say to act early, rather than react too late!
Ok. I own a 1996 Grand Marquis that I've had Bout a year now.. Previous owner had it about 9 years and only put about 4 k miles on it and it sat in a dry garage the rest of the time. I'm just kicking around the idea of getting the alternator replaced and plugs and wires as a preventative measure
Engine runs and shifts smooth right now but I'm thinking future and preservation

I believe the cylinder numbers for that Ford should be 1-2-3-4 front to back on the passenger side, and 5-6-7-8 front to back on the drivers side.
I knew that, it just didn't want to come to me. I'm so used to GM & Chryslers evens and odds.

my 95 towncar has been down for several years due to a engine knock. i have a engine and trans from a 97 but dont really have anywhere to try and put it in so it will sit there until i can get a shop to be on concrete to be under the car cutting everything loose. here is a video of it running and knocking. ruclips.net/video/qctSXJisoEA/видео.html

@@OldeCarrGuy yea its bad and i cant wait until i can get the other engine in it so i can tear the old one down to see what went wrong with it. it did run low of oil a few times due to the oil filter adapter gasket basically pouring oil out of it when i was still daily driving it. i have a 96 towncar jack nicklaus edition that is as fully loaded with every option as a cartier edition.
Rip out the air ride and put normal coil springs in it

Are town car was bought new in 92 and has 341,000 on it now and looks like the day it was bought. Same drive train and always maintained.

I’d say it’s worth it to pull the head and replace the valves rather than replace the whole motor with a used one. You’ve got a nice rebuilt motor there and It’d be a shame to scrap it.
I think that's the next step for sure. Not much to lose at this point!
If you are absolutely sure it is just the valves I would agree. But there could also be damage to the pistons and possibly even the rods, which you can't see without a complete engine teardown. 4.6L 2 valves are so common you can get a rebuilt long block for around $2500, or a brand new one for not much more. If all you have to lose is time and work, and are making RUclips videos of it, that's a different story. My plan is to put a new or rebuilt long block in my 278,000 mile Grand Marquis when it wears out. But I need it to be cross country reliable.
