For the first time (and almost certainly the last), Matt is ranking outside in the summer heat for this special hot dog episode of Bless Your Rank. All the top contenders have been grilled to perfection and then grilled again by the Alabama sun. Which frank will affirm their superiority? Will it be Oscar Mayer, Ball Park, Nathan's, Eckrich, Bar S, Gwaltney, or some other random brand Matt found at Piggly Wiggly? Also what the heck is going on in Smithfield, Viginia?! - Приколы

So, originally Smithfield's was just the largest pork producer in the world and basically sold it's raw products including beef trimmings to brands like Nathan's. It got acquired by some major global conglomerate, and after that it acquired all of the brands mentioned in the video (and a bunch of others). So instead of just selling the meat to those brands, it actually makes the end products and packages them now. While they all say Smithfield, VA, most of their pork is processed in NC. The reason why Smithfield became so big is based on the fact that most pigs are raised and slaughtered in Virginia and North Carolina, so it made sense for the processing and packing companies to be in those states. Hotdogs specifically are byproducts of other pork processing. Smithfield is better known for their hams than hotdogs.
Smithfield was bought out by a multinational corporation based in China. Happened right before COVID. Some of their products are slaughtered here, sent to there for processing and then imported back here.
@@scottharris149 The vast majority is slaughtered and processed in NC and VA. But, yes some does go through China, which is concerning. "Meat from China" is just not something anyone wants to willingly consume.
I prefer beef hot dogs so.....
@@scottharris149 '''''''''''''''i wonder what happens to the 'products' back in China? Some chickens are sent to China...processed and then supposedly sent back here; I will NOT buy or knowingly eat anything from China. I think they are keeping our meats and substituting theirs.
@@Kelnx Wild that it somehow makes economic sense to ship meat to China for processing then ship it back here.
So my mom used to live in Smithfield, VA. I asked her if the town was stinky and she told me that it depended on a couple factors. One was if the tide was rolling out and another was if you could smell the meat plants. She told me that it could get pretty stinky if you were driving behind a hog truck, even with the windows closed.
If anybody was wondering if it was indeed stinky.
Thanks for the awesome video, Matt!

I am disappointed that he didn't do Hebrew National. I prefer Nathan's, hubby likes Hebrew National, but both are really flavorful. One of the best things to do to a Hebrew National is de-kosher it by frying in bacon grease. That is chef's kiss (I like Nathan's that way as well.)
That's what I said
Nah. The Nathan's release a ton of their own grease. Most dogs don't. Guess they're fattier than most of the others.
Amen, them all beef kosher dogs from Hebrew National are the best damn dog you can put between a bun!
@@saulloya9877 That's the only hot dog people should eat. The disgusting crap they put in a hot dog is nauseating. Kosher is actually the only dog that isn't disgusting.

Matt , I'm from Virginia and can tell you that Smithfield is famous for their smoked hams . All the scraps are the hot dogs . The stinkie place is the paper mill . You can taste the stink .
@eaglerider1826 -- Not the paper mill in Franklin? Didn't it quit manufacturing or processing paper pulp? Yes, it was definitely stinky. My father took me up in his Cessna a few times back in the late 70s. Definitely knew when we were flying over Franklin. Lived in Chesapeake decades later and popped over to Smithfield a few times. Beautiful houses just down the street from the meat processing area.
@@CarlaQuattlebaum Yes , for me that was many , many years ago .
I want to see Matt rank fast food salads😂 Now THAT would be hilarious 😂
I recently moved from Alabama to Arizona, and let me tell y'all about the "Sonoran hot dog" they make here. It's a bacon-wrapped hot dot in a Mexican-style roll, and topped with beans, onion, tomato, mayo, mustard, and jalapeno salsa. It is VERY good, and that is my field report of what they do out here in Arizona.
😮
I love Sonoran hot dogs. One of my neighbors in my apartment complex is from Arizona and she has Sonoran hot dogs two or three times a week. Living in Kentucky. I usually have people give dirty looks when I put mayonnaise on a hot dog.
I lived in Tucson for years and got my favorite Sonoran hot dog from a hot dog trailer that would park down the street from my house. They were served with a bacon-wrapped jalapeño on the side. So good!
Maybe it is the lizard-i meat that makes it tasty. 😆😆. Thanks for the feedback.
Welcome to AZ! We suck in a lot of ways, but we are an open carry state, and pot is legal. So, we do have some good things😂😂😂😂
No Hebrew National?!? I guess all beef dogs weren’t part of this contest. Also shocked to hear that there are hot dogs worse than Gwaltney.
Hebrew National are phenomenal hot dogs! I am disappointed that they werent on there too! Nathans are good as well, but just FYI, Nathans were the all beef ones.
Hebrew National were always my top choice until they became 40% more expensive than Nathan’s. I always had Nathan’s ranked as my 1 B, so that’s the only dog I eat now.
Hebrew National must Auvergne changed their recipe in recent years bc they suddenly tasted much saltier and it just wasn't working with my usual chili/mustard/onion topping selection.
However, it did inspire me to use Cole slaw to sweeten it up a little and that has since become the only way I'll eat a hot dog now
Yeah I was waiting for Hebrew nationals.
Hebrew National is worth the extra cost. I used to buy them at Costco and think the Kirkland Signature brand is the same.
As a native Arizonan, we eat a little bit of everything depending on where you are in the state. Being from the deep south eastern part of AZ, literally right next to the border with Mexico. My family mainly eats Mexican food. Which is a generalization of the food down here. Still really really good food. And we also eat a lot of BBQ
I am from Arizona and I will tell you we spend our time drinking Arizona tea, eating Sonoran hot dogs, and celebrating the fact that we don't have humidity in addition to the heat!

I think Nathan's was the only 100% beef hot dog on this list, and probably why it was better.

Have y’all ever thought about ranking Texas toast from different restaurants?
We lived in Maine for a few years. The hot dogs there are called “red snappers” because they’re red (pinkish before you cook ‘em) and the skin snaps. And the buns were sliced through the top like a lobster roll. It was weird.
Of course some Mainers called baked beans grits, so what do you expect?
Top split buns are my favorite. I can only find them at Trader Joe’s.
My daughter lives in Boston and her BF drove me up to Maine to "get a real hot dog". I do love the New England style buns.
🤔😢
Miss red snappers. There's no other hot dog that matches them
As someone who lives in Phoenix, I can confirm we eat cactus and grilled lizard. It's a must while looking at our turquoise rocks from the Grand Canyon.

I kid. It's one of my favorite places in the country. One of the few "grey" areas where can get some good stargazing in.
I would rather eat either of those than the Bar S hotdog.
Toasted pretzel buns or toasted Hawaiian buns improving a grilled meat (be it hot dogs, hamburgers, or sandwich) is a hill I'm willing to die on. Cheap buns don't hold up when wet, and then you're just holding a soggy mess of toppings, condiments, and sadness.

Pepperidge Farms makes a hot dog bun that's split along the top instead of the side. A bit harder to open, but worth it since it doesn't tip over.
Brioche buns or Artisan all the way.
I didn't expect to enjoy this video as much as I did. I loved the Gwaltney chicken hot dogs back in the day, but as an adult Nathan's and Hebrew National are my favorites.
I have not had a good hotdog since moving away from PA. Also I grew up with potato buns, they were usually some of the cheapest and tastiest as they were locally made. Hebrew National and Nathan’s are the best I’ve had outside of local Berks & Kunzler I grew up with.
Honestly the best were from the butcher as they’d use the best and freshest scraps for hot dogs and burgers like a rib eye burger was amazing and surprisingly not that expensive as it was scraps so it would’ve gotten tossed otherwise.
I've been waiting for someone to do the dirty work for me on this subject. Thanks man.

Matt you should receive a medal for bravery eating any hot dog with no condiments whatsoever. The ones with the strange marks on them used to come with a secret decoder ring but kids stopped sending for the ring because the only message there was said eat more hot dogs. And the low end dogs don't burn them too much or neighbors might think they're burnt offerings and even the dogs won't eat them. Stay cool and stay hydrated everyone.
The stuff that was rejected by Nathan's went to Eckrich, and the stuff they rejected went to Gwaltney, and the stuff they rejected went to Sunnyland.
I was shocked you didn't include Hebrew National.
1) Chicago Dogs are admittedly an acquired taste, but I really enjoy the sport peppers and the nuclear waste relish.
2) I'd love to see a Vienna Beef/Nathan's/Hebrew National/Sabrett cage match, with all the Wal-Mart dogs pushed to the side.
Funny. I loved Chicago style right off the bat.
Yes on the other brands, especially Vienna. The ones he tested are all disgusting. And... they need to be all beef dogs for real taste.
You know either Vienna or Sabrett is from the street and one of them is going to pull a knife.
If I had to choose Nathan's / Hebrew National / Sabrett, I pick whichever of the three is on sale. I would take any of them any day of the week.

15:16. Yes. Brighleaf Hotdogs from Carolina Packers are made in Smithfield, North Carolina. 😂
You should post a close up of the packaging for those sunnyland hotdogs. I bet the ingredients proudly proclaim "Made from real Animals"
I've never had Sunnyland hotdogs, but it scares me that there is a hotdog worse than Bar-S.
They may need more quotations for "animals".
they have that 7/11 "this will give you food poisoning its cheap" packaging
I think it's funny that the Sunnyland brand is also made by Smithfield (like Gwaltney, Nathans and Eckrich) but if you look at their brands page, it's conveniently absent. Even Smithfield doesn't want to claim them.

I use to move a lot and I unfortunately had the horrible luck of ending up living close to many different types of processing plants: a paper mill, a chicken plant, a plant that made hotdogs, and a dogfood plant are just some of the worst. The paper mill was by far the worst and the dogfood plant was a close second. After being close to the paper mill and the dogfood plant the other two were tolerable. Still stinky though.
There was a bubblegum factory down the road from where I went to college. It was located in a dip in the road (too small to be a proper valley) that kept the sweet stink contained, but when you were driving through it - hoo boy. I can’t imagine living in one of the houses in that same trough.
I asked a friend of mine who has a PhD in meat science (yes, it's a real thing) why Ballpark franks plumped when you cook them. Her speciality at the time was lunchmeat, so she didn't know the answer, but asked around, and her eventual answer was "You don't want to know." Fortunately, I was never a fan of those.
Hmm, must’ve been a marketing ploy to turn an oops into a positive!?! I love hot dogs, but really struggle to eat them sometimes, just because of what’s in them.
I imagine it has a lot to do with heat turning the water into steam.
BallPark has had that Slogan Forever and, when, I was a kid at the time when, they came out in the 70s we switched to them, at the time they were the better hotdogs but, the all beef Hebrew National Hotdogs are the best, after eating them, you can’t go back to mediocre hotdogs that are filled with all those fillers and, who all knows what is in them. I agree those hotdogs taste just down right gross!
LOL. I knew that would be her response. 😄
Well... that's ruined those for me forever 😂😂 thanks for that lol!! I like the Hebrew brand best anyway, but DANG the price is bull crap!
I grew up on Eckrich EVERYTHING (in Ft Wayne). When Smithfield bought it and moved it out of town, I just stopped eating everything but the hotdogs.
I want a sausage snap when I bite into a dog. Since it's virtually impossible to get good snap with good flavor in a dog - I moved on. Polish sausage & cheddar brats ROCK! LOL!
Direct Southern sun during summer... you are a brave man, you LEGEND!
Best hotdog I have had recently is the Costco ones, NOT the big ones you get at the food court, but their smaller hotdog in the multi pack. Has the flavor, snap, juicy, all the things. Thanks Matt for checking these out. Stay cool!!
100% agree with you! I rotate between the Hebrew National hotdogs and the Costco hotdogs. Whichever one is on sale
Agreed. I used to like Oscar Meyer but they changed the recipe a while back and now they are just overpriced Bar S hotdogs
The ones in the food court don't suck.
Kirkland hot dogs are amazing. They are the same ones they serve at the food court. They just serve the larger version.
We only buy Kirkland all beef hotdogs. Not the jumbo ones though.
We have Smithfield meat processing plant in our town (Grayson,Ky) where they do package hot dogs. I can confirm the stink factor (at times) is off the charts. The smell would knock a dog off a gut wagon.
Checking in from Ironton Ohio, and will concur. When the wind is coming from the SW, it kinda smells like cheap ham!!
I didn't know that there was a plant in Grayson. I live a few hours from Grayson in Lexington.

Having delivered to this plant in Grayson KY, I can attest to the fact that in the dead of night while hurtling down Highway 9 that the smell does indeed mix in with the “smoke” that gives this area its nickname of the Smoky Mountains, now mind you when your on the actual property and they tell ya that you want the 2nd delivery bay and that if you get to the rendering pond you’ve gone too far they DEFINITELY mean that ok?!!!!.

40 years ago I worked at the Red Food Store in Rossville, GA, and this guy came in every two weeks and bought a case of Gwaltney Great Dogs. One time I made a comment about how those must be some really tasty hotdogs, and he said, “There’s no way I’d put them things in my mouth, I buy ‘em for my dawgs…a pack of those is cheaper than a can of Tony!” So I’ve never been brave enough to try one…but I hear they’re pretty grainy because of the amount of cereal in them.
They are bad. I used them to put my dogs meds in. They were cheaper than pill pockets. So this guy was right.
Delivered to and from the giant Smithfield processor in VA and the plant has a few smelly areas, but not nearly as bad as the average chicken plant.

Fun Fact: one of the heirs to the Gwaltney meat empire is currently incarcerated. Came across him while working at a prison. We also have a family friend who's part of that family but not close enough to the direct family line of the original company owners to claim anything.

Eckrich was originally a local brand in indiana. Like most, they sold out to a larger company and their quality suffered.
Smithfield is near Norfolk. People in the Norfolk area go to Smithfield in awe of the angelic meat beauty of Smithfield. Always smells like a lovely BBQ of your dreams.
My preference is usually Hebrew National. Great snap and flavor.
So glad the family got to watch this finally! We are in VA, just not near Smithfield, but the James River can be smelly sometimes. My order of preference from age baby to knee high to a grasshopper was Hebrew's National, Nathan's, Oscar Meyer and when we wanted to get spendy Ball Park.

The best hot dogs have a natural casing. Also, there was a butcher shop in Scranton PA that had the best dogs anywhere, they made them and bologna too, when I was a kid. Schumacher's, probably spelled wrong but sounds like shoe-mockers, and they always gave kids a chunk of bologna when parents were shopping. Probably anyone in Scranton 50 or older remembers.
Good stuff, Matt! I agree with you about Nathan’s hotdogs, but you should try Hebrew National Coney Island style hotdogs. The best “pop” and flavor, plus, they exceed bun length (thus Coney Island). Also, I’m not from Virginia, but I’ve visited Smithfield on business a couple of times, and I can say “No stink”. On the contrary, when you’re coming into town, all you can smell is the aroma of cured ham.
Smithfield and Gwaltnew used to be separate companies and were located across the street from each other. at lunch time the workers would line both sides of the streets and yell at each other. as stated below they are now owned by a single company. Smithfield is famous for hams
I need footage of this.
Now owned by WH group (China owned)
One of the things to consider is beef hotdog vs meat blend, usually pork, turkey & chicken. Many people prefer all beef hotdogs because of the stronger flavor but I honestly don't really like them. They taste and sit way too heavy for me and I end up with serious indigestion. I prefer the mystery meat hotdogs like the Oscar Mayer ones. They don't sit like a rock in my stomach and they're also much cheaper.
My granddaughter, who loved hot dogs, spit Bar S dogs out and asked me never to buy them again and to get her regular ones, Ballpark. I tried it and had the same reaction. 🌭💝
You need to try Hebrew National Hot Dogs! They are the BEST! 🌭
They take the fun out of hot dogs. The mystery meats are the best part.
Definitely. Maybe all kosher beef hot dogs are as good; Hebrew Natl is the only brand I've ever tried.
They were my favorite until I tried Nathan’s. (I’m not kosher anymore.)
Truthfully both are great. Nathan's taste best when grilled and Hebrew National is best when boiled. Sabra is good too.

I lived near Smithville when I was in the Navy. I thought the town smelled like baking ham. Delicious. Another standard of quality I look for in a hot dog: can you eat it cold or is it too greasy? Most cold hot dogs are too greasy.
I had a horrible day at work. Watching Matt rate and play with wieners was hilarious. Definitely needed that in my life. 😂😂 Matt, you made Gatorade squirt out of my nose, you were so funny. 😂😂
Holy Frankfurter, this is definitely my #1 favorite bless your ranks ever! Speaking of.......video idea: You need to rank all of your bless your rank videos!!! #2 for me is the little Debbie video, your sugar high is wild 😂😂😂
Matt, Bar-S has their corporate headquarters in Phoenix. The franks are made in Oklahoma. They are basically water, chicken and fat.
My favorite brands are Oscar Meyer and Ekrich. BarS we usually buy for when we grill them on a charcoal grill.
The great potato bun renaissance of 2010. I remember it well 🌭
We all do. Then they ruined it with pretzel buns.
I wish I could get Martin's here.
@@liloreoinya I love pretzel buns.
Of course, being from Chicago, I understand your reticence towards the perfection that is the Chicago dog. And I agree, Nathan's is a darn fine dog. But if you can find them, Hebrew National are the BEST. And if you're in New York, you must try Zweigel's. Shout out to a sister city of food.
Surprised not to see Conecuh hot dogs. The smile on your dog while he was eating was great
Native Zonie here and we love our Mexican food especially Sonoran style. Though we wash it down with pure saguaro cactus juice while polishing our extensive turquoise jewelry collection, yes that parts true.
I live near Smithfield, VA, and it consists of a quaint downtown and historic district and upscale golf communities. I don't recall smelling the hog farm and slaughterhouse but vaguely remember the smell outside of town off of the highway. Smithfield mostly is known for ham and bacon, and I had no idea that the hot dog brands, other than Gwaltney, were made there. In fact, Gwaltney is what is served at most ballparks, little league and professional, around here. Honestly, I prefer Hebrew National and you'll probably have to take away my Southern card for it. Maybe you'll give it back because I enjoyed a scrumptious slaw dog, with homeade chili and homemade coleslaw, on 4th of July. Still thinking about it. It was that good!
I lived near Smithfield for a while and was still surprised at how many of the hot dog brands Matt tried came from Smithfield.
I usually get Bar S only because they’re cheap, they’re fully cooked & I’m hungry. Gone in a few minutes. With mustard of course. Only one you’re missing this round is Hebrew National. Local brand for me. Love this video. May the wiener jokes run amuck 😂😂😂😂
I buy Bar S dogs too. I guess I never really noticed a difference in the taste. I've had other dogs too, but I'm not really fussy.
Doubt the Pig stocks Hebrew National. Although, Walmart stocks them.
@@sheram5949 Its all about the toppings😉
I love your videos, they always add a little fun and smiles to my day!
The BEST dog is from Smiths made in Erie, pa.
They use whole muscle pork (Not throwaway bits and pieces)
They use real wood fired smoke to smoke their products
They have a natural casing variety that SLAPS and has the best SNAP ever.
They also do the best Bologna and Hams ever.
Get you some! And if you need them shipped, let me know. I'm happy to spread the love of Smiths dogs.
The fact that we're talking about the "snap" for an uncased hot dog is really sad. We need to get this man to the midwest to enjoy a natural cased hot dog stat! One of the most disappointing things moving from the midwest to Tennessee is naturally cased hot dogs are just not a thing here.
Usingers or Klements. ❤
I'd ask my relatives in Smithfield about the smell, but over the years they've all mysteriously disappeared. 🤔
Soylent green is people!. Strike that. Any meat coming out of Smithfield.😂
I used to think the same thing about a Chicago dog until I lived in Chicago for three years. Now it's right behind a Carolina dog as my absolute favorite. I put celery salt on every hot dog now just because of it. Amazing hot dog. Best hot dogs you can buy in the store:
1: Snake River Wagyu Dogs(Harris Teeter sells these sometimes if you have one)
2: Nathan Angus Beef Franks(It has to be Angus Beef. Huge difference in flavor)
3: Hebrew National
Honorable Mention: Brightleaf
I am an adult who grew up putting the trifecta: Duke’s mayo, French’s yellow mustard AND Hunt’s tomato ketchup on my hotdogs!🌭 From junior high school until now, I’ve been ridiculed for putting mayo on my hotdogs. I thought that was normal for everyone. Nope. Apparently, neither is sweet pickle relish! Gee Thanks, Mom. 😏 They don’t even taste right to me without these basics as the foundation.
Oh well, WHATEVER!!! I can’t eat them anymore, but it sure does bring back fond memories of outside suppers on summer evenings in the shade on a quilt with a breeze blowing…with sweet iced tea to wash it all down. Yum 😋 🤤
Thanks for the memories, Matt! 😊
